Dear Boathouse volunteer:
This Saturday, July 26th, is City of Water Day, a convergence of events
happening on Governors Island, with paddlers from various groups in the area
paddling to the Island for the day. The Boathouse is leading a trip of 10
pre-registered volunteers with an equal number of public. This will replace the
regular Saturday morning trip. Please note that due to the nature of this trip
and the need for us to pre-register volunteers with the Waterfront Alliance and
Coast Guard, only the 10 volunteers the Boathouse has already signed up can go
on this trip. WMA has closed the registration so we cannot add any other
volunteers at this point. If you’d like to participate in the events on the
Island, you can take the ferry. For more information see
http://www.waterwire.net/~waterfr1/?q=node/45.
*****************
As the weather gets hotter, we get busier, which means that we’re often
short-handed, especially at 72nd Street. Even if you can only volunteer for a
couple of hours, please consider coming to any of our locations to give your
fellow volunteers a break from the heat or a break for lunch, or to help open
and close. If there are enough volunteers at pier 96, please consider going up
to 72nd street. We are also running a limited walk-up paddling program on
Governors Island, though we’ll probably not be able to run it this weekend given
how busy the dock will be.
*****************
New volunteer paddles are continuing Tuesday and Sunday evenings from Pier 96
following the public program. These are easy and short (1-2 hour) paddles aimed
to help our newer volunteers build up their skills and confidence on the river.

Dear Boathouse Volunteer
First I would like to thank everyone for helping out over the memorial day
weekend. For the first time in a number of years the weather was great for all 3
days. All 3 locations mostly had lots of volunteers and we put hundreds of
people on the water who all had a great time. So Thanks to everyone for helping
out and I hope people had a good time as well.
**********************
We could still use some extra help at 72nd both for opening, closing and to
during the day to make sure people get a chance to take a break.
We would like to suggest that if there lost of people at Pier 96, Say 6 or more,
people or a couple of people should take a bike ride up to 72nd, just for an
hour, or so or if the currents are right paddle a drifter up or have two people
take up a double and use it in the program up there for an hour or so. Thanks
**********************
We have pretty high demand for lockers for volunteers at Pier 96. The volunteer
lockers are located by the east door and between the private boat slots. We are
trying to get a few more lockers. Until we get more no one should be using more
that one locker.
There are also a number of lockers without names and we don't know who is using
these. If your name isn't on your locker please put it on the locker. In a
couple of weeks, any lockers that have no name on them will have the locks cut
off the contents removed, and they will be assigned to the active volunteers
waiting for lockers.
if you have locker without a name on it. and for some reason can't get to the
boathouse in the next few weeks. Let us know where and what kind of lock so we
don't cut the lock off.
**********************
We are going to start our short new volunteer paddles again from Pier 96. These
will be short, about an hour or 2, paddles aimed at new volunteers getting some
experience on the river. All are welcome. We will aim to launch the first one on
Sunday June 1st, after the public program is over at 6. We expect people to
take the decked in boats and not sit on top boats. You do not need to be on the
authorized boat user list.
If you are unqualified or uncomfortable in decked boat let us know and we will
work on training and comfort. This trips are, of course weather permitting.
If you are interested in leading these new volunteer trips let us know

early in the season.

Trash bags provided by the Hudson River Trust. They won't collect it otherwise.

DELAWARE RIVER SPRING TRIP '08
This year's trip will be modified to accommodate the
Down Town Boathouse Volunteers and their guests.
I'm planning a trip on New York's other big river, the Delaware, on Saturday and
Sunday, May 3rd & 4th. We will start from Lackawaxen PA, on Sat. morning at 9:00
am sharp, immediately following a safety briefing at 8:30 am. We will travel
down stream to Sparrowbush, NY (22 miles - 4 hours float time). The higher the
river, the faster it is, so it may take less time to finish than at normal river
levels.
At this time of year the river is very swift and cold consisting of 7-8 sets of
class 1&2 rapids, so wet or dry suits are a must as well as extra paddles, PFDs
and spray skirts. Throw ropes, tow ropes, VHF radios and whistles are also a
good idea. For the safety of all novices, we will generally take a line of
descent out of the most severe rapids, but those who are advanced will be
allowed in the large standing waves. In addition, there will be a safety meeting
before launching as well as a brief before each set of the different rapids.
There are rocks in the river, which we will do our best to avoid so, a plastic
boat is preferable to wood or glass. I use a 17 foot sea kayak. The scenery
beautiful! We have seen many bald eagles and other wildlife on the trips
throughout the years, so bring your cameras.
Drive time from the GWB is 2 hours to northernmost point, which is Narrowsburg,
NY.
SAT. DIRECTIONS
Meet 8:00 am Sparrowbush
We will be meeting in Sparrowbush, NY. Take the Palisades Parkway north, to I-87
north, to Rte. 17 west, to I-84 west, to the Port Jervis exit, follow Rte. 6
west through town. Then, take Rtes. 97/42 North.
Routes 97/42 eventually split. Stay on 97. Just past the 97/42 split, look for a
small wooden sign which reads - SPARROWBUSH, NY STATE FISHING ACCESS. Make a 45
degree left at that sign onto a street called Hook Rd. Follow down to the end.
Here, we will need to transfer kayaks and gear and leave some vehicles in order
to retrieve those transport vehicles, which will be left 22 miles upriver.
We will then proceed North on 97 to the Roebling Bridge and turn left over the
bridge. At the end, make a right turn and follow road around to the Zane Grey
Museum. The launch is directly in front. There is a deli nearby to obtain
breakfast or lunch and to use their facilities.
SUN. DIRECTIONS
Meet 8:00 am Narrowsburg
Follow paragraph one above. Stay on 97 North, past the Roebling Bridge. Follow
signs for Narrowsburg (at blinker, leave 97 and bear left for Rte. 652). Just
past the only traffic light, look for the Tusten Theater and turn right at the
Landers Campground sign (across from Chinese restaurant). If you cross over the
Delaware, you've gone too far. We will have a shorter trip on Sunday to be
determined.
Bring your camp gear if you want to camp Sat. eve in Narrowsburg, at Landers
Campgrounds. This will be our base of operations. They have a 3-sided, wooden
lean-to for around $18/person (tents OK, but not needed). Contact them at
845-252-3925 from 9-5 or 24/7 at:
www.landersrivertrips.com
Please RSVP - ASAP by phone Home (845) 352-0162 Cell: (914) 374-7954 or e-mail

proper gear and have advanced or intermediate experience to do this trip. Join
at your own risk.
Hope to see you there!
