Eskabo family GM and I just got back today from St. Louis, Missouri,
where we along with Master Jimmy Choi,Guros Scott and Bob, our special
thanks to both of them and especially to Robin for her hospitality,
she put us up in her home while we were there. Thanks to Jay Damato
and Robin and Golds Gym in downtown St. Louis where the seminars were
held. GM got to teach at the St.Louis Metro Police Academy thanks to
Sgt. Steve Pinkerton, the defensive tactics instructor for the
academy. He asked GM to show the cadets the reality of what a knife
can do. We also want to thanks to Joe,Bill,Kevin,Marla,Tara,Ralph,Greg
and Mike and all the others that I haven't mentioned who supported
this seminar for Eskabo Daan. Salamat Po and Aloha from GM and Tasi.

What a great gift for all to share, a wonderful family get together with Uncle Willie K, who will bring Hawaii to us through his performance and songs from his Willie Kalikimaka CD.  His song O Holy Night, which is on the CD is the most requested song in the islands during the holiday season.  You can't miss this performance with his special guests and his cast of plenty, it will definitely be a Hawaiian holiday to remember!

For several years Willie has performed his Holiday show at the Maui Performing Arts Center to a sell out, standing room only audience.  This year, he is bringing his show to several of the other islands in Hawaii and fortunately for us, he will end his tour here in the bay area

Hello DocB,

You need to take some time off!  Next week Friday will be a good day for
you to check back in and begin posting again.  You used the word
"challenge" three (3) times in your post.  You know full well that you
violated one of the list rules.

I fully agree with some of your conclusions, but that does not alter the
fact that you broke the rule.  I also know that you could have worded
your statement differently while getting the same point across.
Therefore you are hereby suspended for the next 7 days.

Adam"

It would be good to see the "rules" that govern this forum.  Can you provide
us that Adam?  I would like to show my solidarity with the good Dr. Barber
and therefore ask that I too be suspended through the same period.

I agree. If there was a mutually agreed upon contest and somebody failed
to show or backed out there "could" at least be a thred of content
behind the bluster, but just throwing down a challenge that is never met
then declaring "victory" seems extremely shallow. But Paul you and I
have both taken the "call me" and "come over and see for yourself" bait
with people in the past. Every instance was a non-productive "I didnt
think you would really respond" waste of time.

Exactly. Plus..I mean...come on...is anything really worth that kind of
risk? I'll risk my life and safety performing my duty, trying to help
another or to protect my loved ones. Who really needs to "protect their
martial honor" with a grudge match? I have mouths to feed and duty to
honor. I for one would feel like an idiot trying to explain that I
couldnt work because of a concussion due to a misguided ego match.
Competition rules with gear and safety measures? Sure..otherwise no
thanks.

Yup..the "system superiority" worshipers all seem to want to deny the
role of the "dog in the fight". Conditioning, mindset,
technique...overloading on any one to the detriment of the others isnt
any good. But it is easier to make people feel good about their "skills"

by teaching them drills.

I dont think there is any intentional message going on there. Personally
I think that somebody watched "West Coast Choppers" one too many times
and liked the look. I do think an organization should be a little more
analytical of the image they project however. While we would probably
still scoff at a military/law enforcement type image (5.11 pants,
stencil lettering, short haircuts, etc.) as "wannabeism". I could at
least respect the "honor through imitation" of imaging yourself after
someone who serves his fello man. All these groups that like to project
that biker, over tattooed and pierced, intimidating scowl, pro wrestler,
gangster attitude, "tough guy" crap....well Ill just say Im not so
impressed.

We have made much progress towards the foundation of the referee/jugding criteria in the last six referee clinics.  During our last clinic in Stockton, we had those who were seriously interested in the referee committee to sign an application form we have approximately 20 people who are interested so far from Stockton and Sacramento areas a few from the bay area who tolerated the traffic to get there that day.  I know there are many, many more in the bay area and surrounding areas who could not make the last clinic.

For those who are out of state, we will have a tape which will go with the rules and regulations manuel available when we are completed.

Our next referee clinic will be hosted by Alex France in Pleasanton.  Saturday, September 30th @ 9:00 a.m. We will have application forms there for those who are committed to this federation.  All are welcome to join.  It's never too late.

Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1˘/min.

