This comes to us from our TEAM BAD friend, Rolando Garcia; World
Traveling JKD man!
-----------------
Hey Guys!
I had the pleasure of finally training with Tuhon Dan Inosanto this
past weekend here in Honolulu. It was hosted by none other than
Burton Richardson.
When my friend, Jarlo Ilano, invited me to the seminar, I simply
couldn't say no. Aside from having the opportunity to visit Hawaii
(my old hometown), to train with Tuhon Dan AND Burton in one
location...I simply couldn't pass it up!!
Some highlights:
- Tuhon covered Villabrille/Illustrisimo stick/knife-double knife
material. He proceeded to show how each drill (which were tricky to
get at first) blended into the style of boxing that most filipinos
are known for.
- He also covered some history of filipino martial arts,
particularly of the Filipino constabulary, and we were lucky enough
to view some footage of vintage training with bolos. Wow. Always fun
to think that we are SO progressive and up to date. Nothing more
humbling than to see old-school pinoys go to ground and pound to a
submission back in the day.
- He also covered some ground work...which was brilliant. Tuhon is
NO SLOUCH on the ground!! He flowed from one position to another,
showing strikes (legal and illegal) AND submissions. Takedowns to
position to counter to strikes/submissions...at 72 he was AMAZINGLY
fluid. A true BJJ black belt and athlete. That being said, he
himself said that the groundwork we were being exposed to was his
understanding of the ground, which comes from many sources.
- The last 5 minutes of the seminar...the panantukan/dirty boxing:
WOW. Took 2 seconds to apply, and opened up a WORLD of
possibilities. He showed so many combos, tricks that refs couldn't
see, combos that looked like "accidents" that resulted in
knockdowns...amazing in their simplicity! Just when I thought he had
shown us everything, he busts out an inside game so simple and
brilliant, I can't wait to glove up and try it live!
- Tuhon's wisdom, knowledge, and humility truly amazes me. I wrote
down so many things that he said that I'll be thinking about a lot.
- BURTON was so helpful, knowledgeable, and just plain fun to hang
around with! ANYTIME I had a question, he was always willing to
demonstrate. When I mentioned to him that I had a question about the
bil jee, he proceeded to ask Tuhon about it, so that it was covered
in-depth at the workshop. He embodies so much of what Tuhon Dan is
famous for: friendly, humble...and extremely skilled! He is a real
deal JKD man in every sense of the word.
- On an interesting sidenote: the attendee list, initially, was
short by 50%, to make it Tuhon Dan's while to come out. We were told
that Burton didn't think it'd look like it would work. He told Simo
Paula about the potential for not having enough attendees...and Simo
apparently said to go ahead, and that she'd absorb the risk. She was
willing to take the loss, so that the seminar would go through. SUCH
A RARE THING, in this day and age where seminars tend to be
cancelled last minute, often due to lack of attendance. Much props
to her and Tuhon for going ahead (thankfully, more than enough
showed up).

Saw this from Art de Vany's site and it reinforced what we've been
talking about (and the way we trained) for years...
This is in reverence to a well-researched article on exercise-related
deaths from Men's Heatlh.

It adds new statistics and explanations for the benefits and risks of
exercise. As with nearly everything in human physiology, there is an
increasing, but concave, benefits curve; the benefits of exercise
rise, reach a peak, and then decline.
There is an optimum or a range of optima; to be below or above the
optimum range is harmful. Exercise beyond the optimal region is
destructive and dangerous. 6 METS is a good upper limit for
continuing activity. One can hit 8 or even 12 METS briefly in weight
training. The hormesis concept tells us that these very brief
stresses make us more able to tolerate the real stresses that life
brings.
Weight lifting shines for its benefits and low risk. Running can be
truly dangeous. Other aerobic endurance activities share the risks of
excessive running.
Your training should not be some long drawn out affair for
90minutes. A match or a fight does NOT last 140 minutes! (if it
did, you are doing something wrong). I remember when I was a kid an
my boxing coach made us run "1 mile for every round we are going to
fight". I don't need to tell you what a monumental waste of time
it is to jog/run for 3 miles to train for a BOXING match.
Train Hard, Get Done, go to the House.
I may write an article in the coming months entitled, "Why Running
Sucks" (to oversimplify).
Savate Boxe Franciase Seminar
with Armando Basulto
Dates:
Saturday and Sunday, Oct 20th and 21st, 2007
Location:
Modern Self Defense Academy
180 Johnson Street
Middletown, CT 06457
Equipment needed:
- Boxing Gloves (12oz or 16oz) no "bag gloves"
- Shoes (Savate or Boxing shoes or wrestling shoes)
- Focus Mitts (bring your own if you can)
- Mouthpiece
This seminar will cover the fundamentals of Savate, and you will
train in the same methodology used to train Savate boxers for the
ring. Footwork and movement, punch/kick combinations and training
methods will be detailed and drilled. You will have a taste of how
a Savate boxer trains! You will experience why this traditional
French martial art is referred to as "the art of boxing with the
hands and feet."

