Yes, Karen.  The pedal was probably just tightened too tight by whoever. The bracket may have been weak. Who knows but in my case the arm was under warranty...

Hi Karen: The same thing happened to me and they (LBS) had to replace the crank arm, but it was under warranty. No problem after. It was the left side as well....
