Next Sunday sees an exploratory ride in the Lammermuirs. I plan to start at
the Carefraemill hotel (200m) on the A68. We will head North, using some of
the tracks encountered during last year's navigation training, probably
heading as far as Lammer Law at 527 m which should(?) give us some good
views over East Lothian. We may then have to retrace our steps a bit, before
heading East into the hills, looping round to the South and joining up with the
old Herring road which runs from Dunbar to Lauder. One of my maps
suggests there is a nice contouring singletrack section of about 3K, the other
suggests it's a doubletrack - I suppose we'll find out... We will make out way
back to Carfraemill along the A607 for about 4K - I don't think this should be
too busy.
From the little riding I've done in this area, I don't expect things to be
overly
technical. My planned route, which we may choose to deviate from when we
get on the ground, is about 30k. The high point is Lammerlaw, but there will
be some stiff climbs to follow after the high point. I don't know much about
many of the tracks, but expect some to be grassy and therefore hard work if
there's much rain in the interim.
It will be pretty exposed in places (Lammerlaw!), so please dress
appropriately and bring some lunch. Meet at Carefraemill hotel at 10.30 - let
me know if you're coming by return email, or if making a late decision phone
07941741972.
Finally, I am not an experienced navigator, and so if someone who is wants to
volunteer to look over my shoulder, that would be appreciated.
