Well I finally completed the series for 2004. After loosing my brevet card on the GA 600 and experiencing more problems on the Raleigh 600, I noticed that the Great Lakes organization was holding a 600 on the 26th. Shirley's home is not far from Delavan WI ( the start ) so we decided to drive up, me to attempt yet another 600 and Shirley to visit her mom. I did finish and I thought some of you might like a little run down on the course if you have never been up that way.
Shirley was very encouraging - trust me, Wisconsin is flat rolling farm country, she said. I had my doubts. The RBA didn't have a course profile and he was only guessing when he figured the climbing to be less than 15,000 ft. so I figured they weren't too concerned with terrain. The weather was predicted to be unseasonably cool (55-75) and overcast with no rain. That was right on the money and there was a good bit of flat rolling farm country, about half I'd guess. There's nothing even resembling a mountain of course but what they do have are moraines. These are geological features, i.e. hills, created when the glaciers retreated from the area during the last ice age. They come in two flavors, kame and kettle moraines. The kame results in a hill that's much like big surf - rising slowly and building for a considerable distance and finishing with a rapid increase in grade at the top like the crest of a wave. There were lots and lots of these and the very steepest parts, always at the top, went on much longer than I would have liked. During the 100 or so miles of kame you would come to the top of a pitch, look off into the distance and see nothing but these kame moraines, just like swells on the ocean. There was one giant kettle moraine. Your tooling along and all of a sudden you like fall off this cliff (if I'd been on the tandem I would have broken 60 easily) into the bottom of the kettle and go sailing across the valley below only to hit the wall on the other side for the pullout. I had to reverse the traverse of the kettle on the way back and I thought my knee was going to explode coming out of it.
The course was configured like this years GA 400 with a 400k loop followed by a 200k out and back. It was very convenient to get some shuteye and food after 400k and I was able to sample two of their routes. All in all it was a fast, scenic, course with about 20 or so starters. The Haldeman's of RAAM, PAC Tour, Desert Camp fame live close by in Sharon and this is the venue where their Brevet Week takes place. How do the courses compare to Georgia's? One rider that I had met at desert camp was there and finished in 24 hours. My times for the 400,200 and 600 were considerablely faster than in GA. Had to work hard but on balance, much easier.
It looks like our friendly spammer has coopted my

intelligent people into opening an attached virus. I
won't attach anything to messages to this list, so if

Mike, I think that David may have a bigger foot than you but it will
be a challenge to fill your shoes. Although, I haven't been able to
participate in many of the rides, those that I did went off
flawlessly except for the one where your efforts to stop the rain
were futile. Seriously, thanks for all your effort and sacrifice.
And to David, I wish you the best and I know that we will never sense
the seam in the fabric of operations. ----- Joe Neuwirth

Coast 2 Coast Challenge
By Tommy Campbell, Irish Independent, Evening Herald, Sunday Independent
From next week on, the cycling world will be in the throes of watching the Tour
de France - either on TV or in person. And traditionally, the month of July
inspires people to get out on their bikes a little more.
If you are a leisure cyclist, fitness fanatic or an elite competitor, Cycling
Ireland and the Diabetes Federation of Ireland - the nominated charity - are
staging a test in July: The 2004 Coast 2 Coast, which follows the scenic,
traffic-free Esker Riada historic heritage route from Ireland's east to west
coast and back over the weekend of July 10-11. The total distance of the even is
384 km and participants are required to raise sponsorship of €250 (£185) to
gain entry.
Completed registration forms along with a booking deposit of €50/£35 (no
cash) can be sent to: Diabetes Federation of Ireland, 76 Lower Gardiner Street,
Dublin 1.
It is also possible to pay via Credit Card on the Cycle Hotline: 1850 909 909
(00 353 1 8363022 from outside Ireland).
All proceeds raised from this event will go to the Diabetes Federation of
Ireland with a contribution being made to support Cycling Ireland's Youth
Development Programme.
The following was forwarded to me. -md
The Tyler Hamilton Foundation is holding live broadcasts of stage 13 in Regal
Theaters around the country. Here in Atlanta, it is at the Regal Perimeter
Point 10 at
7:00 AM. One can register for either $25 or $40 (with or without T-shirt) and
breakfast is included. Registration is available on Active.com and
links/information is available at the Foundation's Web site:

