Thanks....but now the boathouse will have no one.... June 27th Coney Island
Hi folks. I appreciate the support, really. And t know the Coney Island things
are fun-but--like-----everyone-- wants to jump ship that day and paddle around
in Coney. We are going to do another one-called Grimaldi's mile-on August 9th.
So--we are going to split up the group because it is an abnormally popular trip!
So we are asking a few folks to switch to the next Coney trip. They'll be no one
to work the boathouse.
If you feel like you can do the August 9th trip, instead-please do.
If you have not done the Coney Island trips ever---we will try to keep you on
the June 27th. We are keeping a group of very trained types on there for both
days though. I have a huge truck-and I am starting to wonder if it will explode
w boats.
The Swim Support classes for the June 27th Coney Island Cibbows Swim will take
place at the DTBH, Pier 96 at 7:00PM on Thursday, June 25th
Please attend if you are going to do the swim support.

Here is More info on the une 27 Coney Island Swim Support:
Hello. I am rounding up many, many kayakers for this lovely Coney Island
Aquarium 5K Swim on June 27th.
It's the Cibbows group. And let me tell you. These Cibbows guys are way fun.
I really enjoy their events. It's a great day on the ocean. One of the nicer
swim supports.
I am collecting a slew of kayakers this time because they want the swimmers
watched pretty carefully.
And--- it is----a very early morning gig, this swim support.
They want the kayakers at the beach in front of the Aquarium in Coney Island at
5:45 am! We will truck DTBH boats out-or feel free to cartop your own.
But...it is a worthy journey.
They feed us well.
They give out great goodie bags. (luv their shirts and bags)
We get to go surfing.
We picnic on a lovely beach.
And----- this time --they threw in a nice little party at the Aquarium.
The race starts and ends there. Folks can park in the Aquarium parking lot there
in Coney Island that morning
If you feel like helping out--please contact me back channel...
I just have to work out the logistics, get your shirt size, get a head count,
and know if you will attend the Aquarium party--or go surf and picnic at the
other beach spot.
(Tough decision-I know...) Here is the Cibbows description of their event
below...
Thanks!
Sandy Sobanski
dragonsandy1@...
On June 27th, 2009, at 7am, approximately 150 swimmers will jump into the ocean
for the inaugural Coney Island 5K and New York Aquarium Mile, a pair of
open-water races to be held at Coney Island.
The 5k race will draw an international field of elite swimmers, including
several who have swum the English Channel, Catalina Channel, around Manhattan,
and other formidable swims. Braving currents, cold water, chop, jellyfish, and
fierce competition, they will swim a 3.2-mile circular course to the end of
Brighton Beach, the Coney Island Pier, and back to the Aquarium.
Concurrently, there will be a one mile event for swimmers of all ages and
abilities. The New York Aquarium Mile will have a diverse cross-section of
swimmers from the Tri-state are of all ages and abilities--some of whom will be
getting their feet "wet" for the first time.
CIBBOWS and the New York Aquarium co-host the event, which will be followed by
festivities at the Aquarium that include music, food, award ceremony, and fun at
the aquarium.
We need kayakers and volunteers, so come out and join the fun! Come for
Nathans! The Cyclone! The Wonder Wheel! Russians in their underwear! Ruby's
on the boardwalk (where you'll find the race organizers after the hoopla!) Or
hang at the aquarium and commune with the seals. So many options! Conact Sandy

On May 9 we have scheduled a CPR certification class for Downtown Boathouse
volunteers. The class will be held at Pier 96 from 10am-1pm. This will be a CPR
only class (not CPR + First Aid as last season's) as the CPR certification must
be renewed annually whereas the First Aid certification is good for two years.
We will offer the two class combo again next season (or sooner if there's a
demand for it). If you have not picked up your certification cards from last
year's class please see Taino.
The class is free though if you have not already and are able, this might be a
good time to renew your Boathouse membership to help us offset some of the costs
of the class. If you would like to take the class you MUST REGISTER for it by
sending an email to taino@.... Please be sure that you will

Although the air temperature this weekend is expected to be 80 degrees, please
remember that the water is still very cold (below 55 degrees). This is the time

There is no paddling from any of the Boathouse locations (this includes paddling
in the embayment) without first contacting Taino. This is still drysuit season
and we are shortly approaching wetsuit season (above 55 degrees). For more

Dear Boathouse Volunteer
AN IMPORTANT REMINDER!
Our season approaches we hope to see everyone back soon, but remember that even
though the air is getting warmer, the Water will remain dangerously cold for a
couple of months. NO ONE should be be paddling without proper cold gear, aka a
dry suit and cold water training. A wet suit will not provide enough protection
at these temperatures.

