'Twas the night before Pitt....
"Twas the night before P ittsburgh , when all through my mind, Were visions of couch burnings, both yours and mine. Firemen were resting and acting quite lazy, But they knew that things were about to get crazy.
The players were nestled, Markell did his dreds, While visions of bourbon Street danced in their heads. There were Quinton's gold teeth, Larry's son in his lap, While the quarterback made noises to sound like a cat.
When down in the endzone there arose such a noise, They sprang from their homes and called all their boys. To the field they flew, as fast as Devine, Making sure to pick up the offensive line.
The invaders had arrived at the stadium early, These panthers were looking noticeably surly. There was a point to this late-night trip through the hills, They were out on the field doing defensive drills.
With a dapper old coach who combed his mustache, You knew in a moment it must be Wannstedt. He'd made his name as a defensive master, And he whistled and shouted for them to run faster!
"Watch Slaton! Watch Schmitt! Watch Reynaud and White! Watch option! Watch bubble! Could be a rough night! Let's stand on the goal line and build a big wall, And keep them from their shot to play for it all!"
As they began to believe his bold rally cry, There was a flash and a pop up high in the sky They reacted the same, with a quick double take, What they saw made them stop in their cleats and quake.
On top of the stadium a man made his stand, As he calmly adjusted his Nike wristbands. He said "My name's Rich, as you surely know," Then he ran down the bleachers with Mountaineers in tow.
They were dressed all in gold, from their heads to their feet, And they looked like they'd win a 12-team track meet. A bundle of plays he had in his book, And there was no mistaking that confident look.
Pitt's eyes, how they widened! Their hearts, how they pounded! All for the biggest game since this brawl was founded. One side had momentum, the other desperation, This battle wouldn't wait for the eyes of the nation!
Caridi was roused from a much-needed sleep, So were Hickman and Hertzel, the last with a bleep. They brought their pens, paper and elaborate prose, To witness this battle of bitter old foes.
It was dark and cold, your breath you could see, But that didn't stop the kickoff of Pat McAfee. The tackle, of course came from an old Hawk named Emery, And so started this game that would soon be a memory.
They spoke so few words as they went to work, But score after score drove the visitors berserk. The Mountaineers rolled, as was expected, While the Panthers backed off, clearly dejected.
There was a Gatorade shower that gave poor Rich shivers, While no one seemed happier than one Vaughn Rivers. They exclaimed after singing about Almost Heaven, "We'll see you in New Orleans on January 7."

Just wanted to see if anyone else has an interest in going to Pax River this weekend to play a little rugby. We will be joining with my old team from WV. Let me know if you are interested.
I just wanted to thank everyone that was able to make it to the banquet on Saturday. Overall I think everyone had a good time especially at the after party at Blarney Stone (some more than others). The superlative winners are listed below:
Thank you to everyone that responded. The banquet is still on for Saturday at Brock's and we have 28 people confirmed. We will be starting at 5:30 with some socializing and cocktails. Please see below for the choices you will have for dinner.
I have also attached the list of people I have confirmed for attending and the number they have coming. Please review this information and let me know asap if anything has changed.
Food Choices:
TOP SIRLOIN STEAK Hand carved Black Angus center cut top sirloin finished with red wine demi-glace.
BLACKENED CHICKEN ALFREDO Spicy blackened chicken breast grilled and served over penne pasta tossed in Santa Fe alfredo sauce, topped with pico de gallo and parmesan cheese.
TROUT ALMONDINE Fresh Idaho Rainbow trout broiled and finished with toasted almondine cream sauce.
Joey went to count the votes for the superlatives and there were not many submitted, because of this we will ask everyone to submit their responses to me and I will provide the count with one or more of the officers confirming (I will print out all responses and can remove names to keep anonymous for the count). Please do not reply to the fredrugby group just me individually at wvugun@.... The superlatives are listed below:
Team MVP
Back MVP
Pack MVP
Club Man of the Year
Social Player of the Year (Most Drunk)
I'm sure someone will let me know if I forgot something or have too many, but place a vote for these and I will update accordingly.
Just wanted to let everyone know there will be a general intersest/recruiting meeting on 1/31 at Bogey's at 7:30. The purpose of these meetings is to draw out new recruits (which should be one of our highest priorities) and allow them to get a little more information about the team, meet players, and allows some of us to start thinking about playing again. I'm sure most people haven't even thought of running already to get in shape for the next season!
If you aren't doing anything come out for a beer or something to eat so any possilble new players get to see the social aspect of our great sport. I've attached a flyer (pretty basic) if anyone wants to hang up at ideal locations they may know of. Pete has already volunteered to hit major stops he knows of on Rte 3. I'm sure Tony will be kind enough to hit some downtown joints, but if anyone else has a connection somewhere see if they will let us put up a flier.
My plan is to have two more of these (possibly 2/21 and 3/7) before practice starts. I would also like to have a bar crawl the beginning of March if anyone wants to volunteer to take the lead. Any questions let me know.

