Thanks for the polar wind barb movie. Somebody years ago posted a
link to that site on another board, i used it for some years after
that then it disappeared... i searched and never was able to find it,
but i think what you have is it. I will have to watch it regularly to
see how it rates against reality for different wind scenarios but
great wind forecasting that is super easy to see.. Thanks again, john
in jupiter.

http://ruc.noaa.gov/disp2.cgi?/w3/rapb/plots_13km_dev/.//+sa2_surf_wind
+se not sure if you can go to this address directly or
have to shorten it but kinda similar in a scroll format, it can
recalculate its maps every hour sometimes. should go out 72 hours.

I was out of town this week(abaco) and just arrived this late
saturday afternoon, a lot of messages were posted in that time.

For the contest, first very nice to see you put so much effort into
this and hopefully your hard work will ultimately be rewarded. If i
am able to come up when it might happen i will but my time is not
always my own so i'm on standby looking from the outside.

I fear i might speak of that which i do not know so please only take
my observations with forgiveness if they are missguided... that
said, it is called the florida wave classic and not the melbourne
beach wave classic, there were atleast two weekends during the fall
(on contest weekends) that went off with great wavesailing, one in
venice on a saturday(forever down the line wavesailing, best day of
their fall season) and jupiter had some windy wavesailing as well,
is it possible to have the contest site flexible to get the best
conditions wherever they are? Jupiter must be famous amongst the
kiters as they have had a kite contest here for a few years in a row
and just had incredible conditions for it(yes i breached the contest
zone a little bit). I imagine permits are required to hold a
contest and might not be easy to aquire for different locations
but... maybe? The only thing i am worried about is that windsurfers
are going to think there is no good wavesailing in florida and this
has been a fabulous year in jupiter, not always epic but we have had
some of those also this year, certainly we have had multiple back to
back days(not sure how many fell on weekends). Atleast it would
seem the formula racing in florida has highlighted the state for the
last few years in a good way with good timing for stronger
winds..Can the contest be run in one day? or will you require two?

The seabreeze effect is powerful, it is fueled by the sun heating
the land and can add 10mph+ to the local jupiter winds, but is best
for sideshore or slightly offshore and accelerates both our south
and north wind days(not sure if it helps or hurts onshore but don't
think it helps). Part of the light sw winds accelerating into
strong south winds is that the ridge axis is over the state and
upper level winds(and maybe lower level) trying to push sw are met
with the strong seabreeze effect trying to rush in winds from the
se, while each by themself might not be much they combine and
basically pin the winds( and therefore all the energy from the
heating of the land of the state of florida) against the coast in a
southerly direction, there is alot to it but jupiter benefits
greatly by our coast direction change, i can know if we will have a
great seabreeze by the cloud line that forms, if it moves inland
then not so much energy at the coast but if its trapped near the
coast(clouds go offshore to the north and inland slightly to the
south) with blue skies offshore it will blow, 15-20(or often 20-25
at the peak or when clouds along the seabreeze line get dark and
mean looking) with only a 10knot forecast, if the winds are forecast
stronger sw upcoast it increases the chances of it happening well.
Sometimes the ridge axis is further up the state and i can see on
the ruc maps that melbourne or daytona or jacksonville are going to
get the river of south winds in the mid to late afternoon. But
weather is not the same from year to year so what can be great one
year might not be lining up right for the next. Anybody else
notice that we had no south winds and north swell combos for the two
years of the hurricanes? This season we have had several north
swell south wind combos as the hurricanes took a break, not sure
what it means, if its a symptom or just part of a bigger picture
that is more complex than a simple if this then that.

For weather forecasting, i read the florida weather discussion, this
is the national weather service offices in miami melbourne keywest
tampa jacksonville and tallahassee discussing the shortterm and long
term weather, they often will discuss something but not make it part
of official forecasts right away, nice to hear all that could happen
asap. the RUC(rapid update cycle) is my favorite forecast model,
used by nws and churned out by supercomputer, it is constantly being
updated with full color wind barb maps for every three hours out to
72 hours, but there are different variations and so you can look at
operational, developemental, etc, they can be incredibly accurate
and show a local seabreeze occuring along a 20mile stretch of
coast. I will also look at the wave models, actual observations
through bouys and iwindsurf, the cams up and down the coast(for
visuals and their wind recordings), occasionally look at the gfs
wind model(goes out two weeks?). I call the stuart wind line to get
an actual wind reading just north of me, good for north winds, west
winds and onshore northeast 772 225 2300.

