There's an article in the Twin's paper today about
Mike Veeck and his daughter, who's battling blindness.
Veeck is part of the ownership group of the Fort Myers

We were treated to the All-star monsoon yesterday
afternoon, which caused to gates to open early, then
dampened pretty much everything except spirits.
The guys game out in groups to sign autographs and
rotated every 15 mintues.
JD Durbin stayed on for over half an hour after his 15
minutes were done and signed autographs for any and
all comers. He was great!
I said goodby to Joe and JD, and JD replied he hadn't
got the call up yet. Well...he got it after the game.
Three Miracle stars earn promotions
Mauer, Durbin, Abbott headed for Double-A
http://vh40039.vh4.infi.net/news/sports/030615fslsider.html
Quad city plays it's All-star game on Tuesday June
17th at Fifth Third Ballpark in Comstock Park,
Michigan. The Miracle will probably recieve
reinforcements directly after that.
The rain washed out the home run derby. Vero Beach
outfielder Franklin Gutierrez, the FSL leader in home
runs with 15, was declared the winner and presented
with a trophy.
The field looked GREAT. Excellent work by the grounds
crew, not only getting the field ready to begin with,
but getting it ready to play on after two hours plus
of heavy rains.
Phil E. Phox, the mascot for Clearwater, put in an
appearance with Rutgers on the DL. Phil entertained
fans in the audience. He is no relation to Fort Myers
public address announcer Sean Fox.
Despite the rain, despite the fact that the East beat
the West (Go West-Stars!) and we were cheering for
some guys we would never otherwise in our lives cheer
for, it was a pretty good night.
The only really down part was the fireworks display at
the end, which was, without a double the worst display
I've very seen Fort Myers put on. (I'm thinking it
was economic factors at work. The team spent a ton of
money on the All-star game and big fireworks display
just could not fit into the budget.)
Congratulations and much thanks to all the staff of
the Fort Myers Miracle for all your hard work, and for
making it a truely All-star weekend.

The 2003 version of the Fort Myers Miracle
accomplished everything they could during the first
half. They walked away with the division, finished
tops in batting average and runs in scored in the
Florida State League, but there was still one more
piece of business to take care of Thursday night at
Jack Russell Memorial Stadium and that was victories
by a Miracle team in a half. As a result of their 5-1
win over the Clearwater Phillies, the 2003 first half
champion Fort Myers Miracle can be considered one of
the greatest Miracle teams in history.
Win number 44 came relatively easy, but looked a lot
like many of their other 43 in the first half. Great
pitching, timely hitting and solid defense. Jeff
Randazzo tossed five solid innings allowing just one
run on four hits, while walking one and striking out
three to earn his third victory of the season. The
Miracle got on the board with an RBI double from
Michael Sandoval in the second. They put up two more
runs in the third on a sac fly from Joe Mauer and an
RBI single by Jason Kubel. Kubel finished the night
3-5 with two RBI and a stolen base. They tacked on two
more runs in the seventh on an RBI double from Joe
Mauer and an RBI single from Kubel.
The Miracle finished the first half 44-26 and walked
away with the Western Division title. They surpassed
the 1996 second half Miracle team, which had 43
victories and finished ½ game back of the Tampa
Yankees for a playoff spot.

The Twins say they probably will promote a handful of

Catcher Joe Mauer, one of baseball's top prospects, is
expected to be promoted from Class A Fort Myers to
Class AA New Britain. Mauer, the first overall pick in
the 2001 draft and a former Cretin-Derham Hall star,
is third in the Florida State League with a .332
batting average.
Righthander J.D. Durbin (9-2), who leads the
organization in victories, will be among the players
moving from Fort Myers to New Britain after Saturday's
Florida State League All-Star Game.
Class AA New Britain catcher Rob Bowen, who has gone
on a 31-for-73 tear (.425) to raise his average to

And you may have an infestation too!
Limited Taxonomic Data.....
Genus: Lagomorph
Species: ballus
Common Name: Ball Bunny
Territory overlaps: generally centered around
watering holes and baseball diamonds. Density depends
on number of available mating opportunities and
whether the team is in town.
Feeding habits: closely resembles Pirhanas. Consumes
beer in large amounts if available. Uses as excuse
for all behaviors every opportunity.
Mating call: "OOOOOOhhhhh! You're SO tall!" et.
al., accompanied by the rolled eye and coy smile as
the other portions of the chosen male are
speculatively observed for reaction. Success is
indicated by the piercing titter resulting.
Breeding Habits: Rarely travels alone, usually in
packs of 3-4. Known to share mates and notes on same.
Extensive documentation on multiple matings though
explanation of benefits not understood. Rarely
selective and never discreet. Mates as frequently as
opportunity presents in all locals and positions.
Physical attributes are broken into at least two
categories:
Juvenile: under aged and oversexed. Standard attire
is skimpy skirts and cut off, plunged necked
sleeveless tops, causing prominent display of budding
fertility. [This is the regional definition of a
"slut puppy"]
Mature: legal aged, access to enough money to spend
large chunks of time in tanning booths and exotic
boutiques. Standard attire is painted-on outfits that
reveal all the pierced and sensuously stylish tattooed
body parts; makeup thick enough to necessitate backhoe
for removal. Stacked heels and leather are popular
options. Abundant displays of trophy jewelry is
common. [Regional definition is "ho' dog"]
Miscellaneous: Hibernation is doubtful. Have been
known to migrate. Non-territorial as a rule. Will
resort to other sports if baseball males are
unavailable or not in season.
Are these the same creatures seen near your field?
Any interesting habits, abilities or variations seen
in other venues?