My friend, Liz King, is playing at Buffalo Wild Wings on Saturday night from 9:30 to 1:00. She is in an 80's cover band called Members Only. She used to play rugby for Mary Wash and now plays for NOVA. If anyone is bored and needs something to do Saturday night, I highly suggest coming out to support her. It will definitely be a good time.
Based on the little responses I have received the banquet will be February 3rd not January 27. Most of the responses could not make the previous date. Please let me know if you have conflicts with this date. I will also need to know who will be attending and how many people. More details will follow as the date gets closer.
Thank you,

I just wanted to provide an update on the year end banquet. Obviously we are not having it this weekend, however, we are still going to have one. As of right now it will be 1/27 (last Saturday in January), unless this conflicts with too many peoples already established plans. In order to finalize the plans I need to know who plans on attending the banquet and if you will be bringing a guest(s).
You can respond to me individually at wvugun@hotmail.com to let me know your status. If it is determined that low numbers are expected we may try to reschedule for the next weekend.
Please forward this to those members you know are not on the yahoo lists.

[Registration info below]
I have received confirmation from USA Rugby that we will be hosting a
coaching clinic on Saturday/Sunday January 27-28, 2007. The clinic will be
at Gonzaga HS in Washington, DC. It will run from about 9-4 each day.
There are two workshops/clinics. Each workshop requires both Saturday and
Sunday attendance, so you will not be able to take part in both. (As to
missing either the first or second day, that's an issue you'll have to take
up with USA Rugby.) You may choose either the "Introduction to Rugby"
workshop or the "Developing Rugby Skills" workshop. Both of these workshops
include classroom and field time. I know many of you need
coachingcertification, so please take this opportunity to get it. At
the conclusion
of each day's session, there will be a social gathering that includes the
clinic participants and instuctors (details TBD).
The clinic is open to coaches for any club, but the timing is ideal for high
school and youth coaches.
The following is an excerpt from this web link which you should read in its
entirely. You can get to this page by going to www.usarugby.org, -->
Playing the Game (top menu bar), --> Coaches, --> Coach Development Program
(CDP).
http://www.usarugby.org/playing/coaching/cdp.html
*Introducing Rugby* - This course is designed for the coach that spends most
of his time introducing the game to new players. It is ideal for high school
head coaches and college and club assistant coaches. The focus on the course
is being able to implement the fundamentals of the game to players that have
little or no experience. The certification requirements include attendance
at a workshop and completed competency assesment, Foundations of
CoachingRugby modules, NCSS PREPARE Sports Safety module and the
Introducing Rugby
modules.
*Developing Skills* - This certification is designed for the coach that is
focused on working with players with experience and wants to get their
players to play at a higher level. The course work is ideal for head coaches
and those that are involved in club and all-star play. There is an emphasis
on practice planning, developing game sense and skill development. The
certification requirements include attendance at a workshop and completed
competency assesment, Foundations of Coaching Rugby modules, NCSS PREPARE
Sports Safety module and the Developing Skills modules.
Remember, there are online modules that you should complete prior to the
workshop. You must pay for these online modules, and you must pay for the
workshop. Details about costs are at the link above. Assuming we meet
certain attendance criteria (which I am confident we can meet), you will
receive a refund of about $20.
Thanks, and hope to see you all at the coaching workshops.

UPDATE ON REGISTRATION
There is now a registration link for the January 27-28, 2007 coaching clinic.
You must have a coach's portal username and password. There is a
registration link on the front page of the coach's portal.
To get to the coach's portal, go to www.usarugby.org, click on "Playing the
Game" on the uppermost horizontal menu bar, then click on " Coaches" on the
first drop down menu, then "Coach's Portal" on the next drop down menu.
Remember, you must register with USA Rugby to take this course. It is being
sponsored by the Potomac Rugby Union, but it is a USA-managed clinic. There
are two online modules that you should complete before you come to the
clinic. Set aside a few hours to work through those modules. They are well
worth your time, and will make the clinic even more worthwhile.
If you are having any problems registering, or have any questions, please
contact me for assistance.

