TAMPA, Fla. - New York Yankees prospect Tim Battle is
back on the field after undergoing chemotherapy during
the offseason for a form of bone cancer.
Battle, a third-round pick in last year's amateur
draft, played in 27 games for the Yankees' rookie club
in the Gulf Coast League before he was diagnosed last
July with B-cell lymphoma in his left ribcage.
The 18-year-old outfielder is among players taking
part in pre-spring training workouts at New York's
minor league complex.
"I'm feeling great," Battle said Thursday. "Everything
is good. I just can't wait to get started with the
season. I'll be more than ready to play. It was bad at
first, then I realized it was nothing but a bump in
the road. I just wanted to get back down here, get
back with the fellows and start playing again."
Battle hit .208 last season with no homers, five RBIs
and five steals. New York's minor league players
officially report in early March, and Battle is ready
to resume playing in games.
"It means everything to me," he said. "I can't wait to
get back out there."
