Thanks for the links, those pads are significantly cheaper than CRC, i'll give
them a go. I heard the same horror stories about superstar pads from STW but I
think that was a while ago, hopefully it has been sorted out now.

The bedding technique is interesting, you are putting alot of heat into pads
very quickly right from the start. With cars you are suppose to let the pads
wear gently to 'mold' to the groves in the disc before using them too
aggressively. Too much heat results in glazing the pads at the hot spots as not
all the pad is in contact with the disc. Where the pads have glazed they become
very hard with reduced performance - maybe this is how you are getting such good
life?!

With the rate I'm going through pads I suppose I am going to have plently of
oportunities to try these bedding in methods and see what difference it makes!

cheers
Mark

Hi everybody,

My name is Grant, i'm from Australia and my girlfriend and I are moving to
Edinburgh in March next year.

I've been following this group for a few weeks now and it is great to see that
there appears to be a rather loyal MTB fraternity gracing the area.

If it's ok i would like to ask a couple of questions.

Firstly, what would be the best suburb to live in to be the closest to the local
trails but not too far from the city?

Have any of you ridden in Australia? Are any of your trails comparable to
anything out here, but here being of a lower standard, more so terrain?

I'm probably not going to have a car, so is there any easy way to get to the
larger trail centres without a vehicle?

Thanks in advanced. I can't wait to get over there and meet some of you and hit
the trails!!

Cheers,

Grant.

Hi Mark, Andrews right! you need to bed those bad boys in. They reckon it
takes about 20-30 hard stops to do this, i always take my bike out for a
spin on the road after fitting new pads. What this does is bakes the pads
making them harder to wear down. I've never tried the water trick but i read
somewhere that doing this tempers the rotor and as Andrew says it puts a
thin layer of pad on the rotor. I've tried the superstar pads and they
worked fine but after hearing a few horror stories about them falling to
pieces i switched to these

Nope. Did you bed them in?

What I do when I fit new pads is clean the rotor(s) with meths, go out into the
street and do some sprints, then hit the brakes hard. Then squirt the rotors
and calipers with tap water. Repeat until the rotors are boiling hot (x10?).
In theory this puts a layer of pad on the rotor, and conditions the face of the
pad to make it resist breaking down. I'm sure someone will pop up to say this
is bollocks though!

I always use sintered pads (Superstar ones, to be precise) and they are lasting
me >6 months.

Andrew

Did anyone else kill their brakes on the ride on saturday morning?
I fitted new pads front and back before that ride and the rear pads were worn
down to the metal! There wasn't much left on the front either.
I can't afford a set of pads per ride, was it just the weather or have I got a
problem?
cheers
Mark
PS. For those interested they are Juicy 5's with sintered pads, recently bled
and everything seems fine.

A Number 10 petition has been set up to make it law for vehicle drivers to give
cyclists a three foot minimum clearance when passing - whatever one feels about
how enforceable a law like this would be, it does actually put it in the drivers
mind that three foot is the minimum (not 6" Mr Astra driver on a blind
bend!!!!). Whereas, the Highway is quite ambiguous on this - it just says
sufficient space, which to me is anything down to where it does not cause the
cyclist to fall off.

If you feel strongly about this please sign and email on.

Here's a final reminder that our club AGM is tonight (Monday 16th
November) at the Eric Liddell Centre, 15 Morningside Road from 7pm.

Although our club president Ken Whitson is currently on holiday in
Borneo and therefore won't be able to attend he has finally managed to
e-mail me a copy of his presidential report. You can read this online
(along with the rest of our AGM papers) at

Hi Gang,

I'll be heading up into the hills leaving at 6.30 from Westgarth if anyone cares

I suggest that after last weeks shenanigans we make sure we are tooled up and

Hi guys,

Not ridden with you lot for quite a while as I ride mostly with the
Edinburgh Uni club but hoping to get out again on the night rides in the
winter. Anyway, I put a note on the Edinburgh Uni forum about the
incident with the farmer on Wednesday night and found out he has
previously chased a group of riders with his quad bike and nearly ran
one over a few years ago.

Given this and the message from Iain I sincerely hope you'll be
reporting this incident to the police. Threatening people with a firearm
(of any description) is a serious offence and the police will take it
very seriously.

Cheers