I recently just got this directive from the Potomac Rugby Union....be warned that this will be coming from the ARU as well....Be careful in your games....especially you guys coming up on your senior years in the Spring and Fall...
Upon further reading of the forwarded message, it appears to be something from Planet Rugby, not from the IRB. Therefore, this is not official notice, but I expect something official will be coming from the IRB in the near future.
To all Players and Coaches: IRB Directive on Stomping, Back Chat and Foul Language
Ladies and Gentlemen, please be advised of the latest directive to Referees from the IRB.
Eric and John, can you post to the EPRU and PRU list serves.
Thanks, CFS
Carl Schmitt MARFU Disciplinary Chair Director, MARFU
From Planet Rugby website: > >c. 10/31/2006 > >Following the meeting of top referees and their managers in Lensbury on >Tuesday, the International Rugby Board (IRB) has said that the referees have been instructed to stamp out stamping and back chat. This will start with Saturday's match between Wales and Australia in Cardiff. > > >The IRB's referees manager, Paddy O'Brien, said: "The area of >indiscriminate trampling was discussed at the meeting and referees have been informed to take strong action against the inappropriate use of feet on bodies." > >The player using his feet to get the ball must be going for the ball and >not simply put his feet on a player lying on the ground. It was felt that this was being refereed too leniently and, it would now be treated as a serious misdemeanour and referees would consider a red card from the start and work down from that. > >On the matter of back chat, O'Brien said: "The growing trend of players to >continually question and dispute decisions, taken by referees and touch judges was discussed. The decision was taken to implement a zero tolerance policy to curtail this growing trend. Referees will penalize teams through means such as free kicks, penalties and even yellow cards. This includes players attempting to influence decision making and appeals to touch judges." > >"The message has to be clear. Back chat and arguing with a match official >will not be tolerated, nor will any attempt to slow down the match through questioning the referee." > >"For example when a referee awards a free kick or penalty against a team it >must immediately retreat 10 meters." > >"As is customary, captains may request the referee to explain certain >decisions but not every one. Common sense should prevail and the referee will give explanation, if deemed fit, at the first opportunity when play has stopped, such as at a kick to touch or during an injury stoppage.
"Referees have also been instructed to take a harsh view of the use of foul >language and the sledging of players from the opposition. Again the referee will penalize teams if such standards of behavior are evident." > >O'Brien added: "The Game has a proud history of fair play and respect and >the IRB is determined that such characteristics are maintained. > >This policy is being communicated to all IRB member unions."
If anyone can help Cindy move, please get in touch with her. I'm going to try

Apologies for the late notice, but we will be holding our first selection trials and practice NEXT SUNDAY August 20 at 11 am at Gravelly.
The following weekend will be the MARFU selection trials at a venue to be decided, Sunday August 27.
This year, selection for the MARFU squad will be dependent on attendance and performance at the August 27 trials.
The National Team selectors have indicated that they will be treating the NASC event in Florida as the prime selection venue this year.
We are investigating the possibility of returning to the two team squad again this year, and have committed responses from 3 other Territorial Unions for a mini-competition.
We encourage you to try out for the PRU team. We guarantee that it will be a rewarding experience with some of the most up to date coaching materials and methods available.
Be prepared to be tested.
Kind Regards

Rugby officials defend Collins' call of nature
Associated Press Posted: 1 hour ago
CHRISTCHURCH, New Zealand (AP) - New Zealand rugby officials have defended All Blacks flanker Jerry Collins who was seen to urinate on the playing field prior to Saturday's Tri-Nations test against Australia.
Support your favorite team with official Tri Nations gear from the FOX Rugby Shop!
Television cameras and still photographers at Jade Stadium captured images of Collins kneeling and urinating on the playing field minutes before kickoff in the match, attended by more than 34,000 fans. Edited footage of the incident was played in national television bulletins on Sunday.
Questioned about Collins' action at a news conference in Christchurch on Sunday, All Blacks co-coach Steve Hansen said the incident was "unfortunate".
"If you're a male and you're about to play a test match and you're seconds away from kickoff and you get the urge to want to go to the toilet what do you do?" Hansen said. "Do you rush off and let the game start with 14 men or do you try to be as discreet as you can be and hope that cameramen use commonsense and don't go showing it to everyone on the screen.
"He did his best to hide it. It'd be really good if we didn't make a big issue of it. Most people who are caught short try to be as discreet as they possibly can. He was in that case," he said.
Hansen said he would speak to Collins about the incident, advising him to "get your ablutions done before you get out on the track."

Further important information.
{Reminder to youth coaches - if your youth team has games scheduled for July
29, consider rescheduling them to another day or to the evening so that you
will be free to attend this clinic. The clinic should be over by 4 pm
Saturday, though it does resume on Sunday.]
The cost of the coaching clinic is $145 if you register in the next two
weeks. Two weeks from now, which is two weeks away from the coaching
clinic, two things will happen. First, USA Rugby will review the number of
registrants and make a determination to cancel the clinic if there is not
enough, or keep registration open. If they keep registration open, the
normal procedure is to add $50 to the course fee, raising it to $195.
Obviously, you want to register now instead of later. Further, if the
clinic is held and you are a walk-in student, the course fee goes up to
$245. Again, you want to register early. If you qualify for reimbursement
from the PRU, you will only be eligible for at most the $145 early
registration fee.
It is highly recommended that you complete the online modules before
attending the workshop at Gonzaga. Not required, but recommended. However,
you will not receive your certification until the online modules and the
workshop have been completed. Further, the PRU will not reimburse you for
the cost of the workshop unless you complete the certification
requirements. You may also be eligible for the cost of the online modules,
but again, not until you have completed all of the certification
requirements.
Please sign up soon.

