There is still no word on who will be playing in this years'
Orioles Challenge Match. The Tennis Challenge is December 4th at the
First Mariner Arena. Feature match is Andy Roddick V. James Blake.
As soon as the Oriole match is announced, I will post it here and on
the Dude Site.
Alison
I looked on the tennischallenge.org and his name is not listed this
year. As far as I can tell, they didn't list anyone under the
Orioles Challenge section. It just says Orioles coached by Ravens.
As we all know, this is something he always participates in so you
may want to keep checking this site in the next few weeks to see if
he plays again this year.
The Portland Beavers released Brady in May. I haven't heard anything of him
since then.

According to this morning's Baltimore Sun, Brady is expected to
attend tonight's Orioles' Hall of Fame induction ceremony. Some guy
named Ripken is being honored. Ceremony starts at 6:30, before to
O's /Mariners game.
Hello everyone. As many of you know, Brady was released from the
Padres minor league system last month. A group of us have created a
petition we intend to send to the Orioles to have him back. It's a
long shot, but who knows. He is a talented leader and should be given
a chance. Please take some time to sign the petition and send it to
everyone you know. Even if you don't live in Baltimore, he deserves
the chance to play somewhere, right?

Thank you for your time!
Amy :)
I thought that article from the Pertland Tribune was amazing, I wroe
to Dwight and told him how much I appreciated the feedback. This is a
silly question, but does anyone know if Brady has a girlfriend?
Hi!
I never posted on here before, but I thought with the news about
Brady, it was time.
Is there a way to send our gratitude to Brady, as group, for his
dediacation to baseball? I think he would like to know that he is
still supported.
Thanks,
Janice

What was his crime? Well, he was 39
The worst thing about running a minor-league baseball team is that you
have no control over your roster. Players come and go at the whim of
the parent club. And if you're the Portland Beavers, there isn't much
you can do about it.
The good thing about minor-league ball is that most fans don't pay
much attention to rosters. They go to see family entertainment, root
for the guys with "Portland" on their shirts and get a free bobblehead
doll.
Good thing they don't care much. If they did, their hearts would have
been broken a couple of weeks ago.
That's when the Beavers — rather, the San Diego Padres — released
veteran outfielder Brady Anderson.
Not that he deserved it. His biggest crime was that he is 39 years
old. With that in mind, he was lucky to get a baseball job in the
first place. But as a Beaver, Anderson was terrific. He batted .294,
had a .455 on-base percentage and stole five bases. And that doesn't
tell half his story.
In the clubhouse, dealing with teammates barely over half his age,
Anderson was a mentor. A teacher. Someone who had hit 50 home runs in
a big-league season just a few years ago and had the time to spend
with young players. Time to help them learn how to be professional in
their approach and their attitude.
Yes, the story is going around that he took the entire team out to
dinner one night. Does it mean just a little more to know that they
had steaks at Morton's? Obviously, his teammates weren't a cheap date.
"He provided a lot of insight, leadership and nonquantifiable things
to the younger players," says Mark Schuster, general manager of the
Beavers. "He was a great leader on the club. He was someone the
younger guys could lean on. He makes your club better regardless of
what he does on the field."
So why was Anderson given his walking papers? That's easy — the Padres
are on a youth movement, and he doesn't fit into their plans. I mean,
you can lose 90 games with young guys — so you may as well. They play
cheap.
The Padres had claimed utility man Jermaine Clark off waivers from the
Texas Rangers and wanted him to come to Portland to play. So, there he
is, playing. And struggling to hit his weight.
"We want to get at-bats for our younger players," San Diego General
Manager Kevin Towers says. "We ended up keeping Brady longer than we
were going to — we were going to let him go after spring training, but
he asked to come to Portland, and we gave him 30 days to get his bat
going.
"We have to do what's best for our organization."
Agreed. But I think someone is missing something here. No matter how
good your managers and coaches are, players probably learn more from
peers than staff.
Somehow, I would have found a way to keep Brady Anderson around my
young players. These days, the San Diego organization can use all the
true pros it can find.
Sorry I forgot can't send pictures, they are in the Padres Album.

A friend and I had the opportunity to interview Brady a few days ago
before a Portland Beavers game. I thought it might be of interest to
the members here.
You can find the the interview at the "Unofficial Portland Beavers
Web Page" -- http://www.pdxbeavers.com. There is currently only one
photo posted from the interview, but I plan to post some others soon.

There are two new articles about Brady. You can find the links
on the Dude Site Articles page. I've also uploaded a new pic into the
Padres/Beavers folder.

Brady will be on the Beavers pregame show this weekend. Saturday's
pregame starts at 9:05pm EDT, Sunday's begins at 6:35 EDT. Haven't
heard which day he will be on. Here's the broadcast link

