Hey everyone.  I really need to know if you are going to come to a volunteer meeting Sunday or not.  I would like to plan where we can have it and it may be to late to reserve a table at the bee now.  Please let me know, Sheri

Hey there.  We keep missing each other don't we. <grin>  I will put together a presentation you can take to your friend.  I will have printed pictures of the arena and breezeway along with a short description of what we need done. We can name the arena after anyone he chooses if he would like to sponsor the renovation.  When can you come get the folder or do you need me to mail it to you? Sheri

I need to get with you to see what sort of fundraising literature you have available to give out to potential donors/sponsors.  If you don't have anything prepared yet, I was thinking we could make either a brochure type pamphlet,  or (for potentially bigger donors) a folder with individual sheets with information about sponsoring kids, horses or other stuff at the barn.

Anyway, I'm sorry I can't make it this Sunday, but please let me know what goes on at the meeting.  Also, please try to round up a list of what is needed around the barn, and the pictures of the arena where repairs are needed.  Our next car club meeting is at Buggs' house (he's the one who owns the sheetmetal company) on the 17th, and I'd like to have a nice little presentation ready to show him about the farm.

Hi all. We are cancelling all sessions tomorrow. While we were
working on the arena to fix some wet spots, we accidentally uncovered
some old rebar. It is about thirty feet of the stuff and it is
sticking up in the arena. We took about twenty feet out so far, but
have to pull the rest up still. It is unsafe to use the arena.
Volunteers are still welcome to come out. We will be doing barn
maintance etc... Probably will work one of the mini's with the
harness, depends on weather and the arena. Sorry for the trouble and
we will make up all sessions during the next couple of weeks if
possible. Sheri

In dealing with specifics in the non-physical disabilities, the
autistic rider will exhibit varying degrees of behaviors which can
present an equal number of special situations.

As self-absorption and repetitive behaviors are characteristic, and
are most often accompanied by profound communication disorders, it
is of utmost improtance to gain and keep the rider's attention.
Lessons need to be interesting with good, stimulating and rhythmic
activity. Autistic children can "enter into another world" quickly
after mounting so it is important to begin the lesson quickly. They
should always take a lap or two with nothing but light conversation
at the beginning of the lesson.
Warm up exercises can be done with a ball or ring, but be aware
that the rider needs to take small steps towards this, as they
resist change. If they will hold the ball at first, that is
enough. Just teach them hold and then hand back to you and the
other sidewalker, using short clear instructions. Don't ask for too
much too fast. When teaching them to stretch, demonstrate it first
and have them copy you. Some riders with autism can be violent. Be
aware they may throw the ball with intent to hit you or your horse.
Autistic children will do this if they feel frustrated and can't
communicate it. Warm up in the beginning can be as simple as
stretching there hands forward, to the side, and back wards toward
your hands.
Always try to maintain or get eye contact while you are
communicating with the rider. How fast you go through the steps of
warm up exercises, then the lesson, and games will depend on the
severity of autism. High functioning autistic children can learn to
be independent riders. Always remember that you should develop a
routine in your session and stick with it. Add new elements slowly.
Please, remember...we discourage stemming. We teach the children
quite hands, no screaming, etc.. (stemming is self stimulation)

CHARACTRISTICS OF AUTISM
1. little, garbled, or no speech
2. short attention span
3. self-abusive or abusive to others (not all)
4. withdrawn
5. repetitive or meaningless movements (stemming)

Talk to you guys later, Sheri

Thanks Sherri for letting us know how many people RSVP'd.  I appreciate it.  Since there are approximately 12 people attending, I will probably bring a small veggie or fruit plate and caffeine free beverages.

See you guys then.

Hey guys,

A couple of notes here.  First, when answering the posts in this
message board, please just reply to the message. Don't send the
message to my personal emails, just send it to the group in a
reply.