FYI for any interested in getting into coaching. Please pass on to anyone who
might be interested. Pete or Shaw, please pass this on to Jeff Kline just in
case he wants to go. I don't have his new email. I believe we said in the past
that we'd pay for (at least) one person to go get certified if it might benefit
the club. Looks like there's a possibility below for more reimbursements from
the PRU....

A reminder about the upcoming coaching clinic, now only a month away. But
there are only TWO WEEKS left to register. The clinic will not happen if we
do not get the minimum of 10 registrants per class. As of this time, we are
woefully short of that minimum, and I would fully expect to at least have 20
in each class. Should we get sufficient class attendance, the PRU will
rebate a portion of the cost of the clinic.
Besides the requirements to have a certified coach, it greatly behooves each
club to have one (or more) certified coaches - better game tactics, offense,
defense, skills, techniques, game plan, you name it. The PRU will cover
part of all of the cost of the coaching clinic (send an e-mail to me and
treasurer Jamie Jisa to ask about this) for college, HS/U19, and youth
clubs.
If you are having trouble registering, now is the time to ask.

Hopefully you made it home in one piece last weekend. Wanted to invite you guys up to our 10’s tournament on August 5th. Were taking the 1st 8 teams to enter since we have had a bunch of interest, but don’t want to pay union fees for over 8. It will be $200 to get in, so let me know if you guys want to put in a side.
I am guessing that practice was a washout tonight? Yes that is a question. Just forge my name on the thing since I probably won't be at practice on Thursday.
Thanks

Hey all,
I have to be at work a little late tonight, but I will be coming down to practice to pick up the signature sheet. I'll probably be there around 7:30-7:45ish.
See you guys later,

Jess will be attending the Food Safety course on Thursday, June 29th. (Thanks Jess!!!!) She needs to bring with her a form with all of the food handlers signatures (everyone listed above). I'll bring the form to practice today and have everyone sign it. When I get home from work, I'll scan the guidlines you need to read and email them out. I'll also print off a couple of copies to bring to practice.

Hello!
So far I know of the following who will be helping out on Tuesday, July 4th:
Jess, Chubby, Cooter, Maggie, Cisco, Heather, Pete (1st half), Joey, Ginny and
maybe Bridgett.
Email me if you can help out and your name is not above.
Jess will be attending the Food Safety course on Thursday, June 29th. (Thanks
Jess!!!!) She needs to bring with her a form with all of the food handlers
signatures (everyone listed above). I'll bring the form to practice today and
have everyone sign it. When I get home from work, I'll scan the guidlines you
need to read and email them out. I'll also print off a couple of copies to
bring to practice.
Thanks,
Ginny

I'll be out of town, but you can use my tent. Remind me before I leave that
weekend and I'll drop it off.

>There is a Fundraising event in Dahlgren that we can participate in if we get
enough volunteers. It's on the 4th of July from 5pm to 9:30pm (on the base in
Dahlgren, I believe; more details later).
>
>We can set up a food booth at a very large event that the base has. They
provide us with a table and chairs, and we provide some food and drinks that are
competitively priced (along with the grill or whatever to cook the food).
>
>The organizer of the event said that last year they had about 10,000 people
come, so we should be able to make some serious money off of this. She also
suggested bringing a canopy or tent to at least cover the tables. Anything we
make is ours to keep.
>
>We need to have about 10 volunteers so that nobody has to work the entire
time. We could probably get away with as few as 6, but 10 or 12 would be ideal.
>
>One person will have to attend a food safety course on June 29th. I believe
it runs from 1PM-9PM? I'll have to double check the time on that.

Here's an article that appeared in the Pittsburgh Tribune about Rugby. We might want to do another focusing on expanding rugby in the region --- with the women's team starting and the men's becoming active members of the PRU.
If anyone is interested in playing this weekend, please post, email, or call me 540-421-9640. I'll need to confirm if we have a team or not. The tournament is in Morgantown, WV. We will probably need to leave Friday evening. They are having a social Friday night, and Saturday's social will have 2 - 150 lb pigs, 7 kegs, and a liquor bar. There will also be a shuttle running from the social to downtown all night. 24 teams total will be enter with qualifier, social, and women's brackets.
Mon River has offered a couple places up for people to stay at so the sooner you can confirm the more likely it is I can lock up a place for people.
