You hear this mantra in every sport – keep your eye on the
ball! It’s a perfect chant for the golf player at every turn.
If you can’t see the ball clearly, your chances of hitting it
are slim to none!
When you look at the ball, you want to keep your eyes on one
spot. Don’t look at your club to see if it’s squared to the
ball. Don’t let your eye follow the club as you draw it away
Just focus on the ball – nothing else.
Also, when you look at the ball, try to get a bird’s eye view
of it. Your eyes are about a foot above the pivotal center so
raising your shoulders isn’t going to help you see the ball
better. Don’t gaze at the ball along the line of the shaft of
your club. Look down on the ball rather than get your angles
along the shaft. This will give you much better results and you
won’t have a tendency to look up too soon.
Now, there’s a natural tendency in everyone to look away when
you start to draw the club back. Ignore that tendency and just
keep looking down on top of the ball.
When you’re looking down you’ll notice that (if you’re leaning
over properly) the only way you can keep the club head in the
line of flight is to keep your hands moving along parallel with
that line. Sweep your hands along with the club head while the
ball and head are in contact.
Mastering the skill of seeing the ball clearly until you hit it
is true of every kind of shot. Whether the ball is in long
grass, on an up or down slope, no matter what’s around you -the
main thing is to see the ball clearly to hit it accurately.
Very few golfers stand still when looking at the ball and
concentrate their attention on seeing the ball clearly. A lot
of the times people will give a glance in the direction they
want the ball to go, then they look back at the ball. Many
golfers would be shocked to find out that they don’t stand
still and keep their eye on the ball. The second your gaze
shifts from the ball during any part of the swing, problems
occur.
Really, a lack of concentration is responsible for most golfing
mistakes. You can hit the ball well when you can clearly see the
ball at every point in your swing from start to finish.
If you want to wipe out one of the worst golf faults, determine
that from the top of your swing until you hit the ball you will
keep your eye clearly on the ball. You’ll find your golf game
improving so significantly – your friends may start asking you
for lessons!

When teaching golf to kids, FUN is the name of the game. Throw
in all the technical jargon at the beginning and you will
effectively kill a child's desire to learn. Allow a child to
“play” golf for enjoyment, and he’ll become a life-long convert
of the game!
Hours of practice will only overwhelm a child, so just allow
him or her to practice a little bit at first, say 30 minutes.
This will keep motivation for practice high.
And it's okay to let them start by hitting the ball hard.
That's part of the fun! Don't worry about their grip right off
the bat. Just have them keep the right hand under the left and
then swing away!
I’d also make sure the child keeps his or her feet on the
ground while following through.
Now, if you want to buy a child's set of clubs, that's fine,
but you're likely to do just as well with a used set of women's
clubs. They're lighter and nice for kids. All you need is a
women's 9 iron, a 6 iron, 3-wood and a putter.
Let your child start out with little chipping and putting
games. This play will help him or her get the feel for the club
and the ball. Kids can bounce the ball off the face of a wedge
and try hitting leaves or twigs.
Little contests and games keep motivation high. Avoid pressure
or competition early on. You want your child to enjoy the game
and want to play it every chance they get, not end up so
confused and unfocused that they can't figure out what to do
and just quit in frustration.
If you’re encouraging, your child will love for you to play
alongside of them. Just don't start demanding wins and
emphasizing competition, or you'll pop the enthusiasm really
fast.
Children will move along as they're ready. Letting them
progress at their own pace prevents future burnout. Never make
a child play the game, unless he wants to. The game should be
fun, and a simple joy. Laugh and have a blast yourself!
If your child's interest increases, you might consider golf
camp or some private lessons with someone experienced in
teaching children. If you do seek a personal instructor for
your child, watch how the person teaches first. You really want
an encouraging person with a knack for teaching kids.
Also, please remember to teach your child the etiquette of
golf. Little things are very important, like… Don’t talk while
someone else is swinging. Don’t step in front of someone while
they’re swinging. Stand still. Don’t walk in front of someone
else’s line or through line.
Finally, never criticize. Praise their shots and swings.
Encourage them to correct certain moves, but don't dwell on
what was done incorrectly.
If you concentrate on the most important aspects of golf – the
enjoyment and the basics – you may end up with a child who
rivals you on the range and who enjoys a lifelong love for the
game.

Golf experts do agree on something. It’s not possible to play a
good stroke if your balance isn’t maintained throughout the
swing. Keeping your balance sounds pretty simple. But it’s nigh
impossible when you have a death grip on the club, your arms and
shoulders are stiff and you’re trying to hit the ball with every
ounce of strength can muster.
Beginners are often warned to not try to hit the ball so hard.
A little energy well directed and smoothly applied will drive
the ball father than a monstrous effort that ends up not
connecting the ball at the center of the club. If you’re
balanced, you have more freedom when hitting the ball.
You want to keep your head in one spot, your eyes on the ball
clearly. Actually the steadier you keep your head in one spot,
the better you see the ball. This is all part of creating your
foundation of balance. Anything that tips you off balance makes
it impossible to see the ball clearly. You must keep your head
still and not move it from the spot in which you start.
You can’t have your body rigid and your muscles tensed if
you’re wanting to maintain your balance. Unless you relax your
muscles, your head is going to move.
Practice in front of a mirror and you will see that your
muscles really do need to be relaxed in order for you to keep
your head still during a swing. No two people have the same
frame or physique. So you have to work out some things for
yourself. But always start with the foundation of keeping your
head in one position. If your head is still, you can see the
ball clearly and you will turn your hands at the right instant.
Just by keeping your head perfectly still you’ll correct a lot
of faults. You can’t grip your club incorrectly without at some
point disturbing your balance and moving your head.
And you can’t keep your balance unless you follow through
correctly.
If your mind is concentrated on keeping your balance and
keeping your head still, you won’t overswing or jerk your club
away. You won’t put forth too much effort forth at any one
point. You won’t be stiff and you’ll have a smooth, even rhythm
to your swing and a nice finish.
Balance really is the cure-all for many faults of golf. It
takes time before you see improvement, so be patient. Think
about keeping your head still and maintaining your balance at
all times and you will have a foundation for an excellent golf
game.

Balance - it sounds so simple! As a golfer, you know that
maintaining a proper balance is key to your game. And it's more
than just having the correct stance.
Optimal balance depends on three aspects - your visual
perception, the signals from the inner ear, and signals from
your muscles and joints. Sometimes these aspects get out of
sync, causing a balance disorder.
A lack of balance usually occurs when your head position
changes - which is a good reason to keep your head still during
your swing!
Migraines can attribute to a balance disorder. So if you have
frequent migraines, seek medical attention. These headaches can
affect your golf game in ways you may never have thought of.
Don’t spend a fortune on new golf equipment hoping for better
play before you check your medicine cabinet to see if any drugs
you’re taking affect your balance. The condition “ear poisoning”
seriously affects your balance. Ear poisoning is usually caused
by side effects of some medications - notably the antibiotic
gentamicin. Up to 50 % of people who take this drug experience
some sort of ear poisoning.
Diuretics can pose a problem as well. So if you're on any
medicine and you start feeling dizzy, get medical help!
Sometimes the dizziness can literally become a lifelong
problem, so don’t delay in seeking help.
If your balance is a little off in your game, you may want to
do some simple exercises to improve it. Just kicking a ball
around your backyard can help. You can also set up a little
obstacle course and weave in and out of it to improve your
balance. Your kids will have fun with the course, too! In fact,
they may even set up one for you!
You can also buy a balance board to help you with your center
of gravity. We found a handmade, well-crafted balance board on
eBay. These boards are challenging and fun to use!
In addition, working with flexibility exercises helps increase
your balance by releasing muscle tension. Try some simple yoga
stretches to help with loosening up tight muscles.
Another useful item is a yoga ball or exercise ball. Even just
sitting on one of these balls requires balance - so try using
one for part of the day. Work up gradually until you can sit on
the ball for 30 minutes at a time. These ball exercises can help
you develop proper posture, increase the mobility of your lower
back, and develop overall control of your body core.
Since balance is fundamental to every aspect of your golf game,
spend some time each day working on developing it. Who knows?
You could find your swing and your score improving
dramatically!

