I would rty to market Varitek as an advisor to a young catching staff, and
there are a few in MLB. Somebody in another group thought that the Marlins might
have a pitcher or two available (don't they always?. Tek would have value for
their young C's. Watching the Marlins in their early years, I had wished that
they had madea a deal to get Tony Pena, who I thought could show the Fish guys
how to block the plate. Now, the Fish have the chance to get a good mentor for
Brett Hayes, though it wouldn't hurt John Baker and Ronny Paulino to get some
sage advice. Tek is slower now, but the mind still works.
I would trade Papelbon OR Bard, not both, if there might be an impact batter
in the mix. Dan Uggla has been mentioned, because of salary. Captain V could be
a bullpen instructor of the future. He could only enhance the Marlin rep of
developing young pitchers and cstchers, before they trade them away, of course.
The Marlins have ten players who made 7-figure salaries this year, which means
that they are all vulnerable. Could Hanley Ramirez return to Fenway? He made
over 5mil this year. Everybody on SoFla knows how much Marlins ownership hates
paying out a lot of money, as much as Theo loves to spend it.