What else is there to play for after clinching a
division title? How about a place in the record books.
The Fort Myers Miracle tied their 1996 brethren by
winning their 43rd game, defeating the Lakeland Tigers
6-3 Tuesday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium. The
1996 team won 43 games in the second half, but fell ½
shy of the playoffs.
The Miracle got on the board in the first inning when
Brett Tamburrino led off the game with a triple and
scored on an RBI groundout from Tommy Watkins. After
the Tigers tied it in the third, the Miracle took the
lead for good in the fifth. Garrett Jones blasted his
seventh homer of the season, a two run shot to put the
Miracle up 3-1. Jones added an RBI single in the
seventh, as did Brett Tamburrino and the Miracle
cruised to the victory.
Matt Yeatman was solid, going five innings allowing
just one run on seven hits, while walking two and
striking out one. Beau Kemp tossed the ninth to earn
his seventh save of the season.

There was no letdown the day after the Fort Myers
Miracle clinched the division title, defeating the
Dunedin Blue Jays 5-1 on Monday night at Grant Field.
It was a rematch of the same pitching match-up that
started the pivotal six game series between the two
teams and once again J.D. Durbin out-pitched Jesse
Harper. Durbin tossed six innings allowing one
unearned run on two hits, while walking four and
striking out three to earn his ninth victory of the
season. Harper went 6.1 innings allowing three runs
(two earned) on five hits while striking out four. He
has now lost two games this season, both to the
Miracle.
The Miracle trailed 1-0 heading into the fifth, but
got an RBI double from Garrett Jones to tie it up.
Jones struck again in the seventh when he singled in
two and the Miracle took the lead for good. They
tacked on two more in the eighth on a two run double
from Stephen Tope. The Miracle are now one win shy of
the 1996 team for most wins in a half. That team
finished with 43 victories in the second half of the
season.

The Fort Myers Miracle got one run in the first and
hung on the rest of the way to defeat the Dunedin Blue
Jays and clinch the first half Western Division title.
1-0 on Sunday evening at Grant Field.
Colby Miller went 8.1 shutout innings, allowing five
hits while walking one and striking out three to earn
his sixth victory of the season. Beau Kemp threw one
pitch, in relief, and got Aaron McEachran to ground
into a game ending double play.
The only run for the Miracle came in the first inning,
when James Tomlin led off the game with a walk. He
went to second on a sac bunt by Tommy Watkins and
advanced to third on a single from Joe Mauer. Jason
Kubel then hit a sac fly to left to drive in the only
run of the game. Blue Jay starter Chad Pleiness went
seven innings allowing one run on one hit, while
walking two and striking out three.
The Miracle can finish no worse than in a tie for
first, but there is no playoff in the FSL. The first
tie breaker is head to head matchup. The Miracle are
currently 4-3 against the Blue Jays this season with
one game remaining, meaning they can finish no worse
than tied in that category. The second tie breaker is
divisional record. The Miracle are now 27-15 in the
west while the Blue Jays are 22-20 with just four
games to go. Even if the Miracle lost their remaining
four games and the Blue Jays won their remaining four
games, the Miracle would win the second tie breaker,
thus giving them the first half division championship.

From the Miracle website:
The Fort Myers Miracle ran into a good pitcher on
Saturday night and were blanked 7-0 at Hammond Stadium
by the Dunedin Blue Jays.
Blue Jay starter David Bush was almost un-hittable
going seven shutout innings allowing just two hits
while walking one and striking out seven. The bullpen
pitched the final two innings giving up just one hit
and striking out one.
The Blue Jays got all the runs they needed in third
when Jason Waugh hit a solo home run off Jeff
Randazzo. The Blue Jays would add two in the fourth,
one in the seventh, two in the eighth and one more in
the ninth in cruising to the victory.
Game comments: As Marzan put it "The bullpen has been
a bit of a disappointment."
Randozza has been fighting for control since he got
back. I know you have to pitch the rotation, but I
knew we were going to have problems when I saw his
name in the lineup.
Travis started it out with a bit of trouble, but then
settled down and pitched very well for the two innings
he was up there. Should have left him in.
Kenny isn't quite the workhorse he was at the start of
the season, and gave up three. Vorwald allowed one
run on one hit, giving him 14 runs (9 earned) on 16
hits - the worst run to hit ratio on the team.
The highlight of the game for the Miracle was James
Tomlin steal to third. Unfortunately, the Miracle
bats couldn't make it worth anything.

