That's Inter-tainment Inter Milan survived the winter break to retain its
position atop the FSCCR, despite a serious charge from Premiership giants
Manchester United (2) and Arsenal (3). The Nerazzurri remain undefeated in
Serie A action this season despite the pursuit of clubs like Roma (7) and
Juventus (9).
Rangers (16) made the biggest jump in the first 2008 edition of the FSCCR
after some impressive domestic results that have given the club a four-point
lead over hated archrivals Celtic (18) in the SPL.
Liverpool's domestic problems and inability to put lower teams away has cost
them some points in the rankings. Falling to 14th in the FSCCR, the Reds are
still lucky to be ahead of Everton (20) here, but don't have that same
luxury in the Premiership table. Fortunately for Rafa Benitez his bread and
butter is the upcoming Champions League knockout stages where Liverpool's
proved a formidable opponent in years past.
*The FSCCR are compiled from votes by FSI writers and commentators from the
U.S., Canada, Mexico, Chile, and Argentina. The world club rankings are
published every other Thursday.*

The target of the Italian champions is 23-year-old Christopher Samba, who
only moved to Ewood Park last season from in a bargain £400,000 transfer
from German side Hertha Berlin.
The Congo international – born in France – has won many admirers since
moving to England due to a string of impressive performances, and Mark
Hughes would be reluctant to lose him.
However, Inter are believed to be huge fans of Samba, and will test the
water at the Lancashire club by offering a fee of around £5million for the
player when the transfer window reopens.

Hong Kong billionaire denies Inter Milan

Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka-shing denied a report from an Italian sports
website that said he would make an offer to buy Inter Milan, a spokeswoman
for the tycoon said Sunday. We deny (the report). Normally we don't comment
on market speculation, but this is a bit too far-fetched," a spokeswoman for
Hutchison Whampoa, a ports-to-telecoms conglomerate headed by Li, told AFP.
Details from the report carried by Francorossi.com were splashed across many
of Hong Kong's Sunday newspapers.
The website said Inter president and owner Massimo Moratti would receive an
offer of about 350 million euros (493 million US dollars) from Asia's
richest man in the next few days.

Trofeo Moretti: Inter-Napoli 2-0
Applausi. Con il passare
dei minuti cresce l'intensita della sfida. L'Inter, ancora senza i giocatori
conclusione a porta vuota.
Bellissima Inter, gol d'autore. "Ibra" sfiora il terzo con una potente
conclusione respinta a pugni chiusi da Giannello e con un tiro in corsa,
suggerito da Suazo, sempre arginata dal portiere, stavolta in uscita bassa.
A seguire la prima sfida stagionale con la Juventus per l'assegnazione del
trofeo "Birra Moretti".
*INTER (45' minuti): *Julio Cesar; Rivas, Materazzi, Chivu, Maxwell; Vieira,
Dacourt, Stankovic; Figo; Ibrahimovic, Suazo.

