Dear Boathouse volunteer:

We are moving to new system for sending out volunteer emails. This in being done
for a number of technical reasons that we don't need to go into, but it
necessary.
We are going to be using a bulletin board system. If you wish to keep receiving
Volunteer email after May 1st you must register your email address at
http://downtownboathouse.org/phpBB2/
The address of the BBS is also on the volunteer page
If you encounter an error please try again.

Please read the Welcome forum for an overview of the forums and what is
available and how to register or have yourself removed from the system.

You don't have to put a real name in but you do need to put in a real email
address and you will receive a confirmation email to verify your email address
that you must reply to to activate you account You email and membership is not
made public in anyway. If you post to a forum your username is shown and you can
receive email or a private message at your username. People sending you message
will still not see your email address

Although this is a bulletin board you do not need to post anything, read any
forums or do anything beyond register to continue receiving boathouse volunteer
emails.

This would also be a good time to renew your boathouse membership for 2008. Have
a look at http://downtownboathouse.org/membership.html for details of membership

As of March 1st we will begin sending out email using the new system. As well as
continuing to use the old system until May 1st. What this means is that for the
months of March and April, if you have registered for the new system you will be
receiving two copies of the volunteer emails for those two months. We are sorry
for the overlap and inconvenience.

REMEMBER. IF YOU DO NOT REGISTER BY MAY 1ST, YOU WILL NO LONGER RECEIVE ANY MORE
DOWNTOWN BOATHOUSE EMAIL

This announcement will precede all volunteer email until May 1st

**************************
We have finished our pool program at Riverbank State Park for the year. We would
like to thank everyone who took the time to help out with the program this year.
It is now officially spring. We have no more paddling events until May. Please
remember that although the air will get warmer, the water will remain
dangerously cold for a long time (it is currently around 42) NO ONE should be
going out with out proper, training, clothing and authorization.

The web site for the 2008 season is up. The calendar is not yet complete.
Numerous more events will be added when the dates are finalized

From Lee Reiser:

DELAWARE RIVER SPRING TRIP '08
This year's trip will be modified to accommodate the
Down Town Boathouse Volunteers and their guests.

I'm planning a trip on New York's other big river, the Delaware, on Saturday and
Sunday, May 3rd & 4th. We will start from Lackawaxen PA, on Sat. morning at 9:00
am sharp, immediately following a safety briefing at 8:30 am. We will travel
down stream to Sparrowbush, NY (22 miles - 4 hours float time). The higher the
river, the faster it is, so it may take less time to finish than at normal river
levels.
At this time of year the river is very swift and cold consisting of 7-8 sets of
class 1&2 rapids, so wet or dry suits are a must as well as extra paddles, PFDs
and spray skirts. Throw ropes, tow ropes, VHF radios and whistles are also a
good idea. For the safety of all novices, we will generally take a line of
descent out of the most severe rapids, but those who are advanced will be
allowed in the large standing waves. In addition, there will be a safety meeting
before launching as well as a brief before each set of the different rapids.
There are rocks in the river, which we will do our best to avoid so, a plastic
boat is preferable to wood or glass. I use a 17 foot sea kayak. The scenery
beautiful! We have seen many bald eagles and other wildlife on the trips
throughout the years, so bring your cameras.

Drive time from the GWB is 2 hours to northernmost point, which is Narrowsburg,
NY.

SAT. DIRECTIONS
Meet 8:00 am Sparrowbush
We will be meeting in Sparrowbush, NY. Take the Palisades Parkway north, to I-87
north, to Rte. 17 west, to I-84 west, to the Port Jervis exit, follow Rte. 6
west through town. Then, take Rtes. 97/42 North.
Routes 97/42 eventually split. Stay on 97. Just past the 97/42 split, look for a
small wooden sign which reads - SPARROWBUSH, NY STATE FISHING ACCESS. Make a 45
degree left at that sign onto a street called Hook Rd. Follow down to the end.
Here, we will need to transfer kayaks and gear and leave some vehicles in order
to retrieve those transport vehicles, which will be left 22 miles upriver.
We will then proceed North on 97 to the Roebling Bridge and turn left over the
bridge. At the end, make a right turn and follow road around to the Zane Grey
Museum. The launch is directly in front. There is a deli nearby to obtain
breakfast or lunch and to use their facilities.

SUN. DIRECTIONS
Meet 8:00 am Narrowsburg
Follow paragraph one above. Stay on 97 North, past the Roebling Bridge. Follow
signs for Narrowsburg (at blinker, leave 97 and bear left for Rte. 652). Just
past the only traffic light, look for the Tusten Theater and turn right at the
Landers Campground sign (across from Chinese restaurant). If you cross over the
Delaware, you've gone too far. We will have a shorter trip on Sunday to be
determined.
Bring your camp gear if you want to camp Sat. eve in Narrowsburg, at Landers
Campgrounds. This will be our base of operations. They have a 3-sided, wooden
lean-to for around $18/person (tents OK, but not needed). Contact them at
845-252-3925 from 9-5 or 24/7 at:
www.landersrivertrips.com

Please RSVP - ASAP by phone Home (845) 352-0162 Cell: (914) 374-7954 or e-mail
LEE060@...
YOU MUST CALL WITH YOUR PLANS BEFORE SAT. IN ORDER TO FACILITATE SHUTTLE
TRANSPORT.
There is no cell phone service north of Sparrowbush. This is an individual, not
a group event. I will not assume any liability for this trip. You must have
proper gear and have advanced or intermediate experience to do this trip. Join
at your own risk.
Hope to see you there!

If you are hoping to do this trip using boathouse boat, remember NO ONE is allow
to take a boathouse boat out of the boathouse (except paddling it out of course)
with out EXPLICIT permission of the board.