From the Miracle Website:
The team that makes the fewest mistakes wins the big
ballgames and the Fort Myers Miracle have done just
that over the first three games of their series with
the Dunedin Blue Jays. The Miracle capitalized on some
Blue Jay mistakes in the eighth and went on to win 3-2
on Friday night at Hammond Stadium dropping their
magic number to clinch the division to three.
Jim Abbott tossed a gem of a game, for the Miracle,
going 7.2 shutout innings allowing six hits, while
striking out four and picking up his fifth victory of
the season. The Miracle got a run in the sixth when
James Tomlin singled and advanced all the way to third
on a failed pick off attempt by Dustin McGowan. Tomlin
scored on a sac fly from Watkins. In the eighth, the
Miracle scored two runs without a hit. Three walks,
two wild pitches and another failed pick off attempt
gave the Miracle a 3-0 lead.
Beau Kemp tossed the ninth and after giving up two
runs, faced pinch hitter Kurt Keene with the tying run
at third and two out. Keene hit a hard ground ball up
the middle and Luis Maza made a backhanded play and
threw out Keene.

Much thanks to Kevin, who changed my flat tire for me.
(I owe you a beer!)
From the Miracle Website:
In order to win a division championship you not only
have to be good, but a little lucky as well. The Fort
Myers Miracle proved they were both on Thursday night
at Hammond Stadium, defeating the Dunedin Blue Jays
5-4 in 10 innings.
With two on and nobody out and the Miracle trailing by
a run in the bottom of the 10th, Jason Kubel hit a hot
smash towards the shortstop that looked to be a sure
double play. The base umpire, Chris Tiller, didn’t
have enough time to get out of the way as the ball hit
him and then caromed off the runner at second, Brett
Tamburrino. By the time Blue Jay shortstop Russ Adams
picked up the ball, all the runners were safe.
Tamburrino came into score on a Michael Sandoval
grounder to short, that forced the runner at second.
After an intentional walk to pinch hitter Jake Mauer,
Greg Blum hit a line drive, base hit to left that
scored Joe Mauer to win the game.
The Blue Jays took the lead in the top of the tenth on
an RBI single from Jason Perry. The Miracle took their
first lead of the night, when Jason Kubel hit his
third homer of the season in the bottom of the eighth,
but the Blue Jays tied it on a two out, two strike hit
by Aaron McEachran in the top of the ninth, sending
the game to extra innings.
Matt Yeatman tossed a solid game going seven innings
allowing two runs on five hits, while walking one and
striking out two. The Miracle magic number to clinch
the first half division title is down to four.

You are right about Dunedin's booster club that was a
splinter group from Baby D-Rays. The St. Pete folks
were really into it because their ball club was taken
away from them. Dunedin situation has great potential
but no one wants to promote the team. They have the
rest of Northern Pinellas,Northwest Hillsborough after
all Oldsmar isn't that far away and the untapped Pasco
County which has never had a team in the Florida State
League. You wonder why Dunedin plays in front of
small crowds like the Big League team to the south of
them. And some nights Dunedin's head count is closer
to a true number than at the Fruit Dome....

From the Miracle Website:
The Fort Myers Miracle took the first game of the big
showdown with the Dunedin Blue Jays 3-0 on Wednesday
night at Hammond Stadium.
The All-Star pitching match-up lived up to its
billing, but J.D. Durbin of the Miracle was a little
better than Jesse Harper of the Blue Jays. Durbin
hurled seven innings allowing just six hits, while
walking one and striking out two. He picked up his
eighth victory of the season. Harper went five innings
allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out
six and received his first loss of the season.
The Miracle got all the runs they would need in the
first inning. With James Tomlin on at third, Harper
unleashed a wild pitch and Tomlin scored to put the
Miracle up 1-0. They got another run in the fourth on
an RBI single from Garrett Jones and capped off the
scoring with a sac fly from James Tomlin in the
seventh. Joe Mauer went 2-4 with a run and has now hit
safely in 17 straight which ties the longest hitting
streak in the FSL in 2003. Tomlin also extended his
hitting streak to 13. The Miracle now lead the Blue
Jays by two games and their magic number to clinch a
playoff berth is six.

