Salut!
The 1st World Outgames Montreal 2006 and International Right To Be Different Conference were absoultely magical and utterly amazing. Nearly 19,000 athletes, artists, participants, and volunteers from 111 participating countries, presentation of the Montreal Declaration on GLBT Rights by Martina Navratalova to the United Nations and the world, Opening and Closing Ceremonies at the Olympic Stadium with k.d. lang, Martha Wash, Cirque du Soliel, Liza Minelli, impeccably run athletic events with the higest degree of professionalism and efficiency, and an entire city, province, and nation that embraced us with warm and welcoming hospitality...it was truly a once in a lifetime celebration that left me invigorated, joyful, and with so many new friends from around the globe.
We took nearly 200 members of Equipe San Francisco to Montreal, and played, competed, sang, and performed our hearts out, and were rewarded with camraderie, exhilaration, fun, and memories to last a lifetime. We also brought home a pretty impressive haul of bling including 91 medals: 35 gold, 48 silver, and 8 bronze. Personally, I won gold in Men's Hammer and Javelin; siver in Discus and 500m Dragonboat Racing...two months after a partial rupture of my Achilles tendon!
Thank you to so many of you who supported us and helped us get there. Thank you to the wonderfully generous organizers, officials, and volunteers of the Montreal Outgames for a spectacular experience that beautifully captured and showcased all of the best that our global community is and can be. And finally, thank you to all of my teammates and fellow competitors for all of the love and support that you've shown to each other.
Please do enjoy the pics (slideshow mode is the best) and see you in Copenhagen in 2009!

Gay Games VII & Outgames Athlete Reception at GLBTHS
SAN FRANCISCO—Join Bay Area athletes to celebrate their achievements at Gay Games VII and the First World Outgames at “Cool Down, Warm Up,” a special reception at the GLBT Historical Society on Thursday, September 7th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm. This event will include the unveiling of Gay Games VII and Outgames additions to the Historical Society's acclaimed exhibit, “Sporting Life: GLBT Athletics and Cultural Change From the 1960s to Today.”
Raise a toast to Bay Area athletes and peruse “Sporting Life” for the new full set of medals, banners, team jackets, programs and other memorabilia from the big GLBT summer athletic extravaganzas. These artifacts have been added to the more than 400 items spanning four decades already displayed. Athletes are encouraged to share their Summer 2006 memories and wear their medals, team shirts, and jerseys.
“We’ve re-designed the exhibit to celebrate this thriving community’s latest achievements,” said guest curator Jim Provenzano. “GLBT athletes continue to make history, and some of the first teams, like the Gay Games itself, started right here in San Francisco.”
At the seventh Gay Games, held in Chicago July 15-22, more than 600 Bay Area participants marched into Soldier Field wearing official Team San Francisco jackets. Hundreds of competing athletes won medals in each of the more than 30 sports that took place in Chicago. Since San Francisco hosted the first two Gay Games (in 1982 and 1986) Bay Area participants have most often been the largest of U.S. contingents at each of the quadrennial Games. More than 50 Bay Area participants competed in the first Outgames, held in Montreal July 29 - Aug. 5.
The reception also serves as a warm up for the GLBT Historical Society’s 22nd annual gala, “A Home for Our History, Gala 2006,” to be held Sept 28 in San Francisco at Terra, 511 Harrison St. Tennis legend Billie Jean King and former NFL player Esera Tuaolo will be the honored. Food, drink, live entertainment and a silent auction will also be part of this festive fundraiser.
“Sporting Life” will run through December 2006. Regular exhibit hours are Tuesday through Saturday, from 1:00pm to 5:00pm.

An Evite has been sent out announcing our Equipe SF Pic Swap and Dessert Party next Saturday night from 8pm-11pm at Brian Jung's home in SOMA. All are invited to share pics, digital files, stories and some sweets. Wear your medals and bring a jump drive or some blank discs to record some of your favourites that others might have.
Also, check out the Montreal Outgames Homepage http://www.montreal2006.org for the video clip from Opening Ceremonies. Among the many highlights, it also features a brief shot of one of our very own SF Rainbow Koi Dragonboaters, Orit Gal, during the march of athletes. Perhaps you can find yourself somewhere in the crowd as well! I'm currently trying to get a copy of the live telecast on DVD and will provide that as well if I can get it in time for the party.
The deadline for ordering the official Montreal Outgames Souvenir Book has technically past (Aug 15), but it looks like they are still taking orders online today, so if you still want one and haven't already ordered, try it now!
Finally, some of you have requested the final medal count in Word as well as Excel and those files are attached to this email. 91 total: 35 Gold, 48 Silver, 8 Bronze.
Merci and see you soon or in Copenhagen - which ever comes first!

