Clark Lake Tri/Du was a lot of fun this past Sunday. We had the
neighborhood cheering for us and sprinklers to run through if we
wanted. Fastastic F.A.S.T. turnout. The following are some of the
F.A.S.T. members I saw:
Brandon Gutowski
Lana Krolikowski
Dawn Polk
Melissa Kelber
Jennifer Warstler
Amy Christena
Shane Brezee (who had just done Muncie the weekend before!)
Yoshiko Tischler
Ron Marvin
Brian Grant (Brian's 1st Tri – Way to go!)
Anne Marie Phillips
Susan Gutowski
Ken Gutowski
Neal Martindale (who had just done Muncie the weekend before!)
Dave Zaitchik
Peter Bowen
Jane Sanders
Ian Shearing
Cecilia Brzys
Bob Ranta
Rick Kelly (thanks for introducing yourself)
Shannon Harris (ditto)
If we missed you on this list please e-mail bike@...
& tris@.... Thanks!
Well, it's getting down to the last couple of weeks before the race and
all of the hard work is behind us, I'm sure that some people need help
planning those last training days and race execution.
I'll be at Island Lake on Saturday morning for my last long(er) ride
and can answer questions about training and the race if anyone is
interested. I plan on being on my bike by 9am, not a hard ride, just
moderate riding for 3.5 to 4 hours.
If you don't know who I am, just look for the short guy on the little
red bike, I'm easy to find.
If you can't make it on Saturday but have questions, email me directly.

What kind of team is it? Very competitive or just for fun?

Clark Lake is the last MERCRS race in the state of Michigan for the
2008 season. Let's get a fantastic F.A.S.T. turn out there! see
www.eliteendeavors.com for details. As Jaret always reminds us, the
Duathlon gets us MERCRS points too. A lot of people from the Tuesday
Night Brick are going. Registeration closes at 9 pm on Friday, July
18th. So jump on board! See you there!

Hi all,
Anyone with experience in masters swimming here in the Detroit
area
care to lend me some advice? I'd like to get involved in masters
swimming. I'm trying to figure out exactly what I need to do in
order
to participate in a few masters swim meets. The websites I've
visited
have confused me. What's the minimum I need to do in order to be
eligible to swim in masters meets? Just a USMS membership? I'd
love
to join a training group like FAST too, but it seems I would
need to
join a second gym in order to swim regularly. I'm already a
member at
the Farmington Hills YMCA and swim/run there on my lunch breaks
to
train for XTERRA tri's, so I'd like to avoid joining a second
gym. I
live in the Plymouth/Canton area and had my eye on the LALA
group, but
it's around $50/session. All this isn't much on it's own, but
the
sports budget is already pretty strained trying to keep up with
clothing, equipment, race entry fees, etc. I don't want to join
a
bunch of unnecessary clubs just to swim a few meets, but maybe
that's
how it works...
Thanks in advance for your help!

You need to be a member of USMS, which I think costs $30 per year, to
swim in some masters meets. But, there are some masters meets in the
area where you do not need to be a USMS member to swim in the meet.
If you look at this list at this link:
http://www.michiganmasters.com/Meet_Sched.htm
you will see some meets listed as recognized and others as
sanctioned. I think the ones listed as recognized do not require
USMS membership, but the ones listed as sanctioned do. So, you don't
really need USMS membership if you just one to swim a couple meets a
year.
Becoming a USMS member simply involves filling out the paperwork at
this link: http://www.michiganmasters.com/Registration/2008.reg.pdf
and sending in the check. You can probably do it online as this
link:
https://www.clubassistant.com/club/usms.cfm
All of the swim meets have entry fees, but they are fairly modest,
especially compared with marathon or longer triathlons.
There is supposed to be a masters group that has practices at the
Farmington Hills YMCA, and the only requirements are YMCA and USMS
membership, but its practice times are not convenient for my life so
I've never been at the YMCA when they are supposed to be practicing.
Jenny and Noah, who are both FAST members, would probably be your
best source of information about that group.
I have heard there are a number of triathletes swim at the YMCA
before work if you are looking for someone to swim with. I sometimes
see other reasonably competent swimmers when I swim at the Y, but all
I really need is a lane where no one else will get in my way so I
have not tried to match my swims with anything except avoiding the
kids swim team practices.
Hi Jason,
A current USMS card is bacially the only requirement for all
sanctioned swim meets in Michigan. If you looking for a swim
training group several of our members train out of the Farmington Y,
check out the Masters bulletin board on the south wall of the pool.
We also have several members who swim at the Livonia Y if you would
like to join in on some of their swims. FAST has a $5 pay at the door
policy for our swims at Schoolcraft which wil resume in September. I
also swim with LALA during the school year and it is a pretty good
deal if you are interested in evening swims (breaks down to about
$2.25 per swim).
If you need more information you can e-mail me directly at
swim@....

Hey team!
I am a member of the Detroit Grand Prix Association, and this year we are
gearing up for an amazing race!
The Detroit Grand Prix is an Indy Car Series race being held at Belle Isle
August 29th - 31st. My second passion, aside from racing bodies - is racing
cars!
Amazingly it takes *1,200* volunteers to make the race festivities run
smoothly. We have 900 so far, but are desperately needing 300 more.
If you are interested in volunteering, please help out! This is a great
experience that you will not soon forget. By the way - ALL proceeds from
this race go to help preserve Belle Isle, a place we race and train! Talk
about giving back!
We need volunteers for the following areas:
Ushers
Food Services
Customer Relations
Shuttle Guides
Information
Ticket Takers
Transportation.Delivery Services
Circuit Marshalls
To sign up to volunteer, please go to www.detroitgp.com and mention me as
your referral (Jennifer Warstler) . You can also request a paper
application by calling the Grand Prix office at 313-262-1805.

