Here's an article that appeared in the Pittsburgh Tribune about Rugby. We might want to do another focusing on expanding rugby in the region --- with the women's team starting and the men's becoming active members of the PRU.

If anyone is interested in playing this weekend, please post, email, or call me 540-421-9640. I'll need to confirm if we have a team or not. The tournament is in Morgantown, WV. We will probably need to leave Friday evening. They are having a social Friday night, and Saturday's social will have 2 - 150 lb pigs, 7 kegs, and a liquor bar. There will also be a shuttle running from the social to downtown all night. 24 teams total will be enter with qualifier, social, and women's brackets.

Mon River has offered a couple places up for people to stay at so the sooner you can confirm the more likely it is I can lock up a place for people.

There is a Fundraising event in Dahlgren that we can participate in if we get
enough volunteers. It's on the 4th of July from 5pm to 9:30pm (on the base in
Dahlgren, I believe; more details later).

We can set up a food booth at a very large event that the base has. They
provide us with a table and chairs, and we provide some food and drinks that are
competitively priced (along with the grill or whatever to cook the food).

The organizer of the event said that last year they had about 10,000 people
come, so we should be able to make some serious money off of this. She also
suggested bringing a canopy or tent to at least cover the tables. Anything we
make is ours to keep.

We need to have about 10 volunteers so that nobody has to work the entire time.
We could probably get away with as few as 6, but 10 or 12 would be ideal.

One person will have to attend a food safety course on June 29th. I believe it
runs from 1PM-9PM? I'll have to double check the time on that.

Right now we're looking into cooking hamburgers, hot dogs, and fresh cut fries.
Along with serving some drinks. I'll be gone on the 29th, so someone else will
need to go to the food safety course, but I'll be glad to organize most
everything else.

It's a 4th of July celebration, so I'm sure there will be fireworks, etc.
Please email me or respond to the message board post if you can volunteer.
Thanks.

I'll be out of town, but you can use my tent. Remind me before I leave that weekend and I'll drop it off.

Guys,
The guys from Frederick RFC have asked us if we wanted
to come down and play a 15s motely match with them on
Saturday June 17th. This event will be at the Potomac
Celtic Festival in Leesburg, VA (about 2 1/2 hours)
which draws around 10,000 people.

Frederick has come to the 7's tournament for the last
4 or 5 years, so this would be a nice thing to do.
Even if it only 10 guys, we would still mix in with
them to play an 80 minute match.

Let me know if you are interested and can go.

After talking it over with the over officers, the club will even pay for one of
you to get certified, assuming you paid your dues, and you pass the course, that
is. No rewards for failure around here! :) If you're interested, let me know,

Hello All,

As you may have noticed, the weather does not look to be favorable this
weekend for sports activities.

Thus, The FSPA has canceled all play on all of its fields for Friday, April 21,
2006. and Saturday, April 22, 2006. As for Sunday, April 23, 2006 the ruling
will be that if it is raining (AT ALL) there will be no play on any fields
operated by the FSPA. If it is not raining and there is standing water in the
field area, that field will be considered off line due to weather. For those
organization scheduled to play Friday or Saturday, you will be credited a rain
date to your sch. If the no play rule occurs on Sunday due to weather, please
e-mail me at tgordon@... on Monday confirming that your org. did not use
their allotted field time and you will be also credited a rain date.

We just got the word today that Mon River is cancelling on us for this weekend.
Instead, we'll be having another practice to make sure you don't get too fat and
lazy over the weekend. There may or may not be a social afterwards. You'll
just have to show up to practice to find out.

The practice will start promptly at 12:00PM, so be there by 11:30 at the latest.
The practice will be at our game pitch, the Falmouth Waterfront Park.
Directions are here:
http://www.fredrugby.com/homedirections.html

Sorry for the late news, but I'll see you at practice tomorrow anyway.

Team.

I have to pull out of the tournament this weekend due to a death in the family. I will pay for my portion of the van, room, etc.. I feel terrible about doing this and would feel even worse if you guys had to pay for me not being there. I am sorry but I need to take care of my wife and family this weekend.

Just a reminder to everyone that tonight is the Mardi Gras Fundraising Party. We can use all the help we can get, volunteers of course. People had mentioned to Joey that they would volunteer, but now that has been handed off to Kool-Aid so i'm not sure who all has volunteered and if he has you written down. The party is supposed to start around 8:00 and run until 2:00, obviously not everyone will keep those hours. It would be great if we could get people to show up at 7:00 to help set-up and make sure things are ready to go on time. I'll be there a little earlier to help with the DJ. Hope to see everyone there.

Thanks,

Okay, the bar crawl is on for Saturday. The agenda is below in case you can't make it and want to meet up with us out at one of the locations. I've also attached a document with directions from each location to the next and a nice little map. Again the plan is to wear something having to do with rugby (jersey, t-shirt, hat) - I'm sure Joey can bring extra t-shirts and jerseys for sale to Covington's. This is an opportunity for the newer players and the women's team to meet the older players and hopefully recruit for both teams, not to mention potential sponsorships. I am going to the bars today after work to try to work out any deals, at least cover charges. Here's the agenda:

1. Covington's - 1315 Princess Anne St. (7:00-8:00)
2. The Loft - 1005 Princess Anne St. (8:10-9:00)
3. Sammy T's - 801 Caroline St. (9:10-9:55)
4. J. Brians - 200 Hanover St. (10:00 - 10:50)
5. Spirits - 816 Caroline St. (10:55 - 11:55)
6. Fatty J's - 106 George St. (12:00 - Close)

If you don't know where any of them are at meet us at Covington's and just follow along. I'll have my phone 540-421-9640 if you want to join up later and aren't sure if we are still at a location. See you Saturday.