My computer doesn't work like my old one and i can't cut and paste
yet so if anybody wants links i can provide them but don't want to
risk trying it for this posting and losing all i have typed. Best
wishes, john in jupiter.

my trip took me to abaco, caught dolphin, wahoo, tuna, saw one very
large marlin(sung to tune of you picked a fine time to leave me
lucille.. you picked a fine time to leave me big blue, three lonely
lures and a horse ballyhoo, she was a looker and we couldn't hook
her, swam by then tailed off downsea, after thirty years of fishing
and all of my wishin, still making a fool out of me.....sorry i
digress often :) , no marlin bites though and that is what i went
for so wearing an unshaved beard of shame for my unsuccess. did
manage 7 bonefish in 20 minutes just before leaving the island but
that is a sad substitute for my marlin love.....

Hi,

The only thing I want to write is a big thank you for Bruce and the
volunteers that have the perseverance to get the event advertized and
organized.

Hope wind and waves get that way soon.

Best regards.
Vincent.

I agree! Great job Clyde. I frequent the Pineda causeway. It's close to home. Often, on my way out to BRR, I'll see plenty of wind there and stop. It will accommodate nearly every wind direction. Lots of places to pull off and set up.

The Banana has much nicer, cleaner water than the Indian R.

Small world.... I have a life long friend in Frankfort. We grew up
together in Oshkosh WI and our families are all friends. He is
responsible for getting me started in hang gliding many years ago. We
both still fly but he is also into kiteboarding and I, windsurfing. He
has lived there for about 15 years and ironically is down here in Ft.
Pierce on a job assignment for the next 4 weeks. Have you ever been to
Green Point? I was on vacation up there and soared that bluff with him
a couple of years back. His parents own land just to he south of launch.

Nice area around that area of L. Michigan. That unbelieveable blue
water and white sand is most likely America's best kept secret. Been
all over the world and have never seen anything like it in the summer.

Melbourne is expensive but so are the rest of the coastal cities unless
you want to live in the middle of nowhere..... (NW gulf coast). As for
the middle of the state, it's hotter and more humid in the summer and
colder in the winter than the coast areas.

I live just a mile off Lake Michigan North of Ludington.
This is the west side of the state.
Didn't look into a job yet but I'm planning on coming down for a
month and looking around. I could go anywhere but I like the area
around Melbourne so far. I've been all over Florida and it has it's

http://www.srh.noaa.gov/forecast/MapClick.php?

When Orlando has high temps nearer 90 and there is a light SW wind
forecasted with spotty showers, the probability of a SE seabreeze
increases. From April into July especially, as the ocean temps are
still coming up from their coolest times of the year we have to
outguess the wx guessers.

Sometimes, the SB is the strongest when the wx sensors along US1 are
boiling over at 88 plus even when the forecast highs are not supposed
to get that high for the region. Lucky are the days when the ocean
above the Cape delivers the SB along Playalinda Beach. This happens
far more readily than at Cocoa Beach and Melbourne. Rocky Point and
below into Palm Beach County seem to also enjoy beachside SB's more
than the double estuary zone in middle Brevard. Dunno the why's,
just the trends.

No matter what the wxmen say the direction the surface winds are
supposed to be, if they are light or even middling, the SB usually
develops as early as 12:30 to 1:00 provided the temps start ramping
up by mid morning. Seen it hundreds of times. I am most confident
when the highes are supposed to go over 90 inland, and the US 1 and
528 sensors start popping well past the forecast highes...

OK, found it!
Thanks,

If you see me on the water, it's because I moved down there.
I'm currently living in Michigan and have been sailboarding since
1982. Hate the cold though! Looking into the Melbourne area.
Do hope to see ya!

iWindsurf's site forecasting for the last few months has been suprisingly accurate. They use a blue line to indicate wind strength as they predict it, overlayed with the NWS's forecast and the two are usually different.

Has anyone else been following the iWindsurf forecasting model? I think these guys are on to something.

Big swells, well overhead, with light wind sideon Sat. Small waves,
great sideshore wind on Sunday. Had we the swell of Sat and wind of
Sun, my my, life would have been nearly perfect.
