Your assistance would be greatly appreciated if you could help out with
some mowing and weed-eating at Roman Nose this coming Saturday. I'm
looking for 8 to 10 folks who can lend a hand in putting the finishing
touches to RN in prep for the upcoming race on June 12th and the summer
season in general. This is strictly a vegetation abatement event, no
dirt work involved.. Shouldn't take more than an hour or two, so make
sure you bring you bike so you can get in some riding as well. These
work hours WILL count towards your workhour totals and WILL count as
"paydirt" hours for you racer types.

If you can lend a hand, that would be great. Make sure to wear long
pants and long sleeves and have eye protection.
I'll be at the General Store at 9:30a.m on Saturday morn (June 4th),
with equipment, and plan to be hard at it by 10.

Thanks,
Ward

I saw that fawn yesterday too...couldn't have been over a few days
old...really tiny and cute! He/she was with the doe at the time.

John's pic on the double is pretty amazing. If only he had meant to do that:)
Great pics though John. If you roll across any more good ones let me know.

I being the king of el cheapo bikes past-can answer on this one.
When I first discovered Bluff Creek over 3 years ago, I had an old,
old hard-tail schwinn. It of course worked me bad with its all steel
frame.
I then discovered "Next" bikes at Wal-mart, and bought a full
suspension 60 dollar bike. It was also quite heavy-and I suffered
through flat tire after flat tire-strpped gears, etc. Bike lasted
less than a year. I graduated to the almost $100. Next bike, in its
pretty blue and silver color. Most of all, I graduated to a much
lighter aluminum frame. I started making it up hills I couldnt
before. But these bikes only lasted a little over a year before
gears were stripping out also (and broken shocks).
I know that most of this group is probably rolling with laughter
by now. Because I have been told so many times by my good intended
fellow bikers that if I was to get serious about mountain biking, I
should invest some money in a good bike. They ARE right. But not
everyone-especially me-can afford a $1,500. bike. I need repairs on
my personal car before I will pay that much for a bike.
Recently, I purchased a Schwinn S30 mountain bike with full
suspension for $250.00. The difference between the $250. Schwinn and
the cheapo next bikes are like night and day. The Schwinn is so much
better quality its unbelievable. Much better bearings all around. The
Shram shifting is superb. I took it to clearbay the day after I
bought it and flew through the woods. At this time, I am very very
satisfied with my Schwinn-which has a 1 year warranty by the way.
These guys all know what they are talking about-if you can afford
an expensive bike-get one. Dont waste your time or money on cheapo
wal mart bikes-you'll be the last one out of the woods everytime.
But for right now, Im satisfied with my Schwinn until I get my car
fixed up. Hope this helps

I went to the Tuesday in the trees ride tonight at 6 and nobody showed up.
The racers were finishing up their two hour training rides and I guess
everyone else thought it would rain so they stayed home. Well I went off
alone anyway and I am glad I decided to ride. The air was cool and the
trail was perfect. No bugs, no weeds and no sand. I was just crusing along
trying to pick perfect lines on a perfect trail and enjoying every minute
when about half way through the green I saw something on the trail that
looked like a jackrabbit. I dodged it and then stopped and got off the bike
and went back to look. There laying motionless on the trail was a little
fawn, still had all the white spots, probably didn't weigh over 20 lbs. I
thought he might be hurt so I got closer and when I was about 6 feet away he
jumped up and ran off. He was ok just trying to hide on the redish brown
trail which was the same color as him.

I continued on with my ride and when I loaded my bike about 7 it started to
sprinkle. I went home happy.

I went to walk NuDraper this evening.....trying to test a rain/wind
jacket for the first time. No such luck. :)

It only sprinkled for a bit, then stopped. There was a brief light
rain later. I stayed at the trailhead for awhile after my walk,
reading a book. When I left at 10:00ish there were still dry spots on
the road beneath some trees.

Can't speak for Bluff or Clearbay, but NuDraper and Anderson should
have absolutely perfect riding conditions tomorrow! GO!

Chris (p.s. - the deer are spunky with the moisture. Didn't see any
liger tracks, though, and it would have been ideal tracking weather.
They're probably hiding.....or relocating to Anderson!)

I noticed a lot of scratchs on the roots and rocks, so I guess Im not
the only one hitting them, lol. I used to ride motorcycles on hills
like that but im having trouble with the pedals. my foot slipped off
the pedal and kinda got hung up somehow, so now I have a sore foot to
deal with. I guess I just got to practice. I was wondering why people
take there kickstand off there bikes, is it to make them lighter? is
there anything else you can do to make a heavy bike lighter, other
than getting a new bike?

Where is Matt Fulks with his answers to everything when one asks? The
bikes powered by fossil fuels must have taken over him.

Tire pressures- I weigh 175. When I started riding 3 1/2 years ago, I
used 28 psi. As I got more daring(not better) I increased pressure to
help prevent the sidewall of the tire from folding over when
cornering. I now use 34 to 38 (depends on which trail I'm at), slower
or faster flowing trail will make a difference. Everyone has there own
preference/ experience. I also use a tire with less knobs (semi-
tread). The larger knobs usually have more give in the corners, like a
tire without enough air, but more bite in loose conditions. For me the
OKC trails have enough 'hardpack' trail bed to use a tire with less
tread.

That's been my personal testing and results.

i like hardtails these days, if you get the right frame (i like scandium) and
tire setup (hi-volume tubeless), you get a plenty comfy ride, and the lighter
weight will certainly help. full suspension will hook up better on the loose
stuff, that's a no-brainer, but if you have decent technique you can make just
about anything.

(all of this is dependent on keeping your tires from not flatting and keeping
you sub 3 pound frame from getting all bent up after being chased by Ligers into
a ditch at draper.)

Having a little momentum can't hurt. Learn where your trouble spots are and be
sure and get enough speed before going into them. Like Clifton said, time your
stroke so your pedals and crankarms won't contact root and rocks. The more you
ride, the better you'll get. The better you get, the sooner you'll be able to
climb stuff like that. I also find that it helps to stand there and watch
someone else climb it. Watch their speed and their technique...then copy.
Welcome to the best sport ever.

Don't sweat it, it's not like you're born knowing this stuff ... Where are you
riding at??? I would guess Turkey or Keystone.... It takes alot of practice and
you have to find that sweet spot on your bike were you can sit and spin to get
over those roots and stumps with out spinning out or losing your bite...

Sit on the nose of your saddle. shift your weight foreward just as you get over
the top of the obstacle and power into the pedal stroke. That will carry you
over just about any rock or root. Back pedal ever so slightly to clear rocks
and roots without bashing the cranks and stopping short. it requires that you
shift your weight foreward as you do it to carry momentum foreward during the
back pedal.

I will be hosting my basic mtn bike skills clinic in Cass, AR on june 26th. :)

Good point. A side note, if anyone is looking for a SUPER sticky rear
tire check out the Kenda Nevegal StickE rubber tire.

This thing sticks like no other tire I've ever used before, but beware
the StickE rubber rolls really slow compared to others. Its a
trade-off, but for technical climbing I haven't found anything that
comes close to this tire.

Its all about weight transfer and timing when climbing technical trails. A
light hardtail will outclimb almost any FS if you have the skill and power.

What do you guys think is the best bike for climbing hills? Is a hard

I agree with Brent, however I have found I personally seem to climb
technical stuff better on a full. It may just be technique, but I stay
seated on my dual squish and make it up some nasty technical climbs
that I don't get up on my HT.
