Yeah, I remember the "STRO Show" people use to talk about when he took the
court..the excitement people had about his potential has seemed to wane since
the team has left Vancouver. just my feeling on it. maybe because Stro has more
years in the league. I feel as though he could do a lot more than he's doing now
in terms of numbers if he were given more of an opportunity.
Also, what does everyone think of the trade the Grizz pulled off today for
Wells...????

Yeah now it's just Stromile Swift. The Grizz have talked of
trading him or something, guess the management just wants newer
players, but I hope they don't anytime soon. The Vancouver connection
aside, "Stro" has as times over the last few years been the one who
kept the team together and more or less functioning. So injuries,
contract etc. notwithstanding hopefully he'll stay around a bit
longer.

As mentioned in the previous post, Michael Dickerson recently
retired. Sorry to see him go, he was one of the last two players
still around from the Vancouver days. But Dickerson was injured so
often the last couple of years, he didn't get to play much in
Memphis. Now it's just Stromile Swift, "Stro," the swift one, the
only Vancouver Grizz left currently on the team. Funny that Swift
isn't really old yet he's a veteran in that respect. Another
interesting Grizz is Wright, a Memphis native who also played college
ball there. Likely one of the few who's actually looked forward to
playing NBA ball in Memphis (and to get away from the Clippers).
Tonight the Grizz (5-4) play the Detroit Pistons. They take a 3-
game winning streak into the game, last season (or the season before
IIRC) they didn't even have 3 wins at this point...forget a streak
(except a losing one). Hubie Brown vs. Larry Brown. Darko Milicic vs.
the team that might have drafted him. Who will win? We shall see.

Yeah Sidney Lowe was a nice enough guy and all, a link with
Vancouver, but the losing just got to him. One year in with the
Grizz, Hubie Brown's at least got the team competitive-so far!
Another link with Vancouver that IMO isn't missed would be Stu
(pid, as many have called him) Jackson. The "continuity" with the
Vancouver Grizzlies that Jackson provides is having traded, way back
in 1997, the 2003 Grizz draft choice for...Otis Thorpe. OTIS
THORPE?! Come on, Thorpe was likely never worth that, certainly not
in 1997. General managers make mistakes, and some have been known to
have traded high draft choices for players (George Allen, anybody?),
but that was a brainless move...George Allen at least won most
games, Stu Jackson never did. Now Jackson is long gone, to a job in
the NBA front office, likely a glad-handing sort of position with
few real responsibilities. I sort of remember Jackson from when he
was here in NY, pleasant enough personality but no great basketball
knowledge.
Unfortunately for the Grizz, the "Thorpe" draft choice wound up
being not #1, which they could have kept under the rules. But it was
still high, #2, which meant it was worth something for the Detroit
Pistons (who got it). Fortunately for the Grizz, they're still
finding ways to win. Oh, and Dickerson just retired. The world moves
on...
Anthony
The Grizzlies recently picked up an early-season victory vs. one
of the particularly tough nemeses, the Los Angeles Lakers. No doubt
all the turmoil that surrounds the Lakers helped but in any case a
welcome win.
Still, the Grizz are only 3-4 in the current campaign. Not great
but on the other hand better than those long winless slides that
opened the last couple of seasons. The NBA schedule is a long one but
the Grizz will find (as did another favorite of mine, the Minnesota
Wild, last year in the NHL) that starting off right with some wins
tends to provide a cushion against the almost inevitable losing
streaks later on. At least it's not like the NFL, where the
Philadelphia Eagles had to start winning instantly to turn things
around after 2 losses.
Enjoyable to watch Hubie Brown back in the league, especially
when fellow "golden oldie" Larry Brown is with the other team (the
76ers, now the Pistons). We shall see what develops, maybe more posts
as things move along.