When Mike told me that he was resigning as RBA, I knew
the brevet series that he built had to continue, not
just for the selfish reason that I want to continue to
ride them, but for a larger love of the sport. All I
can promise you at this point is that we’ll continue
to have a complete brevet series, and that I’ll try to
make them hard enough to be a challenge but not so
difficult as to frighten riders away. I don’t yet know
how I’ll handle this job. I hope to ride the brevets,
which will mean they won’t be as well serviced as
Mike’s rides, but maybe with pre-riding some and doing
others in South Carolina I will be free to provide
some support. If you have any suggestions or requests
concerning routes or the way rides are handled, please
e-mail me on list or off list. Same if you see ways to
improve the brevets I host - don’t hesitate to
critique. Mike is irreplaceable, and I’m not even
going to try. I’ll just do the best I can to present a
challenging, fun brevet series. Each rider can help
the sport grow by bringing new recruits to the
brevets. See y’all on the road.

Sticking my twso cents worth in. Mike, you will be missed. I'll echo
Charlie. I've put on, supported, designed, etc. many events. I know just
how much work is involved. Then going out and essetnially being a one man
show, riding "high cover" on a group of individualists spread over several
hundred rural miles... I'm impressed and incredibly grateful. It was pure
happenstance that I entered this sport with this group, and under your
tutelage. Had I known anything then, I would not have picked any other by
choice.
Looking forward to Bundrick, but will miss you Mike.
Thanks a ton,
Steve
Maybe we could just refuse to accept Mike's retirement as RBA! Just kidding. I was race director of the Alabama A&M 10k Road Race for many years back in the last century and am well aware of the burden volunteer directors shoulder. I'm a newcomer to this sport so most of what I know about it is based on my experiences with Audax Atlanta. But it was clear form the beginning that Mike brought an uncommon devotion to the sport. Both Shirley and I have been inspired by Mike's support of the rides and the encouragement he has extended to us. I am well aware of the extra kilometers Mike went to on behalf of the riders. The painted arrows, the informal rest stops out in the middle of nowhere, the sag support, etc. Although we don't know many of the hardcore riders that well, I know that Dave is highly regarded among them and will continue an excellent tradition. Mike, we'll be looking forward to seeing you on the road for those brief moments at the start of future brevets.
It's with mixed emotions that I announce my retirement as the Atlanta RBA. I've held this volunteer position for the last five years and while it has required much time it's also been extremely rewarding. I've met some wonderful people and enjoyed watching many achieve their randonneurring goals. I want to particularly thank all of you who have given so freely of your time to help out with the brevets. I'm happy to also announce that David Bundrick has volunteered to replace me, pending RUSA approval of his application. Those of you who know David will be glad to hear this. David's success as RBA and the future of the Georgia series will depend largely on the support and assistance that we provide him. I feel fortunate to have been introduced to this sport (thanks Ray) look forward to many more miles with those unique and fun cyclists who make up the randonneurring community.
I will still be responsible for the 2004 RBA duties until all medals and cards have been mailed to you.

Mike,
I've known you for a long time, but I have only known you in the sport
of cycling this past year. I have really appreciated all the work you
have done and the wisdom and knowledge that you have shared with me.
I look forward to more riding with you and I appreciate the efforts
you put into the Brevet's this year. Your routes are challenging but
rewarding.
Thanks again.

That happened to me on the way to work on North
Highland a few weeks ago. Fortunately I was able to
miss the door, but it banged my pannier. I didn't even
look back, but the woman in the car must have had the
crap scared out of her, becaue she screamed.
On another subject, I went riding yesterday, starting
near Dawsonville where the Ga 400 stareted and riding
to Dahlonega, then west. I rode up the hill to the top
of Amicola Falls and the lodge up there. The sign says
25 degree grade. I wouldn't have placed it that high,
but it was a hard hill nonetheless, especially in
yesterday's heat. Maybe the lodge would make a good
brevet control. ;>) Has anyone else ridden that
grade?