Most men think about it an average of 80 times a day, the costs involved
have pushed one in five into debt and it's even been cited in divorce cases.
Yes, it's *football*.
A survey by Virgin Money has found that the spiralling cost of the national
obsession has pushed one Birmingham City fan *£25,000* into debt and caused
others to miss mortgage payments and spend house deposits.
This is much less surprising when you think about the costs involved. The
Virgin Money Football Fans' Price Index puts the cost of going to a match -
including travel, a ticket, merchandise, food and drink - at £91.87, a *
17.8% rise* in the last year.
Rip-off
The bulk of the cost comprises the ticket which, according to a survey by
The Sun, 49% of fans consider a *rip-off*. Londoner Sean Kerr, a 38-year-old
lettings agent and Tottenham fan, said when he first got his season ticket
20 years ago the cost was around £8 a match. He says: "Over the years, the
price steadily increased and now it's around £35 a game."
Season tickets can cost about the same as two months' mortgage payments.
Arsenal is the priciest, with an average season ticket price of £1,355.
Spurs isn't far behind with an average of £1,064, followed by Chelsea at
£900 and Liverpool at £675.
For the new season there have been even further hikes. Sunderland introduced
the most *shocking increase*, at 19%, while Manchester United pushed prices
up 14% and West Ham 7%. But to give credit where it's due, there have been
price freezes too - and even cuts. Arsenal, Newcastle, Birmingham and Derby
have all frozen prices for the third year running, while some clubs have cut
prices, including Wigan, Bolton, Aston Villa and Blackburn.
However, the expense doesn't end with the ticket, as there are also travel
costs. "When Spurs got into Europe, I went to see them in Germany and in the
Netherlands," says Sean. "With travel and accommodation, those trips were *
exorbitant*."
The knowledge that the opposing team's fans have a much better deal just
rubs it in further. A recent survey by consumer group Which? compared the
cheapest seated season tickets for a number of international clubs. *Arsenal
was the most expensive at £885, a shocking nine times more expensive than
Italian club Inter Milan at just £94.50.* Even season tickets for huge clubs
like Bayern Munich and Barcelona cost just £175.
Showing your colours
Then there's the question of kit - supporters want to wear the club shirt to
matches. The replica football shirt scam was exposed back in 2003 when the
Office of Fair Trading found that Manchester United had engaged in *price
fixing* with the Football Association, Umbro and a number of other retailers
between 2000 and 2001. Which? is now calling for people who believe they
were victims of this rip-off to make contact, as it plans to sue under
powers granted it by the Enterprise Act.
But it doesn't take price fixing for these nylon nasties to be *over-priced*.
There's at least one new design for die-hard fans to buy each season, as
even clubs that pledge a minimum lifespan of two seasons for each shirt will
introduce a different kit or away-kit every year. For example, in May,
Tottenham Hotspur unveiled four shirts for the 2007/08 season - a home,
away, third and 125-year anniversary shirt, the latter costing £55.
The Government looked like it was going to act in 1999, when its Football
Task Force proposed a Football Audit Commission and an Ombudsman to
adjudicate supporters' grievances. But Kate Hoey, the sports minister at the
time, said the Football Association and Premier League brought pressure to
bear on the Government to ensure these recommendations were buried.
Taking action
So, as no one else is willing to control these rip-offs, it seems it's up to
the supporters themselves. The Football Supporters Federation has published
a petition at fsf.org.uk where you can add your signature calling for
cheaper tickets.
Alternatively, you can vote with your feet. Sean eventually decided to give
up his season ticket. He's not alone: Virgin found *one-in-eight* fans said
they would not be renewing their season ticket because of the cost.
But those who *surrender *their ticket are the exceptions to the rule,
because it's not that easy to give up on a passion. And even if this trickle
becomes a flood, there will always be more fans to fill the seats, whatever
the cost. There are 40,000 people on the waiting list for Arsenal, the most
expensive club in the Premiership, and while there are so many willing fans,
the beautiful game will always come with some ugly expenses.

Fan marks 'death of football'Stuff.co.nz | Thursday, 2 August 2007

NO DIEHARD: More than 20 gravestones lie on the local mountainside of an
avid Inter Milan fan. Each marks the loss of a major match played by the
club.
*An avid Italian football fan has started erecting a grave every time his
team loses a major match.*
Inter Milan fan Massimo Pecorino, 52, has so far placed more than 20
gravestones on a local mountainside according to website
Ananova<http://www.ananova.com/>.
He says his team's grave mistakes can only be fittingly marked by a
gravestone where he buries his hopes and dreams, near his home town of
Cortona.
Pecorino said: "Instead of enjoying a celebration I felt like I was at a
funeral, so I spent the day carving out my fury on a stone."
Luckily for Pecorino and the local mountainside Inter Milan are a rather
successful football club, winning the Italian premier league, the Serie A,
in both the 05/06 and 06/07 seasons.

Last time we met: Inter Milan
*As it is these days, the talk then was all about David Beckham. The
previous summer, United's no.7 – what is it about our no.7s? – had received
a lifetime's worth of opprobrium after his World Cup dismissal with England
for aiming a 'kick' at Argentina's Diego Simeone, the hard man with a
penchant for the melodramatic. An easy angle for pressmen with column inches
to fill – would Becks blow up again? Would he 'eckerslike...