Subject: [Feast Land of the Grizzlies] Grizz Are Drafting Fourth, Plus A
Complaint
I'll get the complaint out of the way first. It seems spammers
have been making a major assault on yahoo clubs recently, not just
this one. These con artists have sent their unwanted files promoting
credit cards, pornography and so forth across the board. Apparently
much or most of this originates from the UK, not Canada or the US,
which IMO is somewhat surprising...I'd thought the British nation
above this sort of thing but there's a sleazy element everywhere.
Anyway, since Byrix and not me owns this list I can't delete the
files but I will be making complaints about this spam to (yahoo)
authorities.
Now, the Grizzlies have landed the fourth pick in the draft from
the lottery. Wouldn't it be great if they could draft Jason Williams
and then have him on the team with the Jason Williams that's already
there? As long as they stay away from ex-Net Jayson Williams, who's
in a ton of legal trouble...But the J-Will on the Grizz says he wants
to leave the team if the other J-Will is coming in, he wants to be
the only one on his team! It doesn't look likely in any case that the
Grizz will be able to draft J-Will but hopefully they'll avoid
Chinese player Yao Ming, who reminds me of Shawn Bradley: a lot of
height at 7'5," a bit of press attention but not much talent. Surely
there must be some big names there for the Grizz other than J-Will
and Ming, we shall see.
About Jerry West coming in: yeah I'm not that big a fan of it.
Not on West's end (he's a big name but what else is he gonna do at
this point in his life? Retire?) but on the Grizz end. Sure, West was
a great player back in the day, maybe even a decent coach and general
manager. But it seems much of the Laker success in recent years was
due to owner Jerry Buss, in "no brainer" moves, throwing money at
players who were already big names/stars like Shaquille O'Neal...not
on anything Jerry West did. It might be thought that a "young" team
and organization such as the Grizz would go with young, or at least
young-thinking, executives...Instead Heisley chooses old-timers such
as West and Dick Versace. But I could be wrong, hope I am, this could
work out...Again, we shall see.
Will comment on the draft as I'm able. Cyallater!

More recent Grizz news: as expected, Pau Gasol was indeed named
NBA Rookie of the Year. He won by a wide margin, a few others got
votes but it wasn't close.
This wasn't, however, enough to save Billy Knight's job as
general manager...he was fired around the same time. There were some
complaints from sportswriters about how Knight shouldn't have been
fired since he drafted such a highly-regarded player. *Shrug* I
dunno, that does make sense, but it's just the sort of thing that
often happens in the NBA (and other sports). Even with Gasol, as I've
posted here, the Grizz were still major losers for another season.
Someone had to take (or be given) the blame, that someone was Knight
(who I remember as a very good player himself), so...
Now the Grizz have hired Jerry West to be the new president of
basketball operations, with previous president Dick Versace (funny
how I always associate him with Dick Vitale, similar names and both
former coaches...Vitale though has the bigger mouth) becoming the new
general manager. If the Grizz don't win, now it's presumably
Versace's head on the chopping block! ;) More commentary on this,
hopefully, in my next post...

Subject: [Feast Land of the Grizzlies] Grizz Are Keeping Name, Finish Season
At 23-59
I haven't posted here recently, seems no one else has either.
Maybe that's not a bad thing since the switch from yahoo clubs to
groups has (alas) erased the old posts, not only from this group but
many (though not all) others as well.
In the event, the Grizzlies (of course) didn't do much in the
last couple months of the season. They did win enough games to finish
23-59 and thereby equal (though not beat) their previous best for
total wins in a season. Considering how they started 2001-2, that
doesn't seem too bad at all...but it's still another year without any
playoffs and we'll have to see how all this talk about great young
players works out (and if it works out) for the team.
The other significant bit of Grizz news is that they've announced
the "Grizz" name is staying in Memphis. Apparently, there were some
names considered (among them "Express" after FedEx and "Showboats"
after the USFL team and the old riverboats) for a possible name
change but "Grizzlies" just proved to (still) be too popular with the
fans to mess with. Good news maybe, especially for you longtime
Vancouver fans.
Anyway, the season is over (for the Grizz at least) but I'll try
to post in with any news relevant to the Grizz, such as the draft and
Rookie of the Year et al., as it (and my keyboard! ;) becomes
available. Cyallater!