Don't forgot about the Recruitment Social at Covington's tonight. FREE BEER!

I don't know how long it will be available from www.news.bbc.co.uk, but
4 February Level 1 & 2 classes will run roughly 9am to 5pm.
5 February Level 2 class will run roughly 10am to 2pm [so everyone can watch
that other game where the refs blow the whistle just because a man has been
tackled].

ADDED: Introducing Officiating will be held on 4 February at 9am.
ADDED: Officiating Non-Contact Rugby will be held on 4 February, imeediately
following [should be done by lunchtime on Saturday]

Referee Level 1 (along with Touch Judge Level 1) will be held
on 4 February [one day]. THIS IS REQUIRED FOR ANYONE REFREEING CONTACT
RUGBY.
Referee Level 2 (along with Tough Judge Levels 2 & 3) will be
held on 4 & 5 February [1.5 days] THIS IS REQUIRED FOR C1 REFEREES AND
ANYONE HOPING TO BECOME ONE.

Certification at Level 1 is REQUIRED for anyone refereeing
assigned rugby matches in the USA [THIS INCLUDES CONTACT U19 MATCHES].
Referee Level 1 and TJ Level 1 are prerequisites for taking the Level 2
courses. It is not possible to take both Referee courses in the same
weekend.

All sessions on 4 February will be at Loyola University,
Timonium, MD (just north of Baltimore).
The 5 February session of Referee Level 2 will be at Loyola
University's campus in Baltimore.
Directions will be provided to all registrants.

Costs:
Introducing Officiating = $25*
Officiating Non-Contact Rugby = free
Referee 1 ($75) + TJ 1 ($20) = $95*
Referee 2 ($100) + TJ 2/3 ($30) = $130*
*Any member of the Potomac Society of Rugby Football Referees
who has already refereed two assigned, billable games, will
have their fees covered by the Society. Anyone who referees
two assigned, billable games for the Potomac Society after
taking the course(s) will have all of their course fees and
Referee and Law fees reimbursed. Anyone who referees two non-contact games
will have their fees reimbursed for Introducing Officiating.

The courses are sponsored by the Potomac Society of Rugby
Football Referees and are open to all CIPP'ed members of the
rugby community. However, all fees go to USA Rugby. CIPP may
be paid online at register.usarugby.org. Anyone wishing to be certified
(that means taking the Level 1 test)
must also pay the Referee & Law fee of $25. The Society pays
this fee annually for all of its members. Anyone else may pay
it online at register.usarugby.org. R&L fee is not required of those just
taking
Introducing Officiating and overseeing non-contact matches.

To register or obtain further information, contact Mark
Handel, tigg@..., 202-363-0349, IMMEDIATELY. We're
sorry about getting this announcement out late, but need to
get a head count quickly. When sending email to register, it
would help if you include your CIPP number.

Anyone interested in refereeing Under-19 (high school) games
in the Spring, please contact Kevin Fraser,
kevin@..., and plan on attending a meeting in
Laurel on Wednesday, 8 February, in Laurel, MD.

Introducing Refereeing is a brief course for those ready to start
officiating.
For those not planning to take the Level 1 course, but who will be covering
non-contact rugby, this is a good start. It may be taken by anyone with
interest
in the game and just prior to taking the Level 1 Course. (Those with
extensive rugby experience need not take it prior to Level 1.)

The Referee Level 1 Course is the basic referees course. It
covers the referee's priorities, provides an introduction to
the Laws of the game, examines scrums, rucks, mauls, tackles,
line-outs, offsides and advantage with focus on the critical
aspects of the game and how to referee them. The course does
not go through the Laws page by page. That is left for the
student to do with the take home test.

The Referee Level 2 Course is a more advance officiating course for
those aiming for the C1 level and higher, who will be doing faster,
difficult games. However, it is open to anyone who has taken and
passed Level 1.
The Potomac Referees and the Mid-Atlantic Referees are looking to create a
group of dedicated Touch Judges (TJ).

Those who do well in local matches will be assigned to cover Rugby Super
League matches and Territorial play-off matches. Travel expenses are
covered to assigned matches.

To participate as an assigned TJ, it is necessary to take the TJ courses
that we are offering in the Baltimore area on Saturday, 4 February. It is
also useful to take the Referee Level 1 course, even if you won't carry a
whistle. Course fees for those who take at least two assignments will be
reimbursed.

We need to start getting a head count of
people interested in going to Savannah. As you can see the other teams are
thinking of ordering special touring Jerseys (a tradition of these teams).
Although this may add to the cost of the trip, they usually turn out to be
pretty cool jerseys and nice momentos of your trip. Pricing hasn't been figured
out yet, but right now are options are to join with these guys as we aren't sure
we will have enough for a full side of our own. Let me know if you are
interested so I can give them an idea of how many we will have. Additionally to
those they have listed 3 others have confirmed from that team and 6 from Mon
River. Don't worry about there being too many players, you can always whore in
a game and generally after a night on River street you don't feel like playing a
whole game anyways.

We need to start getting a head count of people interested in going to Savannah. As you can see the other teams are thinking of ordering special touring Jerseys (a tradition of these teams). Although this may add to the cost of the trip, they usually turn out to be pretty cool jerseys and nice momentos of your trip. Pricing hasn't been figured out yet, but right now are options are to join with these guys as we aren't sure we will have enough for a full side of our own. Let me know if you are interested so I can give them an idea of how many we will have. Additionally to those they have listed 3 others have confirmed from that team and 6 from Mon River. Don't worry about there being too many players, you can always whore in a game and generally after a night on River street you don't feel like playing a whole game anyways.
