Dear Boathouse Volunteer

***********************
I meet Freya during the first Storm Gathering, which was held in Scotland this
is a rare opportunity to hear about a remarkable expedition.

In January 2009 Freya Hoffmeister, a 46-year-old kayaker from Husum, Germany,
set out to paddle around a continent in a sea kayak. In December of that year,
322 days and over 8500 miles later, she had completed a solo circumnavigation of
Australia, considered one of, if not the most challenging endeavors in the world
of sea kayaking. Many other kayakers have attempted the circumnavigation since
Paul Caffyn did it 27 years ago, but all of them stopped well short of the goal.
Freya?s ?Race Around Australia? was completed in record time and established her
as the first woman to complete the journey.

What made it so formidable? Huge saltwater crocodiles, great white sharks,
venomous sea snakes and deadly jelly fish, massive surf, the challenge of
coordinating freshwater and food dumps, three 100-mile stretches of sheer cliffs
without any landing zones and dangerous cyclones were some of the most daunting
threats. As an extra challenge she made an 8-day, 7-night crossing of the
350-mile-wide Gulf of Carpentaria. In spite of the physical toll of paddling in
the tropical heat Freya averaged upward of 35 miles per day for nearly a year.

Join us for Freya's live talk and slide presentation, "Race Around Australia" at
the Picnic House on the southwest corner of Pier 40 (West Houston & West St.) in
Hudson River Park at from 5:30 to 8PM on Tuesday, June 29. The presentation will
start at 6PM. There will be time for Q&A after the talk.

Admission is $25. Proceeds will be divided between Freya, to defray expenses,
and Friends of Hudson River Park ? a non-profit organization dedicated to
protecting, completing, and sustaining the entire Hudson River Park through
advocacy, coalition building, and fundraising.

Our friends at NY Kayak Company are having a Downtown Boathouse volunteer sale
all this week, through this weekend (6/27/10). All items not previously marked
down will be 10% off for Downtown Boathouse volunteers. Just say you heard it on
the volunteer email. So go to NY Kayak Company (Pier 40, 1-800-529-2599) and
stock up on lights, get a new pfd or paddle, or get that rash guard, shorts, or
pair of paddle shoes you've been wanting because let's face it, the ones you
have are getting really funky. Plus, you'll be supporting our local kayak shop.
Thanks, Randy.

Have fun see you on the water

Mark you calendar, The Harrison Street Regatta, our annual party and fun race

an annual tradition at the Boathouse that includes a free, fun race of any and

compete. Once the sign-up is complete, access to the boathouse will be
restricted to those present. So come early and stay late! There will be food

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

A couple of things.

We are continuing our Wednesday classes at Pier 96. They are very popular and
usually oversubscribed. They are on a first come first serve basis and there are
a limited number of slots available.
The classes are listed on the calendar at:
http://downtownboathouse.org/calendar.html

If you are an active volunteer and want to take one of the classes, you can get
in touch with the instructor to make sure you get in. If you do not know how to
get in touch with the instructor email volunteer@....
HOWEVER, if you are want to be guaranteed a place in the class, you MUST show up
by 5PM and help with the wednesday public program before the class starts.

***********

On a similar note. We are continue to run New Volunteer trips on most Tuesday
and Fridays after the public program. All are welcome. These paddles are aimed
at new volunteers and are typically an hour or two at most to get people some
experience on the river.

If you want to go on these paddles you must show up early and help open, run and
close the public program.
***********

On a lighter note, On August 21st, from 10:30AM until 4PM. There is kite flying
display/contest on Pier I on the upper west Side.
see:
http://www.nycgovparks.org/sub_things_to_do/events/output_pages/flyny.html
for details.
Some of these kites are quite elaborate.
We are looking for a few people to be in the water to rescue kites that may land
in the river.
Please note that Pier I is not perpendicular to the shore and in strong tides
can be a dangerous place to paddle around so we are only looking for more
experienced paddlers for this event.
If you are interested email us at volunteer@...

