Hairston's home run isn't enough for the A's -

Scott Hairston homered in the first at-bat of his first start as the A's center fielder. Unfortunately for Oakland, the highlights pretty much stopped there in a 5-2 loss to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Nomar was absolutely one of my favorites. The talk shows were still trying to
badmouth him Monday, saying they didn't think he was sincere with his pre-game
comments. I think he is sincere and seemed to appreciate the ovation.

The unanswered question is was he a juicer and did this contribute to his quick
downfall, or was it just injuries? I still appreciate all he did, including
the 3 HR game I saw (the one on his birthday).

with his departure and the subsequent WS championship, we finally learned it
takes a team to win a title, not a star or two. Ask Yaz, Clemens, etc. It wasn't
Nomar's fault the Sox had to start Kent Merker and a hurt Saberhagen against the
Yankees in the playoffs.

The Oakland A's are in town, bringing Nomar Garciaparra to Fenway for the 1st
time since 2004. What are your thoughts as to the reception for Nomar tonight?
I think he will get a decent response from the fans, 5 years and 2 World
Championships will ease some of the bad memories of the end of Nomar's Red Sox
career. I still remember Nomar's 3 HR game on his birthday that I attended, I
think it against Tampa Bay

Red Sox fall to Mariners, 3-2

By Bill Ballou TELEGRAM GAZETTE STAFF
wballou@...
Picture
Boston reliever Takashi Saito removes his cap after giving up the winning hit to Seattle’s Chris Woodward in the ninth inning. (THE ASSOCIATED PRESS)
BOSTON —  It all seems to go back to Tuesday night in Baltimore when the Red Sox were cruising along on their way to yet another win, leading the Orioles, 10-1, in the sixth inning when, with two outs, they headed off the field en masse, thinking the inning was over.

Ever since, Boston has been a sputtering team. It wound up losing that night, and even though it won the next afternoon, it hasn’t looked sharp here these last two days and has lost twice to the Mariners, yesterday by a 3-2 score.

That makes it three losses in four games against inferior teams, all three losses being by one run. The Sox are not way off — but they are off just enough. They are not hitting in the clutch and their bullpen, in particular, is not pitching in the clutch.

Yesterday, it was 2-2 going into the ninth and Takashi Saito gave it up by walking three of the first four men he faced. Chris Woodward didn’t deserve a single on the 120-foot bloop he got with the bases loaded to knock in the winning run, but if Saito hadn’t have walked the bases full, the little popup would have been an easy out.

Instead, Dustin Pedroia dove and missed it by about a foot.

“Because of (Saito’s) lack of command,” Sox manager Terry Francona said, “you get in a situation where you have runners all over the bases, and we have to play the infield somewhat in.”

Saito was the loser on Tuesday night, too, and with the season halfway over, he has established one thing — he is the kind of pitcher who is not very effective when the game is on the line. Bring him in when one team or the other has just about wrapped things up, and he’ll get everyone home in a hurry.

Otherwise, watch out.

Saito might have had more of a comfort zone if his teammates had scored more runs, though. The Sox had just four hits and didn’t score after Jason Varitek’s two-run homer in the second off Garrett Olson, a pitcher they had regularly beaten like a Republican senatorial candidate.

Olson did not get the win, but he allowed just the two runs in 6-1/3 innings. This is a guy whose record at Fenway Park was 0-3, 8.82 before yesterday, and who was 0-5 lifetime overall versus the Sox.

The Mariners seemed to gain the edge in momentum, if not on the scoreboard, in the second inning. After Varitek’s home run, Jacoby Ellsbury singled and one out later, Julio Lugo walked. They then worked a double steal to put two men in scoring position for J.D. Drew, who struck out staring.

Boston threatened a bit in the sixth, too. It had Varitek at first and Rocco Baldelli at third with nobody out and Ellsbury up. Ellsbury hit a sharp one-hopper up the middle. The ball hit Olson and stayed in reach. The Mariners nailed Baldelli in a rundown, and then Jeff Bailey grounded into a double play to end the inning.

“On that play,” Baldelli said, “if it’s on the ground, I’m running. I even checked with (DeMarlo Hale) on the pitch before. Right off the bat, I thought the ball was going through to the outfield, but when it didn’t, then the only thing I can do is make sure they don’t get two (outs) out of it.”

The loss negated another excellent bit of pitching by starter Brad Penny, who gave up only two runs in six innings. Penny has only one win in his last five starts, even though his ERA is 2.20 in those games.

“That’s baseball,” he said philosophically. “I mean, you look at the last two games, the two guys pitched pretty well, but sometimes you lose. It happens.”

The Yankees won yesterday, so Boston’s lead in the AL East has shrunk to one game. The Sox loss also guaranteed that they will lose a series for the first time since losing two of three to the Rangers here from June 5-7. Recently, it hasn’t so much been the losses as how they’ve happened.

Walk-off wins are a much better strategy than walk-off innings.

Maybe this will get some more interest in this group

Hi I just wanted to do a quick post about a new website for MLB Baseball Fans.
This doesn't replace the forums - it's just for live chat during the actual
games.

www.LiveBaseballChat.com

LiveBaseballChat.com is a free site that allows you to chat live in real time
with other baseball fans during the MLB 2009 games.

A dedicated chat room for each of the 2432 games is started 30 minutes before
each game and closes 30 minutes after the game is finished.

You can invite your friends via Twitter or Facebook posts and we will have a
mobile interface so you can with other fans live from the stadiums using your
mobile phones.

Hope to see you at http://www.LiveBaseballChat.com soon

Cheers,
Dean

A Closer Look At The Fenway Sellout Streak
--------------------

June 18 2009

With their 500th consecutive sellout at Fenway Park on Wednesday, the Red Sox
became the first Major League Baseball team to reach that mark and the fourth
major sport franchise, joining the NBA's Portland Trail Blazers (744, 1977-95),
Boston Celtics (567, 1980-95) and Chicago Bulls (515, 1987-2000). More
important, in this streak of 100 percent capacity, the Red Sox have won 65
percent of the games. Paul Doyle looks at names and numbers associated with the
sellout streak:

While I didn't necessarily think so at the time, what we did at the House of
Ruth on 10/20/04 was BETTER than winning a WS.
That being said, no team can win at "Bambino's House" because they don't play
there anymore. Ruth (and Mantle, Gehrig, Dimaggio, et al) would probably feel
insulted by the new stadium. Criminy, I could probably hit 20 home runs a season
there...

Umm...That 2003 WS title by the Marlins, was really nice at the time, though.
