It does not look like anyone is available for the schedule trail
maintenance on Sunday, so I am cancelling it.
I've decided not to schedule any further maintenance on my own.
I have asked people to email me with a time and date when they can be
available and I will schedule something that fits most people's needs.
Happy Trails
Hey, just trying to see if anything interesting is going on this
weekend. Doesn't even have to be biking if the kayakers want to get out
and hit the water. Sorry I haven't been out and about lately. I was in
the hospital at the end of March/beginning of April getting a blood
transfusion and I've been recovering and trying to get back into the
groove of things. I'm up for slow rides, but I probably shouldn't push
it past 5 miles or so just yet.
Well, if there's any news just drop a line.

TOSRV is "Tour Of Southern Rural Vistas". It is a 200 mile ride that
spans 2 days. It starts in Quincy,FL and goes to Albany, Ga on the
first day, then back on the 2nd. A group of approximately 26 from ECC
did it a couple of weeks ago. A good number of folks from the Robin's
group in Destin were also there.

PS: never though riding 200 in a weekend could be fun, but it was great.
I'm looking for a good used mountain bike. Nothin' fancy. Just
something to ride trails at Timberlake. I have a 15 year old Giant
Iguana that needs a new cassette, but this particular Suntour 7 gear
12/28 is so far out of production, I can't find one. For now, I'll
just settle for something to ride.
Cheers,

The club ride will meet at the Gator Cafe in Baker at 7:30 AM for the
Blackwater ride.
We have a small group doing a brick on Sunday starting at 7am at Ranger
Camp Rd. The plan is to ride 30, run for 45 min (mostly on trails),
then repeat. Any are welcome for all or part.
For those looking to do some competitive trail running, don't forget about
the Northwest FL Track Club's Trailblazer 9K, on April 22nd @ 1pm. For more

That is true. I think they really hurt themselves by making the hike/run
distance 10 miles.
That is too far for those who do not train pretty seriously. Most "sprint"
adventure race run/hike distances are 1/2 of that. Too bad. Maybe we can
do another Timberlake "Bear Bait" Duathlon, but throw in some kayaking and
orienteering.

According to Active.com the Hurlburt Adventure Race has been canceled due to lack of participation.
The club ride is as follows:
Sat 8:00a 40 & 52 mile options Freeport via the C-6 Loop - LEAVE from
the Emerald Coast Coffee Parking Lot in Bluewater Bay; PACE -
Intermediate to Fast; For additional information about this ride,
contact Dan Steighner @ 850-376-6956...
The Shalimar option is:
Start 7:30 AM Big Apple. Catch the club out on 20 and ride either ride
C-6 which would be 85 - 90 miles or we could go to Freeport and do the
Hammock Bay Loop and come back via College which is 72 miles.
Note that the Shalimar ride is faster.
Some tri types will still be doing a brick at Ranger Camp.
Start at 7am.
Happy Riding...it's gonna be windy and chilly, but remember all those
folks up North that would love to have such a warm day!
I was doing some bike parts inventory.
I have an 8 speed cogset 12-21.
I also have the seat that came with my Anthem 2 mtb. It is fairly
comfortable for rides <2hrs, but I found it necessary to upgrade for
the longer rides. It is a WTB Shadow V Team in very good condition.
If anyone wants them let me know.

