Hello Swimmers/Athletes,
Great job, again, on such a fabulous Winter Triathlon season!
Thank you to all of those who helped out, supported us, and
participated! We now have photos up on our listserve site for all
three events, Word Document results, and News-Miner stories as
well. I have even more photos of this last event, which I'll post
soon. A few items of note:
1. Alaska Masters (FAST) had another great showing for the USMS 2006
One-hour Postal Swim. I'm adding a link to the results to this site
as well.
2. The next state swim meet is tentatively scheduled for Saturday,
May 13th, at Bartlett Pool in Anchorage. Anyone thinking of going?
I am!
3. It's not too early to start planning our Summer Triathlon series,
and gearing up for open-water swimming season. June will be here
before you know it (AAAAAHHHHH!). Time to look into wetsuits if you
need them, tinted goggles, and greasing up your bikes...
4. Since we are indeed sponsors of this UAF women's swim team
banquet, we are all invited to attend this Sunday in the Butrovich
building. Sheri Layral will be sending this list an invitation with
more details.
That's it! See you at the pool!
Happy swimming,
Pieter
I think I speak for all the participants when I say "mucho thanks" to
Melissa and Yiming? (hopefully got that name right, if not my apologies)
for volunteering to help early on a Saturday morning; it was really nice
of you guys to do that. I especially thank those who sat around waiting
(and waiting) for me to finish.

Hello Gang,
The FAST Winter Triathlon #3 will be this Saturday, April 1st! We
will be STARTING the Ski AT 8:00am SHARP. Please plan to arrive
early at the ski hut for setup, race-course descriptions,
pool/clothing delivery, etc. Information of note:
1) We will be skiing a 10K course:
From the ski hut through the Skarland route, Estle connector, T-field,
and finish via Smith Lake, the Potato field, and power lines, per the
previous courses.
We will be running an approx. 11K course:
Same route as before (run along top of university, to Ballaine lake, down
past temp sign to patty center), but will continue on the road past the
patty center, up the hill to do a smaller loop again (this time WITHOUT
the cutback to the lake).
We will swim 2500 yards
2) You are WELCOME to do any combination you wish of the three events:
ski-swim, ski-run, run-swim, etc. You are also WELCOME to adjust
distances as necessary (ie, only one loop on the run, only 1000 swim,
etc.). We'd just be happy to have you join us!
3) Everyone should plan on coming to Lulu's afterward- that is the best
part of Saturdays, afterall!
4) We most likely will have little to no assistance on this triathlon,
unless somebody can rustle up a friend or preferably two to time,
transport materials, etc. Please plan in advance for this, as if there is
no help, everyone will need to time themselves, store their skis (throw
them in the bed of my truck on the way out of the run?), and get their
belongings to the pool in advance.
That's it. I hope to see everyone Saturday morning, if not before then.
Please feel free to send me an email (ftpad@...) if you have any
questions.
Best wishes and happy swimming to all,
Pieter
Hi swimmers-
The pool had to close at 9 this morning due to pump malfunctions. I'm
not sure if it will be open by this evening, but I have emailed Scott
and will send along the info when I know more.
Have a good day, Kate
Hi Dave (all team)-
I'd be willing to collect when I'm there, and get the money to you.
Thank you so much for all your hard work with managing the finances- I
know I speak for the whole team in expressing our appreciation of this
necessary and behind-the-scenes effort.
-Hope you get better soon, and can join us in the water when your shoulder
heals.
Cheers and best wishes,
Pieter

Hi team,
A great big kudos to all participants of the 2nd Winter Triathlon
today (Saturday, March 4th). Please feel free to peruse the results I
have included in a file on this website, as well as the added cool
photo album for today's ski activities as well. What great shots!
Shall we plan the next (last) one for April 1st, if there's still
good snow?
See you at the pool!
-Pieter
Hi all,
Here are the directions for Saturday breakfast after practice. Farmers
Loop has been particularly slick the last several days, so please be
careful.
1. Farmers Loop to Summit Dr. (~5 miles), then turn left onto Summit
(Dog Musher's Hall on the corner).
2. Take Summit until it ends at a T intersection with Skyline (2.2
mi). Turn right onto Skyline. You are on top of the hill and driving a
ridge line.
3. The first stop sign (0.3 mi) is Skyridge. Take a left and slowly
start going down the hill.
4. The first street on the right is Eagle Ridge; turn there.
5. Go past a horse farm on the left and then under a power line (~0.5
mi), and I am at 422 Eagle Ridge. The mailbox is on the right and my
house, gray with blue trim, is on the left.
My pad only holds a couple of cars and my driveway is a little narrow,
so you might want to park on the road if you're not one of the first
ones there.
See you Saturday!
Cheers,
Robbie

