Fifth seed Silvia Farina Elia also survived the
first round but she was made to work by German
qualifier Barbara Rittner for a 6-4 6-7 6-4 victory.
<br><br><br>The Italian seemed on her way to an easy win after an
early break in the second set but Rittner fought back,
forcing the match into a third set. <br><br><br>Farina's
consistency eventually paid off and she converted her first
match point with a forehand winner. <br><br><br>"I
always have tough matches against her," Farina Elia said
of her pugnacious opponent. "But I beat her the last
time we played and that gave me confidence."
<br><br><br>Farina Elia now meets either Spain's Magui Serna or
Czech wild-card entrant Kveta Hrdlickova.