Museeuw doored
Proving that it can happen to any of us, Johan Museeuw was involved in a collision with an unexpectedly-opened car door on Tuesday morning. Museeuw was riding to the Quick.Step - Davitamon Service Course in Wevelgem when a motorist opened the door of a parked car right in his path. With no way of avoiding the obstacle, Museeuw collided with it and fell, bruising his shoulder and sustaining a cut on his neck.
As they used to say on Hill Street Blues - let's be careful out there
A while ago, Margaret related an encounter with a
French rider who inquired about an "Atlanta" rider
named something like "John Haine" who rode vintage
bikes. I'd bet he was talking about Jan Heine, editor
of Vintage Bicycle Quarterly, even though he's from
Seattle (which could sound kind of like Atlanta). He
has an article published in this month's Rivendell Reader.

Fulton Flyers to Tour de L'Abitibi
The Atlanta, Georgia-based Fulton Flyers Junior Development Team will race the
34th Tour de L'Abitibi. Team director Tim Hagner will guide a team of four local
FFCC juniors, along with two juniors from other local teams. The team is riding
under sponsorship of Genesis Scuba, with two secondary sponsors- Hi-Tec Plating
and Yeager Precision Products- making the trip possible.
The FFCC riders are Jafer Beizer, Thomas Brown, Evan Halliday and Stephen
Schultz. Local FFCC rider and reigning national junior time trial champion Zach
Taylor is also riding L'Abitibi as a member of the Hot Tubes Elite junior team.
Founded in 1969, the Tour de L'Abitibi is a major international stage race for
juniors and the only North American event of the Junior World Cup. The race runs
from July 19 to 25, with nine stages in Val d'Or, Canada.
Whew! For those wanting an alternate activity to riding a 600K is to
(finally) close on sale and purchase of a house, then move in two days.
However, a few pre-requisites.
Number 1: Closing is postponed so often that there is no assurance
that the sale will close. You must go to attorney's office on time,
then spend 5 hours waiting for various people to do the job they should
have done over the past four weeks. Oh, yes, you have to have a four
month old baby with you. (Although the baby was the calmest of the
lot, I believe).
Number 2: Because closing was postpone so often, only minimal packing
has been done. Yes, one U Haul truck was filled with boxes, freezer,
etc., and two bunk beds taken apart, but the majority of the packing
has not been done. Too tired of packing and unpacking after each delay.
Number 3: Because of the wonderful negotiating skills of your realtor,
you have 48 hours to move out of old house.
The icing on the cake was when I went up to the attic, which supposedly
had only a few things in it, I discovered it was still half full! It
was a large attic.
The only benefit over the 600K I rode last year, I slept two nights.
It didn't really help. We are finally moved in, and I am recovering
about as rapidly (or slowly) as I did on the 600K.
The brightest spot in all this is that I can resume riding. Finally,
after two months of staying off the bike, I get to ride. Today will be
the first.
Another bright spot in the move is that the new house has a basement
(not yet filled up). If I hurry, I can lay claim to sufficient room
for:
A) Bicycles!!!!!!!
B) Archery stuff
C) High Power Rifler Target stuff
D) Camping stuff
E) The remaining space I graciously donate to my family!!!!! 8>)
Of course, as most of you realize, A - D above will probably be
relegated to what my wife deems appropriate! We won't go there.
Later.
MBW
Andy,
Lee contacted me in the interim and invited me on a Burnt Mtn expedition which I
took him up on. I may regret not joining you instead. Have fun.

Lance looked vulnerable last year too until he was accidentally knocked over by the fan while in the mountains. That really pi**ed him off, and I think that incident lit his fire. He thrives on the unusual. Don't count him out just yet.
Kinda early to be making such predictions I'd say, unless
you have some insight as to his heart rate monitor info,
etc. Sort of doubt that info will be on this week's Only
Lance Network broadcast. He's got no reason to be peaking
this soon, or even trying to win the Dauphine. His only
goal right now is # 6, why should he reveal his form?
I'd like to see him win 6, but I won't be surprised or
disapponted if he does not. There are many more chances to
lose than win and he's had a great run there already.

Mike, my plan is to ride from our house out past 6 Flags to South Fulton leaving at 8:30 on Saturday. Tom plans to ride as well as a friend who is trying to get some miles in prior to a trip to Utah that he and I have planned for late summer. Maybe some other nanimals as well. I anticipate some slow, steady miles with several stops in the 80 mile range. Interested? andy
