Transporting a Sun EZ-3 USX - Another solution   Message List

Didn't want to add a hitch and tow a trailer. A hitch mounted rear
bumper rack seemed to put to much stress on the suspension,as well as
the trike being to long to lay sideways across the back of the car.

The only other
alternative for me was a removable roof rack of some design.

I Originally planned to mount an extended Rola Roof Top Cargo
Carrier within which the USX would fit.
However the carrier, although workable, is quite big, even
for my Crown Vic. The rack is designed for SUV, Vans etc.

The roof rack specialist (RACK SOLID in Venice Beach)
came up with a viable alternative.

By mounting the 2 removable Yakima Crossbars approx 43 inches apart
on the roof of the car, and using three Yakima bike tire clamps,
the USX fits nicely, looks good, and has proven to be a very secure
mountover hill and dale and on freeways.

The clamps fit on the interior side of the trike tires.

After several attempts at the right grasp, I found the USX At 70
pounds can be lifted by one person (with strength and flexibility)
on to the roof of the car. Two people could easily do it. A
pulley system to lift the bike up would be ideal.

Was not worried about the resale value of the ('98) Crown Vic.
Found the addition of the removable crossbars has come in handy
for transporting a Christmas tree, file cabinet, and new screen
door.