From Ted Gruber
Greetings to all !
Please, save the date, March 12. 2009.
Long Island City Community Boathouse requests the pleasure of your company at
our winter 2009 fundraiser party. We're working hard to create an extraordinary
event that will put winter behind us, herald the coming of spring and celebrate
the (almost) first anniversary of the New York City Water Trail.
A wide variety of food, beverages, entertainment, prizes and surprises will
complement the good company of friends and guests of honor from around our
harbor. It's come as you are casual in a unique and intimate venue.
When paddling season arrives, LICCB will open our new location on Anable Basin.
Suggested donations, sponsorships and proceeds from raffle and silent auction
and will fund the launch site improvements needed to be ready for opening day.
Party is set for Thursday, March 12th from 6:00 until 9:00 PM at The Foundry on
ninth street, half a block south of the Queensboro bridge in LIC.
Please plan to be part of this enjoyable and memorable event and support the
good work of the all volunteer, not for profit Long Island City Community

Downtown Section of the Hudson River Park-Saturday May 9th
CLOSING RIVER CLEANSING CEREMONY & WATER DANCE:
The Water Dance of Boats highlights the ceremony with kayaks, canoes and
rowboats, from the Village Community, Downtown Boathouse, and NY Kayak Company,
festooned with giant elemental river masks and floating marine life sculptures,
by dancer/choreographer/ costume artist, Alice Farley. They participate in a
visually spectacular choreographed movement on the river, accompanied by a Fish
Sound Symphony, composed by the French Musician/Singer, Gregori Czerkinsky,
incorporating fish sounds recorded off Lower Manhattan by Marine Field Station,
The River Project. In conclusion, David Hykes and The Harmonic Choir, will
perform a river chant, as the river maidens now cleansed are escorted back out
to the river.
OUR PLAN:

Please take the time to comment on the proposals for the development of pier 57
(around 17th street on the Hudson), either by attending the public hearing or by
viewing the proposals online and submitting written comments electronically.
Pier 57 is one of the largest contiguous spaces in Hudson River Park. While the
development of the space must generate some of the operating budget for the
Park, it should also serve the needs of the Park's users. Most of the proposals
comprise some kind of water access, but if we hope to ensure free public access
for non-motorized boats, we must let the Trust and the developers know!
In the past, these hearings have served not just to let the Park Trust know how
the public feels about the proposals, but also to shape the proposals themselves
as they continue to evolve after these hearings, based on public comments, as
the developers try to tailor their proposals to what they think will garner the
most support.
Even if you have little time to examine the proposals, now is the time to send
in a brief comment advising the trust that you want / hope for / demand free
public water access for non-motorized boats in the new development.
We are a sizable community with a loud voice when we choose to use it. Go
ahead--exercise your right to have a say in the process!
thanks.

About Us
This past summer the National Park Service approved the construction of the
Gateway Bike & Boathouse in Riis Landing. Finally Rockaway residents will
have a place to store and launch their canoes, kayaks, rowing shells and
small sailboats to gain access to Jamaica Bay without having to leave the
peninsula. Rental bikes and boats will also be available for residents
and
park visitor's use for a nominal charge. Additionally, there will be boat
instruction and tours of Jamaica Bay and bike tours of Fort Tilden and Floyd
Bennett Field.
The Gateway Bike & Boathouse, Inc. is a registered not-for-profit, 501(c)(3)
(pending) organization with the following mission: "To encourage the
enjoyment of Jamaica Bay and its surroundings on bicycles and
non-motorized
watercraft for the promotion of health, education and fun!" One of our
goals is to keep costs low by making it an all-volunteer operation. Funds
will come largely through grants, corporate and individual donations as
well
as from membership and usage fees. The facility will initially consist of
six 40' shipping containers that will be outfitted with an
exercise/training
room/office and storage space for bicycles and boats of all kinds. The
budget for construction, scheduled for this winter, and inventory is
approximately $20,000. Donations in the form of bicycles, boats or money
are most welcome! Operations will begin in the Spring of 2009.
