Span's running ability makes him a top Twins prospect
By David Dorsey
Fort Myers News Press
Denard Span: remember the name.
Fans of the Minnesota Twins and their Class A minor league affiliate, the
Fort Myers Miracle, soon will be seeing Span's fleet feet.
At 7:05 tonight at the Lee County Sports Complex, Span will start at center
field. He also will hit leadoff as the Miracle hold their Florida State League
home opener against the Sarasota Reds.
"Fast doesn't even describe it," said former Miracle manager Jose Marzan, now
the Twins Latin American Coordinator. "I played with Deion (Sanders) in
college. He's that fast. That's who he reminds me of.
"His feet don't hit the ground. Well, maybe they do a little bit. It's just
beautiful to see a guy run that fast. It's beautiful."
Twins management also has compared Span to Florida Marlins centerfielder Juan
Pierre and Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Kenny Lofton.
"I think my game resembles theirs a lot," Span said. "They just want me to
get on base."
Last Thursday, Span filled in for Twins centerfielder Torii Hunter at the end
of a big-league spring training game.
After getting hit by a pitch, Span sprinted from first to third on a single.
He then scored, tagging up on a fly ball hit by Michael Cuddyer during a 4-2
win by the Twins against the Boston Red Sox.
"I got to live my dream for a little bit," Span said after the big-league
spring game. "Now, it's back to reality. Now, it's time to wake up."
During his brief outing with the big-league team, Span caught the attention
of Twins manager Ron Gardenhire.
"I've watched him run," Gardenhire said. "He can fly. We like guys who can
slap the ball and run like the wind.
"He can really do that."
The Twins selected Span as the 20th overall pick in the first round of the
2002 June Draft out of Tampa Catholic High.
Since then, Span has made a slow, but sure rise through the minor leagues,
hitting .273 with 15 stolen bases last year in Quad Cities, a low-Class A team.
"I'm not sure how far away I am," Span said of reaching the big leagues. "But
I can tell you how far I have come. I'm starting to realize what my purpose
is in this organization.
"I want people to see me for more than just my speed. I think they're trying
to groom me as a future leadoff hitter."
Miracle pitcher Scott Tyler teamed with Span last season in Quad Cities.
"Whenever he puts the ball in play, he has the chance to beat the throw for a
single," Tyler said. "He gets on base. He can motor, that's for sure.
"He's great in the outfield, too. He's got closing speed. He can track them
down."
Twins minor league hitting instructor Jim Dwyer has been working with Span on
getting his hips involved with his swing and having him focus on hitting the
ball down to the ground rather than up in the air.
As Tyler said, any time Span hits a ball on the ground, he has a good chance
to reach first base.
"He just has to learn to use his legs," Dwyer said. "He's got real quick
hands.
"He can run them down in the outfield as good as anybody I've ever seen."

Brevard County Manatees Press Release
OK, Manatees fans, things have been flying since Hurricanes Ivan and Jeanne
ran baseball into hibernation to end the regular and post-season respectively.
In case you just came out of hiding and took down your hurricane shutters,
here’s what you’ve missed:
The Daytona Cubs and Tampa Yankees were awarded co-championships after
Hurricane Ivan pitched a shutout to end the season.
President George Bush visited Space Coast Stadium a few weeks back and if you
weren’t here you missed an opportunity of a lifetime to feel like a sardine
as the Secret Service ‘processed’ over 18,500 fans into The Farm one
beautiful
Saturday afternoon. The stadium seats roughly 8,000 so you can imagine the
logistical nightmare of this.
And, as most of you know, the Montreal Expos are on the verge of relocating
to Washington DC. The team will still conduct Spring Training here at Space
Coast Stadium. The Manatees will still play ball here in the summer months. And
we
’ll be right lining up more promotions for you. Same as last year, only
biggerbetterfasterstronger.