We still can use some help for the Kid's Programs this summer!
Our next one is Ronald Mcdonald house kids at 8:30AM on August 16

few weeks in September but as it is getting darker earlier, and there is no
more evening program at Pier 96, will start at 6PM instead of 7.

These paddles are aimed at new volunteers. They are typically less than 2 hours
at a moderate pace. These paddles are aimed at getting new volunteers some
experience on the river.

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

Our weekday evening public paddling program at Pier 96 has ended for this
season. Starting this week we will only be open on weekends for the rest of the
season, although we still have a few Wednesday night classes scheduled at Pier
96. Thanks to everyone who helped out, we couldn’t run our free public programs
without our great volunteers!

Pier 40 will remain open on Thursday evenings from 5PM-7PM as well as weekends
9AM-6PM.

72nd St will be open on weekends only, 10AM-5PM.

All locations will be open this Labor Day weekend, including on Monday, Labor
Day. Check the website for updates. It promises to be a beautiful and busy
holiday weekend, so we’ll need lots of volunteers!

but these will be announced.

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

It is now officially Autumn. There is often a slight chill in the mornings and
evenings, although the water is still quite warm.
The days are shorter and so we are starting to wrap up our season. There are
only 4 weekends left in our public program. We still need people to com out and
help at all our locations, especially in the mornings. We know it is harder to
get going in the mornings late in the season and we appreciate people's efforts.

***********

As of Friday September 24th we are wrapping up our evening new volunteer
paddles. It is now dark too early and there often a chill in the evening air.
Thanks to everyone who helped this program be so popular and successful. We
will still have 2 more Wednesday night classes at Pier 96, but they are dry land
classes held in the boathouse.

***********

Next Thursday, September 30th is the last day of the Thursday evening paddles at
Pier 40 for the season.
This has been a very popular program, and again thanks to everyone who came by
to help out on Thursday evenings
Pier 40 will still be open for the next 4 weekends from 9AM until 6PM, weather
permitting

***********

Our last monthly public meeting for the season will be Tuesday, October 5th at
6:30PM, come by at 6 to catch up

***********

Our Closing day this Year is Sunday, October 17th. We are expecting a group of
kids from the Boys club to show up in the morning, around 10 or 11 ( weather
Permitting- last year October 17 was 48 degrees and raining). there will be
enough guardians, but we could use lots of volunteers to come down and help.

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

There are only 2 weekends left in our public programs. Our last public program
is Sunday October, 17th,
This Monday is Columbus day (Also Canadian Thanksgiving), We hope to be open at
all three locations, weather permitting for the full day on Monday, So if you
are around on Monday come down and help out. The weather is supposed to be nice
this weekend, if a little cold in the mornings.
We know it is harder to get going in the mornings late in the season and we
appreciate people's efforts to get to our locations in the mornings

***********

The group of kids from the Boys club expected for the 17th in the morning has
been rescheduled for next season.

***********

After the 17th we will be having a cleanup day at all 3 locations. The dates and
times will be announced after the 17th. As part of the cleanup will will be
emptying the refrigerators and the day use lockers. If you have anything in a
refrigerator you don't want thrown away, take it home or eat or drink it. If you
have a lock on one of the lockers at Pier 40 or 96 marked for day use ONLY,
remove everything and the lock. In addition any old clothes or shoes or bags
that are just lying around should be collected .
Thanks for your cooperation

***********

And just a reminder about weather and water temperature. The sun is going down
earlier, the air gets cold quickly when the sun goes down, especially if the
wind is blowing. The water temperature is in the mid 60's already and will fall
pretty quickly ( Last year between Oct 6 and 17 the water fell 7 degrees
Fahrenheit). So if you are paddling be sure to check weather carefully and dress
appropriately.

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

The Boathouse season ended almost a month ago. We hope everyone is having a nice
autumn. We have counted nearly all the waivers and will post the numbers for
this year soon. We wouldn't be able to have done any of this without all the
volunteers who help out and make our programs possible.

We will be having our end of year party on Thursday December 2, 2010 to say

usual. We will post more details soon.

experience with cold water and appropriate clothing.

