Hi everyone,
I was looking for a local bike club and found my way to your website.
I live in Crestview and work in Mary Esther. Currently I have been
biking stationary at the YMCA during lunch break to stay somewhat in
shape, and I would like to dust off the old Trek and start getting
some weekend rides in. I have been out of the saddle for a while and
need to do a complete overhaul of my bike, headset and crank, maybe a
new chain.
I am a road biker from Maryland and fairly new to the area. I have
done some riding around here just up and down 85, but I am not used
to the sand hazards. In Maryland you have to watch out for rocks in
the road that fall from the road side hills. Also, I don't see to
many bikes on the roads around here so I suspect that the car drivers
are not aware of road manors.
Anyway, I am thinking about joining a club and I'm interested in
yours.
Take care
Bob
I'd like to take a look at what Chuck has worked up. Perhaps Shannon and I can help.

Friends...this is not a hoax. You may want to pass this on to all family members and other friends who have a Florida Driver's License. Brad brought this e-mail home from the base:
It is a real State policy under the freedom of information act that they can release the information that is printed on your driver's license. The Florida DMV is authorized to give out (sell for $10.00) your personal information to anyone (name, DOB, phone #, address, SS#, Medical disabilities, etc) with no problem.
You can go to the State of Florida web site and block the DMV from passing on any of your information. Go to http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us and click on "ON LINE DRIVER LICENSE CHECK to verify if your driver's license is valid...once it verifies that your license is valid or not it will let you know whether or not your license is blocked and it will give you the opportunity to block it at that time by following the instructions.

Subject: [eccycling] Saturday Ride and Trash Pickup
A quick reminder about the group ride and trash pickup activities this Saturday. Start at Ruckel School, ride up to the trash area. (We'll have someone to bring your shoes up to and back from the trash area). Approx. 1 hour trash pickup (less if we have a good showing) and ride to Mossy Head (36 miles) and Mary's Loop (46 miles). Many of us ride Hwy 285, and this section specifically bears our club name on the Adopt A Highway Sign, so please come out and assist with making this much needed task a small effort.
Point of Special interest: The Kiwanis Club is having their annual Pancake Breakfast and Silent Auction at Niceville High School the same day. Come out and eat some pancakes and support the Kiwanis club. Each ECC member in good standing, will receive a crisp $1 bill to use towards the purchase of a $3 pancake ticket for supporting the trash pickup effort.
If the weather is bad, the trash pickup and road ride will be rescheduled, and we'll just sit around and eat pancakes.
Hope to see you Saturday.