Our staff earned top promotional honors in the Florida State League and is up
for the top promotional staff in all of Minor League Baseball. That’s where
the fun begins for us, making it bigger, better, faster, stronger for next
year. And I think some of you will really be excited over some of the ideas
being
suggested for the 2005 season!
Yes, Russ, Belly Buster VII is on the schedule, so you can defend your title.
We’ll have something more ‘delectable’ this year than last season’s
chocolate-covered jalapenos.
We should have a finalized Brevard County Manatees schedule any day now,
complete with game times and locations. As soon as it’s ready to go we’ll
send
out an email newsletter to you and get it up on our website so you can print it.
Spring Training Season Tickets and Brevard County Manatees Season tickets are
now on sale…stop by our box office or call Jeff Weinhold at (321) 633-9200 to
make your reservations.
Coca-Cola is back for five giveaway nights again this season! Minute Maid
Frozen Lemonade is back for another Frozen Lemonade Giveaway Night. Fireworks
are
tentatively scheduled for five Manatees games. There’s more, lot’s more, and
as the deals get finalized we’ll get you the information.
We’re asking all fans to pass our web site and newsletter information along
to family and friends that might be interested. We’re not asking you to SPAM
your address book, but if you have friends and neighbors that are looking for a
fun night out, send them our web site and newsletter information.
The nationally renowned Christian Band ‘Mercy Me’ will be in-concert at
Space Coast Stadium on November 20th. This concert benefits The Haven. For
tickets, stop by The Haven located at Merritt Square Mall.
Brevard County Manatees Manager Tim ‘Rock’ Raines has signed on with the
Chicago White Sox! Rock will be sorely missed here at The Farm, not only by the
fans, but by the staff as well. Rock was one of those guys who would sign
autographs until his fingers bled. He understood the magic of the game of
baseball,
from playing it to coaching it, to sitting in the stands and being a part of
something special. It goes without saying that the staff and fans of the
Manatees wish Rock and his wife, Virginia, all the best of luck in the future
and
that they’ll always have a good seat and a cold drink waiting for them anytime
they can get back to The Farm!
We have a new survey question up on our web site…OK, it’s a slow news day
and a bit of humor was in the calling. Make sure you stop by and answer this
week
’s trivia question. Congratulations to the 57% of you that correctly selected
the Red Sox to win it all during last weeks’ poll.
If your organization is looking for a guest speaker at your next meeting,
give us a call at (321) 633-9200 x2079. You don’t have to wait until baseball
season as our staff is here year round! We can talk baseball and pepper it with
humor, big groups of small, just call does it all…(321) 633-9200 x2079.
Have a good week, everybody.
Rock On!

By MARC TOPKIN
Times Staff Writer
NEW YORK - The Boss and Vinnie Barbarino could be hanging out at the ballpark
together.
The unlikely duo of businessman George Steinbrenner and actor John Travolta
are talking about a deal to move the Yankees' Class A Florida State League team
from Tampa to the Ocala area.
Travolta, who lives near Ocala, talked excitedly about getting involved with
Steinbrenner and the team during an appearance last week on The Late Show with
David Letterman.
And Steinbrenner, who owns a horse farm and a hotel in the area, told the
Ocala Star-Banner, "If the city and the county can get together, it can be done.
It would be great for Ocala."
The move probably wouldn't take place for several years. According to the
newspaper, Travolta first has to find a location for a stadium and get the
cooperation of the Marion County government. If the project moves ahead,
Travolta
may get baseball legend Cal Ripken involved.
Tampa Sports Authority Executive Director Henry Saavedra said he heard a
rumor Steinbrenner might sell the team to Travolta's group. He was concerned
enough to have TSA lawyers look into whether it could be legally moved, and they
said it could.
Steinbrenner, who met with Travolta recently at Legends Field, told the
newspaper the major-league Yankees would continue to have spring training in
Tampa
but could play at least one exhibition a year in Ocala.
- Staff writer Bill Varian contributed to this report.