One of the essential cricket tips I ever learned was that of
goal setting. The ability to set goals and effectively motivate
yourself to achieve them are two essential cricket tips and
skills that will help you achieve success in any cricket season
or sport.
Starting a cricket season without goals could be compared to
batting blindfolded in the dark. What would be your chance of
hitting the ball? It is essential to set goals at the start of
the season to aim for: How many runs, wickets or catches will
you takes? Giving yourself a target to aim for will help focus
your mind and mentally prepare you for setting plans to achieve
them.
If when you start your cricket season, you have no goals and
aim at nothing; is it not unlikely that you will hit nothing
and achieve nothing? If you haven’t set goals, start now and
set yourself the goal to score 250 runs or take 60 wickets by
the end of the season, then plan how you will do it.
To set effective goals there are a few things you need to know
about yourself which will affect how you set your goals. You
are affected by, the environment in which you live, your
experience and knowledge, your attitude and dreams and visions
for the future.
When you set your goals you need to decide what you want and
when you want to achieve each goal. You should spend time
writing down your goals and display them in a prominent
position where you will see them daily to remind yourself to
stay motivated and focused. Cross off your goals once they’ve
been achieved, add new ones to ensure when you reach your
goals, you can further them and take your cricket to the next
level.

I’m sure you will have come across the SMART analogy, with
regards to goal setting. It contains the most important
concepts to consider and adhere to when setting your goals.
Goals should be; Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic
and Time related.
For example it would be unwise to set a goal of scoring one
hundred runs every week, it’s just not a realistic goal for the
average person, unless you are Michael Vaughn or Ricky Ponting
that is! As you would probably fail to reach this goal, your
motivation would suffer and you might start doubting your
cricketing ability.
Before you start setting your goals write a list of all the
things you want to achieve; whether it would be your first one
hundred runs, fifty wickets in the season or first catch. By
doing this it will help focus your mind and motivate yourself
to succeed.
Now set your goals, they need to be SMART and you need to set
both short term and long term goals, and also daily goals, for
specific match days. All successful cricketers set goals and
prioritise them in order of importance.
By making goal setting a habit there is no reason why you
cannot achieve your cricketing goals.

When fielding during cricket there are many things to think
about and consider depending on where you are fielding. This
brief article will look at a few essential cricket fielding
tips which you can incorporate into your game to improve your
fielding.
Where ever you are fielding you should always be on the balls
of your feet so you can react and change direction quickly. If
you are caught flat footed you’ll be slower off the mark and
potentially give away more runs.
Try to anticipate where ball will go; you can do this by
carefully watching the batters shape and movements. This may be
a little difficult at first but after a bit of practise will
become second nature and you’ll react much quicker to any shots
coming your way and field better as a result.
When you are fielding close to the boundary and have to throw
from the deep, try to aim your throw just above the keepers
head and the ball should drop nicely in to his gloves, provided
you have a relatively strong throwing arm.
When catching close to the wicket, such as in the slips, gulley
or short leg, make sure you stance is correct with your feet
shoulder width apart or slightly wider. Spread your weight
evenly across both feet, resting lightly on the balls of your
feet, with your knees flexed. Keep your hands together, close
to the ground with your fingers pointing down. Keep your head
up with your eyes level and stay alert.
When catching the ball in close, watch the ball all the way
into your hands, allowing the ball to come to you; don’t try to
snatch at it. ‘Give’ with the ball as you catch, cushioning the
impact. When catching in the deep, try and catch the ball at
eye level and cushion the ball into your chest.
The ball can come to you at any time so it is really important
you stay alert and awake so you can stop that vital run or take
a match winning catch.
These are just a few cricket fielding tips that you can
incorporate into you game; there are many more cricket fielding
tips for specific aspects of fielding. However these are the
general cricket fielding tips I’ve found to be the most useful
when fielding myself.

Ideally you should knock in any new cricket bat for at least
six hours, yes it's a lot but it will help condition your bat
for heavy usage without damaging it.
You should also knock-in your new cricket bat even if it comes
advertised as 'ready to play', as it still won't be ready for
the full force of a hard new cricket ball, especially if you
catch an edge or the ball hits the toe.
I've seen players go out on to the square with a brand new
cricket bat, which hadn't been knocked in. In the first over he
dug out a Yorker, which resulted in a 'fatal' crack in the toe
of the bat. If it had been knocked in properly it's unlikely
this would have ever happened. If you don't knock in your bat
you could literally be 'throwing £200 down the pan'.
To knock in your bat I highly recommend you use an old high
quality cricket ball.
Begin gently by tapping the bat, particularly focusing in on
the edges, as these are a very vulnerable part of the bat and
by the end you want the edges to be almost slightly rounded.
Spend 2-3 hours doing this stage of knocking in the bat, making
sure you cover all of the face of the bat, excluding the splice
area. Don't knock-in the back of the cricket bat.
After you have done this gradually increase the force with
which you hit the bat, making sure you systematically cover all
of the face of the bat. By the end you should be hitting the bat
with full force to simulate the impact of a real cricket ball.
When you have finished knocking in the bat, you should first
progress to using the bat for out field practice and then in
the nets against an old used high quality cricket ball,
especially avoid 'bat breaker' cricket balls, you know the
ones, cheap, hard and usually shiny. If your bat is going to
break or split it's these balls that'll do the damage.
Once you've played the bat in for a few hours in the nets it'll
be ready to take out on to the square.
It's a tedious process but well worth the time and effort for
the results you'll get for your hard work. Its worth mentioning
that some sports shops may offer a knocking in service for a
small fee. Personally I like to do it myself to see how the bat
progresses as it becomes more knocked in.

You should oil your new cricket bat using linseed oil before
you begin to it knock-in.
Firstly lightly sand the surfaces of the cricket bat with a
fine grade of sand paper. Then apply 2-3 light coats of oil to
all exposed surfaces of the bat, allowing sufficient time for
the bat to dry between coats, usually overnight.
It’s best to avoid oiling your cricket bat if it already has an
artificial coating. Also don’t stand the bat in oil as this can
cause the bat to soften and be more prone to damage.
Once you have oiled your bat and it has dried out, you can then
begin to knock-in your new cricket bat.
After a match always check over your bat for signs of damage,
such as cracking or splitting of the wood. You can repair
damage by sanding and cleaning the damaged area, then using
super glue or cricket bat tape to repair any small surface
cracks.
During the off season, avoid storing your new cricket bat in a
dry/warm location. Particularly avoid storing your bat in
direct sunlight or rooms in your house where there are
artificially high temperatures, as this will cause the bat to
dry out.
At the end of the season if is often worth applying another
light coat of linseed oil and again at the start of the next
season. But don’t over oil as you may end up weakening the
willow.
If you take good care of your cricket bat it should easily last
at least 3-4 seasons. However if you mistreat it and don’t care
for it, it will be much more prone to damage. It is normal
however to get surface cracks on any cricket bat, even new
bats, these are easily repaired with tape or glue and shouldn’t
affect the quality of the bat.
But if a major split does occur it’s worth contacting your
supplier, as they may send it back to the manufacturer, who
will often repair it or send you a new one. However if it is
clear the bat has been mistreated, it’s unlikely they will
repair or replace it.