The Chattanooga Bicycle Club is announcing their events for spring of 2003: the 3-State 3-Mountain Challenge and the Tanasi Mountain Bike Festival and Bike Swap Meet. We would really appreciate your sharing the following information with your friends and fellow cyclists. More detail is on our web site - www.chattbike.com.
The 3-State 3-Mountain Challenge will be held on May 3, 2003. Come experience one of the southeast's most scenic and challenging centuries. The rigorous 100-mile option will take you through 3 states (Tennessee, Alabama and Georgia) and over 3 mountains (Suck Creek, Sand and Lookout). The moderate 62-mile option remains in 1 state and crosses 1 mountain. The 25-mile option takes riders across the hilly terrain of 1 state.
Hailed by cyclists as the most unique century they've ever ridden, this year's Challenge promises to be the best ever! Again we will be starting and finishing at the Cricket Pavilion in downtown Chattanooga with a pizza party waiting at the end. The Chattanooga Marriott will be hosting the Pasta Feast and packet pickup on Friday night, May 2. A Litespeed titanium bicycle frame will be given away. Chances will be included with a Pasta Feast ticket and with the 3-State registration. Additional chances will be available at the event. Sunday, the second annual Undercover Chattanooga Bicycle and Skate Scavenger Hunt will be held featuring Chattanooga’s little known treasures. So bring the family and stay the weekend. The Chattanooga Marriott is offering a special discount rate for the event. The cut off date for this offer is April 11 so make your reservations early. The rooms are going fast.
Also we will have an all new event jersey this year for $45 if ordered before April 23, $55 thereafter. However to be assured of the correct size at the time of the event, jersey orders should be in by March 15. For those near Chattanooga, we will have some sample sizes to try on available at Suck Creek Cycle from Mar 1 - 12. The jerseys will be made by Verge Sport this year instead of Louis Garneau. It should be the same fine quality. I’m just not sure how the sizing will be until we get the samples. For those of you who are already registered and have some question about the size, you might want to check this out.
The Tanasi Mountain Bike Festival and Bike Swap Meet will be held on April 19, 2003, at the Ocoee Whitewater Center in the Cherokee National Forest. The Tanasi trail system has some of the best singletrack mountain biking in Tennessee and is still growing. Some new trail has been added to both the Chilhowee and the Tanasi trail systems to provide even more variety and challenge. This year’s festival promises to be the same fun filled day as in the past. The competition for the Bolder Hop and the Log Pull gets tougher each year. A continental breakfast and lunch are part of the festival offerings. Of course, guided rides will be scheduled all through the day. There is plenty of fun for all skill levels. This year we are adding a bicycle swap meet so bring your spare bicycles, parts, and accessories and browse, sell or trade. Proceeds from the festival go to the Tanasi trail fund.
More detailed information and applications are available for both events on our website -- www.chattbike.com and online registration is available from our web site or from www.active.com. Contact for the events is Daisy Blanton, 706/820-1157 or DaisyBRider@.... Please contact me for flyers for either event.
Robin will just be back on his bike this Sunday morning for the first time since his accident. He will probably re-start his Sunday ride next weekend at 8:00 a.m. He just needs a couple of short rides to get back in the saddle and stretch out his range of motion. Check his answering machine for details at 269-2353 for ride info.
Subject: [Cycle] Petition to save hiking/biking trail form being paved. Please join us.
Hello all,
Just what every taxpayer wants, a paved trail to hike and bike. This is especially ironic when there are budget shortfalls and a poor economy that leave little money for even maintaining parks much less improving them. The website link is a well designed, painless, and secure to protect your privacy and respect your time investment. Please consider adding your name to the list. You never know, the next place they might pave is a park near you like the Chattahoochee River parks in Atlanta or Unicoi.
Best regards,

The Alabama division of state parks is planning to pave the unimproved access road that runs over/along Double Oak Mountain at Oak Mountain State Park, the "red trail", and open this road to vehicle traffic. Those of us who live here and use the park frequently think this is a very bad idea. All of you have run on the red trail during the Oak Mountain 50K in the past (miles 21 to 25 or so) and many of you may return this year. If you think that paving the red trail is as bad an idea as we do, then please take a minute to sign the online petition at:
We still may have an opportunity to save the red trail and Double Oak Mountain from development. Spread the word to anyone who cares about the invasion/development of our state parks. I will keep you posted and hope to see many of you again at Oak Mountain on 3/29/03. Scott Parker

This morning around 8:40 a.m. a late model full-size sedan automobile pulled out onto old highway 98 unexpectedly from the opposite side of the road and hit one rider, Robin Wilkes, and the following rider Danny struck the rear of the automobile while attempting to avoid the initial collision. Robin and his bike were thrown up and over the hood of the automobile before landing in front of the now stopped auto. The elderly driver acknowledged to the Sheriff, upon interview, that he did not yield the right-of-way to the cyclist. The weather conditions were normal visibility with a light drizzle in overcast conditions. There were additional eye witnesses that testified accordingly.
Robin and Danny are both recovering this evening with mostly major bruises and various skin abrasions after emergency room exams. Robin's bike sustained irreparable impacts to the frame set due to the direct impact . . . with Danny's having only minor damage to the front wheel assembly.
This accident could have been much worse, as one can imagine, and both riders are very lucky to have been able to walk away from this unfortunate accident.

You can still book a "red-eye". I am sure those mountains are getting a little boring. Wouldn't you much rather ride next to the aqua - blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Ha! Hope all's going well. Oh yea, I never got my "silver" medal for the 2002 Fl State Road Race, masters 30-34. Any suggestions on getting that?
Take care, Robert Baker