Next, Sunday night at 7:30 pm we are having a volunteer meeting at
my church here in Santa Fe.  We cannot have one in the office this
week due to the nasty conditions here and the fact that I have a
huge toning table in the waiting room. Which we need to sell by the
way. (grin)  The meeting is being held at Arcadia Christian Church's
fellowship hall.  It is very nice and we will have the kitchen.
Bring appetizer type foods. ( dips and chips, vegi dips, pizza
rolls, tortilla roll ups, things of that nature).  If you go to
www.arcadiachristianchurch.org you can scroll down to get directions
and it will tell you how to get there.  If you like I can post the
directions here.  The church is only 7 minutes from the center.

Please, everyone RSVP to the list and let us know if you are
coming.  You are welcome to bring spouses, dates, or potential
volunteers to this meeting.  We are going to discuss, emergency
procedures, hand out volunteer manuals, and delve into fundraising.
This is a very important meeting so please come. Any parents who are
interested are also welcome, please no children under 12.

Thanks, Sheri

This came to me from Sheryl Sultenfuss, one of the gals who takes care of the horses on Sunday mornings. It would never have occurred to me that a mule would do this.

"These pics came from a guy in AZ. Yes, the mule killed the mountain lion.  The lion had been stalking them for the better part of the morning, on the way out to a hunt. They were pretty sure it was after one of the dogs.  The cat ambushed them, and the mule pictured tossed its rider and went into attack (defense) mode, the horses scattered and shots were fired but no one was sure if they hit the cat or not.   Unfortunately, it wasn't until it was almost over that one of the guys started snapping pics.  The mule finally stomped the cougar to death after biting and throwing it around like a rag doll.  The dogs wouldn't even come close until the mule settled down.

[]

The cat was still alive here and trying to fight back

 []

The mule stomped the cat then pinned it to the ground and bit the heck

out of the dead cat several more times.

  []

The cat was pretty much dead by now then mule picked up the cat again whipped it

into the air again then stomped the dead cat again for good measure!

  []

Note the dog audience.... Gives new meaning to the term  "BAD ASS"

I will be there on Sunday...I am not sure Chris will be with me, though.  What is everyone bringing to eat?  I just want to make sure I don't bring the same thing.

Hi guys. Just a reminder about the Astroworld charity get together
this Friday. I still have tickets for $19.99. Remember that Flying
Free keeps $5 from every ticket. I must have the total tickets by
tomorrow night. I have to turn in money and tickets on Wednesday.
If you want tickets tell me immediately please. I was hoping a
large group of us to go. It will be fun. All tickets come with a
free ticket to Splashtown (if you go Friday) Sheri

Hi everyone. Well we are still going to try to have sessions
tomorrow. It is incredibly wet. There are two large water puddles
in the arena from it blowing in. The barn aisle is still wet, but
no standing water. Four stalls in the barn had some water (thanks
to me forgetting to close the windows, sigh) I don't want to cancel
though. We are going to try to disk the arena early in the morning
or later tonight. If some of you guys could get here by 8 am
tomorrow morning that would be great. The first session starts at 9
am and it is a new student. They will have basic orientation but
they will also ride for about 15 minutes. Jamie, Myron and I need
help getting the place half way presentable. I know we can't do
anything about the water, but we can at least try to make it
cleaner.

If anyone can come early, email the list and let me know, Sheri

Well things are really wet out here today. The wind blew the
shingles off out kitchen roof and it was raining for a time in the
house. Myron came home and fixed the roof. Then I went out to the
barn. We had a large branch off the tree beside the barn, caused no
damage. The front doors blew open so there is about an inch of
water standing in the aise. The arena and breezeway are soaked.
You could say we had a bad morning. But, we shall survive.

I am glad you guys joined the group. I will be getting the emails
of all the clients and volunteers and inviting them to join in the
next couple of days. You are welcome to invite anyone who has an
interest in Flying Free to join up.

I ask for you guys to pray about the funding situation. With all
this bad weather we have been having the last few months, our bank
balance is below what we owe. We need to come up with $1,000 by
March. I know this is a tall request, but I know it can be done.
If you know anyone who would be interested in sponsoring one of our
kids, a horse, or make a donation, let me know. Child sponsorship
is $120 a month, a horse is $100.

I hope to make this group an avenue that can be used so everyone
feels a part of this organization. I will post funding needs,
therapeutic riding topics, upcoming dates, etc.

Talk to you later

Sheri
