Here is a short reminder about the subject event tomorrow between 0800 and 1200 at Perrine Park in Valparaiso. The Emerald Coast Cyclists and Carol Pulley from the Northwest Florida Regional Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee will host the event aimed at getting people back to cycling. We need volunteers to help with this event. Enjoy the morning in the park and give something back to the community.
Bikes will be checked for general safety and operating condition. Safe cycling techniques and confidence maneuvers will be taught. Bikers will ride a confidence course, followed by group rides through the ValP area. All riders much have helmet, which will be easy to do since helmets and other items will be given away.
Of course, refreshments will be provided. Hope to see you out there. For more information please contact John Stamp, at 897-6862 or Nate Bryan at 729-2758
Thanks Chris for the good news and the Ranger Road update.
Someone also asked about the directions to the Ranger road.
I have some directions posted as to how to get to Timerlake
road wich is less than 1/2 mile down the road from the Ranger
camp. It is at the bottom of the hill from Timberlake.
See the following for directions.. note it is an old
crosscountry map. Timberlake is also a great place to mountain bike.

Greetings, folks! I just got some excellent (official) news from Jackson
Guard re: cycling and the use of Ranger Camp Road. Many of you know that
there has been some controversy about whether or not you could ride your
bike from the 2nd stop sign on RCR (13.5 miles out) going LEFT for 3 miles
to the AL National Guard tank farm (RR 213). Some range patrol cops said
yes, others said no way - through traffic only.
A couple of weeks ago we submitted a formal request for clarification of
this policy and/or a waiver so that we could use this stretch of road. I am
pleased to report that they granted this request 100% and you may now use
this area year-round within the normal Eglin Range constraints! That means
the Tuesday Nighter will now be 6 miles longer for those willing (out and
back) plus whenever else you are out there spinning you can ride there as
well (making a 33 mile out and back route from the Lewis-Turner starting
point).
Note these additional points, and heed them well: you may NOT leave the
roadway at any time in this 3-mile stretch (the woods on either side of the
road are RESTRICTED) nor may you park a vehicle along RR 213. As always, a
current Range Pass is required to be with you as is a picture ID Card.
So happy cycling, and we'll see you out on the roads and trails soon!

Did your wife ever get the film developed which shows Wayne's wound from hitting the car on highway 85 ? Wayne is working hard to get a rental ready in Navarre so he will not be able to attend . Sorry. His retirement has not been leisurely, I'm afraid.

The 29th Annual Mount Dora Bicycle Festival will be held October 10, 11, & 12, and this year’s event promises to be the best yet. The Mount Dora Bicycle Festival takes full advantage of the road and scenery of Lake County, which is recognized as one of the finest locations in Florida and the country to ride. It’s no coincidence that collegiate and pro level cyclists and triathletes choose to train here.
A number of us attended this last October and it was really well organized. If you consider attending this year then you need to make hotel reservations NOW.

Meet at Bob Sykes Road at the Hwy 285 intersection for a 26-mileout & back ride, almost to DeFuniak, for a fair amount of hills. No rest stop in DeFuniak so bring two full water bottles. This is a moderate pace ride. Ride will to return to 285 by 9:30 AM in order to give everyone time to attend church services at 10:30 AM.
Don't know about the rest of you, but TOSRV has got me wanting to just keep riding. With that in mind, Allison (the awesome rider chick from Panama City) and I are going to do a ride originating from the rec center in Portland, 0730 SHARP. The route is "tentatively" going to be C-6 to 331, north to Defuniack then 90 over to Ponce de Leon Springs and down 81 to the store at Red bay. From there we will back track to the red bay cut to 331 and return via reverse C-6. This, I figure, to be around 60. Of course, if you want to add 40 more, meet at my house, 608 Kathleen Court at 0600 for an 0615 departure (Sharp) to the Portland rec center. (A similar ride will be in May as well) The pace will be med/high with no extended rest stops, just gas and go. To get to my house, if interested in the extra 40, turn off 20 in Niceville between the Food World and McD's, this is Juniper, go to 3-way stop and turn right, this is Rhonda. Take second left, this is Kathleen court, I am second house on left, beside Nate and Teri. The weather should be great, little bit of wind, clouds and humidity, the kind of stuff we all relish in, right?!
If there are others you want to forward this to, please do, the more the merrier.

