Ok, so for all you adventure racers out there you've got the World
Championships hitting our shores in little over a weeks time, and for the
fell enthusiasts the World Long Distance Mountain Running championships are
being incorporated in to the 2008 Three Peaks race. Plenty of our members
have already conquered the marathon and participation in endurance sports is
growing rapidly across GB, so what about the next step, what other
challenges lie on our shores? What about your challenge for '09?
Well, the BBC Sport website has today posted the following information which
represents potentially a huge step forward for endurance sport not just in
GB but worldwide, and you could be involved!! Dust off your training plans,
get your kit washed and ironed (clean kit, what's that!!) and get motivated.
Great Britain is to stage the first Commonwealth ultra-distance and mountain
running championships in 2009.
The event is the first step towards the sport's push to be included on the
athletics programme at the Commonwealth Games and the World Championships.
The four-event competition in Keswick will comprise a 100km road race, a
24-hour race and two mountain races.
"This is a big step towards being recognised at worldwide championships,"
Great Britain coach Norman Wilson said.
"The good news is Britain has a lot of talented athletes coming through."
The championships will be open to men and women from all 71 Commonwealth
nations.
If the event is a success it is hoped the sport will be included at the 2014
Commonwealth Games.
Happy training
Dave

All,
For anyone fancying something a little bit different, certainly interesting
but not too competitive this Wednesday (I know it's a club night!),
Wharfedale Harriers are putting on an event starting from Addingham. Not
sure of distance etc but all available information is listed below.
Cheers
Dave
Wharfedale Harriers Owl Event
Wed. Night 7.15pm Feb 21st 2007
Addingham near Ilkley
Open to anyone daft enough !
Runners or cyclists
Starting from the Crown pub, it's to the trig point of Beamsley Beacon and
back to the Crown by any route you choose to take. Bearing in mind it's
going to be dark, you will need some sort of illumination !
There will be no flags or way markers, just a marshal at the trig point.
This is to be a fun event, but has the obvious dangers of a night event, ie
darkness
There are no prizes, only the honour of a good position, as it's only fun.
A small contribution of £2.00 will go towards administration Costs.
Registration at village hall car park

Thanks for the info, Dave. Don't think I'm fit enough .... suspect you might still be hung over from your dad's wedding!! Hope you have fun. Look forward to hearing all about it. Chris Hodgson did really well in the Polaris one time. I seem to remember stories of him having to pee on the back wheel of his bike to defrost it on the Sunday morning .....
Just a quick bit of info about the Spring Polaris for anyone who fancies something different on the weekend of March 24th/25th. The event is based on the mountain marathon format of competing over 2 days, but takes place on mountain bikes instead of the usual bog trudge on foot.
The race start is anytime up to 10am on Saturday morning, and the first day is a 7 hour score format, and the Sunday is a 5 hour score format. You'll need to carry everything you need for the weekend including tent, cooking equipment, food and survival gear, and you can do it solo or in a pair. The exact venue for March's event hasn't been announced yet but it's broadly in the Scottish Borders, and definitely not Galloway or Kielder according to the website.
You can enter the race almost up until the event itself, but if you want to guarantee yourself a laminated map for the event you'll need to enter in the next week or two. Paper copies can be obtained but if you fancy fiddling about in Scottish weather with cold hands and a wet paper map you're made of sterner stuff than me!!
Riding is usually over a decent variety of terrain and this event is promising some fun, technical riding off the beaten track. It's the perfect warm down for anyone doing Edale Skyline the week before, and a good loosener for anyone aiming for the Northern Road Relays the week after so don't delay, get your entry in for a cracking weekend.
Oh, did I mention that the midway camp has beer for sale and a bonfire, what more can you ask for?

Many thanks for your club entry and thanks for all of
the hard work that you have put in organising the teams. We are well over our
self imposed limit of 60 teams (70 teams entered to date!) which may cause
problems with parking on race day especially at the 2nd changeover at Callis
Bridge. Please try to car share as much as possible, park responsibly in the
area and avoid this changeover as a spectator viewpoint.
We have increased the prize list to reflect the spread
of entries (first 3 teams in each of the cats, Open, Vets, Ladies and Mixed)
although no prize for the first B team as there are very few B teams entered.
Please note that for the first time this year that
there are (downloadable) individual written leg route descriptions on the relay
website which may assist your runners when out on a leg recce. These can be
found on the Route Description page on the Relay Website.
I am desperate to get back the Provisional teams
sheets from you as soon as possible so that I can enter the names on our
results database prior to race day. As soon as you have what you think is going
to be your team please send me the form back (in the envelope provided) any
minor changes can then be made on race day when you hand in your final team sheet
at registration. (700 names to be typed in with my typing skills doesn't bear
thinking about so please help by getting the Provisional team sheet back to me
asap).
Please ensure that all of your runners are fully
conversant with all of the rules especially with regard to kit which has to be
worn or carried. Given the time of year and the nature of the event we will be
doing kit checks and we will be strict (we disqualified one of our own teams
last year for a kit infringement!).
We hope that you enjoy your day out on the Mary
Towneley Loop, most of the information about the event can be found on the
relay website but if you have any queries or worries please contact me.
We now have 17 people subscribed to Yahoogroups and 21 who are still
thinking about it. To subscribe send a blank email to fellandale-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
or use the link in my original invite email.
Handicap results for this week from Dave below:
January
2007 Winter Handicap
Times
Finish Actual
1. Mark Saville 30.23 30.23
2. Phil Hancock 30.30 23.25
3. Dave Britton 30.36 22.01
4. Paul French 31.00 25.45
5. Steven Carter 31.06 25.31
6. Paul Glover 31.24 23.44
7. Dave Hickman 31.27 23.37
8. Carl Prendergast 31.33 23.53
9. Gary Burns 31.55 24.20
10. Richard Falls 33.19 23.34
A strong wind and generally poor conditions did not prevent Paul Glover
recording a faster time than last month when he won. However, the handicap
penalty pushed him back into 6th place. Phil Hancock turned in a
creditable performance on his first outing of the season – more to come
if he can find time to do some training. Congratulations to Mark on his win. I
seem to remember him saying he was out to win the January bottle of wine
because his wine stocks would be depleted after Christmas.
The 2007 ROTY calendar is up on the website www.fellandale.com. The Ben Nevis race is
filling up fast so get your skates on if you want to enter.
Club members who have joined our Yahoo group will get two emails (this
version and a posting via Yahoogroups). In a couple of weeks when everyone is
on the Yahoo list I’ll use that only for sending out general messages. It’s
therefore important that everyone joins the Yahoo group. Send an email to fellandale-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
To send a message from the Yahoogroups web page you must have a Yahoo
ID and password (you can sign up for free if you want to). However
you can simply post a message to fellandale@yahoogroups.com instead
without needing the ID and password.

This is by way of a test message. How do we send messages
to the group from the yahoogroups page. It
seems to ask for a id and pass word.