(Congratulations and Upcoming Pic Swap Party!)
What an extraordinary experience for an extraordinary team.
Congratulations to all Equipe SF athletes and artists who participated in the
1st World Outgames Montreal 2006! You were fabulous and the world got to
see and meet firsthand the wonderful people that make up the place we call
home.
Thank you for all the hard work each of you put into preparing for your
performances, and for coming together as individuals and as a group to
celebrate all the best that our GLBT worldwide community has to offer.
Thank you for supporting each other, for making new friends, and for
changing lives. Many of you joined in booing the Canadian Federal
Minister, who stood in for a Prime Minister that chose not to attend the
Opening Ceremonies and who is currently trying to overturn the Canadian law
guaranteeing full rights for gay marriage. However, many of you may not
know that two days later, that very same Minister, who was chosen to represent
the Federal Governement and the Canadian Prime Minister, made a public declaration
announcing his personal support FOR gay marriage! It seems our
message was heard loud and clear!
We certainly had fun, and what a joy it was to be so welcomed by so
much and so many in Montreal.
From the storefronts in and outside of the GayVillage, to the Metro workers and hot
Montreal Police, to the families straight and gay that filled the Olympic
Stadium and filled the festivals and streets; Montreal showed us the power of cooperation,
diversity, tolerance, and unity. We thank them for showing us such
generous and genuinely warm hospitality.
While the party may be over, the memories and photos will last
forever! So, it's been suggested that we all have one last hoorah and get
together to share stories and swap digital pics. Therefore, keep an eye out for an invitation
and in the meantime, get your jpegs burned onto a CD that you can bring to the
party so everyone can enjoy them! (and get yourself a nice big jump drive to
make copies of your favourites at the party!)
Finally, take a look at the attached file or the "EquipeSF
Medals" file uploaded onto our yahoogroup website to determine if we've
missed any of the Outgames medalists. As a group, it looks like we earned
at least 84 medals: 31 gold, 46 silver, and 7 bronze. If you know of
anyone missing from the list, please write to equipesf1@... so that we can update
the file and ensure its accuracy and completeness.
Merci and see you soon! Copenhagen

Anyone interested in trading your EquipeSF jacket for an attractive and very good quality New Zealand polo shirt as I did in Montreal and as seen in the attached photo? If the photo attachment cannot be included on this email list, I can email a photo to you. In addition to the rainbow squiqqly design and "New Zealand/Wellington" on the front, it has a Maori design on the top side of the sleeves and middle of the back, very tastefully done and a Maori language saying "Kia Kaha" on the top back that means "stay strong". If anyone else cares to trade their EquipeSF jacket for one of these NZ shirts, another one of the New Zealand women is in SF until SATURDAY OF THIS WEEK and is interested in trading also. She has a unisex medium shirt (same sizing as a men's medium), which is the size I also have. If interested, call me on my cell as soon as possible and tell me what EquipeSF size jacket you have. She probably needs a medium jacket.

Letter to the Editor:
Jim Provenzano's assessment of the Outgames Montreal 2006
(Sports Complex/Outgames a go, 8/03/06) is an extremely unbalanced editorial
with an apparent agenda to de-legitimize the Outgames' efforts to create a new,
exciting GLBT sports and cultural event, which has the potential to enrich our
community.As a Bay Area Outgames
athlete returning from an exciting and successful week in Montreal, it is
disturbing to feel a lack of support from my "hometown" LGBT newspaper. We should continue to support the Gay Games,
which has worked extremely hard over two decades to develop LGBT sports
opportunities.We can also cheer the
expansion of this movement now that LGBT world sports competitions will be
organized more often than every four years.
We should be celebrating, not lamenting, that the Outgames
succeeded in implementing their vision of a large scale sports and cultural
event combined with an LGBT human rights conference. The very significant Canadian governmental and tourism board
financial contributions, instead of being criticized as a sign of dependency,
is a promising model of private-public cooperation with clear mutual
benefits.It also demonstrates how
Montreal and Canada are creating a society where the LGBT community can become
an integral and equal participant and partner in events and Canadian
society.I recognize that the financial
concerns of the Federation of Gay Games (FGG) that resulted in FGG's change
from Montreal to Chicago to host the 2006 Gay Games are intended to avoid
repeating past brushes with bankruptcy and ensure the success of the
Games. However, if indeed both the 2006
Gay Games and the 2006 Outgames come out in the black, albeit via different
funding models, we should be happy to have two successes that together included
thousands more GLBT athletes and friends.
There are several other issues raised in Mr. Provenzano's article
that point to a Gay Games bias and misrepresent the facts. The suggestion by Mr. Provenzano that the
Outgames sports component was overshadowed by the conference and cultural
events is simply wrong.Outgames 2006
was first and foremost a sports extravaganza, with easily accessible venues and
very well organized competitions that were a privilege to participate in as well
as be a spectator or cheerleader. That
Internet search engine results yield a cached entry identifying Montreal as the
official site for the 2006 Gay Games is hardly the fault of the Montreal
committee, which long ago corrected this on their web site. The participant count is also a weak attempt
at discrediting the Outgames, in that 10,000+ athletes for an inaugural event
in a year when the Gay Games involved 12,000 athletes less than 2 weeks earlier
is a remarkable feat. Montreal's projections of 16,000 athletes may have been
met if the FGG/Montreal split did not occur. The statement that "all Chicago's foreign participants were eventually
given visas." is also incorrect, per my understanding that at least some Gay
Games participants were never able to secure their U.S. visas.Unlike the implied statement by Jim
Provenzano that the Outgames registration fees were significantly higher than
the Gay Games, these fees were nearly equal, depending on the sports selected
for participation.Lastly, Mr. Provenzano's
use of inflammatory and questionably accurate verbiage is one more reason I see
his writing as an attack on the Outgames.Examples include: "plotting", "shell game", "gleefully pounced",
"deliberately misleading", and "a veritable hornet's nest of deceptions"
For sure, Mr. Provenzano also recognized many positive
features of the Outgames, but with an overall strongly negative tone about the
Outgames, these are difficult to fully appreciate.Let's honor all of our LGBT athletes and organizers of these
excellent events.

