Sorry, that's February 10 & 11.

The short-course yards meet is coming up on Dec. 10&11.  Anyone interested in going and putting some more Fairbanks entries on the lists? (I see Dave Leonard's and Sam Wuttig's (Royer) name already there multiple times)

Our webmaster just posted the updated state-wide top ten for short
course yeard.  Names in red are changes since the last posted version.
You can find the new file at
http://www.akmswim.org/pdfs/akms_scytop10_01112012.pdf

Updates to the yards state records will be posted this weekend.  I
apologize for the delay but reconstructing the database has been a
long, tedious task.

Hi all,

According to the sign at the Patty Center, it will close at 7 through
tomorrow, so I guess we'll do one more lap swim at Hamme at 6 p.m.
tomorrow, since those willing to workout early seem to prefer Hamme over
Patty. In theory we will have workout Saturday at the Patty Center at 10.

Hi all,

It looks like there is an age group meet in the morning at the Patty
Pool, followed by the UAF meet at 1:00 p.m., so unless we'd like to work
out from 6-8 a.m., we can't work out at Patty this Saturday. If 3 or 4
people beg me to work out at 6 a.m. Saturday (or want to go just an hour
from 7-8), then I'll ask for a guard to show up. I'm sure the UAF team
would appreciate fans and volunteers at their meets, which start at 6 on
Friday and 1 on Saturday; they should win as they just beat this team in
Arizona a couple of weeks ago.

On another note, I'm not going to repeat as race director for the Chena
Splash this year, as local attendance last year was light, and my wife
and I ended up doing all of the pre-race and post-race work. I'll be
happy to assist someone else if they are interested in taking on this
responsibility, otherwise the event won't happen this summer. Now is
the time when the initial paperwork needs to get filed and some initial
promotional work (getting the race on regional and national web
calendars) should get done if we were going to do the race again.

The Patty Pool is closing at 11 a.m. this Saturday, so we will at least
be able to work out from 10-11. Stay tuned though, because there's a
good chance we'll be able to get the pool starting at 9 or 9:30. I'll
keep you posted.

Hi all,

Although I suggested a potluck for this Saturday, I found out the next
day that I will be indisposed all day Saturday. Those that were at
practice on Weds said the 18th would work for a post-practice potluck.
So, let's tentatively plan for that at my house (directions to follow
next week). As far as I know, there will be practice this Saturday, and
a few people have already said they will be there (although I won't).

Hi,

This Saturday we'll try to renew the tradition of occasionally having a
post-workout potluck at someone's house. I'll host the first one, and
I've attached a map and directions to my house at 422 Eagle Ridge Road
(it's about a 20-minute drive from campus). We'll probably have the
stuff for eggs and bacon, and coffee, so no need to bring those. Family
and friends welcome, and I suppose if you're hungover it's okay to skip
workout and just show up for the food.

Hope to see you Saturday,

Happy April Fools Day to you all!

I spoke to a few of you about having a "guest coach". Well, this Wednesday (04/04), Coach Robb from the Midnight Sun Swim Team would like to come coach a master's practice. He retired from his borough job just a few weeks ago so has some extra time on his hands. It will be something different for all of us...since we've been our own coach for the last few years. Please come and urge some of those missing masters swimmers (Brain, RJ, Bob, Sam) to come as well! It'd be great to see a large group!

Subject: Nanook Swimming Booster Club

Send Email Send Email

Hi All,

Below is a message from Scott Lemley regarding the UAF swim team Booster Club.  He's asking support in particular to train Margot Adams for a shot at the Olympic Trials coming up; she's within a second of the cut.  Margot worked out with us a time or two right at the start of the school year; she's from Alaska and strikes me as a very nice person.  Anyway, here's the letter, and the Booster Club form is an attachment (which I think gets posted on our Yahoo Groups web site):

As our college season winds down I thought you'd be interested in being brought up-to-date on Alaska's only college swim team.

I recruited twelve freshmen this year, many of whom were Alaska high school graduates and one of whom is a local girl. We have three local girls on the team this year and over the past seven years have probably had a couple dozen who have chosen to go to school at UAF and represent their town as college swimmers. Close to half the swimmers who have competed for the Nanooks since the program was reinstated have been Alaskan high school graduates. This year was supposed to be a "rebuilding" year after the graduation of eight time All-American Mariya Pavlovskaya and several other very fast seniors. Instead we had our best year ever.

We won the majority of our dual meets, finished 4th in our conference championship (out of thirteen teams) and qualified five swimmers for the NCAA national championships - one sophomore and four freshmen.

I told our swimmers we were just going to nationals to "have fun and learn from the experience" to take the pressure off them. They were all first time national qualifiers. We left Texas after four days of great swimming with a national runner-up (Margot Adams in the 100 fly), our first championship final relay finish (4th in the 800 free relay) and a total of seven All-American swims - four in individual events and three in relay events. Alaska ended up in 16th place overall, our highest team finish since women's swimming was instituted here seven years ago. I truly believe we have the best young team in the country.

Unfortunately, there's another side to this story and that's why I'm sending you this email. Our athletic department has some daunting financial problems. Our Athletic Director, Forrest Karr, has been forced to cut programs to the point where many of us have the bare minimum of contests each year. Most of the head coaches have been pared back to 11-month contracts and there's little money for much needed new equipment. There's simply no money for anything over and above the essentials. At a time when our team is growing and showing so much promise the lack of funding is becoming a huge impediment.

Freshman Margot Adams (Service HS, Anchorage) was the fastest Division II freshman in the country this year in her event and is very close to qualifying for the Olympic Trials. The NCAA allows coaches to continue to train college athletes during the summer for major competitions. Margot is entered in the Santa Clara International Invitational in June in an attempt to make her Trials cut.

I'm taking two months off from my head coaching job with SST to train Margot. We'll go to Anchorage after the school year ends to use the pool at UAA for a couple weeks and give her some much needed family time with her parents and siblings. Since Bartlett won't be open this summer (again) we'll head down to San Diego in late May where she'll stay at her grandmother's house. With the help of some coaching buddies, I've secured time at UC San Diego's twin outdoor 50 meter pools to give her some crucial long course experience prior to the Santa Clara meet. If she makes her Trials cut in Santa Clara, we'll go back to San Diego to train for an additional month prior to flying to Omaha. As you probably know, as many good swimmers as Alaska's produced over the years, very few have qualified for the Olympic Trials. Maria Reeves (MSST), Andrew Billings (FAST) and Patty (Nash) Flemming (NPAC) were local swimmers who made it to that level and Mia Costello (AST) from Anchorage did as well. These are the only ones I can think of; Margot would be only the fifth Alaskan to swim at the Trials.

Even though NCAA rules allow me to train Margot outside the school year and then allows the athletic department to pick up the majority of our expenses, Forrest will only sign off on this venture if our booster club underwrites the entire enterprise. Even using the frequent flyer miles I've saved up over the years for the majority of our flights, our ground transportation, hotel and food costs will probably total over $5000.

I need at least a hundred supporters at the $50 level to completely cover these expenses. I'm attaching our booster club membership form to this email and asking if you'd be willing to become a Nanook booster and help me help Margot achieve her dream.

Thanks for your consideration.

Best regards,

Scott

I understand the Patty pool closed today for a period of several weeks. Does this mean FAST Masters will not be meeting this week, or are you relocating to another pool?

Thanks,

Glenn

Hey all,

I'm going to swim during the 6-6:50pm lap swim at Hamme Pool on Wednesday. Anybody want to meet up for a quick little workout?

Sam
