Does it not depend on the individual? I think it
does. Many of us began our training in martial arts for
the idea of self-preservation. I know I
did.

However as I have continued to train and evolve, I've
noticed that I'm not as concerned about the issue of
self-preservation as I once was. Why? Perhaps because I am more
secure in myself as a human being. Perhaps because my
ego has shrunken as a result of the countless hours
of "friendly" battle.

I see MANY reasons for
pursuing JKD and, the "Truth in combat"--self defense
being only ONE of them.

Certainly I like to
believe that the notion of JKD exists in the
"competitive" realm. I see no reason for it not to. The same
four ranges exist; the same concepts of interception,
of pressure, and of "termination". The "truth" still
exists, regardless of the "rules".

A street fight
after all, is an athletic afair. A "sportive" fight is
an athletic affair. Two different scenarios, sure.
The one commonality; an opponent fighting BACK.

I don't think we can "limit" JKD is ANY sense of
the word--whether we're talking sport OR
street!

Just my opinions.

John W. Kogas
