Steam Plant, 6 PM. General election, social, annual review and looking at next
year. Beacon maps will be available for purchase; members get one for free.
The future of Fat Tire Trail Riders club is reaching a critical point. With
Board elections a little over a week away, there has been minimal interest of
people committing to board positions. If the board cannot fill the positions,
there is the strong possibility the club will dissolve and cease to exist.
So what would this mean? No more club sponsored and supported skills clinics;
rides and social events; trail building and maintenance work parties; mountain
bike trail advocacy; and participation in local and regional trail development
to name a few. This is a turning point for the club – either members (or even
non-members who want to become involved) step up and revitalize the club, or it
will expire.
Currently we have one nomination for President, but the positions of Vice
President, Secretary/Communications, Treasurer, Member at Large nominations
appear to be vacant at this time. This is a simple organization and board
positions require minimal efforts to maintain the continuity of the club. There
are no meetings during the summer months, nor December. The meetings that are
held are to plan activities such as listed above, with most of the communication
occurring via web sites. If you have questions about the positions, please feel
free to contact me, Angie, at 481-8983 or Penny at hm 448-0346/cell 979-5916

we had another very good work day on the new trail on Saturday. 8 people showed
up, including 4 from the Gonzaga Bicycling Club. They heard about the work day
on Twitter and came to check it out. A little training session and off they
went. Good progress on the lower portion of the trail.
The Bike Club guys said that they would consider coming back during the week
with friends if the tools were available. I left the tools with Eric Armstrong.
His phone # is 413-6220. If anyone wants to go and work, they can call Eric and
pick up the tools at his house. He is near Wellesley and Assembly. He will give
his address and directions to pick up and return the tools.
Further work this year is iffy for me. I have family events planned for the next
two weekends. If the weather holds, perhaps Saturday or Sunday after
Thanksgiving will work. We might want to put that as tentative, unless someone
else wants to lead some sessions on the days that I can't be there.

Here is a nice summary of what is going on in regards to discussions on teh
Kettle Crest, and the representation of mountain bike interests in those talks.

This is a fun way to not feel guilty about extra pie ( or stuffing, or
gravy....) This is my annual tradition, weather depending. Meet me at 9 AM at
Bowl and Pitcher parking. Weather - anything but truly disgusting (very rainy,
snowy) will fly. It will be a fun loop, 8-10 miles. Call or email me, RSVPs
are appreciated.

Thanks to all who helped this weekend! We had 6 folks on Sat, and 8 on Sunday.
Good progress. Most of the burn hill trail has been roughed in. All of the trail
route has been brushed out and is ready for digging.
Please join us next Sat to hopefull complete the work. See the previous posts
for directions.
Weds Nov. 18, 6 PM at the Steamplant. This will be our annual election, year
end review, and social. You can buy Beacon maps from us at this time, too, or
just come hang a bit.
This is a meeting of the group that is being formed to oversee the Beacon trail
system. These meetings are open to the public of course.
7 PM Beacon Events Center 4848 E Wellesly.
If you want to see photos of what we did today ( Saturday) you can see them

additional days to get this trail in.

Folks, we are close enough to the Bitterroots and all the awesome at-risk trails
in Montana that is important to chime in on these issues.
From Montana Mountain Bike Alliance:
If there ever was a time for the fat tire brother and sisterhood to pull
together – now is that time. No matter if you call Asheville, NC, Downieville,
CA or Stevensville, MT home, the most important and immediate action that
EVERYONE OF YOU can do today is to comment of the Bitterroot Travel Management
Plan in Montana before the November 5th deadline. Please see the Bitterroot
Comment Suggestions on the Montana Mountain Bike Alliance website for more
details.

It is vital that you weigh in on this particular TMP as bad bicycle policy is
spreading on OUR PUBLIC LANDS and your backyard could be next! May guilt and
pinch flats plague you for eternity if you do not comment! Apathy Sucks. Don't
depend on others to carry your load. Please take 15 minutes to write your letter
for future mountain biking opportunities. We need to bury the Forest Service
with comments. Pass it on – let's get it done.
only takes a sec to write an email...
Please come out and help.