There's a set ride from Ed Walline Park every Sunday at 730 am. The park is at the corner of highways 30A and 393, about 8 miles west of Seagrove. The normal route is 55 miles, 7 to 15 riders show up, and the pace averages 19-20 mph, but can be erratic as there are occasional slow up periods to allow the group to get back together. The other favorite ride is from one end of 30A to the other, about 17 miles from end to end. A third possibility is to take 30A from Seagrove to the east end (about 6-7 miles) and along hwy 98 into Bay County. There can be a good bit of traffic on 98, and the widened shoulder for bikes is not always present, but improves in Bay county.

Hello,
Coming to the Seagrove area the weekend of 4/10 and looking for
safe routes for some road biking. Any distance is fine. Anyone
information would be appreciated!
Thanks,

That's Big Apple Bagel in Shalimar, next to McDonald's - sorry!
===============================
As an alternative ride for Sat, 4/5/03, 0800 sharp - Tab Tollet and I will
be riding for 3 hours out of Big Apple Bagel at a moderate pace (max HR
around 150). Probably do Val-P, Niceville, back on College and Ranger Camp
Road as necessary. Feel free to join us if you'd like!

Here's a short reminder about the scheduled ride this weekend.
We'll be riding from the Holt Post Office starting at 0800 tomorrow (Saturday). The ride is scheduled for 56 miles, but if you want to ride a shorter distance I'm sure they'll be a few who will decide to turn around early. Our planned course will take us through some beautiful farmland and through parts of the Blackwater National Forest. It should be beautiful!! I'll have route maps available for everyone. Call me if you need directions to Holt or additional information, 850-678-2996
Looks like the wet weather will hold off long enough to allow to get out and back without getting wet. Hope to see you there. If not, have a great weekend and ride safe.
Hello All,
My family and I are vacationing near Grayton Beach, April 19th
through the 24th. While planning for my part of the vacation, I
joined your club. I wanted to support your area and hoped I would
meet some other riders. I'm very impressed with the news letter, the
people and descriptions of rides.
My home is in Columbus, OH. I'm also a member of COP, formally
Columbus AYH, that started the true TOSRV. (Tour of the Scioto River
Valley) I wish I were going to be in Florida to ride your TOSRV but
will miss it. We also have two good week long rides GOBA and XOBA.
And our best ride Columbus Fall Challenge that is designed to have
two days of at least ten major climbs each day.
Thank you for having the information in the news letter about the
range pass. I registered as soon as I could. I bought 14 or 15
county maps of panhandle counties. Florida has a great web site for
ordering the maps. I wish Ohio had one like that.
Through the news letters and group letters I have learned about the
Baker, Munson, Berrydale loop ride and the Bob Sikes route. I hope
to do both rides. Since the snow just recently melted in Columbus I
only have a 25 mile and 40 mile ride in but hope to be doing much
more by the time I get to Florida.
I haven't figured out where Ed Walline Park is but hope to ride that
ride the first Sunday I'm there. I'll definitely stop by Robin
Wilkes bike shop to get more ride information.
Just curious, are there any particular locations that should be
avoided on a bicycle? In Ohio we have our share of people who feel
bikes should not be ridden on roads.
Sorry if I went on too long. I'm looking forward to meeting club
members to ride with. Also, if any of you are heading north, we have
many great challenging places to ride. I should be able to get you
information on most areas and rides in Ohio. My favorite area is
Southeast Ohio. There are many 7% to 20% climbs, usually a mile or
less, but they can give you a really good workout.
Regards, John Bauerle
For road routes and rides, you can call Robin Wilkes at his bike shop, 269-2453. Robin leads a couple of road rides every week, usually early morning.

Hi All,
I am going to be staying at Grayton Beach SP and need some suggestions

Also, I'd be interested in any group rides that are taking place in

Ride #1: 9:00 am, Meet at the Ed Walline Park on 30A in Walton County. It is a casual ride and the distance will be 24 miles. For more information about the ride, call David and Stacey Daigle at 682-0442.
Ride#2: 8:00 am, Meet at Ruckel Middle School for a moderate to fast pace ride up Hwy 285 and back. The distance of the rides are 15, 38, 55, and 65. For more information on these rides call Anda Berzins at 897-3376 or Nate and Teri at 729-2758.
Just wanted to remind you about the ride out of Holt next weekend. If the weather cooperates, it should be a beautiful ride. The route promises 56 miles of great scenery, and a few hills that will heighten your awareness to forces of gravity. This will be a great training ride for those preparing for TOSRV. Check the Paceline for Details.