There are hundreds of different batting tips in the game of
cricket which can all potentially improve your batting and run
scoring ability. Here is a selection of cricket batting tips
that I've found useful to help improve your batting.
- 1st Batting Tip - Keep your eyes level, it's been shown that
having your eyes level helps speed up your reaction time. It
makes it easier for your brain to process the incoming
information if your eyes are level when the ball is delivered.
- 2nd Batting Tip - Your first movement should be from the
shoulders towards the line of the ball. The rest of your body
will follow naturally and will help ensure you get correctly
inline with the ball.
- 3rd Batting Tip - Play the delivery based on its length, if
it's short; even if it's in line with the wickets it should be
'tonked away', Andy Flintoff style, to the boundary. The same
principle applies with full deliveries and half volleys.
- 4th Batting Tip - One of the most important things is to
watch the ball from bowlers hand in run up all the way to the
bat. By watching the ball in the bowler's hand you can see what
the bowler may be trying to do with the ball. Try to identify
which is the shiny side or rough side, so you can determine
which way they may be trying to swing the ball. The same
applies with spinners; but also make sure you closely watch the
wrist movement to determine the type and direction of spin.
- 5th Batting Tip - When batting against spinners, try doing an
initial 'forward press' by making an initial half-step on to the
front foot as the bowler bowls. This will give you a good base
to play from and help give you quicker feet.
- 6th Batting Tip - It is essential to maintain a solid base
when batting and to be in a solid position when you play the
ball. If you watch, for example Brain Lara play a cover drive,
he has a solid base from which he plays the stroke and he is
perfectly balanced.

When it comes to buying a new cricket bat there are a number of
factors that you need to address before making your final
decision to purchase a new cricket bat, such as:
- The brand,
- The size,
- The model,
- The weight,
…these are just a few factors to consider.
This article will look briefly at a few tips to follow when it
comes to replacing your old favourite bat with a new cricket
bat.
Choosing a cricket bat based on its brand really comes down to
personally preference, as realistically there is not much major
difference between brands. They all have cricket bats with
similar attributes and features; it is the variation between
models that I would pay closer attention too, not the brand
name. However it is worth mentioning that some of the new
Kookaburra cricket bat models are almost unique, as some are
now reinforced with a new graphite matrix, giving “maximum
power transfer and increased strength”.
When buying a new cricket bat, carefully select the model of
cricket bat that most suitably fits your style of play. As some
bats are designed specifically certain styles in mind, for
example the Kookaburra Big Kahuna, is designed for strong, ‘big
hitters’. Whereas the Kookaburra Kahuna Ricky Ponting cricket
bat is an excellent choice for a stroke player who likes to hit
boundaries.
It is very important when buying a new cricket bat to choose
the correct size bat. As a bat that is too large or too small
will only hinder your playing ability. I’ve found the best way
to determine if a bat is of the right size, is to stand in your
batting stance and rest the toe of the bat against the outside
of your back foot, lean the cricket bat so that the top of the
handle rests next to the inside groin of your front leg. If the
bat is of the right size it should rest comfortably next to your
box on the inside groin of your front leg.
The weight of a cricket bat is probably most important and you
should choose a lighter bat where possible. A lot of players
make the mistake of buying a bat which is too heavy and their
performance suffers as a result, this is especially applicable
to younger players who are often lulled into buying bats which
are either to heavy or too big. As an adult I tend to choose a
weight of around 2’ 8 – 2’ 10 oz, in a short handle (SH).
You should also take into account to grade and type of the
willow of the cricket bat. Most bats are made from English
Willow, which is a soft fibrous wood, with good striking
qualities and is the best option. There is also Kashmir Willow,
which is cheaper, harder and quite durable. It is often used in
junior bats and produces less ball striking satisfaction.
Always choose English Willow given the option.
Cricket bat willow is graded on a scale from G1+ to G4. A
willow grade of G1+ is the highest grade and is used by the top
professionals, it is the best willow and is unbleached with
straight even grains and no markings or discolouration. It’s
more expensive but as always you get what you pay for!
Grade 4 (G4) willow is often non-oil and will usually have a
covering on the face, such as an anti-scuff covering. It is the
lowest grade of willow, which is represented in the price. If
you have the money always opt for the highest grade willow you
can afford.
You can now buy cricket bats online cheaper than you can
offline, as online stores tend to have fewer costs associated
with their businesses and so can offer cheaper prices and
discounts. Also most offer guarantees on their bats so you can
return it if the size or weight is not quite what you want. A
sneaky tip; if you see a new bat you like go to your local
store, check the size, weight, feel and pickup, then buy
online, so you’ll get exactly what you want and save money in
the process.
These are just a few ideas and tips I consider when buying a
new cricket bat, most important are the bats size, weight and
feel. Obviously the price is an important factor, but by buying
online you can often save money.

An excellent cricket tip I picked up is the power of
visualisation. It is a skill which is often neglected by
cricketers. For batsmen, bowlers and fielders at any level of
the game it is an important skill that should be mastered.
Visualisation or guided imagery is a very powerful technique
that can help increase both your efficiency and effectiveness
in achieving your cricket goals, whether it would be scoring
one hundred runs, playing a perfect cover drive or taking that
vital wicket or catch.

can set out for them. Hold them in your mind until they become

All top class athletes utilise visualisation to mentally
rehearse what they have to do and how they are going to achieve
it. By doing this they train their minds and bodies to actually
perform the skill as effectively and efficiently as possible.
For example, before batting Ricky Ponting will have visualised
every stroke and shot in his many inning’s this season which
have netted him an average of over one hundred so far this
season.
When you begin to use visualisation techniques, you want to
mentally create a vivid scene in you mind of your wanted
outcome. You want this scene to be as detailed and clear as
possible, you need to be able to see, feel and smell your
success.
Actually visualise your success, picture yourself taking that
critical wicket or scoring that winning run. Visualise whatever
you want your desired situation to be, how it feels, what your
emotions are, imagine being in the situation and succeeding.
Make visualisation a daily activity, to go alongside your other
cricket training. By succeeding in your mind you will become
more passionate about your cricket and you will work harder,
pushing yourself to do whatever is necessary to achieve
success.
When using visualisation never ever consider failure or giving
up as this will likely be the eventual outcome. Always have a
positive mental attitude and draw on your success as
inspiration however small they may be.

Recently I was asked, “is ‘foot work’ really that important?”
When batting in cricket it is essential to have excellent
footwork. As good foot work is the basis for achieving
excellence in cricket and is the foundation for good batting
technique.
Foot work is absolutely necessary as all successful strokes
start with effective footwork.
If you watch Brian Lara, Michael Vaughan, Ricky Ponting, Sachin
Tendulkar, all of these amazing batsmen have outstanding
footwork, often when these types of players don't perform it is
simply due to lack of footwork.
Good footwork allows you to time the ball well and place the
ball in gaps. It gets you in the optimum position to hit the
ball, so you can hit it where you want and with ease.
If you have been struggling to play a particular shot for some
reason it could be due to poor footwork causing bad timing and
body positioning.
With faster bowlers it is even more essential to have excellent
fast and precise footwork, so that you can get into a balanced
position, in-line with the ball, so you can play the ball with
control.
Getting quickly into position through footwork therefore is
very important.
The more you practice your footwork against both fast and slow
bowlers the easier you will gradually find it. Many players do
what we call trigger movements just before the bowler releases
the ball, this helps get the feet moving into position and into
line much quicker and easier, especially against faster bowlers.
Next time you watch a game on TV watch the batsmen’s feet
really closely as the bowler is about to deliver you’ll see
these small ‘trigger movements’; small foot movements, which
help the batsmen get in position and inline early.
As a batsman it is absolutely necessary to develop your foot
work and foot movement, as all excellent strokes start with
effective and efficient footwork.

When bowling in cricket there are many possible cricket tips or
hints that can help improve your bowling.
In bowling, a combination of natural ability, good technique
and practice is the recipe for good bowling, whether it is
fast, slow or spin.
Here are some tips that will help your bowling and when
implemented correctly your bowling speed:
The basic grip to hold the ball is to keep the seam vertical
and to hold the ball with your index finger and middle finger
either side of the seam with the side of your thumb resting on
the seam underneath the ball.
In your approach/run in, try to stay:
- Smooth,
- Balanced,
- Economical,
- Rhythmical,
- Consistent and stay relaxed and try not to tense up.
During your approach and action, your head position is very
important. Make sure that as you approach the wicket you are
running at a steady, consistent speed, and increase strides.
Aim to keep your head as steady and level as possible, looking
towards your target.
Pull your front arm down and through the target area, making
sure you complete the delivery with a full follow through.
Try to keep everything in the same direction, towards your
target, keep your hips and shoulders parallel/in-line, and
follow through the delivery in the direction where you intend
the ball to go.
Also as a bowler it is very important to stay in great shape,
as you’ll enjoy the game more and perform better in the latter
stages if you have good stamina. So incorporating some light
weight sessions in to your training is important.
Also aim to try and run 3 times a week to keep your
cardiovascular system in top condition and to improve your
stamina. South African fast bowler Makhaya Ntini, is well know
for running 10Km every morning, even on match days!
But make sure you consult your coach/doctor/gym instructor
before starting any sessions.

As a batsman in cricket it is essential that you have a good
batting grip to enable you to play the full range of batting
shots with full control and precision.
The way a batsmen grips the bat often varies slightly from
player to player which is some times reflected in their batting
style. For simplicities sake the easiest way to hold a bat
correctly is to lie your bat face down on the ground and pick
it up with both hands as though it were a small axe and you
shouldn’t go to far wrong.
However, there is a definite recognised and 'correct' bat grip
which is taught by the English Cricket Board (ECB).
After picking up the bat ensure you have your fingers and thumb
wrapped around the centre of the handle with your hands close
together.
The shape should form a 'V', in line between the splice and the
edge.
This means that when you are holding the bat a 'V', as such is
formed between where the inside of the thumb and fore finger
hold the bat with each hand. The two 'V's on each hand should
line up almost centrally between the splice/handle and the
leading edge.
This is quite hard to explain without out a diagram, but if you
have a cricket bat nearby you should be able to try this out.
Often some players rest their fore-finger down the side of the
bat/handle and not closed around the grip; this is not
recommended as it can lead to injuries (possibly even a broken
finger) as you progress to higher levels, with faster delivers
and higher impacts.
Your top hand should rest nicely against the inside front
thigh. You should have a relaxed stance, with feet parallel and
around a foot length apart. Make sure you have you weight evenly
distributed across both feet and keep your knees flexed. The
stance is a side-on position in relation to the bowler and
should always be relaxed.
Your head position is very important and you should ensure you
keep your eyes level, as having a slightly tilted head actually
has been proven to reduce reaction time as it is harder for the
brain to process the incoming information. Keep you eyes level
over your toes.
Ensuring you have a correct cricket batting grip and stance is
essential to your success as a cricket batsman as all
successful shots start with an effective grip, stance,
backswing and step.

you have health problem or you want to have fit body, just do

- Choose for a low, supportive heel that rounds or bevels in.
- Find a flexible sole and more bend in the toe, so you will

- Look for a shoe that is light weight and breathable

thumbnails width or about a half inch between your toes and the
end of the shoe.
- Shop for shoes after walking or at the end of the day, when

- Try to walk around while fitting. If possible a few minutes
on hard surface.
- Wear your shoes in the house for a few days to try them out.
Don't go outside until you are sure the shoes are going to work
for you
Do those tips help? An investment in a good pair of walking
shoes is an investment that will last for a long time to come.
There are a great deal of delicate bones in your feet that need
protection and support. The last thing you want to do when you
make the decision to start working out, or to increase your
daily workout, is fail to protect your feet. I can't tell you
how many times I have jumped into a new routine only to injure
myself because I didn't have the proper gear.
Depending on your age and your overall physical state, it's
important to check with your doctor to make sure that you're
not overdoing it. It's also a good idea to get a feel for the
type of shoes that best fit your foot. Nothing is worse than
wearing a tight fitting pair of shoes that leave your feet
aching for hours afterwards. When you give your feet room to
breathe and arch support, you can improve your performance, and
overall physical fitness level.

One of the main problems for golfers is power. Yep, good old
power. It seems simple enough but power can be elusive to most
golfers. How could this be? simply everyone is unique in an
anatomical sense. Everybody has different muscle tone, muscle
development and even bone structure. This could lead to
multiple factors that affect power.
Having power in your strokes is a desirable asset. Longer
drives, lower scores and lets not forget, bragging rights. As I
said, there are many factors that contribute to the development
of power. And each one is unique as you are unique to the rest
of the people of the world. But sit tight co'z I'll be
introducing you to a breakthrough research that may be the
factor your lacking to improve you’re golf power thus having
longer tees.
One word, Plyometrics! If you haven’t heart of if, then you
should. And no it's not rocket science or some new name for a
synthetic fiber, which by the way what I thought when I first
heard about it. In a nutshell, Plyometric is any exercise that
where the muscle is contracted eccentrically then immediately,
concentrically. Simply put, the muscle is stretched before it
is contracted.
Why should you care about Plyometric? its because its one of
the best way to improve you're power. Common knowledge says
that you can gain power by performing resistance exercises. But
recent study shows that it is equally important that you factor
in the speed on how you contract you're muscle. So what you
should look for is not just contraction of muscles, but also
how fast you're muscle contracts. Such exercises could improve
you're golf power in less time.
Word of advice though, Plyometric exercises is not perfectly
safe, just as most exercise are. That's why it very important
that you get professional help or you'll be causing more damage
than helping. I suggest that you grab the book entitled "Jumping
Into Plyometrics" by Donald A. Chu. Unfortunately its not
specific for golf power development, But here’s the book that
the closest thing for golf, its entitled "Golf Fitness Guide".

I urge you to learn more about Plyometric. This is a fairly new
study. But its definitely worth the look. Its even backed by
National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA)
journal. They published a study that amateur golfers
significantly increased their power incorporating Plyometrics
in their training. This could be you're ticket to longer-drives
land and a little bragging rights doesn’t hurt too.

