I meant better for New England audience. I live in VT and when the Red Sox
put their road games on 68 a few years ago it was impossible for me to get
them here. I don't know anything about the Pennsylvania TV market however
with real audio player if you are willing to pay you may be able to get the
radio broadcast through MLB.com

Why do you say that? Maybe it's better this way for those outside of
the Boston area who are still in New England, but I don't know that
I'd say that it's any better for those of us who are completely
outside of New England.

I don't know of any cable systems outside of New England(perhaps
excepting some in Western NY state) that offer NESN, either as a
basic or premium channel. Maybe you're referring to it's
availability outside of New England for those with
dishes/satellites? I don't know.

I live in an apartment(in Pennsylvania), so a dish/satellite isn't an
option for me. If I could get NESN on my(digital) cable, I would do
so in a heartbeat, even if I had to pay extra for it. But, as far as
I know, it's not available to me - nor to most if not any other cable
subscribers outside of New England, at any price.

Hello Red Sox Nation.
For those of you who missed the Red Sox spring training special on NESN last
night here is a summary.

-Pedro says he feels good however he would like to continue receiving his extra
day between starts which he thinks played a major role in keeping him healthy
last year.

-Also from Martinez who is in the final year of his contract "it would be like a
knife in the heart to leave Boston." However there is no deal yet.

-The starting rotation looks like this Pedro, Lowe Wakefield and then who knows.

-In the bullpen by committee these names were mentioned by GM Theodore Epstein:
LHP Alan Embree, RHP Ramiro Mendoza, and RHP CHAD Fox.

- For more on Fox go to:
http://boston.redsox.mlb.com/NASApp/mlb/bos/team/bos_player_stats.jsp?playerid=1\
14354&club_context=bos
Does anybody know why Fox's ERA was so high in 99?

- Nomar says he is healthy. This is very good news.

-The Sox home opener is 11 April. They begin the season on the road.

-This could be the year.
Matt M.

Millar played in 126 games last year. Almost all the games he started were
in the outfield. Surprising since I thought he was slotted for 3B or 1B.

His last two years hitting stats:

YEAR G AB R H HR RBI AVG
2001 144 449 62 141 20 85 .314
2002 126 438 58 134 16 57 .306

Another consistent hitter but what about defense?

FYI

There will be a Red Sox spring training report live from Fort Myers at 7 p.m.
Thursday on NESN. Also all the regular season games will be on NESN except for a
few that fall under the Major League Baseball television contract. This should
be much better television coverage for those of us that are outside the Boston
area then was the case last year.

Can anyone tell me which Giambi we got?

Rich Garces was going to try out with the Rockies in a minor league
deal, but instead he opted to retire.

Here's a link to the story:

Oh and on the Giambi/Daubach issue - I tend to agree, in the end
their numbers will be similar but hopefully Giambi will be less
streaky!

Nice to finally start seeing some video footage from Florida, UPN 38
has a Red Sox weekly wrap up Sunday nights at 10:30pm.

I think this is a "yes/yes" answer; Yes, Giambi will do fine at
first, but "Yes", we'll also wish we still had Daubers anyway.

I think he is a step up from Daubauch. Daubauch was too streaky never an
everyday player but a nice guy. I like Giambi - although I'd rather have the
other one!

Red Sox acquire 1B/OF Kevin Millar from Florida for cash
considerations

BOSTON, MA -- The Boston Red Sox today acquired 1B/OF Kevin Millar
from the Florida Marlins for cash considerations. Millar is
scheduled to report to Red Sox Spring Training camp in Fort Myers,
FL next week. Senior Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein
made the announcement. (Major League Baseball officials announced
yesterday that Millar had been returned to the Marlins' roster.)

Millar, 31, hit .306 with 16 home runs, 57 RBI, a .366 on-base
percentage and a .509 slugging percentage in 126 games for the
Marlins last season. The right-handed hitter recorded a .378 batting
average over his final 50 games, which included a career-high 25-
game hitting streak from August 24-September 19. Millar also reached
base safely in 43 straight games from August 10-September 28,
posting a .430 on-base percentage and .609 slugging percentage
during that span. He ranked seventh in the league with a career-high
41 doubles, his .335 batting average after the All-Star break ranked
sixth and his batting average topped .300 against both right-handers
(.302) and left-handers (.317). Overall in 2002, Millar played 89
games in left field, 22 games in right field, two games at first
base and one game at third base.

Millar set career highs in many offensive categories in 2001 with
a .314 batting average, 62 runs scored, 20 home runs, 85 RBI, a .374
on-base percentage and a .557 slugging percentage in 144 games for
Florida. He ranked seventh in the league with a .368 batting average
with runners in scoring position and he led the Marlins with a .412
batting average in interleague play.

A native of Los Angeles, Millar is a career .296 hitter with 111
doubles, 59 home runs, 251 RBI, a .367 on-base percentage and a .504
slugging percentage in 500 games with Florida (1998-2002).

