Clifton and the Tulsa Freeriders:
I recently stumbled across your Tulsa Feeriders website "actually
through this post" and am impressed by the level of organization you
guys have with your group.
I've been riding Turkey Mountain off an on for 15 years and will be
the first guy to give a thumbs up for any kind of organization or
improvements to Turkey. I'm really not here to put a damper on any
of your trailbuilding creativity or hard work you guys have done, but
do you guys have permission? The freeriding area has gone from a few
jumps and obstacles to what it has become today. You guys really
aren't all that "Incognito" any more. The thing is, a lot of the
rideable area at Turkey Mountain I believe is still private property,
including, I think where you guys ride. That area of the park has
always had kind of a don't ask don't tell policy about it. The YMCA
uses that area of their property for hiking at their summer camp.
Their is no way those trails would stay beaten down for their
seasonal use without mountain bikers riding them. They know we are
there, I think they unofficially appreciate it, but don't call them
for money when your plow into one of their trees. Even on the River
Parks Authority property, it is "unoffically" illegal to build
trails.
With this in mind we all know that it has been the mountain bikers
that created most of these trails for the multi use function for
other groups such as equestrians, and hikers. Obviously the city has
taken notice to the popularity of this area due to the improvements
that they have made in the last few years and plans to expand their
property with the Vision 2025 deal. As we all know mountain biking
can be a dangerous sport and anybody can get hurt at any time, but
are you guys risking this area for all of us by building man made
obstacles on land that is the liability of another group or
individual by upping the ante on the dangerous scale? It's one thing
to crash into a tree that mother nature put their, but who holds the
responsibility for your roller coaster?
Just my 2 cents.