Golf is learned little by little one step at a time.
Not exactly a modern American game, is it?
Well, if your heart is set on “convenience” sports, you might
want to consider kickball or four-square. Golf isn’t learned in
a day. Or even a year. According to some players – even a decade
is too short! There’s no such thing as a perfect golf game.
That’s all part of the “beauty and beast” nature that makes up
this simple, complicated game.
There are some fundamental tips, though, that can shave a few
years of frustration off your career! Some golfers disagree on
even the basics. So I guarantee you’ll find somewhere someone
who will disagree with me. But here’s what I’ve found to help
golfers tremendously in improving their game.
The three most important steps that you want to keep in mind
all the time are
• keep your head still
• keep your club head traveling in a straight line while in
contact with the ball
• relax your muscles.
I really can’t say enough about the importance of keeping your
head perfectly still throughout your shot. I’ve seen frustrated
golfers of all sizes improve immediately upon concentrating on
this one step.
When your head is still, you can see the ball clearly. And how
can you hit something that you can’t see?
Keeping your club head traveling in a straight line while in
contact with the ball will help you avoid slicing and a host of
other ills.
Relaxation of your muscles aids tremendously in keeping your
balance. Balance is paramount to a good golf game and you don’t
want to have to brace your muscles all over your body. Stand
comfortably so you can reach the ball easily. As far as
propelling the ball is concerned. the muscles which add to the
force are the muscles which twist the body around. They’re the
most powerful. So relax those arms!
If your game is off, go back to these three important steps.
Don’t change your stance or swing. Just go back to the three
basics and you’ll get back on track.

I know what you’re thinking – golf on a budget! Can there be
such a thing? Well, it is possible, if you take a balanced,
objective look at the strategies used in marketing golf
products.
Case in point – I just interviewed a local golf shop owner
today. We were talking about the new golf balls, and he was
telling me that representatives from different companies send
him golf balls to use, hoping that he’ll recommend them to his
customers.
Well, he said he’s tried just about everything, and in his
opinion, they all play about the same now. Picking up a box of
12 Titleist balls, he said, “This one is probably the best.”
They cost $24.99 for the dozen. Then he laughed and picked up
another box. “But this one is our best seller.”
The box was priced $44.99 for the dozen. I looked surprised. He
shook his head and said, “It’s all hype. People think that if
the balls cost double, they’re bound to play better.”
Now we have the new hybrid ironwoods. Are they really going to
change your game that much? Or is it all a part of the
marketing pitch?
I heard one marketer say that since the golf market was so
saturated, he priced his clubs at three times the price of
anyone else’s. And he sold hundreds of thousands of dollars
worth. The clubs weren’t any more expensive to make than other
clubs. It was just a “market test”. And folks bought like
crazy.
Since no two people play golf the same - and everyone has an
individual physique and swing – a product that adds distance
for one player may not help another player at all.
Think about something you do very well that requires a piece of
equipment. You’re the expert in this area. Should everyone who
attempts your job then buy the exact same equipment as you
have? Will that mean they’ll be able to do the job better or as
well as you?
Food for thought, isn’t it? I enjoy gardening, and have a
lovely flower garden. But I only have one or two garden tools
that are considered the best. The other things I use because
that’s what I’ve always used.
So just because one golf pro buys one kind of ball or club
doesn’t mean that it’s the best for you.
The sales pitches that swear you’re going to add 30 yards and
never hit another slice entice us to shell out the big bucks.
But if you’re careful and have a healthy dose of skepticism,
you’ll save both time and money in the long run.
Remember, in the golf world, just because a product is more
expensive, doesn’t mean it’s necessarily any better.

The majority of the game of golf is putting – pure and simple.
It looks so easy – rolling that little ball into a nearby hole.
But mastering the skill has threatened many a golfer’s sanity.
Here are a few tips to help improve your putting skills.
• Use just one ball when you practice your putting. This is
closer to what a real game is like. You tend to concentrate
better this way than if you have a bucket of balls to keep
digging into. And be sure to practice your putting daily.
• Putting isn’t all in the wrists. When you’re putting, the
palms of your hands face each other. This prevents one hand
from dominating and ensures that both work together for you.
• Make sure you’re totally relaxed before you strike the ball.
Loosen up your muscles so they feel flabby and jelly-like.
Never tense up your muscles when putting!
• Make your back and follow through strokes the same length.
• Keep your putter face square by weakening your left hand and
strengthening your right.
• Rely less on your wrists and more on your shoulders when
putting.
• Keep that left wrist firm.
• Relax your knees a little. Don’t lock up.
• Your heels should be shoulder-width apart.
• Gary McCord advises that on curved putts, keep your feel
parallel to the line you’ve chosen, not parallel to the hole.
• As you make contact with the ball, you want to accelerate the
putter. Keep the putter grip moving toward your target.
• It’s better to miss a putt by sending it beyond the hole than
by having it come up short. Finishing off the shot will be
easier.
• Practice your putt at home on your carpet when the weather is
bad or you can’t get to the golf course.
• Find a putter that works well for you and stay with it.
• Have something at stake at every hole so you become
accustomed to putting under pressure.

Wearing the right shoes is an important aspect of foot health.
Better to be careful when choosing shoes. If you buy wrong
shoes it can cause foot problems. Even though, that doesn’t
mean the right shoes can correct your problem. It can only
prevent problem on your foot.
If you like sports -- basketball, golf or just walking --
choose the best shoes. Bad shoes can lead not only to foot and
ankle problems, but leg, hip, and even back pain as well.
That's because alignment begins with your feet and moves up to
influence the rest of your body.
Sure there are other activities you do during your life time.
Starting with walking around the house or traveling to work or
maybe doing exercise and other activities, there are always
shoes for all situations. Each shoe has their own
characteristic such as look, feel, smell and how the shoes
react to you, the wearer.
Here are some checklists you need to know when buying shoes.
- Check the shoes closely by touching it.
- Check whether the soles is strong and flexible when gripping
the surface
- Insoles should be cushioned to absorb the jolts of walking on
hard surfaces.
- Arch supports distribute weight over a wider area.
- Shoes made of leather are best because leather breathe like
skin and mold to your foot.
- Don’t buy shoes if not comfortable.
- Don't plan on shoes stretching with wear.
- Try shoes for both feet. Each foot is often different size.
- Do shoes shopping at the end of the day because feet swell to
their largest at that time. That’s why always buy shoes for the
biggest foot.
- Size depends on shoe make and style, too. Don't insist you
always wear one size if the next feels better.
- The heel should fit snugly and the instep should not gape
open.
If you already know what you should do before buying shoes,
another thing you have to consider is deciding which shoes for
what occasion. Obviously you would not play tennis wearing your
high heel dress shoes, right?
Here are some of the shoes that most people would have:
1. Dress shoes: This include dress boot, bridal shoes, prom
shoes etc. You can wear dress shoes to formal occasion such as
to a dinner, job interview or school event. At least you need
one pair of dress shoes, specially the simple traditional
dressy shoe which is a mid height heel at about 2.5 or 3 inches
high, black and opened toe.
2. Casual Shoes: This includes sneaker, sandal, boot, etc. This
is for more relax occasion. It can be any shoes with various
colors, style and for any occasion. This shoe is more
reflecting your taste, your favorite colors and your interests.
Casual shoes can be inexpensive, since it is made of different
material, not merely leather. The color is so various, that you
can choose what ever color you like. You can wear it for
shopping, relaxing, to cinema etc.
3. Athletic Shoes: It includes all sport shoes. There are so
many brands that you can choose, but there are a few brand
which specialize in sport footwear such as Adidas. You wear
athletic shoes during your exercise, jogging, walking, running
and other sport activities. However, currently there are some
people also consider this type of shoes as casual shoes, so
they wear it everyday for their activity. That’s okay too.
Shoes not only influence how others perceive you but they also
influence how you views yourself. From the style you chooses
and how well you are maintained, people can determine the stock
your places on their appearance. Show yourself that you are a
classy person by wearing the right shoes!