FORT MYERS, FL (June 4, 2003) – Miracle Baseball will
hold a “Salute to Sammy Sosa” during the Thursday,
June 5 game against the Dunedin Blue Jays at Hammond
Stadium.
After Sosa was caught using cork in his bat during
Tuesday’s game, the Miracle have decided to honor the
Cubs slugger by handing out pieces of cork to the
first 505 fans that enter the gates on Thursday night.
Along with the cork, the 21st fan (Sosa’s jersey
number), the 66th fan (Sosa’s number of home runs
during the 1998 season) and the 505th fan (Sosa’s
total career homeruns) will receive a corked mini bat.
“Sosa is one of the greatest hitters in Major League
Baseball,” said General Manager David Burke. “We felt
this was the best way to honor him during this
unfortunate incident. In typical Miracle fashion we
want to make light of an awkward situation.”
During the night, random fans will receive various
items that pertain to Sammy Sosa. Items include
corked mini bats signed by “Sammy,” the Miracle bat
boy as well as Chicago Cubs baseball caps. Fans may
also go to the Fifth Third Bank Customer Service Booth
and pick up instructions on how to cork a baseball
bat. During the end of each inning, the Miracle will
announce various uses for cork.
Any fan with Sammy, Sosa or Corky in their name will
receive one free admission to the Thursday night game.
The game begins at 7:05 p.m. Gates open at 6:00 p.m.
For ticket information please call the Miracle office
at (239) 768-4210.

From the Miracle Website:
The game lasted over four hours, the two teams
combined for 21 runs on 45 hits, but the Fort Myers
Miracle came out on the short end of things, losing to
the Lakeland Tigers 11-10 Monday night at Hammond
Stadium.
With the score tied at eight in the 10th, Ryan Raburn
of the Tigers doubled in Juan Tejada for the one run
lead. One batter later, Alex Trezza blasted a two run
homer to right field off Matt Vorwald and the Tigers
led by three. In the bottom half of the inning, the
Miracle tried to come back. Jason Kubel hit a two out
single that scored Joe Mauer and Greg Blum, to pull
the Miracle within one. Jake Mauer, however, flew out
to right field to end the ballgame.
The Miracle sent it into extra innings on a two out
RBI single from Luis Maza. Everyone who played in the
ballgame collected at least one hit. Joe Mauer
extended his hitting streak to 15 games and James
Tomlin extended his to 11. Tomlin has seven straight
multi-hit games. The Miracle now find themselves tied
for first place with the Dunedin Blue Jays, who
defeated the Tampa Yankees 6-4.

It's very rare for a booster club, especiall in the FSL, to have a website

The St. Petersburg Devil Rays had a great booster club whose members went to

From the Miracle website:
The Fort Myers Miracle rode the arms of three separate
pitchers and hung on to defeat the Tampa Yankees 2-1
on Sunday afternoon at Legends Field.
Jim Abbott tossed six strong innings allowing just one
run on five hits, while walking three and striking out
four. He then turned it over to the bullpen. Beau Kemp
pitched two innings, allowing just one hit and Jannio
Gutierrez pitched a perfect ninth to earn his sixth
save of the season.
The Miracle got the only runs they would need in the
third inning. Tommy Watkins doubled in Brett
Tamburrino to put the Miracle on the board. Later in
the inning, Greg Blum hit a sac fly to center that
scored James Tomlin and gave the Miracle a two run
lead. The Yankees scored their only run on an RBI
single from Jared Koutnik in the fifth inning. Joe
Mauer extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a
seventh inning single and James Tomlin extended his
streak to 10 games by going 2-5 with a double and a
run scored. Tommy Watkins was 3-5 with a double and an
RBI.

From the Miracle Website:
The Fort Myers Miracle made two mistakes to the same
hitter, on Saturday night, and that was enough to end
their four game winning streak as the Tampa Yankees
defeated the Miracle 5-3 at Legends Field.
Yankee catcher Dioner Navarro had an RBI double in the
third inning to tie the score at one and then came up
with the bases loaded and one out in the fifth inning.
On a 1-2 pitch he wrapped the ball just inside the
right field pole for a grand slam and the Yankees hung
on to win. Navarro finished the night 2-4 with a
double, grand slam, five RBI and a run scored.
The Miracle got on the board first when Brett
Tamburrino came up with the bases loaded in the third
and one out. He hit a ball that looked like it would
get into right field, but second baseman Robinson Cano
made a diving play and forced James Tomlin at second,
but Jake Mauer scored on the play. In the fifth, the
Miracle scored two runs, the second coming on an RBI
double from Joe Mauer. He extended his hitting streak
to 13 by going 1-4.

The St. Pete Times story actually doesn't surprise me. When St. Pete was
there, they referred to us as the AA affiliate even as we were about to end
our time there. They also once published a Clearwater/Sarasota final of 9-0
after five innings because of the ten-run rule. There isn't a ten-run rule
in Minor League Baseball (and it was only 9-0 when the rains hit).