Wakefield was equally Jekll and Hyde in Pittsburgh.
YEAR W L ERA
1992 8 1 2.15
1993 6 11 5.61

Then not even in the majors in '94. Clearly there's been a fine line
between unhittable and batting practice for Tim. I think he will come
through with a good year. He's learned how to mix up his pitches and he's a
wise veteran without the wear and tear on his arm that most 36 year olds
have. I just hope those nights when the knuckler doesn't dance are few and
far between.

You can also pencil in the Bosox games @Anaheim on Sunday April 27th
and @Minnesota on Sunday May 11th as ESPN Sunday Night Games.
Although ESPN hasn't yet released even part of it's schedule, those 2
games are the only ones listed as being night games on those Sundays
on the official MLB schedule(as of now).

If you remember correctly in 2001 he added a curve,
which accounts for his improved ERA in 2001 and 2002.

Here are Wakefield's statistics with the Red Sox (8 years with the Sox,
wow!)

YEAR W L ERA
1995 16 8 2.95
1996 14 13 5.14
1997 12 15 4.25
1998 17 8 4.58
1999 6 11 5.08
2000 6 10 5.48
2001 9 12 3.90
2002 11 5 2.81

I guess it depends on which Wakefield shows up this year - the one from

other years where his performance was like a marginal 5th starter.

3 starter. What do you'all think.

I have always wondered why the Red Sox have had
so much blue and very little Red in thier uniforms
and now they are going to change. I like it !!!
Here is some of the news from redsox.com

For starters, the club will have an alternate home jersey, which is
red with navy blue lettering. It looks markedly different from the
Sox's traditional white home uniforms with red lettering. And as has
always been the case for Sox home games, names won't be
on the backs of the jerseys.

The alternate jersey, which will be worn for
occasional home games, will go with a new blue mesh cap with a red
button and bill.

Little proudly donned the alternate jersey as he
went down an escalator. But relax Sox fans -- he isn't looking to
trade in his lineup card for a modeling gig any time soon.

"This is the first experience at this for me,"
Little said. "But you can look at this body and
tell I don't do a whole lot of modeling, unless this is a 'before'
picture in a weight-loss program. But I'm proud of what I have on
today. I think it's going to be a pleasant change
here in Boston.

"If we win games when we wear them, we might be
wearing them a little more. But any change is good. We enjoy this and
we'll have just as much pride wearing this as any
other uniform of the Boston Red Sox."

Wakefield -- the senior member of the Sox
players -- was decked out in what will be the team's new batting
practice jersey. It was similar to the alternate home uniform in that
it was red with blue lettering. The main difference is that the
players' last names will appear on the back, just like they do on the
road jerseys. The Sox will also wear the BP jerseys for Spring
Training games.

"I like it a lot," Wakefield said. "And that was
Mr. Henry's wish, to have more red." They are, after all, the Red
Sox, right? In recent years, it's been hard to spot the red in the
actual socks, which also contained white and blue. Many players even
covered the socks up with their pant legs.

This is why the Sox will break out solid red
socks that every player will wear in 2003. "It kind of started one
night during a direct discussion during a game," said Mike Dee, vice
president/business affairs for the Sox. "John [Henry] and I were
talking and I said I thought we were so under-represented with our
on-the-field representation. You have to respect the tradition and the
history of the Red Sox uniform. But in '75 they had the red
caps with the red crown and blue bill.

"We just thought we should take a look at doing
something to bring the uniforms to life. We both looked at each other
and he said, 'I like red.' He said it's the best. We wanted to
balance the scale. We had three great colors, white, red and blue and
only two were really being used. So we are taking the red and making
it more or less our home color and blue is going to be our road color.
"

During home games, the Sox will wear red shirts
under their uniforms. For years, they have worn navy blue.
Williams modeled a red fleece shirt that can be worn on the bench or
in batting practice during those inevitably cold days the Sox will
have early and late in the season. On the road, they will go with blue
fleece shirts. The team is also in the process of putting out
new red jackets. For years, Sox uniformed personnel have worn navy
blue jackets on the bench.

With the addition of Kent in the Houston Astros organization offering
a trade for one of Houston's pitchers could help them with their
tight payroll.... The sox should go after Wade Miller.

PHOENIX -- The Diamondbacks on Friday signed veteran infielder
Carlos Baerga to a minor league contract with an invitation to
Spring Training.
The 34-year-old spent last season with the Red Sox and batted .286
with 11 doubles, two home runs and 19 RBIs in 73 games. Baerga was
the American League's leading pinch-hitter, collecting 10 pinch-hits
while batting .345 off the bench.

Baerga, once a premier power-hitting second baseman with Cleveland
in the early '90s, will likely compete for a backup infield spot
this spring. Last season, he appeared in 17 games at second and also
played third in one game.

Arizona has made several veteran signings over the past week, inking
pitchers Manny Aybar, Mike Jackson, Ron Villone and Ricky Bottalico
to minor league contracts with Spring Training invitations.

Baerga began his Major League career with Cleveland in 1990 and was
a three-time AL All-Star while with the Indians.

I agree - I wish Daubach the best. He really seems like a down to earth guy, I
wish they could have kept him. Of course, I won't miss his hitting
slumps.... :)
