Eagles open new ballpark and make a statement with
20-2 win over Ed Waters College

Fort Myers, FL - Playing their first game of the
season in front of 762 buzzing fans at FGCU’s new
state of the art baseball complex, the Eagles
overpowered Ed Waters College 20-2.

In what was a true team effort, standout performances
were put in by sophomore catcher Jason Cooper,
freshman leftfielder Travis Parrott, and senior first
baseman Chris Brown. Cooper caught an excellent game
behind the plate and fired the first shot for the
Eagles with a three run blast off the leftfield light
pole giving the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the first inning.
He finished the day going 3-4 from the plate while
scoring four runs and batting in another three.
Playing in his first collegiate game, Parrott went 3-5
from the plate, knocked in four runs, and also stole a
base. Brown, building off his strong junior campaign,
had a solid day at the plate with two hits, two runs
scored, two walks, and two runs batted in.

The Eagles cruised for most of the game and went into
the eighth inning with a comfortable 10-2 lead, but
continued to pour it on with a 10 run eighth capped by
Adam Masino’s grand slam to left centerfield. FGCU
held the Tigers to only two runs behind four solid
pitching performances from sophomore Jason Short,
sophomore Chris Hassen, junior Billy Phillips, and
sophomore closer Chris Cahill. Short got the win
after striking out 5 and giving up no earned runs in
his four innings of work. Hassen and Phillips both
worked 2 innings a piece before handing it over to
Cahill for the ninth. As a whole the Eagle pitchers
struck out 12 Tiger hitters while only giving up eight
hits.

Antonio Rivers and Chris Matthews led the way for the
Tigers with two hits a piece. Picking up the loss for
Ed Waters was starter Anthony George.

The Eagles (1-0) will play a doubleheader vs
Clearwater Christian on Thursday starting at 12:30 pm
at the FGCU Baseball Complex.
