Some more info:
During the early morning sculling, we start with some strokes on the erg and/or
in the boat to warm up. Then we do a lot of drills to improve our strokes,
technique, and "team spirit" depending on everybody's needs.
In case we try to get in shape for races, we also do sprints and drills for
improving connection and strength.
We are off the water by 7.45AM or 8.00AM, depending when people need to be at
work.
Unfortunately there is no shower (except for some cold water outside the
boathouse) and no blow dryers either.
BUT - it is still a lot of fun!!! I never feel better than on Thursdays after
rowing.
Yvonne

off the water? Where are the locker rooms with hot showers and blow dryers? I'd
like to try it - Amber

Subject: [garmasters] Early morning sculling
Dear GAR masters and new rowers,
a small group of brave rowers is out on the water (nearly) every Thursday
morning, at 6.00 AM (meeting at the boathouse 5.50AM). Brian Motyer is our
wonderful and enthusiastic coach.
After the masters meeting last Sunday, Brian and I discussed on posting this
sculling event now more regularly in the web-calender and on opening it to
novice rowers!
Please feel all invited - novice and experienced rowers - to join us for an
awesome early morning work-out while viewing the most amazing sunrises over
Newman's Lake!
To guarantee an even workout between novice and experienced rowers, we suggest
having at least 4 novice rowers to fill a quart. Experienced rowers will be in
singles, doubles, or whoever wants to row together. Please sign up in the
calendar before Wednesday evenings, 8PM. Brian or myself, we will contact people
in case the rowing will be cancelled.
We hope to see you all out on the water soon - Mornings are great!!!!!!!!!!

We had a great masters meeting on Sunday at the boathouse - for those of you who were not able to make it here are a few updates on our successful rowing program!
1. Jayma Holliman and Kelly Bergdoll have agreed be our race committee and find out about races we can race in next year (and erg sprints in February in Melbourne!) and get us organized and registered
2. Stacy Dreher has agreed to work on creating a GAR Masters poster that we can put up around town
3. Laura Lazaridis has agreed to take on the coordination of the Tuesday/Thursday erg workouts with Justin
4. Justin Burgess has agreed to coordinate the Saturday novice rows
5. Amber Waters has agreed to coordinate the Sunday experienced rows
6. Michael Moseley has agreed to take all the bids by email for the Craftsbury Sculling Center fund raiser (he's also our great webmaster, thanks so much for doing this for us!!!)
7. Jen Figueroa has agreed to continue to manage the list serve
8. Amber Waters has agreed to continue to collect master's dues quarterly
9. Amber Waters has agreed to continue to coordinate the Learn to Rows - We all agreed the next Learn to Row will be on January 27th 1:30-5 pm and limit the class to 8 new rowers with 10 masters assisting and 3 coaches (2 quads & 1 oct). We will continue to offer this class every 2 months.
10. We all agreed that the novice rows will be open to anybody who has taken a learn to row class until the coach tells them they are ready to row in the experienced rows.
11. We all agreed for the next sculling dunk test to be held at the YMCA on February 9th from 8 am to 10 pm - Bill Feaster to confirm this date and time.
12. Everybody was encouraged to put together more rows that are convenient for them, get a coach, post it on the calendar, and coordinate it with other people who would like to row at the same time.
Thank you all for your help in keeping our club active! You guys are awesome!
Hope to see you on the water soon or out erging at the boathouse - those workouts are brutal but soooooooooo good! thanks Justin for keeping us going!

My work schedule and the Holidays have kept me from the water lately, and will keep me from the meeting Sunday, also. I would like to hear feedback from the meeting. Are there any novice rowers out there interested in forming a quad team to train for racing?
Can novice rowers race? Are there any used sweep oars and used sliding seats and used riggers available for sale?......for my dory. Has anyone seen the gorilla lately?
these are just some of the things that i wonder about.
Is the water cold?

How does the membership fee work? I just read an e-mail from someone else who mentioned monthly dues. I guess I thought we paid by the quarter? If it is monthly, I should be paying some dues as I've been coming out the past month. Let me know...
Thanks!

Happy Thanksgiving to all GAR Masters and new rowers!
Justin and I had a productive conversation today regarding novice rows and open rows.
Together we decided on a plan to help new rowers have the opportunity to learn with each other and give experienced rowers the opportunity to row together and get some experienced coaching.
So, the novice rows that are posted are only for people who have taken the last 2 learn to row classes. There will need to be a combination of 4 or 8 rowers needed for a boat to go out. If there are 8 then 2 coaches will take out 2 quads. So, please check the calendar prior to going out to make sure that there are enough people signed up to row.
The open rows are open to experienced rowers only. Justin will let you know if you are experienced enough to join these rows.
If you would like to row at any other time than what I have posted please let me know and
we'll see what we can put together for you.
Come on out to the workouts on Tuesdays and Thursdays - they are great and open to everybody.
Hope to see you on the water soon!
Have a great weekend,

Hey Amber, this is Dave Forrestel. Though i did not pay dues this
month (i knew i would not be around much) i would be willing to come
out and row sunday if you needed an eighth person. I would of course
pay the coaching fee. Just a thought.
Let me know by saturday evening so i don't stay out too late drinking.
Hope you and all the rowers had a great thanksgiving.

Hey GAR Masters,
We had a successful sculling LTR on Saturday - our class had 11 people attend.
I have posted novice rows for Saturdays at 10:30, hoping to get at least 6 people at a time signed up with 2 masters so we can take out the two quads or the oct.
If you are available please volunteer to help out with these rows so everybody can have a chance to complete their next 2 practice rows. (it doesn't cost you anything)
Thanks so much!