How can sports possibly be be romantic? It's simple. Just ask
any man who has cheered on his favorite team, while cuddling
with his wife, and he'll tell you.
Many women I know profess to hate all sports. Why? If it's
something your husband really enjoys, wouldn't you rather learn
about it, and share the common bond of sports than to have him
watch it alone or always leave to watch it with his buddies?
Me? I'd rather be a sports wife than a sports widow.
Before you start to panic, let me sneak in a disclaimer. No,
you don't have to put on a parka and sit through an icy-cold
Green Bay Packers game in November to show your husband your
love. You can certainly sit warm and cozy on your living room
couch together, to show him that he is special to you.
Does the thought of being cooped up indoors watching a game
bore you to tears? If so, take him on a trip to see his
favorite professional team or player. Or, for a more relaxed
date, go to a local Middle School or High School game. You'll
love the energy. It's hard not to get hooked watching those
kids put their hearts and souls into their games.
You're still not convinced? Why not show your romantic side
with your sports-loving husband in a fun, active way. No matter
what his favorite sport is, you can easily find a way to
participate.
Football Fans: Toss the football with him in the yard. If
you've never played football before or just got your nails
done, use a Nerf ball. When he lets you tackle him, you can
sneak in a kiss.
Basketball Fans: Shoot hoops in the driveway. Play a game of
"HORSE". The winner gets a back rub or snuggling afterwards.
That way you both win!
Baseball Fans: Play catch with a water balloon on a hot summer
day. Go to the batting cage. Or join a softball league
together. It's great exercise, and you get to enjoy time
together.
Hockey Fans: Dust off your rollerblades, grab a hockey stick
and a street puck and hit the street with your husband. What do
you have to lose other than a few inches off your thighs?
Fantasy Sports Fans: Join his Fantasy Football, Baseball or
Basketball League. It's a great way to get to know his friends
and also be one of the 'cool' wives. You might even surprise
him and win a few games.
Golf Fans: Play golf together. Or, if your finances are tight,
try a game of mini-golf!
NASCAR fans: Visit the local arcade. Find two racing games that
are connected so you can race each other.
Tour de France fans: This one is easy. Pack a lunch and a few
jugs of water on your bikes and hit the road.
No matter what you plan, it'll be a treat for him. And, the
next time you're watching an episode of Desperate Housewives,
don't be surprised if you find your husband sitting next to
you.

I know a lot of us golfers have headed up the main drive to the
golf course, in anticipation of hitting the big golf ball off
the tee. There are four main procedures that we all seem to
overlook at times. Hitting the big one, or launching it off the
tee has four important steps to consider before we let the golf
ball fly.
Tee it up! Why would golfers risk taking a divot with a driver?
The risk reward is far greater if you have the ball sitting
slightly off the grass. Sure you will get a lower trajectory
ball flight, but the chances of taking some grass with it are
greater. When you have just air between the clubface and the
golf ball, the club head speed will be far faster than having
grass in between. Tee it up and let it fly?
Alignment on the tee box is very important. I know a lot of
golfers have been fooled, including myself by the layout and
design of the tee box. The architect purposely designed the
golf course in such a way, that you have to think before you
act.
Nothing more discouraging, than launching the big one off the
tee in the wrong direction, sometimes you will find the tee box
facing southwest, and the fairway is heading southeast. To avoid
this directional hazard, one must stand behind the golf ball and
look down the fairway, and not down the tee box. Another
foolproof method would be to address the ball with the club
head behind the golf ball looking down the fairway and stepping
into position. Once your aiming in the right direction, go ahead
and launch it off the tee box!
I would like to think the third important procedure, would be
to plant your feet. I don’t know how many times we have stepped
into the ball and only to find out that our footing has gave
away below us, especially on early mornings because of the dew
on the grass or wet weather conditions. Have you ever seen a
golfer waggle at address? It may seem like a long ritual, but
it works. Planting your feet wil keep the upper portion of the
body steady for a good liftoff.
The other important procedure, is keeping your head still. Have
you ever watched Jack tilt his head up slightly and steering
directly behind the ball, before liftoff? His head is locked
into position. I’ve personally have tried lifting my head
slightly. I find by doing so, it leaves a little more room for
shoulders to turn freely through the upper coil of the body.
Keeping your head steady is the key indicator as to where the
clubface has to return for impact. In having a steady head will
avoid a lot of guessing as to where the ball is at impact. Lock
your upper portion of the body in place by starting with a
steady head and let her go!
With the ball teed up, right direction, a steady head and feet
planted, the golf muscle memory will take care of the rest.

up at a drop in hair salon without an appointment. I’m sure a
lot of us know what that is like? How I remember the group of
four kids in front of me, or three perms under the hair dryer.
Sitting there eyeing the hairdresser hoping that you’ll get
squeezed in. Same thing on the golf course, except your eyeing
the pro for the wave.
Getting squeezed into a group of golfers ahead of you can be
quite challenging at times, especially if all foursomes are
showing up to play. You can’t wander off to practice. The
minute you wander off to practice is typically when you get the
call to join a threesome. I don’t know why that always happens?
Your best bet is to lurk around the practice green and wait for
a golfer to mention that Fred or Mike can’t make it. A lot of
times they won’t mention it to the pro at the shop, thinking
they may get hooked up with a bad golfer or what you may call a
hacker golfer. The minute you hear Fred or Mike can’t make it,
that is when you say nonchalantly. By the way, my players are
going to be late and I haven’t got time to wait. Do you mind if
I join in?
Now having a tee time is a completely different ball game. You
walk into the pro shop proud and call out your last name. The
pro looks at you and says 10 minutes. Just think. When you have
a tee time and even when you’re alone, the pro is doing the
walking around looking for a group for you to tee it up with.
No golf course wants you playing alone when it is busy. When
they can’t find one. You still get to play at your tee time
slot. The pro will tell you to join up with a threesome or
twosome, a couple of holes ahead. Your king when you have a tee
time, especially if you’re playing alone. Everybody is waving
you through.
Trust me on this one. When you have a tee time booked. The pro
will find you a group or players to play with. No golf course
wants you flying through the golf course alone, if they can
avoid it.
In closing I would like to say, if you have a bad day at the
hair salon, don’t take it with you on the golf course. Please
book ahead.

