Well, I'm still riding. I've been wanting to come out on Tuesdays and
Thursdays and ride with everyone, but I don't get off of work until
5:00 p.m. and when I've performed my superwoman changing feat, loaded
the bike up in the car and sped out there, I don't arrive until around
5:30-5:45, so I'm still riding alone. :-(

I've still got a watchful eye on the bicycle accident case with
Wilson, but the trial is still a couple of months off. I'll let
everyone know if there's any update.

Still looking for a riding buddy in the FWB area. Evenings after 5 or
any time on weekends.

Like you Nerissa I started with only a mountain bike.  Then I met some of the folks from ECC and started talking to them and knew that I wasn’t going to keep up on my mountain bike.  So I went to the bike shops in the area and was looking for a entry level road bike.  You’ll have to trust me there is a huge difference in the two.  Those skinny tires and more aerodynamic profile instantly give you more speed.  I still have my mountain bike but have since moved up to a higher quality road bike.  Once I got out there riding with the group I was hooked.  I couldn’t even imagine trying a 100 mile ride on my mountain bike.

I wondered why my handlebars were straight. It's so uncomfortable. I
wonder if I can swap them out with something. Although at this point
my bike is already in need of repair. I'm only able to use half my
gears.

As for buying all those other types of bikes, I don't see it
happening. I bought the mountain bike for the wide tires. I don't
even ride offroad. The thing I dream of buying the most right now is
one of those gel seat cushions. LOL.

Most important thing about a bike is that it’s getting ridden.  Ride a lot.  Most bikes sit in a garage and people hang clothes on them, or they collect dust.

You’ll probably hear “road bike with drop handlebars”.  If you’re going to do anything, at least put “slicks” on your current bike.  Get ones you can run high air pressures in.  They’ll lower the rolling resistance.  Your favorite bike shop should be able to recommend something.

If you plan to get a new bike, most important is fit.  It has to fit you.  Next, I’d get 700c tires since they have low rolling resistance.  Handlebar style is a personal choice.  Drop bars (the curved ones) offer lots of different hand positions compared to straight bars (like mountain bikes), which keeps your arms from getting more sore than necessary.  From there, buy the best bike you can afford.  Refer to the first thing I said…

If you’ve made it this far, plan to save some money for real bike shoes and clip-in pedals.  Then, you’ll want some cool bike clothes as you get leaner and start showing some muscle.  Then you’ll need a mountain bike helmet and a road bike helmet.  Oh, then you’ll want another bike for touring!  Oh YES, you’ll need a bike for commuting!!  And, you’ll want a fixed gear road bike and a single speed mountain bike!!!!!   You’ll have to have a tandem – don’t worry if your significant other rides or not!  They’ll love it when they see it!  AAAARRRGGGHHH!!!!!!!!  Ooops – I got carried away again.  Sorry!  Now you have an idea how my wife feels!

Congrats Nerissa. Keep working at it and you'll be spinning out 40mile rides with little effort in no time. You're absolultely right about the speed. Keep the pace nice and steady for at least another couple of months before you try speeding up.

Anyone who rode a bike in the panhandle probably knew the Roemers. Roy was
an integral part of the cycling community and never batted an eye when asked
to help with anything or take on a project for the club or betterment of
cycling. Roy will be remembered for his kindness and compassion and missed
by all of us who knew him.

Phyllis Roemer called me this moring and said that Roy passed away last
night. If you are a fairly recent member to the club, you may not have had
the opportunity to know Roy. You missed out on a joy of life. For those of
you who knew Roy, I know that you will greatly miss him and his dry humor.

While the details are not final, Phyllis mentioned a memorial service next
week-end with the possibility of a short ride to follow in honor of Roy.
Phyllis is with family and true to form is being very strong.

Roy, thanks for being a chapter in the book of my life, because it is full
of laughs and one of my favorites. Sydnie

Roy was without a doubt one of my favorite people in the club and will be greatly missed.  I loved seeing his "baseball room" in his house and will always remember how he had a smile on all the time and a kind word for everyone.

Sincerely, Chris Brewer...

I'm looking for a Fort Walton Beach riding buddy. I am able to ride
evenings (after 5) and weekends. I'm currently only doing about 6
miles at a time, but I'm trying to work up. If anyone's interested
give me a holler.

I'd love to be on the jury, but we can pretty much rule that out.

I hate to hear about those other fatalities. Perhaps if they started
making examples out of reckless drivers running over bicyclists then
it would save more lives. One can hope.

Wilson's public defender has entered a written plea of not guilty and
requested a trial by jury for his client. Jury trial is scheduled for
August.

I am from Birmingham, AL and know Christine Bosau-Slater from doing triathlons.
If she is as tenacious in the courtroom as in competition your DUI offender will
go down! Unfortunately it seems the dangers cyclists face are universal. We had
3 cyclists run down on a Sunday morning ride by someone going home after an
all-nighter. One hit and run (killed) on a Sunday by a guy going to the
methadone clinic!