You guys have a good ride in the cold rain. I road this morning in the weekly "Shootout" under race conditions -- 0730 with cold 40 degrees and killer wind but no precipitation (we got a total of 0.08 inches of rain this month). About 80 riders showed (slacckers stayed home)...Started out at the University Main (Tucson), heading south toward Nogales, Mex. The Jelly Belly team was in force as was US cycling team and Gordon Frasier and Mercury. Just past the Helmut Peak turnoff, mile 25, Gord grins despite the steady incline and goes as hard as you want him to. Then the big hill and everybody fights for second or just a wheel to suck. But the pace doesn't slacken; more attacks all the way to the Duval Mine...and Gord grins, until Jimmy Riccatello gives a go all the way to Nogales Hy and I wonder why he doesn't come out of retirement. Oh, did I forget to mention the 2 sprint zones on the way to Suhuarita??? How do you sprint over cracks that look like man-holes? Wish I was back on Ranger Camp Road.
Well now I understand how it feels, if yer in the top third of the peloton, even if you are cooked, the draft will lead you to a top 40 finish. Every time.
Whoa!!! Wherre did that cop come from, forget that we were occupying the two Northbound lanes all the way to Valencia, oops!!! Call it another sprint zone back to the University, Wildcat territory, and a cold one at Zoom Juice (sponsored by...)
Just a reminder about the fast training ride this Sunday. The ride will begin at 0800 at the Pensacola Beach main parking lot under the water tower. @ 42 miles. Down 98 to Navarre, over Navarre bridge and back down main beach road to starting point. Flat, Flat, Flat Fastest rider sets the pace. It will be a little cool Sunday but nothing a little extra clothing won't take care of. I hope all or a good portion of FWB Tuesday night crowd can make it. Sounds like there should be a good showing from the Pensacola crowd with a few riders coming over from Mobile. Hope to see ya there.

Dan, Dan, Dan... "cool crisp air"?! - that's like seeing a proctologist and being told "you might feel some slight discomfort"... Current Sat forecast is for 34F at 9:00 AM, wind chill of 27F with winds out of the NW at 12 mph - but at least it'll be sunny! I'll probably wait till noon when it'll be a balmy 40F wind chill, and then I'll ride my trainer indoors. Yeah, I'm a big sissy - I can deal with that - Cb...

Just a quick reminder about the meeting this Thursday, January 9th at Tampico's Mexican Restaurant in Niceville. The agenda will be usual food and fellowship with other peddling bipods, as well as going over goals, plans, and aims for the ECC in 2003. Start time is 6:30 Pm.
Topics of Discussion for the meeting will include club rides, a new club jersey, meeting location, social agenda for the year, race sponsorship, and any other topic you wish to discuss. Additionally, we would like to solidify the ECC Board by filling a few vacant positions.
Hope to see you there.

PS. Club ride this Saturday, 9:00 AM: Meet at Mr. Beans in Bluewater Bay. Out to Nicks (20 miles), Freeport (40 miles), or C-6 road to Freeport (52 miles) Contact: John Stamp at 897-6862.
I am going to hold a ride at Pensacola Beach on Sunday, January 26 at 0800. The intention of this ride is to give those of us who enjoy riding fast, a chance to get out and stretch their off season legs. I hope to get riders from Mobile, Pensacola, and Fort Walton.
The ride will be @ 42 miles of flat roads. The ride will start at the main parking lot at Pensacola Beach, go over "Bob Sikes" bridge to 98, down 98 to Navarre, over the "Navarre" bridge, and back down the main beach road to Pensacola Beach. This route is the same as the century ride that was held a Pensacola Beach last year. This time of year the traffic on any of these roads is very light so the riding should be as safe as any where.
For those of you from Fort Walton, I am trying to have a Tuesday night ride on Sunday morning with a slightly different format. I would like the ride to be fast but with out people attacking. In other words, just a good fast paceline which should allow for most people to hang in without getting dropped. The roads are totally flat for the most part so this would also give us roadies a chance to ride our time trailing gear. And fyi, Fort Walton to Pensacola Beach is approximately 45 minutes driving time.
For those of you from the West Florida Wheelmen, there will also be a ride from Jim Wallace's house the same day and time. His ride will offer a little friendlier pace for those of you not interested in riding fast.
Should the attendance warrant it, I would like for this ride to evolve into a monthly event. I believe we could have this ride up into April without traffic problems.
I intend on doing the ride regardless of the turnout, but for curiosity's sake if you think you may be interested just give me an email letting me know.
Should you have any questions feel free to email me.
Anyone fortunate enough to have tomorrow (Thu, Dec 26) off and wanting to go
out for an hour or two doing the proverbial small chain ring ride is welcome
to show at Big Apple Bagel in Shalimar (next to McDonald's) at noon. Come
on out with that new gear you know you want to show off anyway! Hope to see
you there - Cheers, Chris...