Because of repeat visits by the same person, the total number of persons going
kayaking is more than double the number of waivers signed each year. Thus the
Downtown Boathouse has launched more than HALF A MILLION persons since we
started.

Thank you again.

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

Happy New Year

We hope everybody had a good holiday season and is managing to stay warm.
The boat house is closed for the season, of course, but there are some things
that need to get done in the winter so our 2011 season can be a success.

Graeme Birchall will be running our first work day for the year at Pier 96 on
Sunday Jan/23 from 10am to 4pm. Various racks and other structures are to be
demolished and rebuilt. The work will go on, rain or shine. All are welcome,
but if you are coming you should be prepared to swing a hammer and possibly get
seriously dirty. The boathouse will be closed all day, so just bang on the big
back door if you do not have a key.

You can show up whenever, but if you plan to come please send Graeme a note at
Graeme_Birchall@....

Thank you

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

The weather is starting to warm up and it looks like winter may be losing its
grip on New York.

However, we would like to remind everyone, that the water remains deadly cold.
It is still below 40 degrees. No one should be paddling without proper gear and
training. It should be remembered that it is not pemitted to use any Downtown
boathouse boats in the river out of season.

In Addition, there is a lot of construction work going on in the off season at
Pier 96 to get ready for the summer, which will make the boathouse very
congested and a litlle hazardous until it is completed. If you are interested
in helping conact graeme at graeme_birchall@...

In another sign that winter is ending the Paddlesport Expo in Somerset New
Jersey is coming up on March 25th, 26th and 27th see:

http://www.jerseypaddler.com/paddle-sport.html

This is the largest Canoe and Kayak show on the east coast. There is the
possiblity of a bus being run from New York down to the show and back on either
Saturday or Sunday, if there are enough people committed to going, If you are
interested. Please get in touch with Lee Reiser at lee060@...

Dear Boathouse Volunteer;

We will be having another work day at Pier 96 this coming Sunday March/27. Feel
from to come and help out, but if you do, expect to get seriously dirty, so
dress appropriately. The work starts at noon and goes until 4pm, but come any
time. If you do not have a key, just bang on the big back door. We will work,
rain or shine.

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

Tonight's 6PM class, an introduction to the Boathouse, its goals and programs
has been cancelled due to the poor weather moving in. Although, this is an
indoor class. We expect most people would have a difficulty getting comfortably
to the Pier 96 boathouse this evening. We will reschedule this.

********************

Last Saturday was our opening day. Thanks to everyone who came down and helped
out. Given the weather we actually did prettty well. Due to the Poor Weather
Forecast, 72nd Street did not open. We expect all three locations to be open
this weekend. At this point, the weather looks like it may cooperate.

********************

Pier 96 got cleaned up a lot last week, the rugs were moved cleaned and
vacuumed, we got rid of some of the old ragged things. Thanks to everyone who
made the efforts.
There are a lot of items still littering up the locker area. We would like all
these things put away. If you have a locker or boat, put everything away ,
either in the locker or boat. If you don't have a locker or a boat but have
stuff sitting on top of a locker, take it home. Anything left out at the end of
the month will be moved and may be thrown away. Thanks for your cooperation in
trying to keep Pier 96 clean.

FYI , Hoboken is strarting its Public Kayaking programs at Maxwell House Beach.
Their first day is June 4th from 9 to 2.
All their days are listed on their website at:

Dear Boathouse Volunteer;

It looks like we are going to have a long hot weekend with beautiful weather.
All three Downtown Boathouse locations in Manhattan will be open on all three
days, and we anticipate large crowds. We will need many volunteers, so please
come and help out if you can. Come any time. Leave any time. Any help will be
most appreciated:

- Pier 40, Houston St.
- Pier 96, 56th St.
- 72nd St. Riverside Park.

This week is Fleet Week. It impacts us inasmuch as all of our Manhattan
locations are in or close to a security zone. Please do NOT go kayaking in a
proscribed area this weekend. Security will be very tight.

