Snow's fractured thumb is another bad break<br>

Eric Snow's left thumb up to the light behind the
76ers bench, he wasn't examining an injury as much as
he was looking at a suddenly fractured
future.<br><br>Snow, the veteran point guard who was bringing some

fractures of his left thumb in the final minute of the

Center, this
morning.<br><br><a

"But suggesting [surgery] and getting it done
sometimes are two different things," McPhilemy
said.<br><br>That sounds like another excuse to point the finger at
Iverson, and Iverson isn't the issue right now.<br><br>The
Sixers are.<br><br>Iverson is the franchise. Star
players have been getting preferential treatment since
their days in junior high school, and they push the
envelope. Get away with what you can for as long as you can
- for most stars, that's the rule, not the
exception.<br><br>That Iverson avoided surgery for so long is not as
egregious as the implications of the whole situation. That
situation reeks of being another example of how he might
not have made the best possible decision, but that he
could not care less because the Sixers barely utter a
disgruntled word in his direction.<br><br>It's the
organization's responsibility to protect the collective
interest, to ensure that the whole comes above all of the
parts, no matter how significant any of those parts may
be.<br><br>For the Sixers to do that, they would need to have
some kind of disciplinary measures in place. One would
hope that they would have instituted a policy of fines
for anyone who misses training camp or whose apparent
procrastination leads to missed games. I've recently been told
that no such measures are in place.<br><br>Old habits
die hard in any organization, and the Sixers have
some poor ones to eradicate. Theirs is the same
organization that quietly complained for ages about Iverson's
tardiness but did nothing about it, letting things fester.
Then their first line of defense was to blame Terry
Royster, Iverson's former bodyguard, followed by Gary
Moore, Iverson's personal assistant.<br><br>When the
Sixers finally found the chutzpah to speak up, it was
behind Iverson's back, after Iverson left for Newport
News, Va., for the off-season after the 1999-2000
season - when they thought they had a deal done that
would have shipped the 6-foot guard to the Detroit
Pistons.<br><br>Since they weren't able to move Iverson, they have
continued to coddle him no end. (And he sees right through
it.)<br><br>They smile and say that Iverson has matured so much,
even though Iverson himself says: "I've got a ways to
go."<br><br>They implore everyone to believe that Iverson has
changed, even though Iverson gets up on a podium to accept
his MVP award and says that the thing he loved most
about receiving it was that "I did it my
way."<br><br>Perhaps if the Sixers looked in a mirror, they would see
that the problem has never been just Iverson. They
have played the role of facilitator for a while, and
unless a leader emerges publicly within their
organization, things will get worse before February's all-star
weekend at the First Union Center.<br><br>They can
airbrush a lot of things, but not that reality. And not in
a season filled with even more expectations than
the last one.

If the 76ers are going to do anything this
season, they had better get their house in order right
now. They had better make clear who their leader is.
And it had better be somebody far enough removed from
the sidelines - but close enough to Ed Snider,
chairman and CEO of Comcast-Spectacor - with the power to
have the final word. Otherwise, the Sixers will not
repeat as Eastern Conference champions.<br><br>The
fiasco involving Allen Iverson's elbow surgery on
Tuesday is a primary example of what's going on in the
organization.<br><br>What's going on is disorganization. A player elects to
finally have surgery a week before training camp and the
Sixers' brass don't have much of an
explanation.<br><br>(Before we go any further, Aaron McKie had surgery on
Tuesday, too, on his shoulder. But his domestic dispute
with his former live-in girlfriend qualifies as a
legitimate distraction. So let's deal with the Iverson
matter.)<br><br>While general manager Billy King was saying that the
franchise thought "rest" would take care of Iverson's elbow
problem, Jack McPhilemy, the team's orthopedic specialist,
reiterated that the option of surgery had been presented
months earlier. He said that he had suggested surgery at
the end of the 2000 season and again after the NBA
Finals this past June. (One explanation for the delay -
that Iverson got married in August - would have seemed
more valid had surgery not been recommended months
earlier.)<br><br>I thought families were supposed to be on the same
page.<br><br>The truth is, no one in the Sixers' brass has a
significant role in the life of Allen Iverson but coach Larry
Brown. And because Brown is busy coaching, his concerns
involve today's practice, tonight's game, and tomorrow's
scouting report.<br><br>So where is the leadership? The
one voice who commands obedience?<br><br>It's common
knowledge that Iverson usually does what he wants, when he
wants – and that the Sixers are petrified of rubbing
their superstar the wrong way. The fact that he is the
NBA's reigning MVP just a year after the Sixers tried
to get rid of him doesn't help their position one
bit.<br><br>One could say that Iverson needed to be more
responsible about his health this past summer. That
regardless of the league's collective-bargaining agreement –
which prohibits a team from forcing a player to have
surgery, especially during the off-season – he should have
recognized the importance of being healthy for training
camp. He could have acknowledged that such
responsibility comes with a contract that calls for him to be
paid $70.9 million through 2004.