Hi Gang,
We will be having our second Winter Triathlon (Ski-Run-Swim) on
Saturday, March 4th, with a START time of 8:30am. Specifics:
1. It will not take place if the temp is below -30F.
2. The locker rooms SHOULD be open in the morning before 8:30am. If
this is not the case, please be in your suits and plan to carry your
cap and googles on the run.
3. Please arrive EARLY, meaning shoot to get at the university before
8am, to set up, stretch, arrange your gear, and go over the course.
4. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE- We need ASSISTANCE, from those people who
will not be competing in this. It makes it so much easier and flow
easily if we have a few people (2+) helping out. Wives, husbands,
friends, and lovers who help will be treated to coffee at LuLu's after
by your volunteer coordinator.
5. Tell a friend to join us! All are welcome, and it is FREE!
See you there!
-Pieter
Hi Swimmers,
I will be putting in an order with swim2000.com for some goggles,
and am willing to place orders for others to reduce/negate the
shipping cost. www.swim2000.com is the website, and is usually the
cheapest for my needs, so that's what I'm going with. Please feel
free to email me with specifics for an order ASAP, as I'm planning on
putting this through this Saturday (Feb 25).
Let me know!
-Pieter
Just wanted to wish everyone good luck at this years AK Championships
in Anchorage, wish I were there, but with a 2 year old and a baby due
in August, we can't seem to get the time. Hope everyone is well. Good
Luck and Swim Fast!!
Ben, Shannon and Arianna Hammond.
Hi Swimmers!
Wow- what a group of tough athletes!?! We had eight participants
(4 women, 4 men) in this past Saturday's Winter triathlon at the
University. It was a great time, and impressive performances from
all. I am definitely eager to do this again, next time perhaps when
it's warmer (Saturday March 4th, anyone??!).
Great job Melissa Head, Kate McGlone, Julie Ahern, Leslie Almberg,
Dave Leonard, Jon Gerken, and Brian Young!!
Next up? Alaska masters SCY champs: Fri. February 17th & Sat. the
18th. Some of us are driving down to Anchorage for it, and everyone's
welcome to carpool/caravan to cut down costs. Be sure to have the
registration sent in by the 10th to assure participation in this
fabulous, fun meet! Please see www.akmswim.org for entry forms.
See you at the pool!
-Pieter
Hi Gang,
We'll go ahead and have the Winter Triathlon this Saturday. Please
ask friends, family, sig figs to help, as we need someone both at the
pool and the ski hut for transitions.
Saturday, February 4th, 8:30am Start at the UAF Trails Ski Hut
(Next to IARC). Please be early!!
See you there!
-Pieter
P.S.-Do I really have to tell you to bring your winter clothes, skis,
running shoes, and swim suit? It's Ski, Run, Swim. Do 1,2, or all 3
events, individually/as a relay/just for fun.
Hi All- This Saturday will be swim practice as usual (Patty pool, 9-
11am), but the triathlon will be postponed until the temperatures warm
up. PLEASE let that be SOON!
See you at the pool.
-Pieter
Hi Swimmers,
Please, please- We need some assistance on deck tomorrow morning
(Jan 21- 9am Sharp) to count/time for the 1-hour postal swim. We will
also need a few extra hands to help out with the Winter Triathlon next
Saturday (Jan 28-8:30am Sharp). Please ask fellow athletes, friends,
loved ones, hermit crabs, or whatever to lend a hand.
Thanks so much,
Pieter
Hello Again-
I just thought I would make it easier on everyone and include the
website for the 1 hour postal swim here:
http://www.usms.org/longdist/ldnats06/1hrentry.pdf
Please print out the form prior to Saturday's practice and come ready
with at timer/counter and/or stopwatch with clipboard.
Cheers,
Pieter

Husbands, wives, fiances, & friends??!). Note: NOT a USMS event.
6.) Next month's breakfast potluck is tentatively scheduled for
Saturday February 11th, after practice, at Robbie Herrick's house.
This will be the last chance to gather and relax before the state
championships!!
7.) Alaska Masters SCY Champs met is Friday and Saturday, February
17th and 18th. Please find the registration form on
www.akmswim.org, and enter by February 10th at the LATEST. Let's

Happy Swimming,
Pieter

Hi Gang,
Until the pool gets back to normal schedule for our Wed. Jan 18th

see if we have a regular swim time for this Saturday.
I hope to see you all at the pool!
-Pieter

Also, it should be made clear that another reason for the celebration
is Nikki's birthday, which is on Thursday....

Hi Gang, I'm offering up some goodies to all after practice at my place on Monday, December 5th. It will be a celebration of St. Nicholas Day, the Dutch version of Christmas and my major cultural winter holiday. I should have some Spice cake, cookies, chocolate, advocaat(or eggnog), and other drinks for all. Everyone (plus more) is welcome to join in the celebration.