Some of us are prepping for tri season. On Saturday we intend to do a brick workout at Ranger Camp instead of the group ride. Anyone who'd like to participate can come out. Several of us a preparing for Gulf Coast. Some people attended a tri clinic in Clermont. We are trying the workout suggested by the clinic coach Marty Gaal. Here it is:
ride 1.5 hours
run 3o minutes
-repeat.
Some optimists plan to do 3 repeats. We will put water, gatorade and some gels (if I get over to Dragon to get them) out for the run. The plan is to run up the road, and back down on Speed Demon. We'll put water along the road somewhere.
Speeds will vary with ability, but everyone should be back at transition at the same time since the workout is done by time rather than mileage. I.E. you will have company at the start and end.
Hey all
Just a reminder Emerald Coast Cyclist General Meeting will be held
at La Rumba in Niceville on Wednesday, April 4th. La Rumba is
located just off Hwy 20 in Niceville, in the Oak Creek Center (K-mart
Plaza). So Join us for a good meal, Fellowship, and some cycling
talk. Start time is 6:30 PM.
Also a couple of the more popular rides with the club members are
just about upon us and filling up. TOSRV, April 21-22 in Quincy FL.
and 3 State 3 Mountain in Chattanooga Tn. Both rides have rider caps
and a deadline to sign up by with no day of the ride registration.
So if you are interested in either ride the time is now to sign up.
More details about each ride can be found in the current pace line or
go on line to www.ccyclists.org for TOSRV and
http://www.chattbike.com/events/3_state/3stchlng.htm for 3 State.
You can also see who is signed up from the club at the web sites.

The official club ride options are as follows:
Option 1: 85 MILE OPTION - AT 8:00 a.m., LEAVE from the NICEVILLE
KMART parking lot; and ride to meet up with Option 2.
PACE - Intermediate to Fast
Option 2: 50 MILE OPTION -At 9:00 AM, Leave from the Portland
Community Center; Red Bay Loop, PACE - Intermediate to Fast;
Additionally, a group will depart from Big Apple Bagel in Shalimar
at 7:30, join the club ride at KMart, and ride c6 or Hammock Bay then
head back. C6 would be 80-85, Hammock Bay would be 75-80. Pace for this
ride is faster.
I plan to get a slightly earlier start from Big Apple to ride a
slightly easier pace over to KMart 7:15-7:20ish if anyone would like to
start a little earlier.
Many club members are going to ride Tour De Ranch on Saturday.
There will be club members riding from Big Apple in Shalimar at 8AM.
The plan is to ride to Mossy Head which will be approx 70 miles. Pace
will probably be 20+.
We should be at the intersection of 285 and Palm Blvd by 8:25-8:30 if
someone prefers to ride from Niceville. The ride distance would be 50
miles. Another option is to ride out to Bob Sikes and come back. That
would be 25 from Niceville and 40 from Shalimar. I may take the shorter
Shalimar option as I have been under the weather.
Happy Trails.

John Short sent this. Seemed interesting.
This is an easy way to get an opinion on biking and such to some
people who might be able to make some difference. Or for the wary
among us they might just be wanting to know we are and where we
live.......
Bicycle Commuter Act (H.R.807, S.2635). It's before the U.S.
congress right now. Here's how it'll work if passed into law: The
bill provides a tax benefit to employers who offer cash
reimbursements to employees to defray costs of riding to work. All it
requires is an amendment to the Transportation Fringe Benefit of the
tax code to extend the definition of "transportation" to include
bicycles. Employers are given the flexibility to set their level of
benefit payments, and the bike commuter can use the money to pay for
a bicycle, accessories, safety equipment, insurance, and locker or
shower fees. If you like this concept, click
http://capwiz.com/lab/issues/alert/?alertid=8647031
Then put in your zip code and the page will generate e-mails to all
your congress people. Just sign and click send