A few days ago I was sitting at my terrace with some friends
talking about the warrior ways whilst having a glass of wine. I
like to have a good glass of wine now and then and especially
when it is a Spanish red wine.
I was looking at the colour of the wine in the glass and
appreciating the different aromas of it.
I realized that black belts instructors are much like wine and
most students are like the common guy who takes a glass of wine
now and then.
In my opinion a first dan (shodan) is the same as a young wine,
from a very recent year without time to mature in old oak
barrels. It’s flavour is nice, light and easy to drink. It is a
good wine to start with when you don’t have a clue about wines.
It will not give you a headache and a limited number of glasses
won’t make you drunk.
The same thing goes for the 1st dan instructor. It’s a good
technical instructor, easy to learn from and a great start when
you take up your martial arts study.
This instructor will need time in the old oak barrels to mature
but he will as his training continues and he keeps going on the
path that leads to master ship. The only thing that could get
in his way is his own ego. The moment he thinks he is a great
wine; he stops learning and steps out of the oak barrel. A good
instructor as well as a great wine needs time, lots of time and
patience.
As instructors we first of all need to be like an outstanding
grape, ready to be moulded into a fine wine. Next we will need
an outstanding dojo with a great sensei who can turn us in a
young wine , but this instructor has to have the expertise of
the master wine maker to take us to the level of a GRAN
RESERVA. To accomplish this he needs us to give all we have and
more. Not only 95% of our dedication is needed but 105%. Only
this way he can get all the flavours out of the wine.
But you must remember that time is needed. You can take the
best machines, the best grapes and the best wine maker, if the
young wine doesn’t want to go into the barrels they will never
become a GRAN RESERVA.
Spanish wine comes in different classifications. We have the
young wine which is classified as DENOMINACIÓN DE ORIGEN which
guaranties it’s origin, one level up is the CRIANZA, a wine
that already has had some time in the barrel, a RESERVA which
is a “master level wine” and finally a GRAN RESERVA which is
top of the bill.
But there is also the side of the customer, the average guy or
girl who goes to the supermarket to buy themselves a bottle of
wine to enjoy in a meal with their wife or husband. They can
off course buy a RESERVA or GRAN RESERVA and pay a lot of money
for one bottle but I ask myself, if they don’t have experience
in drinking wine, will they be able to appreciate this wine to
the fullest? Will they be able to notice the different notes
and flavours hidden inside? I don’t think so. In my opinion
they should get themselves a nice young wine or maybe a crianza
and start with this. It will be a nice wine, low cost and easy
to drink without headaches afterwards. After having acquired
enough experience with the younger wines they may start trying
the RESERVAS and when specialist in wine drinking (drunks ???)
only then they will appreciate the GRAN RESERVA to the fullest.
How can we know as a starting budo practitioner if the wine
(instructor) we are going to have is any good? As with wine
there is a label that guaranties quality. It’s called lineage.
Ask your instructor about his lineage. Who is his teacher? Who
is the teacher of his teacher? How long does his art exist? Who
are his colleagues, his co-instructors? Only when he can
demonstrate his lineage, reputation and the authenticity of his
martial art we will have a guaranty of it’s quality.
He will be accredited by his teacher’s reputation and by the
fact he still is actively training. A teacher who stopped
training is like a branch fallen of a tree. It will slowly
become a dead branch.
Unfortunately, many people think that they are real wine
specialists after having some young wines and therefore can
pass judgement on the quality of RESERVAS and GRAN RESERVAS.
How more wrong can they be?
First find the wine guaranty, next start trying the young wines
and CRIANZA and finally when you are ready you can enjoy the
RESERVA and GRAN RESERVA.

Looking around at different martial arts and the practitioners
there is one thing that surprises me very time. Many, may
people don't have an R-factor in their training and techniques
You see people who get almost punched in their face and they
just stay standing up with a big smile on their face. Others
get almost kicked in the groin and keep moving on as if nothing
happened and their "parts" were made of steel. Even worse are
those who tell you to go with the flow...???
all these people a lacking an important part in their training:
the reality OR reality factor (R-factor)
If you get hit in the face you won't be laughing, your head
will be propelled back or sideways, you will lose balance
because your body follows your head. The kick in the groin will
make you think your stomach wants to come out and the floor will
be very close by. Those who practice"flow jutsu" are rather
hilarious. Who to make a street fighter to go with your flow.
Will you tell him who to catch you, hit you or how to roll? Oh
and tell him also he can't resist because if he resists your Ki
can't flow.
These are only a few examples but take a look around. You will
be surprised how many people are lacking the r-factor. no
matter what martial art they practice Even high ranked
practitioners often make these mistakes on seminars you can see
them teaching elaborate techniques of 10 different combinations
who lack every sense of reality. They will give you some
explanation like this one: "First you block his attack, you
kick him in the groin, break his right at while you stick your
finger in his eye, than you turn around, kick his right knee,
enter on the opposite side , break his neck and throw him head
down. subsequently you go and sit on top of him, pull his head
back by grabbing his hear and applying a lock to his arm."
This looks very macho but not realistic. If you block and kick
someone in the groin, than the fight is over. He will go down
so fast you can believe it. If you kick would miss the target
than you can break his arm as a secondary option.
There are really very few people willing to continue a fight
with a broken arm. If this too misses I suggest you review your
techniques and train more because there is something lacking in
your execution of the techniques or the martial art you
practice.
A true fight doesn't take long, all is over and done with in
just a few seconds. Give it 2 OR 3 seconds more between 2
equally experienced fighters who know how to counter and block
but it's over before you know. The first one to make a mistake
will loose.
The 2 things that have most influence on the R-factor are the
teacher and the martial art. as a practitioner you must clearly
distinguish between martial arts and martial sports. Martial
sports are as the name already suggests a sport. Based on
martial art but with rules, regulations, protection and
competition.
The forefather of these sports, Martial arts has no rules ,
protection or competitions. Therefore the mind set, techniques
and approach is different So ultimately their goals are also
completely different. Whereas the sports oriented martial arts
give their practitioners a chance to demonstrate themselves and
their skills to others , martial artists on the other hand can
only fight with themselves and every real confrontation with
another person results in big damage for one of the two or
both. Martial arts are more realistic oriented than sports
because of their different goals. So let's focus on them. Those
who claim to be highly effective in true cases.
Be carefully with those martial things who claim to be martial
arts (on the outside they look LIKE martial arts) but who
surround themselves with a vail of mysticism and special
powers. (these special powers may exist but they will be
accompanied by a very special personality) Those martial things
are easy to recognize : no intense physical training, a lot of
talk about Ki, their masters and instructors hardly get
involved in training, and you need many years of practice to
develop these special mental powers. During these "many Years"
you will be brainwashed and teaching this mystical martial art
yourself to other people in order to make the NEXT generation
of "flow-kas"
Until you meet reality on the street...
The other risk factor is the teacher. as a basic rule you can
tell his R-factor by his Macho behavior. The more macho he
acts, the less R-factor he holds. His macho behavior will tell
you all. Why is there a need FOR a teacher to act macho? Who
does he have something o prove to? What does he need to prove?
If his techniques are ANY good than they will speak FOR
themselves, no need to prove this to people with no OR little
experience. OR maybe he has to prove his poor students that he
is the best? (Keep in mind that there is always someone better
than you are) This points more to a weak character rather than
a martial
arts master
some masters are very professional and perfect teachers but
they feel the urge to test the affectivity of their techniques.
This is very understandable and unfortunately this occurs many
times. How ELSE can you know if your techniques are ANY good?
The problem is not to be found in the fact that they want to
test their skills but in the fact that they use there students
to do this.. The students who are already convinced of the
affectivity of the techniques and impressed by the teachers
authority usually don't resist the techniques. off course this
will make the techniques work perfect. If they dare to resist
than there are 2 possibility's: 1) the technique works just
fine. 2) the technique must be forced.
This is the cause of technical quality going done the drain.
when USinG a lot of physical force most techniques can be
forced upon a weaker opponent but onLY by superior technical
skill you will be able to EXECUTE your technique on everyone. A
perfect technique needs a balanced use of skill, speed and
force.There is no need to be a superman to be a great master.
The best way to test your techniques is to do this with someone
of your same skill LEVEL/grade. This apply's for both students
and teachers alike. Both will learn a lot from this type of
training.
How can you bring the R-factor in your training as a student?
one of the problems is the great amount of techniques to be
found in the Genbukan Ninpo Bugei system. We have over 300
techniques from 10th kyu up to 1st dan. How do you cope with
this? First of all you must understand that as a kyu grade you
are learning to write and read so to speak. ( kyu waza) some of
the kyu waza are taken out of their context, other look useless
in true cases. Other look like old fashion and the last group
of techniques seem to be very effective. Which one do you
train? The answer is very easy:
All techniques must be trained...
Useless and old fashion looking techniques will teach you
concepts or moves that will result of the highest importance
later in your training. Out of the effective techniques you can
take 15 or 20 techniques and repeat them thousands of times
Until they become a reflex. This is what I call your F.H.T.C.
box (first help in true cases) Training the basic form though
is not enough. Try to do your techniques in another form.
Against a body grab, wrist grab, attack from different sides,
sitting on the floor or in a chair,. etc...
Soon you will be very skillfully in defending yourself. But a
warning is in place here: This training must only be done under
a master instructor with many years of experience. If I have
enough with 20 techniques , why must i train hundreds and
hundreds of techniques?
Because techniques are not the final goal. They are only a way
to... We use them in the same way we use mathematic formulas to
solve complex questions and get to the core of the technique.
Those 20 techniques won't save you when confronted with a
specialist. Especially noT if you don't understand the
underlying principles behind each and every technique. Ma-ai,
metsuke, kuzushi, etc... are only a few of them Every technique
and kata you learn will teach you a lot about the essence of
combat. to discover them you need a good teacher and lots and
lots of training. 3 hours/week is not enough. You need daily
practice to be able to discover the secrets within the
techniques. Every discovery will make the R-factor go up and
up.
During all these century's the way to make war has changed
enormous but the CLOSE combat, man to man fight is still the
same. A punch is a punch and a kick a kick. We didn't grow 3
arms or legs suddenly. The same principles and concepts
discovered in century's of wa and man to man combat are still
actual and highly effective. The world changes but man is still
the same man he was 2000 years ago.

