Big Thank You to the Suzanne and Chris Anderson for opening up their house and
hosting the FCA-Endurance Minnesota Christmas Party last night. It was great to
see everyone and a fun and joyful time of conversation, snacks, and sock
exchanges.

I also want to thank everyone that showed up for the Huddle Meeting yesterday
morning. We had a nice, but slightly frigid, run, which made the coffee and
fellowship in the warmth of Turtle Bread all that more enjoyable.

Look for news re January coming soon. Some events/activities I'm working on for
Jan:

1. Frozen 1/2 Marathon. I know several have expressed interest in this. I'm
committed to wearing yellow and participating. I'm preparing by bike commuting
to and from work. So far its toughening me up. :^)

2. Volunteer at Feed My Starving Children. More to come.

3. Huddle Meeting.

A quick personal note to hopefully put a smile on your face this Christmas
season: My church had its pre-K through 5th grade Christmas program tonight.
This was my 3 year old daughter's first time participating. She got up and sang
her heart out. The pre-schoolers then sat down until the last song (about 30
minutes in between sets). When they went up my daughter was missing. We were
thinking "what happened?" As soon as they were done her pre-school teacher
carried her to me. My daughter had fallen asleep - completely out. She
remained sleeping until we had to put her in her car seat in the car. It was
cute. There was also a very cut 3 or 4 year old boy stealing the ENTIRE show!!!
Its worthy of a you-tube posting.

If I don't talk to you before then (I'm sure you will see some posting from me),
I hope you all have a joyful, and blessed Christmas.

For His Glory,
Doug

start running at 8:30. Run for 30 to 45 minutes. 9:30 - 10:30 - huddle meeting

2. Christmas Party this Saturday, Dec. 12th, 7-9 PM at the Anderson's (address

salty to share and a new pair of technical socks for the gift exchange. Also,

Again, if you can only make one, please try to make the Christmas Party.

I look forward to seeing you!

Those events seem a bit far to travel for a sprint.  Anything closer to the cities?

7PM on December 12th works fine for me. It looks like I have a choir practice

Appreciate all you do.

Happy Thanksgiving (a day late) and Christmas Party

Posted by: "dougbarkema" dougbarkema@...   dougbarkema

Fri Nov 27, 2009 5:29 am (PST)

All -

Happy Thanksgiving! I hope to get this message out yesterday, but after a morning of mountain biking and an afternoon of eating more than I ever imagined, football and the couch took over. I hope everyone has a safe and fun weekend.

Christmas Party and next huddle meeting. Very similar to last year (and almost same date). Suzanne and Chris have graciously opened their house to us again this year to host a Christmas party.

Date: Saturday, December 12

Time: 7:00 PM

Where: Suzanne and Chris's home in Burnsville (address below).

What: We'll fellowship, celebrate Christmas and Jesus! Basically have a
good time with other great people.

Bring: Something sweet or salty to share.

Optional Gift Exchange: Bring a wrapped pair of bike/athletic/technical socks for a gift exchange (the cooler the better)... who can't use another pair of technical socks? :-)

Please RSVP so we know how to plan. We hope to see you all soon!

Next Huddle Meeting. This happens to be the same date as the next huddle meeting. We are still going forward with the huddle meeting, but if you can only commit to one thing that day GO TO THE CHRISTMAS PARTY. I will be running that Saturday morning and going to Turtle Bread for coffee regardless, so if you are so inclined you can join for the run and meeting. I'll then post the next meeting in Jan, which may be combined with Feed My Starving Children, or something along those lines.

Also, there is some interest in the Reindeer Run. So sign up. I understand some are wearing yellow, but also wearing reindeer antlers!

January - don't forget the frozen 1/2. A lot of people are showing interest in that.

Be careful today if you are out and about Christmas shopping.

Blessings,
Doug

Hey MN Huddle,

Has anyone in this group ever done Leadville 100? I'm trying to map out my
races next year and every year I have one big race I travel too. Although, I'm
primarily a triathlete, cycling is by far my focus. I know Leadville 100 is a
lottery selection, so may be a challenge to get in. If I do sign up and get in,
I'd be interested to hear from those that have done it and trained from
Minnesota.

