Palm Beach Post Supports Safe Cycling
Florida cyclists were pleased to learn today that the
Palm Beach Post has endorsed their position in urging
the building of safe facilities for bicycling on Route
A1A in Delray Beach. Today’s editorial reads: “Any day
now, the Florida Department of Transportation will
reveal whether the agency favors public safety and
public access for a public road. If those are the
state's priorities, the department will recommend
5-foot-wide bicycle lanes and complete sidewalks along
A1A in Delray Beach.” The Palm Beach Post had earlier
supported a compromise to build a 3-foot shoulder that
it now says, “fails on the two key points: safety and
access. The county's pedestrian/cyclist fatality rate
is nearly double the national average. The difference
between a 3-foot "shoulder" and a 5-foot "lane" may
seem small, but it makes all the difference.”