Ronaldo – the one who used to be more famous than our Cristiano – was
another name figuring heavily in the tabloids over breakfast in March 1999 –
although perhaps not quite as heavily as the man himself eight years on. The
Brazilian striker's appetite then was a tad sharper for football. And,
provided his knee problems would clear up swiftly enough, he was arguably
the prime obstacle to United's path past Serie A giants Internazionale to a
semi-final berth in the Champions League. In the event, an unfit Ronaldo
didn't even make it on to the plane to Manchester for the first leg – though
Pele had apparently prayed for him. However, with Inter still as
star-studded as a clear night sky – Gianluca Pagliuca, Giuseppe Bergomi,
Roberto Baggio, Javier Zanetti, Youri Djorkaeff – and a young Andrea Pirlo
on the bench – any small mercy was gratefully received. Whichever way the
tie went, the victors would consider it some scalp.
As United prepared to face down Inter, there was the sense of gathering
momentum. Clashes of footballing titans can go either way. As with boxing,
these are cagey affairs, neither side giving an inch, holding the opponent
at arm's length, all the while waiting for the haymaker – an approach that
has so often suited Italian sides down the years. United are not about that.
Not at home. Going from the off.
This was to be no different. The Beckham backlash, when all the talking was
done, was to be feared only by Inter. Just six minutes had elapsed when

'great flourish of inspiration and redemption'. All very kind, we're sure.
But the job was far from done. On the domestic front, Chelsea, hot on our
heels in the league – another similarity with today's Treble-chasing
scenario – were seen off 2-0 in an FA Cup replay at Stamford Bridge. Having
parked the team bus across the goal at Old Trafford in a 0-0 snorefest,
United – Yorkie with another brace – were too hot in the rematch.
And so to Milan, where the team's hotel was so close to the San Siro,
Beckham could probably have arced a free-kick there from his room.
Confidence brimming, the travelling Red Army sported banners proclaiming
United 'too sexy for Milan'. The boss was also on the attack, suggesting the
appointment of 'good referee' Frenchman Gilles Veissiere would curb the less
savoury aspects of the Italian game. Sir Alex said: "If that's the case, we
can see a good match, a fair match. Then everyone is pleased."
Milan were not so pleased. Although bolstered by news of Ronaldo's fitness,
if not match fitness, coach Mircea Lucescu reacted badly to Ferguson's
words. "I always believed in the English sense of fair play," he countered.
"But then Alex Ferguson is from Scotland. And they don't have fair play
there, apparently… It is a sad thing and a bad thing, but maybe nice to see
you, to see you nice: Diego Simeone Ferguson has done it because he is
afraid – surely there can be no other explanation." Round one to the Reds…
That said, maybe fear was a factor, of sorts. Six Italian jaunts all told,
six defeats, just one goal. Hardly a record to inspire chest-beating
rhetoric. But Ferguson, the arch media manipulator with the shop steward's
tongue, chose his words with a message calculated to deflect the pressure
from his team. He knew better than anyone that the pot was coming to the
boil: this was a Manchester United with supreme confidence, a confidence
bred from success. "We come in good heart. We're in good form," he enthused.
"It is a real test for my players, but it's one I know we'll handle well –
if we get one goal that will win it."
Inter themselves were not particularly hot: no win in six, Ronaldo, fresh
from a papal blessing but still complaining of headaches. But my it was
tough, even tougher than anyone expected. Zamorano had a penalty shout
turned down after tussling with Schmeichel early on, and United's custodian
was far from idle. Zanetti's looping drive hit a post, and when Ventola – on
just three minutes earlier for Ronaldo – finally opened the scoring on 63
minutes, cashing in on a rare slip by Roy Keane following Benoit Cauet's
cheeky chip over the defence, our audible sighs of relief at the Brazilian's
early exit looked horribly premature.
Suddenly the thought of 27 minutes to hold on felt like a stretch in
Strangeways. But hold on we did, and as the seconds ticked by 10,000
travelling fans watched through fingers. Berg and Stam stood strong, twin
peaks of United's resolve. Chances came and went. Zanetti went close once
more and substitute Ze Elias, on for the hobbling Simeone (how we laughed),
missed a golden opportunity to level the aggregate score with seven minutes
remaining, dragging his shot horribly wide. There were only two minutes left
to play when United launched a rare attacking foray – and in doing so
plunged a dagger into Inter's heart. It was a touch of genius from Cole that
made it possible. Buoyed by two goals on his old Newcastle patch at the
weekend, Cole deftly cushioned Gary Neville's high-arching cross perfectly
into Paul Scholes' path. Like the class act he remains, Scholes made his
sidefoot finish look like shelling peas. Rarely has he celebrated with such
passion, though – and it comes as no surprise that he recently rated that
goal his most vital in a Red shirt.
The boss was ecstatic. "I may need a triple bypass after that. I don't care
who we get now. I'm just so happy to be in the semi-finals. We could get
Melchester Rovers and I wouldn't mind," he purred. "I see the Italian big
guns as a barometer of our progress and I think we are entitled to feel
that, with Inter out of the way, we can go all the way."