Moniteur Armando Basulto has trained, fought and coached Savate
boxers in the US and France and was a member of Team USA to the
Savate World Cup in France, 2000. He has coached US Teams to the
World Cup of Savate and his boxers have been some of the first
Americans to fight Savate BF in Europe.
In 2002, the Basulto Academy of Defense (TEAM BAD) was officially
paired with the Choisy-le-Roi Savate Club in Paris as a sister-club
to share training, information and boxers. Basulto Academy of
Defense is recognized by the French Federation of Savate (Paris,
France) and International Federation of Savate (Paris, France) as an
authentic source for Savate Boxe Francaise in the United States.
Currently Mr. Basulto is President of the North Carolina Savate
Federation.

If you get a chance, pick up the recent issue of "Real Fighter"
(issue No. 13) with Brandon Vera on the cover.
It features an article about the new generation of MMA-trainers and
our friend Erik Paulson is one of the coaches mentioned.
Y'all will remember what those weekend training sessions were like,
non-stop drills and techniques so that by Sunday the first thing we
did was partner-assisted stretching and massage.
Paulson's training perspective was probably the nearest to what our
TEAM BAD fighters did when preparing for a fight or meet (though our
fighters would say it was closer to the experience of being in a
Spartan agoge'!)
Also, this issue has an interesting piece about older fighters
(you'll see! You'll get there too some day!)

Some folks think it is too difficult to effectively conceal-carry
larger frame pistols like the 1911.
Here is an old training clip used my LEO's to learn about the
Filipino "Sparrow Hit Men". (Apprently, there are now Sparrow Hit
men in MS-13 and other large organized gangs).
http://s80.photobucket.com/albums/j200/DocDisasterHMC/?
action=view¤t=sparrow02final.flv
Notice the 1911 is not visible at all (skinny guy advantage?) He is
using his off-hand to push the barrel up to expose the grip; his
presentation looks well practiced to be that quick. True long range
Kali.
Don't believe for one minute you opponent/attacker does not rehearse
how to take you out.
It is a battle of wills!
Train hard and train smart....
At TEAM BAD we always set the bar high for training intensity and
training integrity.
Our philosophy was to not provide instruction in techniques
and "styles" but instead to provide immersion in diverse "training
experiences". Many of those training experiences and scenarios
required "full commitment" from participants. Every training
session was "student-centered" not "instructor-centered".
This demanded a lot of self-motivated dedication to a high level of
athleticism, even if only part of the time during training cycles.
Our unofficial mantra was "we'll provide the boat but you've got to
do the rowing".
Many people with best intentions were at times discouraged to find
out the commitment and hard work necessary for "real-world" fight-
survival skills.
I'd like to recommend a great article regarding "real-world" training
written by Ken Good, former Naval Special Warfare operator and head
of Strategos International, a top notcht training facility for
security professionals and private contract operators.
It is a long article, but well worth the read. I highly recommend
it.
Who is Training Whom?
"I have been in sort of an ongoing debate with some in the tactical
training community regarding the concept of "high level" training
verses "lowest common denominator training." High-level, being
defined as challenging, difficult, slightly beyond the trainees'
capability, type of training where everybody does not
necessarily "get it" right away; in some cases, never. Training that
could be considered steak instead of the disgusting, blended carrots
you spoon feed to a toddler……"

Interesting knife review....(you'll also find a BAD article on this
site).
Neil Roberts Warrior Knife A Year Later
In August of 2004, at the request of "Chief" Steven C. Bronson, I
wrote a review of the Neil Roberts Warrior Knife - and I did so
without abusing the knife as I usually do. I did that - and said that
was what I was doing right in the review - because the only knives I
had to test were the prototype and knife #1 which was the property of
Neil's widow, Patty. I wasn't about to abuse either of those blades.
At Bronson / TWO's 90MPH With My Hair On Fire Counter-Terrorism
Conference last August ('05) I met Chris Reeve, the maker of the Neil
Roberts knife. As a result of a raffle, I won one of the production
knives. At that point I had a knife that I could use and abuse and
not feel like I was committing a crime - so the abuse began.

Friends,
The forecast calls for a high of 77 degrees F with a 30% chance of
isolated precipitation, and we will be in great shape under the
shady shelter of the big pavilion at Brushy Creek. We hope to see
you there. Did you know that Dave Durch is a direct student of both
Dan Inosanto and Paul Vunak?
Dan, as you may know, studied martial arts under Bruce Lee and has
appeared in the cinema. Paul was rated as one of the top 20 street
fighters by "Black Belt" magazine recently. Here's your chance to
spend a day with Dave learning in a relaxed and friendly environment.

Hey guys I was just looking at my notes and my research on Killer
Instinct......and what found was people like Paul Vunak....
Tony Blauer are the leading experts....in this field....
So what I did was I created certain drills.....
1. Create a wish list and write them out on paper....they should follow the
lines that involve the aspects of
personal...passionate....desirable...pleasure...
2. Then you must meditate or listen to some trance relaxing drill...once you are
relax...you must review the wish list in your mind or mine...that is to point
they become one with one in you subconcious mind and concious mine......
3. Then you must visalize being relax then see one stilumil cuming at you then
just explode with rage......then relax ...something comes out explode with rage
...do this for about 2 two 3 minutes....( got this concept from Demi Barbito
videos..)
Check you guys out later............Relax .........??????????