Amber - I'll be glad to work with any of these folks any time I can. Personally, after having coached six new folks in the oct Saturday, I can tell you that individual attention in doubles or singles would be a lot easier and probably more effective. I would also vote to not try so large a group in sculls again. It is much easier to work with a group in sweep boats, then go back to sculling once they have the basics down.
I'm expecting a couple of tose folks to contact me about private lessons. If they want to count those as their two add'l rows, then that's fine with me.
Please let me know if there is a small group who wants to come out at a time inconvenient to others. I'll work out something with them schedule-wise.
Thx for being so organized with this. Bill

We have 9 people confirmed to learn to row on this Saturday and I am expecting a few more to sign up last minute this week - according to Justin we can accommodate 14 people - do you know anybody who might like to learn how to row?
We only have 4 masters signed up to help - please sign up if you can help out this Saturday from 10:30-1:30 - you don't need to show up until 11:30 or so.
We need to have one master for each rower to make this happen - thanks a lot for your help,
Hope to see you on Saturday -

A total of 828 participants from 79 different teams rowed a total of over 78 million meters between September 15 and October 15, 2007. This year, Concept2 provided Concept2 carabiner keychains for everyone completing at least 100,000 meters and Concept2 travel mugs for everyone completing at least 200,000 meters. There were also downloadable challenge certificates, a downloadable iron-on transfer and a selection of Fall Rowing Challenge T-shirts available for purchase from cafepress.com/frc2007. In addition, we held a random drawing of participating clubs and selected the winner of a brand new indoor rower. The winner is Saratoga Springs YMCA in Saratoga Springs, New York. Congratulations to all participants! For a glimpse of the action at one of our participating clubs, here’s a video produced by an Albany area local news station about the challenge winner, Saratoga Springs YMCA. The Concept2 Indoor Rower offers a number of unique advantages and benefits to the aging population. More and more fitness centers are targeting this growing population, and rowing is a great way to reach them. Here’s why: User-controlled intensity: The Concept2 Indoor Rower allows seniors to row as hard or as easily as they like. The harder the rower pulls, the more resistance and the harder the workout will be. This is why our machine can be used by everyone from cardiac rehab patients to Olympic athletes. There is no danger of being forced to pull too hard. Seated exercise: For anyone with balance issues, the indoor rower is a terrific option. It allows the user to get full-body exercise from a seated position. In addition, the seated position is advantageous for people with a variety of foot and leg problems. It takes the full body weight off the legs and feet, but still allows the user to exercise and strengthen those areas while also promoting flexibility. Solution for vision impairment: For anyone with impaired vision, or even blindness, rowing is the perfect fitness solution. Concept2 offers free software called ErgChatter that gives a voice to the Performance Monitor, enabling vision-impaired rowers to hear their elapsed time, pace, meters rowed, etc, throughout their workout. Visit concept2.com/ergchatter for more information. Connection to a community: Rowing offers a vibrant community for seniors to join. They can join a challenge at their club or an online virtual team. There are even virtual teams composed entirely of rowers over 60! Interval Workouts with the PM3 or PM4 Interval Workouts are a powerful training tool. They help you build intensity and add structure and interest to longer workouts. It’s easy to set up interval workouts on the PM3 and PM4. By presetting the Performance Monitor to run your interval workouts, the Performance Monitor will count down your work time/distance and rest time, and store results in Memory or on a LogCard.
From the Main Menu, press Select Workout > New Workout.
Choose the type of interval you wish to do: Intervals: Distance, Intervals: Time or Intervals: Variable.
Enter the work time or distance for each interval along with the rest time.
When you have entered all the intervals in your variable interval workout, press: No More Intervals.
If you are using a LogCard, you will be given the opportunity to save the workout as a “Favorite.” If you think you may want to do the workout again another day, save it. You can always replace it with something else later.
The PM will display your first interval and will await your first stroke, when it will begin timing the workout.

In case anybody is interested Mitch Manahan would like to row with some of you if you are interested in putting together any boats over the thanksgiving weekend. I'll be out of town so I won't be able to coordinate it - hope you are able to get on the water! Amber

Amber,
Thanks for the quick response.
I am 42 and have been rowing for two years. I usually scull in a quad but have swept some.
If you could send me the rowing address that would be great. I am will be about an hour away.
Yes. We would love to have you come and row with us. I won't be here but you can check the adult rowing calendar and sign up for any open rows - just send me your phone number and I'll send out a group email to let people know you will be here - it's nice to have a phone number in case we have to cancel last minute for any reason. Do you know how to get to Newnan's Lake? Are you familiar with the Gainesville area? We usually have a coach go out with us and share the $40 coaching fee between whoever shows up.
Well, it's 6:10 pm and it's dark outside. I'm going to go ahead and cancel the rows we have posted for Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 6:15 pm and add an open row for Saturday mornings at 10:30 am as a winter open row schedule.
If any of you would like to organize rowing at any other time that the youth are not at the boathouse feel free to take the lead, put together a boat, organize a coach for a time that works for your group and get out on the water at your convenience - that would be awesome!
I'd like to find out if any of you would be interested in core strength training mixed in with erg training two times a week during the evenings for winter training. If there is interest I'll see if any of the coaches are interested in leading this for about an hour for $5/person - with a minimum of 4 people showing up - if they are willing. We've done this before and it is a lot of fun to work out with a group of people if we aren't able to row. So, let me know if you're interested and I'll put something together.
Have a great evening and I hope to see you on the water soon!