There's a great resource for MTB trails at mmba.org. In Novi, you
have an excellent trail system at Lakeshore park (aka Tree Farm).
There's plenty of advanced obstacles, but they all feature a way
around them for beginners.

Brian,
I attached the Island Lake map.
We will swim in Trout Lake.
Bike on the main park road, starting out headed West, turning left at the toll
booth (ie. do not exit the park) (also watch the stop signs in this area).
Continue past Spring Mill Pond. Continue straight past the rail road tracks,
and turn around in the parking lot to the East of Island Lake. And return back
the same way you came. For extra miles you can continue past the parking lot to
the parking lot turn around at the East end of Kent Lake.
Run: Exit the parking lot on the trail at the North side of the parking lot.
Head West on the black top trail. We will try to have miles marked.

Details are yet to be nailed down, but all distances will be optional/flexible.
This is what we have:
Meet at 1st parking lot on your left after entering the Island Lake State Rec.
Area, and proceeding straight ahead after the toll booth.
Date/start time: Sat. 7/19/08, start swim between 8am and 9am
Swim: Trout Lake
Bike: Island Lake State Rec. Area roads (roads will not be closed to cars, obey
all STOP signs and other traffic signs!)
Run: Island Lake State Rec. Area paths
This is an informal event. We will all swim, bike, and run at our own risk. We
will use the buddy system in the water.
If you will be participating, please e-mail me at pres@swifasttrifast .com

Looks like we have about a dozen club members heading for Lake
Placid
next week. For anyone that is there Friday morning (should be
about
everyone), at least a couple of us will be checking out the swim
course
with an 8:00 AM swim. Join us if you can. If a group shows up
I'll
make sure I have a camera for photos.
Race numbers are assigned, by the way.

Hello All,
Since I didn't get to see many of you at the brick this week, I was
wondering if any of you were doing Waterloo this weekend. I was planning to
go and take pictures and cheer, so I wanted to see who all might be racing
so I can make sure to be on the look out for my fellow FAST members.
Hope you all have awesome weekends!

I am excited about the results of our F.A.S.T. poll on a destination
IM 70.3 for 2009. Timberman in Gilford, New Hampshire (the second
weekend of August) is the definite winner followed by Muskoka, Canada
(the second weekend of September). Both races sold out and Muskoka
sold out very quickly because I think they truly limited the number
of participants.
So, I'm going to keep my eyes on when 2009 registration opens for
these two races and let everybody know. I will also look into
hotels. As always do what works best for you, but I will put
information out there that you can jump on board if you like or do
your own thing. For me personally, I'm definitely going to do
Timberman. I might also do Muskoka depending on what the actual date
of the event is and how it fits in to my schedule:)
Very Excited!
Amy Christena
2008 F.A.S.T. VP of Triathlons
Here are the results of my poll regarding having a F.A.S.T.
Club "goal" Ironman for 2009. The idea is F.A.S.T. members would
have plenty of training partners and a lot of camaraderie when
training for the same event. Plus possibly people to share travel
expenses with.
A few people have made their decision and know exactly which IM they
are going to try to get into and a few people are willing to select
an IM amongst a few top choices.
The long and the short of it is there is an equal number interested
in Canada and Lake Placid with Wisconsin being the next choice. The
major uncertainty is getting into Canada. Jaret Johnson is going to
drive to Lake Placid to register on-site to get his slot at LP.
IM Canada had quite a few people interested but only 1 or 2 can get
in for sure having community slots. Apparently, there is no on-line
registration for Canada because it is so popular. To show-up on-site
is a challenge because it requires a flight to the closest city and
then a 2-3 hour drive. Jon Logan tells me there is a lottery for
Canada and he and Sandy are going to put their names in. Also,
getting in by community slot, although expensive, might be more
affordable than showing up on-site.
We had two comments of "anything but Louisville" because of concern
for the heat. And we had one comment of "anything driving distance"
because it is a bit of a hassle to fly a bike.
The following are the results:
Wisconsin
Jody Wolak (fairly certain)
Jackie Roehl (fairly certain)
Jane Sanders (maybe)
CDA
Jim Austin (already registered)
Lake Placid
Darrin Bartlett (fairly certain)
Jaret Johnson (fairly certain)
Devon Kennedy (I heard through the grapevine.)
Jane Sanders (maybe)
Canada
Dave Kurt (maybe, but his 1st choice)

Basically, I don't think I can declare one IM the definite winner for
2009. But you can review the results and make a decision that is
best for you.
Enjoy!

Looks like we have about a dozen club members heading for Lake Placid
next week. For anyone that is there Friday morning (should be about
everyone), at least a couple of us will be checking out the swim course
with an 8:00 AM swim. Join us if you can. If a group shows up I'll
make sure I have a camera for photos.
Race numbers are assigned, by the way.
Go FAST!

I thought I would forward this since I like Endurox R4 and thought others
might. I haven't confirmed that this is a good deal, but I bet it is.