The Natchez Bicycle Club is hosting the first annual Belles on Bikes.
We are inviting women from all over for a girls only ride in and around
historic Natchez. Rides of 18, 30, 50, and 62 miles will start from Main
St
at Memorial Park, to the bluff of the Mississippi river and loop out through
the country side, along the Natchez Trace and back to a fresh lunch. Also
included is an optional, casual, tourist ride Saturday afternoon that will hit
the historical highlights of Natchez (guys are welcome on this ride).
The full brochure is available on the web site. Please email any
questions you may have.
Has anyone here, or know of anyone, who has biked from, say Pensacola
to Key West? Curious as to logistics, road, etc...more of just an
exercise in "what if" at this point...I have rough milage around 800
miles, thinking 5-6 days...thanks
John Short emailed and wanted to let everyone know that they are doing
a century on Satuday:
There will be the first Annual BWC St Patrick's Day Century departing
from The Blackwater Heritage trail, behind the Truly Spokin' Bike shop
in Milton, at 0730. There will be lots of route options and sag vehicle
support. There is no fee, although a contribution to the driver is
always appreciated. There will be coolers there if you want to throw
some personal goodies into, just tag it, or you may put in your own
cooler. The truck will be at all regrouping/rest points along the way.
One note is that truck will follow the 100 mile ride, so if you opt to
do a shorter route, the truck and it's contents will be out there for
the duration. There will be BWC riders, PORC riders, and Wheelmen
riders and it would be great if the ECC could be represented to some
extent.
Come out to a local organized ride. Starts in Vernon and you have the
option of 25, 62 or 100 miles. Rest stops, SAG and J. Michael's famous
red beans and rice at the finish! March 24th.

Just an FYI that Saturday is the ECC trip to Oak Mountain.
We have 8 going as of now and 2 camp sites. We plan to leave at 5:30am
Saturday from the Niceville area, rendevous in Crestview at 6am and
head up.
The plan is to ride the long loop Saturday once or twice, then get an
early ride in Sunday before heading home. We'll also have a few kayaks
with us for those who'd like to paddle around the lake. If you have a
last minute interest in joining us, drop an email or call my cell at
259-3952
Happy trails.

Sorry if this is a repeat. First post did not seem to make it.
The trash pickup was cancelled due to lack of available equipment.
The ride will now start at Ruckel at 8AM and go out to Mossy Head.
Those wishing to ride shorter can ride with the group to Bob Sikes and
then come back.
For those wishing to ride longer, a group is leaving Big Apple Bagel in
Shalimar at 7:15AM. They will join the ECC ride. This group usually
averages a 20+ pace. The 8AM ride will offer more moderate options.
Happy cycling
Lori M (ECC off road rep)
The trash pickup had to be cancelled due to lack of equipment available.
Instead, the group will leave from Ruckel and go out to Mossy Head at
8AM. Some plan to leave from Big Apple in Shalimar at 7:15 for a few
extra miles. The pace for this group to Ruckel is usually 20+. More
moderate options are available for the 8AM group.
Saturday's ride is scheduled to leave Emerald Coast Coffee in Bluewater
Baby ( guess Dan must have been watching Austin Powers before typing
that) at 8:30. It is 40-45, but some want to add more mileage.
Options available:
-Start at the bagel shop in Shalimar at 7:30, ride to BWB do the group
ride and throw in an extra loop for 75.
-Start with the group at 8:30 and add Fish Camp to the ride for 80.
The 7:30 start ride will be at a faster pace than the 8:30.
You can still do the 40-45, just go out with the 8:30 group and take 20
home after the stop at the store in Freeport.
Probably should have mentioned to bring your own canoe or kayak to
the paddle also! (Just in case someone was thinking they'd be
supplied)

For those that have Monday Feb 19th off. Here are some options that you
can exercise to avoid those pesky home improvement projects:
Ride:
Start from Emerald Coast Coffee in Bluewater at 8:30AM. Ride out to
Freeport, ride C6 optionally and come back. 52mi if you do C6.
Paddle:
Lincoln Park in Valp at 1PM. Depending on conditions paddle out to bay,
find a pull out, take a break and paddle back. Bring a snack and a
drink.
Happy trails.
Lori M (ECC off road rep)
There will be an off road ride starting at the TL trailhead (dirt road
side) on Sunday morning at 7AM. The route is TBD either trails or dirt
road. Majority decision.
There is also a road ride on Monday for those of you lucky enough to
have the day off (not me). If you are interested post or maybe someone
participating in the Monday ride and post info about it!! Please.
Happy riding
