The 15th Annual 12 Miles of Hell has been approved for next year, Ft. Sill has
given final approval to hold the race at Letra on March 2nd and 3rd of 2002.
This is the weekend that works best for both our club and Ft. Sill. Fliers
should be out around January 19th, at the time I will update the website with
the flier and registration form. Online registration will again be at
Active.com.
Since 9-11 Ft. Sill has tighten security and has restricted access. This will
have a impact on 12 Miles. First, Ft. Sill is closed to all cycling and will
remain closed except for race weekend. Please don't try to come and pre-ride
before the race, you will have trouble getting on base and if you do get on, you
won't be able to get to Letra, all the roads are blocked.
There will be only one way on to Ft. Sill, the Letra gate off of highway 49,
http://www.12milesofhell.com/locate.htm When entering Ft. Sill you will need a
valid drivers license or military ID card, insurance card and vehicle
registration. You may be searched, no firearms, or anything else that might
land you in the brig. Searches may be conducted by military police and/or
police dogs. Allow yourself extra time.
As of right now the race course should be about the same as this years, this
year it was too wet to do the west side, next year we can't go west of Engineer
Pond, restricted area. If it is dry enough I do have plans to add a different
way out west for the start.
The road ride will go out the Letra gate and do a loop around Meers, Medicine
Park and back in the Letra gate, about 20-21 miles. Their will be no Tour of
the Wichita's in May, so this will be your only chance to ride a "Tour Ride" in
the Wichita Wildlife Refuge. However, the Refuge is open year round for all
kinds of road rides, come down any time to ride.
Runners will have their own t-shirts, a runner on the back instead of a mountain
biker.
Winners in the mountain bike race, men's and women's race will receive a winners
jersey. These will be our black 12 Miles of Hell jerseys we had made up earlier
in the year. Not sure what I will put on the right chest, "2002 Champion",
"2002 Winner", but it will have something. Front
http://www.12milesofhell.com/winners-front.jpg and back
http://www.12milesofhell.com/winners-back.jpg I have 6 jerseys left and are
for sale, anyone interested, email back. Cost is $45, I have 2 M(3), 2 L(4) and
2 XL(5).
12 Miles now has it's own web address at http://www.12milesofhell.com/, make
sure to check it out in the next few weeks for updates and all registration
information and forms. I'm slowly uploading the files and it may be a few more
days before all the links are working.
Ft. Sill has given approval and will support next years race, lets all come and
support Ft. Sill and our Armed Services. A portion of your entry fee will go to
Ft. Sill as it has in past years.