To learn more about Fleet Week, check the following website:

Hi folks,
We have some dates and times for children's programs this summer!
There will be more, I am sure. But this is what it looks like as of now.
If you can help-that's great. Just let me know at dragonsandy1@...
We need folks to show up about a half hour before the kids programs start to
help set up. Some of these groups are short on time-so I have the boats out and
ready to go for them.
And...unfortunately-we took quite a hit this winter.
Many folks that would usually have helped us out during the weekdays are now
injured...some others moved...or got 9-5 jobs...etc.
Here is our schedule so far.
If the weather acts up of course things will change on these.
Always check the email before....
The Ronald McDonald kids are from 11:30 am-3:00 pm June 19th and August 9th..
If they get rained out-we have set aside rain dates for them.
Tuesday June 19th. (Raindate is Thursday June 21st))
Tuesday August 9th. (Raindate is Thursday August 11th)

The Harlem School kids will be every Friday at 10 am for the month of July.
They are on the water for only about 1 hour.
Their dates are...
July 1st, 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th.

We also have the St. Francis College group of teenagers coming on July 28th.
Most likely around 10:30 am-11 am. They stay about 2 hours.
Let me know if you can help. The kids programs can be quite sweet really.
Thanks!

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

Next Monday is July 4th Holiday. Once again they are having the fireworks on the
Hudson River. This impacts our programs in the following ways:
Our Pier 96 boathouse is the main zone for the fireworks, Although officially
they do not close the river until 7 PM , in the past the police have typiclly
ordered all boats off the water in our ebayment by noon. In addition it becomes
crowded enough that the police tyically close access to Clinton Cove Park (where
the boathouse is) by early afternoon. Because of this Pier 96 will NOT be open
on July 4th for any public programs and there is no 8 am morning trip.

72nd St is in a location reserved for observation boats. Boats tyically begin
moving in early the afternoon which makes running a program difficult, and we
many be shut down, In addition crowds moving into Riverside Park and Riverside
south make puting the equipment away , very inconvenient. As a result 72nd St
will NOT be open on July 4th.

Pier 40 is at the southern end of the boat observation area. Typically there is
not a huge impact. Pier 40 WILL open July 4th with the following possible
issues: We can expect a visit by the police and coast gaurd investigating our
operation. If you are appoached, explain that no kayaks go out in the river and
all boats will be off the water by 6PM. The police may close the walkway and
Pier 40 early, if crowds begin to gather. The north side of Pier 40 and the roof
attact observers, typically they closed pier 40 aroud 7PM

Dear Boathouse Volunteer:

We have a busy week coming up:

- July 2, Saturday we are open on Governors Island
- July 4, Monday we are "possibly" closed everywhere
- July 5, Tuesday we have our monthly meeting
- July 6, Wednesday we have a TV crew coming
- July 7, Thursday we have a CPR class (full)

Now for the details:

On Saturday July 2 we are running free kayaking on Governors Island from 10am to
approximately 4pm. If you can come by and help out, it would be great. We
especially need people who can show up at 2:30 or 3pm and stay to help us close
up.

On Monday July 4 we are definitely closed at both Pier 96 and 72nd St. We have
traditionally been open all day at Pier 40 on July 4, but this year we have
received communication from the NYPD that they may want to close us down at
noon. We will probably play it as it goes - unless we hear more.

On Tuesday July 5 we are having our monthly volunteer meeting at Pier 96 (at
56th St.). All are welcome. The meeting starts at 6:30pm, but the boathouse
will be open at 5pm for the public program. There will be a short introduction
for new volunteers after the main meeting.

On Wednesday July 6 Telemundo TV will be popping in at 3:30pm to take pictures
of our free kayaking program. Volunteers are welcome to come, and they are
especially welcome to go kayaking. Make sure you wear your best digs...

On Thursday July 7 we have a free CPR class for volunteers. The class is
currently over-booked. So if you have signed up and you need to cancel PLEASE
let us know. Send an email to Tatiana at tatiana@....

Thanks everybody for their support.
