Hello Ladies!

As the Team Leader for the DC Triathlon Team Luna Chix - I'd like to welcome you all to our group!

Our purpose is to welcome women in the DC area to come an be a part of our Luna community through our various clinics and workouts, and maybe even at a race!  We are sponsored by Clif Bar who makes Luna Bars (yum!) and we also support and raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation.

We are looking forward to meeting you (& your friends!) at a workout, clinic, or race in the near future!

Hello Ladies,

I have just posted our calendar which contains our planned events for Jun. 

Basically we have workouts planned for 4  Saturday mornings (800am start) and the 1st and 3rd Tuesday evenings (700pm start).  We also have 1 clinic planned for Sat the 23rd.

To access the calendar, go the the Files section of this page, and click on the Excel file which lists the overview of each workout, and the TLCDC team member who is leading the workout.  Most workouts for Jun will be held at Hains Pt.

Directions for the workouts are also spelled out in a separate 'Workout Locations' Excel file, also under the Files section.

We hope to see you at one of our up and coming events!

PS:   For those of you go-getters a 'Participant Waiver of Liability' is also posted, which we need from each person who will be doing workouts or clinics with us.  Please remember to sign one prior to the start of the workout = Thanks!

Hi all,

My name is Cris and I'll be leading our first workout this Saturday.
We're going to do a bike workout consisting of about 45 minutes of laps
of the Haines Point Loop at a nice, easy spin pace.  We'll meet at the
golf course parking lot (927 Ohio Dr Sw, Washington DC.) and take off
for our first lap at 8:00 am.  If you're looking for me in the lot, I
have a big old green Explorer.

How did the first group workout go? Sorry I was unable to attend, I was being a supportive wife for my husband's first half iron this past weekend in NH. And, unless my bike (and husband who is driving it) is back in town by 7 on Tuesday, I will miss this Tuesday's workout too :(.
 
As an aside, this looked like a great race, if anyone is interested in it (there is an olympic and half iron distance) and where to rent a cabin nearby (that holds LOTS of people), let me know. Here's the link for this year's race: http://www.endorfunsports.com/moosemanindex.html

Reminder:  Run 30-45 min run.
            Leaving from the Vienna Caboose.
            Meet at 7pm.
            Bring plenty of water; it's bound to be hot.

            To get there, avoid 66 outbound unless HOV2 before 6:30pm!
Take route 495 to 123 Tyson's Corner if coming from Silver Spring area
or take route 7 to 123 Tyson's Corner if coming from Old Town area
before 6:30pm.
            On 123 in Vienna from Tyson's take a right onto Park St and
a left onto Church St.  Park near the caboose on the street or in one
of the nearby public parking lots.  I will be standing near the caboose
wearing blue nike shorts and a white T-shirt.

This Saturday we will be doing a 45-60 minute bike then transitioning to a short run.  I will be there to watch your bike and gear while you run so don't worry about that!  Remember to bring your bike, helmet, bike shoes, running shoes, fluids, etc. We'll have plenty of LUNA Bars for you. 
 
For any newbie triathletes out there, definitely bring your triathlon related questions!  Our 7 Team LUNA Chix members have roughly 35 years of triathlon experience and we would love to answer any questions that you have as the race season approaches! 

We'll meet at the golf course parking lot (927 Ohio Dr SW, Washington DC.) and take off for our first lap at 8 am so please get there early so we're ready to ride at 8 am.

WHAT:    Have you ever wanted to watch yourself swim? Sign-up and participate in a swim analysis clinic made possible by Team Luna Chix DC and Mike Gillette. A kick-off talk will be given to introduce the team, to talk about the Breast Cancer Fund (BCF), and to give some tips on open-water swimming. Participants will be taped above and below the water and will receive a dvd shortly following the clinic.

Anyone interested in doing this road race at 6:30pm on Saturday, June 23?
 
It is in Ashburn (Golds Gym off of 7 between Loudoun Co Pkwy & Ashburn Village Blvd). The registration is $25 through June 22 (and includes a technical tee). 
 
There is both a 4 mile run and a 1 mile fun run, with Summer Solstice festivities following the runs.

This was my frist year for the 4.4 mile Bay Swim.  I am still not too sure what I thought about it….

***GOALS***

2:00:00, about 26min/mile average

***RESULTS***

1:53:55, 25:54min/mile average

***PRERACE***

I woke up at 4:45am to be on the road a little after 5.  I had not slept too well the night before (I never do the night before a race).   I love that pre-race anxious/exciting feeling.  The drive was pretty uneventful until I got lost (the usual). I have real problems when I get away from Reston… the road signs for 495/95/etc are very misleading.  I called Julie O in a panic and she guided me in the right direction (Thanks ☺).   I think I am going to invent a tracker chip to place on me that when I call my friends for help they know exactly where I am.   When I call them and do not know where I am it is a little hard for anyone to help me.  Hmmm driving over the bridge I began to get very nervous and uneasy about swimming this whole way in wide open water.  I was happy to arrive at the Park & Ride at the same time as Julie and Jane and have company on the school bus ride over to Sandy Point.  We arrived with ample time to go to the bathroom, register, relax, go to the bathroom again and again ☺ Before the pre-race meeting it was fun hanging out with some of my World Gators family, Jane, Scott, and Ken.  It was great to do the race with you guys! 