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Blessing,
Doug

I think the book idea is great!  I will try to keep my eye open for a good read.  I also am excited for the website you talked about... great idea :)

I am a cross-country skier and plan on doing the Birkie this year with classic skis.  I do have both classic and skate skis so if anyone is interested in meeting up to hit the trails, let me know.

Subject: [fcaemn] First Huddle Meeting Recap

All -

Thank you to all of those who showed up today to run, and/or meet. We had a very good run, and great conversation at Turtle Bread. Although, it was a small group (and I know more will be at the December meeting) its encouraging to me, as the Huddle Leader.

We didn't really stick to the agenda, which is ok. We mostly did the "socializing" as we ran around Lake Harriet. Then we enjoyed some goodies, coffee, and conversation at Turtle Bread. Here's what we discussed:

1. Other winter activities. If you are a cross country skier, or interested in teach others, and you have a regular time you XC ski, post it. Perhaps others will join. I'd love to rent some skis and give it a try, but don't have the slightest clue. I've traditionally only downhill skied and snowboarded.

2. Rollerblading. Did you know you can rollerblade in the Metrodome? I had no idea. I know we have some bladers on our team. They can probably tell you about it or post the next time they are going to roll around the dome.

3. Winter Spinning and Running. There is a lot of excitement about Reindeer Run, and Frozen 1/2. So consider doing it. Valley Bike and Ski has some new long sleeve tech shirts. I already have one (may be the first) and wore it for our run today. Its a GREAT shirt. If anyone is interested in getting together to spin over the winter, post invitations, interests, etc.

4. Communication and Website. We discussed communication among the group from yahoo, to Facebook, to website. Dan Hawkins volunteered to create a website for the group and teach me how to administer the website for communications, articles, comments, etc. We will continue to use yahoo groups, but were thinking a website may help us market to non FCA-E members, get additional traffic for Minnesota, and perhaps allow you to track what's going on from work (we realize many do not have access to yahoo or facebook at work, and may not be checking when you get home). Thus, its another opportunity to communicate to/with the group. If you are interested in helping out in any way, let us know. We'll be looking at other huddle sites to see if there are any best practices, etc. THANK YOU, DAN for offering to do this!!!!

5. Fellowship. The group was definitely interested in fellowship/bible study this winter. We just need to figure out what. We discussed reading a book and having a book review/discussion, or finding other lessons. YOUR IDEAS ARE ENCOURAGED! I told the group this is where I'm weak at - leading a study. I'll get the group up and running, energized, etc, etc,

6. Volunteer. A lot of excitement for volunteering at Feed My Starving Children. We need 10 people. Please let me know if you are "in" for this...date to be determined.

Finally, we did have a fellowship discussion. We discussed the concept of "holiday party" vs. "Christmas party." Many of us are programmed at work to be political correct and use the term "holiday party." In fact, I almost posted we would have a holiday party for this group...and had to catch myself. No, it is a Christmas Party. We had a good conversation regarding the public's acceptance of Christian's vs. other religions.

Again, thank you for those that showed up to the kick-off for Winter Programming, and those that supported us from afar.

Blessings,
Doug

Sorry for the late notice on topic (see link below)

9:30-9:45 - social. Just chat, grab some coffee, etc.
9:45 - 10:00/10:15 - "Spiritual" training. Discuss a topic/bible study.

I didn't get any ideas so let's do this:
http://fcaresources.com/bible-study/competitor-s-creed-study-1-identity

Its working through the first part of the competitor's creed. We can spend the
rest of the time on discussing what we should focus on this year. For example,
is their a book you want to read, such as "Think Like Jesus" or other book.

10:15-10:30 - administration discussion i.e. discuss the huddle/team. What
activities do we want to work on/participate in; how do we want to grow the
huddle; what do we want to be involved in. I've received ideas on what other
huddles are doing so I can share those.

All -

Happy Friday! Hope you have a great weekend. Just a reminder the first winter programming huddle meeting is tomorrow. I've only heard from a couple people so far. Instead of asking "who will be there" perhaps I should ask "who won't be there." :-)

8:30 run, 9:30 Turtle Bread.

Hope to see you there. If not, have a GREAT weekend.