Anderson: Playing for Bevos is no minor deal
Former Oriole outfielder likely to be in left field in opener against
Tucson
By Kerry Eggers Issue date: 4/11/2003 The Tribune
Brady Anderson turns 40 in January. The three-time All-Star
outfielder played 14 seasons with the Baltimore Orioles. Few players
of his magnitude, at his age, would accept playing minor league baseball.
Anderson is different, in a very good way. He probably will be in
the Portland Beavers' lineup tonight for their 7 p.m. Pacific Coast
League home opener against Tucson at PGE Park, batting second and
playing left field.
"I don't find the minor leagues humbling," Anderson says. "Never
have. If you are sulking or thinking you are being treated unfair, you
are missing the point. You are playing pro baseball for a living. How
many people get to do that?
"I am on a personal quest to prove myself as a player, just like I
did when I was initially in the minors. Maybe I can enjoy it a little
more this time. The interaction with my teammates is probably the most
refreshing thing I have experienced this spring. It has not been about
a big-leaguer to minor-leaguers. It is about teammate to teammates as
equals."
No wonder Beaver Manager Rick Sweet has found Anderson almost too
good to be true as a person and team leader.
"He is very professional, a very hard worker, and he has been very
good with the young players," Sweet says. "I mean everything from
telling stories to showing them how to go about your business and how
to play the game."
Anderson has 210 home runs in the majors, and 50 came during a
glorious run in 1996, when he hit .297 with 110 RBIs, 117 runs scored
and 21 stolen bases as Baltimore reached the American League
Championship Series. Before that year, Anderson had never hit more
than 21 homers in a season; since then, he has never hit more than 24.
A year to remember
Anderson set a franchise record in '96 for homers and extra-base hits
and a major league record for homers by a leadoff hitter. He also
became the only player to have both 50 homers and 50 steals in a
season and one of three players (Ken Griffey Jr. and Willie Mays are
the others) with 50 homers and 20 steals in the same season.
"I had a decade of hitting leadoff to compare with most any leadoff
hitter who ever played, but that one year is what people want to talk
about," Anderson says.
"My explanation is, it is just another example of the fine line
between success and failure at a high level. The difference between 25
and 50 home runs is so slight you can hardly tell. You are hitting one
more home run a week. In other words, it is one more good swing per
week for six months. With that comes the confidence that will propel
you to greater things.
"The weird thing is, it wasn't one of my healthiest seasons. I had
appendicitis midway through the season, and they wanted to take my
appendix out. I pulled my quad, and for nine weeks I didn't have a
stolen-base attempt. I was pretty banged up, but my swing was there
from Day One of spring training. I had seven homers that spring, and
my swing never left me."
In spring training the next season, Anderson cracked a rib. He
wound up playing 151 games, batting .288 with 18 homers.
"I had to compensate and alter my swing a little," Anderson says.
"And it kind of stuck. I have had solid years since, but nothing like
that year."
Goodbye to Baltimore
After the 2001 season, in which he hit .202 with eight homers in 131
games, Baltimore gave Anderson his release. Last year, he signed a
free-agent deal with Cleveland but hit just .163 with one homer and
five RBIs in 34 games before being released in May. He then injured an
Achilles' heel playing basketball and sat out the season.
The 6-1, 200-pound left-hander signed last December with the San
Diego Padres.
"They were the first ones to contact me," Anderson says. "(General
Manager) Kevin Towers is a very straight talker. My family lives in
San Diego. It was a pretty simple decision."
Anderson might have been able to stay on as an extra bat and
outfielder with the Padres. He felt it was better for him to play
every day at the Triple-A level with Portland.
"When I spent my first four years with the Orioles platooning and
not having a regular spot in the lineup, I made up my mind I never
wanted to watch another game from the bench," he says.
"When I'm at my best, I am out there every single day, through
slumps, through everything. For me to get the right feel, I need to
play a lot. Plus, there is a joy I get playing. It doesn't matter the
level."

Anderson, Kelly Fail to Make Padres
.c The Associated Press
PEORIA, Ariz. (AP) - Outfielders Brady Anderson and Roberto Kelly
failed to make the San Diego Padres as non-roster invitees.
Kelly, 38, asked for and was granted his release as the Padres broke
camp on Thursday. Anderson, 39, accepted assignment to Triple-A Portland.
The Padres chose to carry only five outfielders, including Shane
Victorino, who must remain on the big-league roster all season or be
offered back to the Los Angeles Dodgers.
``I understand the situation,'' Anderson said.
Anderson is attempting to revive his career after batting .163 for
Cleveland last season and getting released in May. He did not seek
another job after his release because he sustained an Achilles' injury
while working out on his own.
But he said he felt good this spring, despite a .196 batting average,
and wants to continue to play.
``I feel great,'' he said. ``I felt comfortable enough at the plate.
I'm running and throwing well.''
The Padres loaded up veteran non-roster invitees like Kelly, Anderson
and pitcher Charles Nagy. But infielder Keith Lockhart was the only
one to stick. The Padres will give him a major league contract before
the season starts.
The only undecided roster spot is the backup catcher, where Wiki
Gonzalez and Michael Rivera are the options behind starter Gary
Bennett. It could go to Rivera by default since Gonzalez has missed
several days with back problems that manager Bruce Bochy said could
require a trip to the disabled list.
Bochy selected right-handed rookie Clay Condrey to be the No. 5
starter, relegating rookie left-hander Mike Bynum to the bullpen.
Coming into camp, it appeared the final starting spot would go to
either Francisco Cordova or Kevin Jarvis. But Cordova posted an 11.66
ERA and was released, and Jarvis did not recover from last season's
elbow surgery and was placed on the disabled list.
Condrey, 26, was 1-2 with a 1.69 ERA in nine games, including three
starts, last season. He went 10-4 with a 3.50 ERA in 25 games at
Portland to earn the promotion.
``We hope Clay makes 30, 35 starts for us this year,'' Bochy said.
``He's got four pitches, he's got command and he competes very well.''

Actually, it's a Men's Fitness magazine (the one that has the B&W photo on the
cover). I think it's from the Summer of 2001. I have it at home, if it's
really important that you know exactly.

I uploaded the shots I have of Brady as a Padre to the FILES section
so that the group can enjoy the full size files.
Does anyone have the third shot that s/he can upload into FILES as
well?
I've uploaded the only other photo I've seen of Brady in a Padres
uniform. It's also in the photo section.