These same hotels that had more than doubled and even tripled their normal room rates with added stiff cancellation policies for the Outgames are complaining because the participants found other options than paying their jacked up prices?? I don't think I can find much sympathy for them.

Several Montreal Hotel vendors are now pursuing a law suite, because of misleading hotel projections. Some hotels that blocked rooms will be losing millions of dollars.
I always found hotels that have Honeymoon and
Presidential Suites objectionable for being elitist.
Now they are pursuing Law Suites. What next? A-Gay
Suites with undistorted projection TVs?
As for Jim's article, I can only paraphrase Margo
Channing in kind, "I'm so happy [he's] happy."

Several Montreal Hotel vendors are now pursuing a law suite, because of misleading hotel projections. Some hotels that blocked rooms will be losing millions of dollars.

A friend of mine just had an emergency and is unable to make it to Montreal, so his room is available. At the Maison du Prêt d'Honneur (College
Residence) .
Its $644 (in Canadian dollars, taxes included) for a Studio, single bed, private bathroom, A/C, and small kitchenette. It includes 8 nights (July 29-Aug 6) and a city tour.
Its on the corner of René-Lévesque and Saint-Laurent boulevards. Fully air conditioned equipped
studio with private bathroom and kitchenette. The cleaning is done
and towels are changed everyday, sheets are changed once a week, but washing
and drying machines are available ($). At walking distance from the village,
the old Montréal, Chinatown, Palais des
Congrès and most of the major festivals, our residence offers a comfortable and
inexpensive alternative. A coffee shop is next door. Its walking distance to 2 metro lines, Orange and Green.
Let me know if anyone is interested in it.
See you all in Montreal!

Montreal Outgames is running a special promotion where you can get a free ticket to opening ceremonies with the purchase of 1 ticket. The offer is also valid for people who have already purchased a ticket as well! (See link for details). http://montreal2006.org/en_promo.html
I've already seen the preparations for the Opening Ceremonies and they are unbelievably fantastic! They rival the stage at the Turin Olympics and will be the LARGEST production ever held at the Olympic Stadium since the 1976 Montreal Olympics.
Remember, we have our team photo shoot at 4545 Ave Pierre-de-Coubertin at 5pm on Saturday before Opening Ceremonies. We will be distributing 1) VIP access tickets to our Equipe SF/USA Team
Party at Sky (with $2 discount for members wearing Equipe SF clothing) and 2) some special effects items for our grand entrace into the Olympic Stadium.... so be there!
Also, make time to go to Square Viger at the end of each day. The Montreal crew have transformed this park at metro stop, Champ de Mars, into a fabulous athletes village. There are FREE nightly performances and dances (starting at 8pm) on a huge sound stage. I went to the first one last night which had a theme of "Cabaret." It was so festive and fun, and already many athletes and performers from all around the world were there. There are booths with food, drink, souveniers as well as beautiful gardens, decorations, and waterfalls amongst the numerous places to sit and mingle with fellow athletes and performers. They even topped things off with a 30 minute firework display. Wow!
Can't wait for you all
to get here and experience this for yourselves. I'll be working at the Accreditation Center in the Palais de Congress/Viger Hall (metro = Place d'Armes) on Friday from 2pm-8pm, so perhaps will see many of you there!
Brian - have a safe trip and I'll see you in Montreal! I'm getting in about 10AM Sat. :o)

$80.00 cost to the first person that responds by email.