EVENT OVERVIEW
On October 22nd, experience a One Night Event in movie theatres nationwide
featuring the debut of “Race Across the Sky” – a documentary covering the 2009
Leadville Trail 100 bike race, one of the most intense endurance races of all
time - and candid conversations with Lance Armstrong, Chris Carmichael, Dave
Wiens, and other elite and amateur cyclists who overcame extreme challenges to
participate in this grueling race.
Race Across the Sky – Leadville Trail 100, featuring Lance Armstrong, Dave Wiens
and other elite and amateur cyclists on October 22nd at 8:00pm ET/ 7:00pm CT/
6:00pm MT/ with tape delay to 8:00pm PT.
This one night event will feature a panel discussion with Lance Armstrong, Chris
Carmichael (owner of Carmichael Training Systems and Lance Armstrong’s coach),
Dave Wiens (6x Leadville 100 winner), Ken Chlouber (Leadville Trail 100
Founder), Travis Brown (Olympian and professional mountain biker), and others
before and after the debut of the documentary “Race Across the Sky”.
hey all, got this request. It only takes a few minutes to write a letter.
As a member of the Northwest Neighborhood Association, I am writing to ask for
your participation in a letter writing campaign that is currently being
organized by our group. This regards the land swap agreement that was being
negotiated between the City of Spokane and the Fairmount Memorial Association.
These two parties were discussing a land swap that would give Fairmount Cemetery
5 acres of land near Wellesley Avenue and the city would gain 14 acres of wooded
land to the west of the Albi Sports Complex, which is currently under
construction in northwest Spokane. In addition, the city would gain an easement
across undeveloped cemetery property that would be used for a bicycle and
pedestrian trail from the sports complex to Riverside State Park. Completion of
this agreement was a key element in gaining our support for the sports complex,
which is located within our neighborhood boundaries.
Recently, due to lack of action on the city's part, negotiations ceased and the
cemetery is now showing less interest in completing this agreement. The Mayor's
office has made completion of the agreement a high priority and the city is
hoping to bring the cemetery back to the bargaining table to finalize the deal.
As an interested party, the NWNA has organized a letter writing campaign that
would encourage the Fairmount Memorial Association to move forward with the land
swap. I am asking for members of your group to submit letters to the cemetery
asking for their support of this agreement. Our goal is to send 100 letters by
the end of the month.
I thought this issue would be of interest to you for two reasons. There is
already an existing trail network on the 14 acres of land that would become
public property, and the easement from the sports complex to Riverside State
Park would provide a new trail that would allow access to the state park via
foot or bicycle. The route for this trail has already been determined and there
are experienced trail builders ready to start work this fall.
I have attached a letter that is being circulated to various groups and
citizens. This letter can be signed and forwarded to the cemetery, or used as a
format if you chose to send your own letter. Either way, we hope that your
membership will support us in this last minute appeal.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at 328-9750.
Thank you,
Jeff Stevens, Parks
Northwest Neighborhood Association
sample letter:
October, 2009
Mr. Duane Broyles
President
Fairmount Memorial Association
PO Box 9797
Spokane, WA 99209
Dear Mr. Broyles:
I am writing to ask you to reconsider your recent decision to cancel the land
swap agreement with the City of Spokane. As city residents, many of us felt that
the additional 14 acres of open space that would result from this agreement
played an integral part in making the Albi Sports Complex a recreation area for
all residents of the city.
Most of the space in this complex is reserved for specific sports activities.
However, the land that would be acquired from Fairmount Cemetery was to be used
for activities that would be used by a wider range of visitors including
pedestrians, runners and those seeking private space in a relatively untouched
part of the complex. In addition, the trail easement from the sports complex to
Riverside State Park would provide an important link for pedestrians and
bicyclists with minimum impact on the surrounding area.
I hope that you will appreciate my sincere desire to see this agreement move
forward as originally planned, and continue to work with the city to make this
important part of the sports complex become a reality,
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
In case you missed the article in Sunday's paper, there are still some issues
with this property exchange so trail work is on hold for the moment.

we'll being having a quick get together at the Steam Plant tonight, 6 PM. (10/7,
Weds) to do some pre-bbq planning and some miscellaneous map distribution stuff.
Hope to see you!
Angels' Wing maintenance work party, 10/11. This trail just needs a little bit
of brush cutting and tidying up. Meet 9 Am at the swinging bridge lot. Mike
Brixey is the contact, 994-7445
Bring trail tools - looppers, pulaski, rakes etc. We have extras too!
You should try the EMBA group still called "BBTC Members" also a yahoo
group.
But Devil's Gulch is definitely nearby and is well worth doing but is a bit
tight for an afternoon.
I haven't done Freund Canyon but it's a popular ride and I believe can be
done from town:
