With the big race behind me, I'm starting to think about motivational goals for the next year. In the short term, I think I'm going to train for the Augusta Half Marathon on October 1st. This will be instead of the Augusta Half Ironman in September because I'm not sure that I can get off work for it. I'm not a big runner or swimmer, but I figured I could have done both with a little training.
Whatever I decide for 2010, I need to give my wife a nice non-bike related vacation and pay back a few favors (like crewing for my brother on some big event).
My thoughts are gravitating towards another solo RAAM attempt, even though I'm not sure that the outcome could be any better than that of this year. I'll have to assess my finances and the willingness of friends to crew for me.
Another option is the Elite PAC tour in 2010. From the website, it appears that Lon and Susan have decided to repeat the southern Elite route instead of the Portland to Pensacola route. Whether or not I decide to do this, I think it's an excellent way see what RAAM is all about without spending $15,000. You get excellent SAG support from two of the greatest long distance cyclists ever. The typical day is about 170 miles and is a good simulation of RAAM (at least during the day). Most of the riders are either RAAM vets or people who want to do it one day. I rode with Mark Pattinson, Scott McIntosh, Ed Pavelka, Byron Reiper, Rieks Koning, Charlie Combs, Richard Waugh, and Harold Trease. If you want to ride every mile of the tour, you have to be pretty fast because they SAG in anyone who falls below 14mph (including stops). It's a good challenge for strong cyclists. http://www.pactour.com/