COMPILED BY THE INQUIRER STAFF <br>A week before
the 76ers' training camp begins, Allen Iverson and
Aaron McKie are to undergo arthroscopic surgery this
morning in Birmingham, Ala.<br><br>How long Iverson, the
NBA's MVP last season, or McKie, the winner of the
league's Sixth Man Award, will be sidelined will not be
known until after the operations, at the earliest, team
officials said yesterday.<br><br>General manager Billy King
was not available for comment, pending the results of
the operations. Neither were Iverson, who will
undergo surgery on his right elbow, nor McKie, who faces
surgery on his right shoulder.<br><br>The Sixers, who
lost in the NBA Finals in five games to the Los
Angeles Lakers last season, will start training camp at
Penn State next Tuesday. Their first preseason game is
Oct. 9 against Dallas. Their regular season begins
Oct. 30.<br><br>James Andrews will perform both
operations, with assistance from Jack McPhilemy, the Sixers'
team physician. <br><br>Despite suffering from a sore
elbow for most of last season, Iverson led the NBA in
scoring for the second time in three years, averaging
31.1 points per game. He also led the league in steals
per game (2.51) and tied for first in minutes per
game (42).<br><br>McKie averaged career highs in
scoring (11.6 points per game), rebounds (4.1), assists
(5), steals (1.39) and minutes (31.5).<br><br>Iverson
and McKie aren't the only Sixers injured or
recovering from injuries. Point guard Eric Snow spent the
postseason playing with a screw in his broken right ankle;
forward George Lynch suffered a broken left foot in the
second round of the playoffs; and swingman Matt
Harpring, whom the Sixers acquired from Cleveland in early
August, underwent surgery a month ago to remove bone
spurs from his right ankle.<br><br>The news that
Iverson would undergo surgery first appeared on the Web
site of his company, CrossOver
Promotions.<br><br>"After a visit to a team specialist," the site reported,
"it has been determined that Allen will undergo
surgery on his inflamed elbow to remove bone fragments
prior to the 2001-2002 season. It is possible that he
may begin the season on the injury list. Stay tuned."
<br><br>Two sign elsewhere. Two of last season's Sixers
signed with other teams as free agents yesterday. Rodney
Buford signed with Miami, where he played as a rookie in
1999-2000, and Kevin Ollie moved to Chicago.<br><br>Buford,
a 6-foot-5 swingman, averaged 5.3 points and 1.6
rebounds in the regular season and 1.4 points in the
playoffs for the Sixers last season after having been
waived by Charlotte.<br><br>Ollie, a 6-2 point guard,
averaged 3.8 points and 2.4 assists for the Sixers. In his
four NBA seasons, he also has played for New Jersey,
Dallas, Orlando and Sacramento.

annual salary is beyond comprehension to most people in
a war-ravaged country where the per capita income
is barely $115.<br><br>"There is not much more you
can do to demonstrate your love for others as Mutombo
is doing now," Dr. Mamba Mashako, Congo's minister
of health, said at the ceremony, which was filled
with plaudits for Mutombo, a national hero.<br><br>The
300-bed hospital, which is expected to take about three
years to build on a 10-acre plot still occupied by the
gardens of squatters, will be called the Biamba Marie
Mutombo Hospital. It will be named for Dikembe Mutombo's
mother, who died in 1998 of a stroke that her son
believes could have been treated had Kinshasa not been on
high alert for the outbreak of a civil war that is
still unsettled.<br><br>Mutombo, 35, who went to
Georgetown University in 1987, hoping to study medicine, and
emerged four years later as a high NBA draft pick, first
envisioned building the hospital four years ago. Since then,
he has received pledges for about $10 million of the
hospital's $14 million cost. That figure includes $3.5
million of his own funds. But finding donors has proved
daunting, especially among fellow basketball players,
people Mutombo thought would be more generous.

New assistant Woodson wanted to coach with
Brown<br> <br> <br>By PHIL JASNER
<br>jasnerp@... <br><br>What attracted Mike Woodson, the 76ers'
newest assistant coach, to Philadelphia?<br><br>"What
attracted me was Larry Brown saying he wanted me to be part
of his staff," Woodson said. "It doesn't get any
better than that."<br><br>What else? "This team went to
the NBA Finals last season," Woodson said. "I've
never been to the Finals, as a player or as a coach.
That had to have been an unbelievable experience. I'd
like to be part of a situation where we go there
again."<br><br>Woodson, 43, spent the last two seasons as an assistant to
Randy Wittman with Cleveland. When Wittman was fired,
most of the Cavaliers' staff was also dropped. "When I
first talked to [Brown], he said he had some interest
but that I had to be patient, because he was looking
at some others, too," Woodson said. "I interviewed
about 2 1/2 weeks ago, and now I'm
here."<br><br>Woodson will join Randy Ayers and John Kuester as bench
assistants on a staff that includes Herb Brown and Dave
Hanners. The opening was created when Maurice Cheeks
became the coach of the Portland Trail Blazers, and
remained open after former North Carolina star and
assistant Phil Ford declined an offer from
Brown.<br><br>Woodson, the Big 10 Conference's Most Valuable Player at
Indiana in 1980, was the No. 12 overall pick in the '80
draft, going to the New York Knicks. He spent 11 seasons
in the league as a player, including part of '81-82
with the New Jersey Nets when Brown was the
coach.<br><br>He retired after appearing in 15 games with the
Houston Rockets and the Cavaliers in '90-91.<br><br>He
was an assistant coach for three seasons with
Milwaukee before joining the Cavaliers.<br><br><br>Six
shots<br>Marc Zumoff and Steve Mix will be back for their
eighth season as the Sixers' TV voices, handling four
preseason games and 60 regular-season games on Comcast
SportsNet and 11 games on Channel 57. Producer Shawn
Olesiak also is returning for his eighth season. The
Sixers' telecasts have been nominated for a Mid-Atlantic
Emmy seven seasons in succession. . .The Sixers have
added Donna Katzman as communications coordinator. *