(This notice is being sent to two on-line FMA digests as well as to (mostly San Francisco based) FMA practitioners via Blind cc.)

Aside from my own grandmaster, GM Ernesto Amador Presas, I can't think of anyone more fitting to kick off my second "Spotlight on the Masters" seminar series than Punong Guro Steven Dowd, the chronicler of our times, publisher of FMA Digest, and a grandmaster in his own right.

(I know this is late, but I just thought of it last night:) Since he's going to be here in person, I am thinking of collaborating with him on an FMA Digest Special Issue featuring Northern California as a, not "the", Hot Bed of FMA Activity. We can do this too for other regions across the country.

The feature would start with a brief (because it's already well-known) recap of the Stockton valley "manongs", the establishment of early FMA schools by Grandmasters Angel Cabales and Leo Giron, their early students, and so on. Then the feature would zoom to the present time and show the state of FMA in the state of (northern) California as it is now.

Along with the more well-known FMA personalities, such as "Living Legend" GM Ciriaco Canete (-- who I had the pleasure of hosting in my first "Spotlight on the Masters" seminar series a decade ago. Btw, for my second "Spotlight on the Masters" series I'm bringing up his good "friend" (smile) GM Crispulo Atillo. Regardless of what style, or system, or organization, or "side" you belong to, there are fantastic individuals like Cacoy and Ising that are a thrill to experience. I just want to provide others the opportunity to experience the same.)

Now, where was I? Oh yes, along with the more well-known FMA practitioners, I want to also highlight the lesser-known but equally dedicated teachers, schools, and students who are doing their part in the preservation, promotion, and/or evolution of FMA.

You know where all this is leading to, right? Right! My grandmaster's current project, the FMA Museum in the Philippines. He is holding an FMA Museum Fundraiser Banquet and Recognition Ceremony in April 2007. Come to that if you can. All are welcome! As far as stocking the Museum, there will be no shortage of items to put in. This special issue of FMA Digest would be just one of many items that will be placed there. I would like similar issues covering the rest of the globe.

I also want to bring to light the lesser hidden gems in this part of the country; For example, did you know there was a grandmaster-level individual with a very storied past quietly living in Antioch (or Pittsburg --I can never tell where one ends and the other begins) who passed away a few years back? He was one of only a few who actually had an official invitation from the U.S. government to come to the States to teach FMA! Sorry, if you don't know him already, you'll have to wait until the issue comes out. (smile).

So for those of you coming to this Saturday's seminar: if you feel your instructor deserves to be mentioned, bring him or her along to be interviewed. The schedule for the weekend is this (and Steven thought he's just coming in for a leisurely afternoon seminar... Little does he know I'm putting him to work as soon as he wakes up (evil smile)):

SATURDAY (September 9)

10 - 12 Noon:
Tournament Competition Training.
Coaches: Masters Rick Lafrades and Ed Farris, past (retired) IPMAF Chief Instructor for the U.S. (position no longer exists).
Attention seminar participants: You can join in on this (it's free) , while Steven interviews your instructors and other folks. (I'll film the interviews.)

Noon - 1 PM:
Quick lunch and get ready for PG Steven Dowd's seminar.

1 - 5 PM:
ARNIS BALITE SEMINAR   --There will be no interviews at this time. This is to make sure that seminar participants get what they came for.

5 PM to whenever:
Continue Interviewing FMA practitioners in the Northern California. If the interviews go on too long, we can all go somewhere for dinner, Dutch treat --What? You think I got money?? I'll be lucky to have enough to pay for my own meal after this weekend. (smile)

SUNDAY (September 10)

Morning:
Whatever Steven wants to do! If you're nice to him, those of you who want to learn more about his system can probably make arrangements to meet privately with him at this time.

Afternoon:

Steven will probably head home while some of us will head to a...

Free USFMAF Judging and refereeing clinic (also good training for potential tournament fighters --as there will be mock matches with demos and tips given by the more experienced competitors and coaches) hosted by Master Darren Tibon. Make it to this too, if you're interested in FMA tournament competition. Next stop, Disneyland!

We can do the interviews over dinner, after the seminar.

