When you near each hill, honestly evaluate how much of it you can
ride, and if you'll be walking most of it just dismount as soon as
the bike slows. A planned dismount is much easier and safer than one
from a power stall. Plus, you'll burn yourself out faster trying to
mash up everything. Give a few hard pedal strokes before you reach
the base, and then unclip one foot and swing it over the seat as you
come to a halt. Kinda cyclocross style. Watch out behind you, as I've
had people come up behind me as I swing my foot back. You don't want
to kick anyone.
> With this strategy in mind, you could actually run a little
bigger gear and tear up those tank trails. Just remember, there's no
shame in walking unless you have a 22t chainring. You can actually
walk faster than a lot of people will be riding. You'll figure this
out on the start hill. In reality, single speeds have 3 speeds. Sit,
stand and walk. Each have their proper place, use them wisely. Good
luck and have fun.