Also, if anyone wants to hit Theo Wirth around 11:30 for some mtb'ing, I'm planning on going with a couple of guys from work.

Blessings,
Doug

Many of you may already have discovered Hyland Park as a great place to trail run. I discovered it for the first time bright and early this morning. A friend of mine, whom, I frequently train with, asked if I would be interested in joining him for a trail run Sunday morning. I told him it had to be before church, but after I had an opportunity to have breakfast with my daughter (fortunately she's an early bird like me...7:00 am is sleeping in for the both of us), which meant 8:00 am for an hour to hour and half run (church starts at 10:30 and Hyland is only a 10 minute drive from my house). Anyway, what a way to start the day. We ran and saw a huge buck run across the path right in front of us, saw other runners with their excited dogs, the air was crisp, and it completely made us forget we were still in the "city." It reminded me of one of my favorite bible verses - Psalms 118:24,

"This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it."

That is a verse that I often think of when I'm in the heart of a triathlon or duathlon and am at my limit but need to focus on something other than the pain. It helps me answer "Why do I race?" and helps me overcome the mental obstacle, when I know the physical tank isn't empty. By focusing on that verse, it helps me give God the glory.

If you've ever watched "Hour of Power" you know that Dr. Robert H. Schuller always starts his service with "This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it." He says it with such power and whenever I hear it or say it, I want to get up an do something, shout out, or when racing, put the hammer down on my bike, find the extra gear in my legs, etc.

What favorite verses do you have that you focus on when racing that help you mentally find that extra gear?

Finally, if you are ever interested in trail running at Hyland Park, let me know.

I hope you all have a great week. Oh...one reminder, please let me know if you plan on participating in the Huddle Meeting next Saturday (either portion).

Blessings,
Doug

I promised by end of week I'd have information on Winter Programming (its
Saturday so week isn't over yet). I'll add the below events to the calendar,
but basis your feedback here's what we are going to try.

November 21st (next week and short notice...my apologies, but we simply need to
get together as a team and do something).
8:30 - 9:15ish optional run. Meet at Lake Harriet Bandshell at 8:25. We'll
start running at 8:30. Run for 30 to 45 minutes.
9:30 - 10:30 - huddle meeting at Turtle Bread Company (or my house if Turtle
Bread Company doesn't have room...it usually does). Turtle Bread Company is on
44th Street just west of Lake Harriet. I can provide more directions.

Rough Agenda:
9-9:15 - social. Just chat, grab some coffee, etc.
9:15 - 9:30/9:45 - "Spiritual" training. Discuss a topic/bible study. Please
send me ideas of what you would be interested in focusing on. If there is a
"theme" for this winter programming that would be great. We could build each
huddle meeting around that theme. Send me your ideas.
9:45-10:00 - administration discussion i.e. discuss the huddle/team. What
activities do we want to work on/participate in; how do we want to grow the
huddle; what do we want to be involved in. I've received ideas on what other
huddles are doing so I can share those.

December 12th. Right now, I'm thinking similar plan for December.
8:30 - optional run.
9:30 - 10:30 Huddle meeting.

I would also like to plan a Christmas Party either in December or January. If I
get that coordinated, we may replace the December meeting with the Christmas
Party.

I am also interested to see if this group would be interested in volunteering
for a session at Feed My Starving Children. We'd need to get a group of 10. I
did this with my leadership team at work, and it was a great team building
exercise, not to mention a great organization (and a Christian organization).
It was a work function but at the end the food, for those that want to pray,
gets blessed. It was a real opportunity for the Christians I work with to show
their leadership by going and praying for the food. Some joined, some did not.

Please let me know if you will attend the Huddle Meetings and if you will
participate in a Feed My Starving Children volunteer session in January.

I'll work on January - March winer programming later. I know several of us are
now thinking about running the Frozen 1/2, and I'd encourage the rest of you to
show up in yellow and cheer on all the runners or even volunteer (maybe we'll
have cowbells by then).

Blessings, For His Glory, and Together in Christ (I'm stealing a bunch of
salutations from other FCA-E teammates),
Doug

Doug,

I'm always up for the Frozen half in January - I've run it most years and will
plan on it again.

I'm good with trying the Raindeer run too - I'll help with anything you need.

Thanks,
Rob