Flyer is posted in the Arnis Balite website, http://www.arnis.balite.com

For the few of you who have not heard of PG Steven Dowd by now, he is the FMA chronicler of our time and the inheritor of Arnis Balite. Here's a snippet from the website:
>>
Punong Guro at Tagapagmana Steven Dowd commenced (his) training in the martial arts in 1971. He was appointed by the Aguillon family upon their father's passing away on January 8, 1991 to represent the family art known as Aguillon Arnis. In 1998 in talking with the son and daughters of Pundador Aguillon it was proposed and accepted that the family art would use the name of Arnis Balite their fathers nickname while he was a Champion Boxer before the war with Japan, which was Kid Balite...Pundador Manuel M. Aguillon was very selective in his teachings and often refused to teach individuals who did not have the attitude, discipline, or the spirit to represent his family's art...Being his senior student Punong Guro Dowd wishes to carry on his beliefs and the art as he would have done so himself.

Background info:

"I've been actively involved in Filipino martial arts now for over 25 years, and for much of that time I've heard that it is about to become "the next big thing" in martial arts .... Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, Kung-Fu, Kenpo, Ninjutsu, JKD, Aikido, Brazilian Jujitsu; the list seems endless for all the arts that have had their moment in the media's spotlight as the featured flavor. For the most part, the FMA have remained the worst kept secret in martial arts, an insider's connection that was often hidden in plain view by those who incorporated elements of the training into other styles."
"THAT IS ABOUT TO CHANGE!"

GRANDMASTER ERNESTO PRESAS
I guess by now most of you know that "GM" will not be able to make it to the States this year as we had all been hoping. So, paraphrasing a well-known saying,  "If the mountain won't come to (us), (we'll) have to go to the mountain." In this case the "mountain" is the Philippines.

FMA MUSEUM & RECOGNITION CEREMONIES
This will take place April 21-22, 2007 at the Manila Hotel, in Manila, Philippines. Objects donated for placement in the museum will be on display there. Along with the festivities, a banquet will be held at the hotel to cover the cost of the event. The price of the banquet has not been determined yet. Depending on the number of people who come, the banquet could cost anywhere from fifty (U.S.) dollars to a hundred and fifty dollars. The price of the banquet has to be enough to cover our meals, rental for the ballroom that we'd be using, and any awards of recognition that GM Presas, and maybe other GM's, may want to present.

I know that GM Presas wants to honor all his Lakans and Dayangs. He also wants to honor ANY and ALL of his brother's instructors who show up. We want to also honor all other instructors from any FMA system or style, who show up.  Why? Because each instructor is doing their part in the preservation and propagation of FMA. This is one reason why we've decided to hold off on the FMA HOF (which is more exclusive) and concentrate on the FMA Museum (which is all-inclusive).

With the FMA Museum, we can embrace everyone who is doing their part, no matter how big or small; "each according to their abilities." At the very least, everyone who attends the banquet will receive some token of appreciation from "GM" and the International Philippine Martial Arts Federation; and their names will be inscribed on a special plaque commemorating this historic event. The plaque will be on prominent display in the Museum. If you attend, your children and you're children's children will be able to point to your name with pride, knowing that you helped establish the Museum.

To every FMA instructor and practitioner reading this, consider this your personal invitation to attend this event. If you'd like to be a part of this, please let me (Alex.France@...) know, preferably by August month-end so that we can begin the logistics. As I receive your names, I will add them to a roster of potential attendees and post this roster on our website, www.presas.org.

IPMAF 10TH WORLD ARNIS CONGRESS AND TRAINING CAMP
For the Kombatan Family, our Training Camp begins April 23rd and ends May 7th. We will fly from Manila in Luzon to our beach training camp in Hinigaran, Negros (in the Central Visayays). While we will be training hard for the next two weeks, our guests (individuals and groups from other organizations) can come along with us, train as long or short as they want, or just relax and enjoy the sea, the sand, and the sun. I used to produce the brochures for this, but this time I'm lucky to have Master Russ Blonski, in Canada, is produce the latest one. If any of you (Kombatan and non-Kombatan) are interested in this, please let me know and I will arrange for a brochure (soft or hardcopy) to be sent to you.

Gn Robert Castro and I go way back. He got me playing conga drums in
his band back in the eighties and thats when we got to be around GM

Eskabo Daan, which I characterize as a fusion filipino martial art
because of the various arts that have been combined to form it. But
yet it allows the individual guru the means to express themselves by
their own interpretation of the techniques of this system. Thanks again