Every day new martial arts are born and other disappear. They
look so different yet so alike. When choosing a martial art for
yourself or for your children it is sometimes very difficult to
pick the right one. If you choose the wrong martial art for
yourself or your children than you will end up with hundreds of
dollars thrown away on equipment teaching fees, and so on.
This is what happens to many people and after giving it a try
in 2 or 3 different martial arts they decide that martial arts
aren’t for them.
They are wrong; everybody can train and enjoy martial arts. It
is just a matter of picking the right one.
Now how can you know what martial art is the right one for you
or your children?
First of all you should start with a question list for
yourself.
Q1. Why do you want to practise martial arts?
The answer to this question will make a basic selection of the
martial arts and will leave you with the ones that are best
suited for you.
Some people want to practise martial arts to get a better
physical condition; others want to boost their self confidence.
Another answer might be that you want to be able to defend
yourself. Some people even go to the martial arts dojos to have
a good time or for the community feeling.
Make sure you find information about the different martial arts
and compare the information. Don’t only look at the information
about a martial art in from 1 source. Find relevant information
from different sources on the same subject.
Only after having read sufficient information about the martial
arts you like you will be able to choose.
So now make a pre-selection of the martial arts you like
Q2. What do you want to achieve practising a martial art?
Do you want to be able to win tournaments, defend yourself
against many attackers or is your ultimate goal to become an
instructor? Off course there are probably as many goals as
there are practitioners but you get the idea.
The final goal of becoming a practitioner will determine the
way to go, the time to spend on training, etc…
When you have answered this question you should take a look at
those martial art systems that will enable you to reach your
goal. Most schools and systems provide lot’s of information on
the possibilities they have for students.
One important point here is that you should be very selective
and ask around when choosing a martial arts system or school.
There are many strange systems out there that only want to get
your money instead of teaching you.
The best way to know what school is right for you is to take a
look at the human and martial arts quality of the high level
students. Ask yourself: Do I want to be of the same level as
they are?
This will allow you to narrow the possibilities to only a few
different systems
Q3. How much do you want to invest in your training?
I do not mean only spending money in tuition fees but also in
time. Do you have the time to travel to the dojo and spend the
hours needed to train? Are you willing to buy the equipment
needed? How much do you want to spend on travelling to seminars
or tournaments?
This question is as important as the previous ones; some
martial arts equipment is very expensive like the kendo or
kyudo equipment, other martial arts are a lot cheaper. How much
do you want to spend on equipment.
Next, check out how many schools there are close to you where
they teach the martial art you selected. VISIT THEM ALL!!!!
Talk with the instructor, ask him if you can witness a session,
look at the behaviour of the other students, ask if you can
participate in a free session to give it a try and make
inquiries about the tuition and insurance fees.
After visiting ALL of them sit down and write down on a piece
of paper the pro’s and contra’s of each of them. Take a look at
the list and compare. Listen to your inner voice and after
waiting for at least 1 week decide which school you will become
a member of.
By answering these 3 questions and following this guideline you
can easily find the right martial art for you.

It is no secret that most of the male and female tour players
who want to play their best golf, do golf weight training
exercises. But it’s not the kind of grueling, sweating stuff
you’re thinking about.
There is a HUGE misconception of what and how this type of
program should be done. It does not take going into a gym and
lifting heavy weights; nor does it take a 2-3 hour daily
commitment.
I have seen many “so-called” golf weight training programs,
books, and videos etc that do in fact show the golfer in the
gym and on machines. Sitting on a machine, isolating one muscle
group is not golf-specific or sport-specific for that matter.
Golf is a dynamic movement done on your feet. Sitting in a
machine in a “controlled” environment will not improve your
swing.
The golf swing incorporates most of the muscles of the body in
a sequential motion. I hope you can now see sitting in a
machine won’t improve that.
So what truly is a ‘golf-specific’ program?
For starters, doing a lot of exercise ‘on your feet’ and in
your golf posture will help. The more you can get in your
posture and strength train, the quicker the benefit to your
game.
Golf also involves balance and stabilization. To improve this
takes a concentrated effort on core work and exercises
involving balance (such as one-legged exercises).
The more popular golf-exercises are done on a stability ball;
using exercise tubing; handweights; and even weighted medicine
balls.
This allows you to do many dynamic movements similar to your
golf swing, directly relating to more power, distance and
accuracy.
These pieces of equipment are very inexpensive and portable.
You can have a complete golf fitness gym in your home for under
$100 easily.
For example, exercise tubing is approximately $20 and you can
immediately do golf swings with it. This is as golf-specific as
you can get. Doing your actual movement with resistance will
dramatically increase your power output.
There are dozens of simple, golf weight training exercises you
can do with the above equipment (and in your home). The beauty
of this type of golf training is saving time and money, but
most importantly making it fun and enjoyable.
When you do these types of golf weight training exercises you
will be encouraged that it will be the missing link to your
best game.
Often, we try to get on the fitness, weight-loss bandwagon,
only to quit after just a week or so. With the above type of
training, your doing both. You not only see a dramatic
improvement in your game, but the icing on the cake is looking
and feeling better.
I have worked with hundreds, if not thousands of golfers via
the web who have sent me emails stating how they have stuck
with their programs longer than any other time in their life.
They say the connection between health and golf is what did it.
So don’t get overwhelmed the next time you here about golf
weight training. With a little research, you can be doing your
golf weight training program in your home in no time.