Ghana set to cap Inter's Balotelli
*By Ibrahim Sannie

Balotelli Barwuah has been promoted to Inter's first-team
*The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed its determination to
invite Inter Milan's exciting prospect Mario Balotelli Barwuah to play for
the country.*
The 16-year-old striker, who has joined the first-team of the Serie A
giants, has been unable to answer several call-ups to Italy's junior
national teams.
Barwuah was born in Italy and he is still considered as an immigrant as he
was born to Ghanaian parents.
Even though he was adopted by a Brescia family at the age of three he holds
a Ghana passport and the GFA are keen to take advantage.
"Our national team coach Claude Le Roy is closely monitoring Mario Balotelli
Barwuah for the possibility of playing for us as he is a Ghanaian with a
highly promising future," GFA vice president Fred Pappoe told BBC Sport.
"We are aware that attempts are being made to prise him away from us and we
will fiercely resist it.
"His real parents have told us that they want their son to play for Ghana
and we also very happy to offer him and others the opportunity to represent
their motherland.
"Even though Barwuah grew up in Italy, we will offer him the opportunity to
learn his culture in a friendly environment with world class players like
Stephen Appiah and Michael Essien.
"The Black Stars have shown that playing in the squad will not only enhance
a player's reputation in Africa but it will also enhance their careers.
"As we prepare for the 2010 World Cup players like Andre 'Dede' Ayew,
Balotelli Barwuah and others will be the attention of our focus to take over
from guys like Appiah and Essien to avoid the mistakes of the past."
*'New approach'*
The GFA has recently embarked on a campaign to cap Ghanaians born or raised
abroad, having lost several high profile players to some European countries
and America.
Former France captain Marcel Desailly was born in Accra while Germany
internationals Gerald Asamoah and David Odonkor have Ghanaian parents.
Denmark youth international Sebastian Quarcoe Svard, who plays for the
Bundesliga side Borussia Moenchengladbach, has a Ghanaian father while
Freddy Adu and Ofori Sarkordie have played for the youth teams of the United
States.
*'Good results'*
The GFA's new approach has already yielded dividends as German duo Hans
Sarpei and Otto Addo played in the colours of the Black Stars during last
year's World Cup.
Denmark-born defender Francis Dickoh is part of coach Claude Leroy's plans
as well as English strikers Junior Agogo and Lloyd Owusu.
"The path we have gone down can bear more fruit than it has yielded so far,"
Pappoe said.
"We are combing every corner of the globe to bring our players home.
"The local scene will continue to produce great players like Appiah, Essien
and Muntari but we have our other sons abroad who need to join up.
"This will ensure that Ghana will reclaim its position as the force in
African football and soon world football as our World Cup performance
showed.
"We are confident that the combination of the best of our home-raised
players and those aboard will help us attain our goals and fulfil the
players' ambitions."
Another player being targeted by the Ghanaian authorities is Andre 'Dede'
Ayew, son of Ghana legend Abedi 'Pele', who plays for Marseille.
Inter Milan's Batsy Kyeremanteng as well as Belgium-based King Osei Gyan are
all being monitored.

The much-anticipated warm-up match between China's Olympic football team and
Inter Milan has ended 3-0 in favour of the Italians.
The Serie A champions had the advantage for most of the game, which just
goes to show that the gap between the two sides is clearly wide.
Inter Milan weren't quite in form at the beginning of the match as Chinese
footballers created several chances to threaten their opponent's net. Two
goals were consecutively denied, putting China under great pressure. Eager
for a goal,China were still troubled at the end of the first half.

their way from that point on. Solari and Adriano contributed two goals to
make it 3-0.
