Gasol Wins Rookie of the Year, Knight Fired Anyway   Message List
Reply | Forward Message #4 of 350 |

More recent Grizz news: as expected, Pau Gasol was indeed named
NBA Rookie of the Year. He won by a wide margin, a few others got
votes but it wasn't close.

This wasn't, however, enough to save Billy Knight's job as
general manager...he was fired around the same time. There were some
complaints from sportswriters about how Knight shouldn't have been
fired since he drafted such a highly-regarded player. *Shrug* I
dunno, that does make sense, but it's just the sort of thing that
often happens in the NBA (and other sports). Even with Gasol, as I've
posted here, the Grizz were still major losers for another season.
Someone had to take (or be given) the blame, that someone was Knight
(who I remember as a very good player himself), so...

Now the Grizz have hired Jerry West to be the new president of
basketball operations, with previous president Dick Versace (funny
how I always associate him with Dick Vitale, similar names and both
former coaches...Vitale though has the bigger mouth) becoming the new
general manager. If the Grizz don't win, now it's presumably
Versace's head on the chopping block! ;) More commentary on this,
hopefully, in my next post...
