Count four centuries for me since Jan 1--the last 4 days of Gator
Hellweek in FL. Photos coming soon... Great variety of riding, but a lot
of major speed owing to visitations from Marc Patten and Rob Kish.
24-26mph flat cruising for miles on end is a rush!
Who's riding this weekend? If no official takers, I'll be at Silk Sheets
for the usual 60 with whoever shows up, then head out for another 40
mile loop after. My last ride for a while in the US since I head to
London on Sunday for a few weeks business.

Please do. The catch here is that we only need it for 2 days (or perhaps 1

Very coincidentally you've broached a subject that I was going to
eventually
pose to the list. For the Gainesville 200km & 300km I'd like to
borrow a cell
phone to serve as the sag number. This is the number someone would
call to
either report that he/she is dropping out or needs to be picked up
(SHAME,
SHAME, SHAME...). Since we had a 100% completion rate last year, I'd
hope
there would be no such calls this year. I hope to have 2 persons
supporting
both rides with the cell phone person staying in the call corridors.
I would
of course pay for any billed calls and also pick up all of April's
monthly
rate for its use on April 1st & April 15th.
If anyone thinks he can spare his phone for those two days, please
contact me.
Thanks,

For a little extra kick, add a few sardines to the mix. Can't stomach
sardines? anchovies would be a fine suppliment. Not only do these foods
have just about the perfect fat to proteen ratio, but they ensure that
noone will be taking unfair advantage by riding your wheel. also instead
of a boreing chedder, you might consider a good brick cheese, a
lindberg, or some other type that smells like peoples feet. with these
cheeses, you won't even have to pull out the sandwich from your pouch to
check for freshness. When it gets thouroughly roasted from the body heat
producecd by those awesome cycling muscles, you'll be the second to know
it. penny of course Being the first. by the way, I should have a cell
phone then, so that we can call the medi-vac when the mayo bites back.
all together now to the tune of "cocain", When you want an excuse 'cause

If you count sarturday and sunday, yes. I got no nibles for the century,
so I decided to do a ride a 10:00 from challenge schwinn. Ed Barns,
buck, Lee etc.. Only Ed and one other shoowed up, and after about 6 easy
miles ed dissapeared. The two of us put in 70 miles out past Arabia mt.,
out hwy 212 to smyrna rd then back in by way of the tucker ride
backwards. Sunday we did about 34 miles out around Greyson with our club
BCA, mostly steady, but with a little spirited screwing around. You have
given me a new mantra for the upcoming training rides i hope to make, NO
MERCY! See you out there. Walter

This is my official resignation from the bassmaster of the year
competition as well as the climber of the year competition.
I entered the year coming off a personal best 7452 miles in 99, and a
Super Randonneur title with high hopes. However, even on Jan 3 I can
already see it would be an exercise in futility to enter into
competition against such superior fire power.
It's one thing to have a chartreuse crankbait in your tacklebox. But
to adjust to the weather and rip it on the riprap on an overcast foggy
morning shows that Ming knows how to use it.
Now for his other weapon, the "Merlin ExtraLight outfitted with the
Dura-Ace 25th Anniversary grouppo" I can only bow my handlebars to the
new king of the block.
On second thought I withdraw my resignation and will battle for second
place, and the honor to see Ming use his weapons.

*When the revolution comes, will your bicycle be ready?*
Anybody log a century over the weekend? (Walter?) The Ga. Randonneur Century
Competition is officially under way. How many can you log between Jan 1st and
Aug 17th (start of BMB)?
Ming proved himself to be a early threat for the Bassmaster Award as he was
busily claiming warm bodies for randonneurring after the finish of Saturday's
New Year's Day ride. He was ripping a shallow-running, chartruse crankbait
on the riprap, what with the unseasonably warm temps. I personally witnessed
him get 5 strikes but we'll see what he shows up with in April.
Ming's new bike has made it's official appearance and it's a Merlin
ExtraLight outfitted with the Dura-Ace 25th Anniversary grouppo. (Mind you,
this is his rain bike.) Ming has made me promise not to reveal it's weight -
I'll only say that as he was warming up Saturday I accidentally sneezed and

That was what I was expecting when I signed, however coach Tommy C. informed

:-( I miss all the fun rides.
I'm going to do two short rides around here this weekend. Stay home and do
some woodworking if Home Depot opens Saturday. Build two cabinets to hold
our VCR tapes. (+180 of 'em)
I started at 5:50am last Saturday and did a 60 mile hilly loop. After eating
a snack at the house, I went out and did the loop in reverse for a total of
120. It was windy on the 2nd loop (like Gainesville). I felt good. (I
still have Greg in my ear to motivate me). Another long weekend next
Saturday, Greg's ride on Jan 15th, and them we begin the "Classic" season
the following Sunday. ( Been watching to many tapes) I'm entered, got the
hotel reserved, Cathy's going to drive, I'm pumped. Even installed and tried
out my old Scott time trial bars last Saturday. No more PVC for me. I'm
getting serious!!!!
Happy New Year to Penny and yourself!!
Jay
Penny & I will be "leading" a ride Sunday, Jan. 2nd, at 9am out of Boat Rock
Rd. Distance is not yet to be determined. Anywhere from 40 to 80 miles
depending upon audience. Take I-20 west; exit on Fulton Industrial (first
exit outside of I-285); bear left unto Fulton Industrial; Boat Rock is about
4 miles and at a stoplight. Turn right at Boat Rock and park at office
building on immediate right.

certainly no question that both parties earned their respective SR

Mike
Is this necessary? Last year's site didn't have this black mark included and I
wonder about it's usefulness. I'd especially have to question it as, from my
understanding, both Tom and Ming completed more than the necessary number of
brevets. Did anyone check to see whether there were any that could substitute
for
the one's that had a "blemish"? For example, according to ACP rules, if you
aren't able to do a particular length brevet you can substitute a brevet of
greater length. This is supposed to be the exception but given that this is a
purely garandon issue, I question stigmitizing our peers who we know and trust.

It's about time someone noticed. The meaning of the asterisks were intended
to note "exceptions" (and also to be vague). In spite of all our repartee on
this list, there is what our friend Mark Welden calls the "Dark Side" of our
sport. I believe Tom Cross has already detailled that fact that in 1998 he
accidentally circumvented the "wall" prior to Ceasar's Head mountain on the
Spartanburg 200km. Had John Bryan known, this infraction MIGHT have
invalidated Tom's SR that year, . Ming's asterisk... I can't PERSONALLY
detail this until next year's brevets are completed (statute of limitations);
only to say that it was even MORE insidious than Tom's infraction. Anyway,
ask me next year. :-)

I'm thinking about running a half page advertisement in the SBL Magazine in
either Feb. or Mar. $65 but I think entry fees will cover it. An article
would really be GREAT.

I would think that too however last year about this time I floated that
question on RANDON and Jennifer Wise responded that it was 2 or more PBP's.
Perhaps I misunderstood. Why don't you ask around.

Great web site! I might try to do a short, informative article on
randonneuring to run in Freewheelin' to drum up some new riders. There
must be more nuts than us out there. ~{:-}