***RACE***

After all the waiting we were finally on the beach.  The first wave was off and then it was our turn.  Beep beep beep boo boop beep as we passed over the timing mats.  And then we were off.  I had unstrategically placed myself right in the middle. UGGH…the start was NOT fun.  I just held my breathe and went…no breathing in that mess.  As we got to the bridge to start swimming down the bridge spans the crowd thinned out.  OH WOW….this is gonna be rough…we are not in Lake Audobon anymore!  Anyways I tried to position myself directly in the middle of the bridges (we were to swim inbetween them and if we went outside either one it would result in being taken off the course).  After getting into the middle I tried to think about good form and settling into a zone (which was a bit hard with the thrashing water and people).  After a bit (I had no watch so had no idea what my timing was…bad idea)….I came to a big orange buoy. This must be the 1st mile marker.  The current was coming from the left side and being a stronger left side breather I was swallowing a LOT of water.  I felt pretty good the 2nd mile and felt that I got into a good rhythm.  Then I started to feel yucky…I felt myself having a difficult time keeping in the middle and was being pulled toward the right bridge.  Every so often I would try to swim perpendicular to the bridges to get to the left one.  This was not working…so I gave up on that and just tried to stay in bounds.  Then I came upon another mile marker…I was hoping it was the 4th but was wrong when I saw the big 3 on it…CRUD.  I felt sick…I felt like I was going to be really sick after this was over.  My stomach hurt from swallowing so much water and my arms were cramping.  I felt like I was spinning my arms and going nowhere.  I was sad and wanted to be done.   Then finally the 4th mile marker...HOORAY only .4 to go (yea right…seemed the course might have been a bit mismarked).  This last bit took FOREVER.  As I got to the end of the bridge spans I was not sure where we were heading so I just kept swimming.  The course went to the right and then I saw the beach…although it was still SO FAR!  GOOD GRIEF!  I saw people standing up…so I would stand and dive down to try and get there faster.  Then I just swam with my head down and hoped I would get there.  I seemed to be drifting to the right as well..everyone else was way to the left.  And then finally I was there.

***POSTRACE***

It was strange to be vertical again….I went to a bucket to get some water and fell down into it because I wanted to be horizontal and my sensory perception was a bit off.  I drank the water and started feeling better.   There were some nice firemen with hoses so I got a shower, found my stuff, and then found my friends.  Everyone seemed delerious and staggering around.  

***LESSONS LEARNED***

Wear a watch.  Don't start in the middle.  Wear a sleeveless wetsuit (not necessarily due to overheating but the full sleeve really strained my shoulders toward the end).

***NEXT YEAR***

So that was the Bay Swim!  HUH  I still feel like I have been run through the washing machine.  Will I do this again?  If you would have asked me right when I got out of the water I would have said HECKS NO!  But now I say…You better believe it! (I just wish it was not $250!)

Hi everyone

Tuesday's workout is at 7pm . We will be doing hill repeats on the bike. We'll ride a 4-5 mile loop with a fun hill to climb in the middle. Goal is to do 3 loops but we can see how the group feels as we go. We are going to meet at the Wheile Commuter Lot in Reston. If you take the toll road you get off at Wheile Rd. and go to the right if you are coming from the east, take a left if you are coming from the west. Then turn left onto Sunset Hills and the commuter lot will be on your right. Please try and get there a little before 7 so we can do a quick stretch and get going on our bikes. Looking forward to seeing everyone there.

The weather is not looking promising for tonight. It is thundering and lightening right now. Not sure if it is going to blow over. Obviously if it is thundering and lightening at 7 we will not be having the workout.

Thanks so much for sending these out...I want to come train but am curious about how long it would take to get to Reston from the Dupont area. Work ends at 6ish for me and I would have to go home first. Might not have time today, but hope there will be more during the week training in the future. If i am in town this weekend I will be at the swim workshop and definitely down for some riding. Thanks again for all the organizing.

Hello, everyone!

My name is Andie and I will be leading the Luna Chix workout on Saturday. We will be doing a brick (bike-run) workout at Haines Point. The workout will begin at 8:00 am, and we meet at the golf course parking lot. The address is 927 Ohio Drive SW, Washington DC. We are very easy to find, because the team members will be wearing LunaChix gear! This workout will be a beginner-friendly pace, and I promise that it will be fun and that nobody gets left behind.
 
We will begin with a few loops around Haines Point on our bikes, and end with a 20 minute run, to get our legs accustomed to running off of the bike. (Whether you're new to the sport or not, this can be tricky!!)
 
If you are looking for me when you get there, I drive a blue Volvo (with a bike rack, of course) and will be riding a pink Felt roadbike. Please come out and join us!

Hi, everyone--
 
It's Andie again. It seems that Haines Point will be closed tomorrow for 4th of July setup. Therefore, we had to change our workout venue, and therefore workout.
 
We will instead be doing a running workout. It will take place on the Custis Trail, which parallels Rte 66 in Arlington. The Custis has rolling hills, which is great training for those of us who normally run on a flatter area.
 
We will still meet at 8 am, but you will only need your running shoes (and water)--I'll bring some Luna Bars to share. Let's meet in front of the Starbucks...the trail runs behind it, and there is a large parking lot.
 
The address for those of you maquesters is 3119 Lee Hwy, Arlington, VA
 
It is at the intersection of Lee Highway and Spout Run, very close to route 66. (Spout Run/Lee Highway is the exit, if you are taking 66). It is a stripmall, and there is also a CVS, Giant, Big Wheel Bikes, and The Italian Store.
